The Dartmouth Land Ethic: Synthesizing Environmental Ethical Beliefs In Hanover And Beyond, Conor M. Roemer
The Dartmouth Land Ethic: Synthesizing Environmental Ethical Beliefs In Hanover And Beyond, Conor M. Roemer
Environmental Studies Senior Theses
In this thesis, I seek to explore the nature of an environmental ethical paradigm at Dartmouth. In order to do so, I have chosen to begin with an examination of Aldo Leopold’s Land Ethic. This watershed essay has inspired many environmental ethical inquiries in the last eighty years. Leopold’s Land Ethic urged human beings to view the environment beyond what might be extracted for anthropogenic use and to see the land as a summation of everything that lies within it: not just the plants and animals, but the mountains, rocks, rivers, and soil as well. In turn, scores of philosophers …

Charting Canons: Identities And Institutions Behind Bestselling And Award-Winning American Fiction From 1913 To 2023., Katherine M. Arrington
Sociology Undergraduate Senior Theses
How has the level and type of education received by bestselling and award-winning authors changed? How has publisher size and type changed for these same books? Does an author’s education influence the kind of publisher who produces their book? This study examines two of the institutions most involved in producing works of fiction—universities and publishers. I pull from the top-ten bestsellers as listed by Publishers Weekly as well as winners and finalists of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the PEN/Faulkner Award between 1913 and 2023. I compare bestselling and award-winning fiction along the metrics of their authors’ …
Staying Connected During Covid-19: Social Support For Pregnant And Parenting Women With Substance Use Conditions In Rural New England, Katherine E. Takoudes
Staying Connected During Covid-19: Social Support For Pregnant And Parenting Women With Substance Use Conditions In Rural New England, Katherine E. Takoudes
Sociology Undergraduate Senior Theses
The COVID-19 pandemic was an incredibly stressful period of American life. While these strains were felt universally, they unevenly impacted disadvantaged and rural populations who faced greater barriers to healthcare access, experienced higher rates of job loss and financial instability, and had less access to mental health resources. Importantly, the pandemic was isolating as social distancing measures limited customary channels of social support. In this thesis, I distinguish between two different types of social support: bridging and bonding. Bonding networks are close-knit and strong, like family and friends, while bridging networks are looser and wide-reaching, like connections with work colleagues …

Tsunami Exposure And Mental Health Consequences: Protective Role Of Cultural Coping Strategies, Thulitha Wickrama, Michael J. Merten, K. A.S. Wickrama, Amanda Terrell
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
There is a knowledge gap regarding the link between disaster exposure and adolescent mental health problems in developing countries. This study examines the case of Sri Lanka to investigate (a) the immediate and long-term mental health impact of the 2004 tsunami disaster on adolescents and (b) the potential moderating effects of unique cultural and family practices that prevail in Sri Lanka. This study used a random sample of 160 adolescents (ages 12–19) and their mothers who were exposed to the tsunami disaster while living in a southern Sri Lankan village and provided prospective data immediately after the disaster (2005) and …
Geotransformación And Overcoming Underdevelopment In Socialist Cuba, Danny Meza Keane
Geotransformación And Overcoming Underdevelopment In Socialist Cuba, Danny Meza Keane
Comparative Literature M.A. Essays
The term geotransformación, coined and theorized by Cuban geographer and revolutionary Antonio Núñez Jiménez in his 1968 book Geotransformación de Cuba, is an analytic frame which emphasizes the interconnectedness of social and natural transformation. As such, geotransformación functions as a conceptual weapon against not only theories of geographic determinism attempting to depoliticize history, but also grand historical narratives which center the human by overstating its independence from the forces of nature. Taking geotransformación as a conceptual compass for a return to the Cuban Revolution’s decisive early years, I engage in close readings of primary texts including geographic treatises, legal documents, …

The Critical Art And Hope Of Unraveling: A Review Of M. F. Alvarez’S Autoethnography Of Suicide And Renewal, Lucy E. Bailey
The Qualitative Report
This review engages with the powerful critical and evocative autoethnography, Unraveling: An Autoethnography of Suicide and Renewal (2024). Written by M. F. Alvarez, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at the University of New Hampshire, this book narrates the embodied experiences of a young Filipino gay man named Mike whose suffering from childhood trauma slowly escalates into relentless delusions and self-harm that eventually propel him to seek professional help. Alvarez’s beautifully sculpted book captures Mike’s multidimensional psychological life as he lives, observes, and narrates it within structures that medicalize people’s mental health experiences. Dividing his text into story and analysis, Alvarez …
Basque Identity In The 21st Century: Up Close No One Is Normal, Julieta Gaztañaga
Basque Identity In The 21st Century: Up Close No One Is Normal, Julieta Gaztañaga
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
A dynamic conception of identity is not about asserting traits or searching for primordial essences but about the processes and contexts of its dynamic and living production including its social futures. Looking forward to contributing to Basque Studies this article offers an analysis of the complexities of contemporary reconfigurations of identification processes by focusing on the problem of Basque identity in the 21st century. I propose an approach not linked to the "Homeland/Diaspora" model but rather to a form of multifaceted and trans-local dynamics that arises from interaction with multiple places and contexts of cultural production and collective identification. The …
Collegiate Athletes’ Use And Perceptions Of Institutional Sources Of Support For Role-Related Stressors, Sarah J. Hatteberg
Collegiate Athletes’ Use And Perceptions Of Institutional Sources Of Support For Role-Related Stressors, Sarah J. Hatteberg
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Scholarship shows that in managing role-related strains, collegiate athletes have access to a wide range of institutional sources of social support, yet few studies have examined college athletes’ use or perceptions of these institutionally-based sources. Drawing on qualitative interviews conducted with a sample of athletes participating in a big-time collegiate athletic program, this study examined the extent to which athletes solicited social support from various institutional sources in coping with their role-related stressors. Findings suggest that while the majority of athletes solicited aid from institutional sources and appreciated the specialized support those sources were able to provide, athletes also believed …

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
This collaborative autoethnography weaves together a personal and powerful story from a former college athlete turned student-athlete services professional with reflections from a licensed mental health counselor who works with student-athletes. Kim shared her own struggles with mental health as well as her initially unknowing impact on a teammate, who sought her support when contemplating suicide. Information about depression and suicide among college athletes is presented along with practical ways and resources for anyone who might work with student-athletes to know. Developing skills to talk to student-athletes about suicide is one method for professionals to participate in supporting the mental …
College Football Player Transitions Out Of Their Sport: A Qualitative Exploration, Taylor Payne, Andrew Driska
College Football Player Transitions Out Of Their Sport: A Qualitative Exploration, Taylor Payne, Andrew Driska
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The processes of identity management and career transition from sport appear idiosyncratic. Previous research has shown that identity foreclosure and strong athletic identity can complicate transition out of sport (Park et al., 2013; Sparkes, 1998). The literature has shown that social support can make career transition more adaptive and cause less psychological strain for athletes (Blinde & Greendorfer, 1985; Fuller, 2014; Park et al., 2013). It is the job of those in student-support services to help student-athletes prepare for a world after sport. High impact practices (HIP) are an empirically supported way to go about this. This study sought to …
Collaboration Between Athletic And Campus Advisors: Ensuring College Athletes’ Success, Lisa M. Rubin, Will A. Lewis
Collaboration Between Athletic And Campus Advisors: Ensuring College Athletes’ Success, Lisa M. Rubin, Will A. Lewis
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The purpose of this study was to determine how athletic and campus advisors collaborate to ensure college athletes achieve academic success. Athletic and campus advisors at various NCAA member institutions in the U.S. were interviewed to discuss their roles in advising athletes, communication modes and barriers between athletic and campus advising professionals, education and knowledge of sport governing body academic regulations, campus locations and their impact, trustworthiness across units, and collaborative techniques employed. Ethnomethodology was used as a lens to analyze the results, leading to implications for campus advisors, athletic advisors, and advising administrators.
An Examination Of Culturally Responsive Programming For Black Student-Athletes’ Holistic Development At Division I Historically White Institutions (Hwis), Shannon Jolly, Joseph N. Cooper, Jepkorir R. Chepyator-Thomson
An Examination Of Culturally Responsive Programming For Black Student-Athletes’ Holistic Development At Division I Historically White Institutions (Hwis), Shannon Jolly, Joseph N. Cooper, Jepkorir R. Chepyator-Thomson
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
There are significant gaps in positive educational outcomes of Black student-athletes when compared to their peers. These gaps reflect deficits in culturally responsive support for the academic success and holistic development of Black student-athletes at historically White institutions (HWIs). While research has examined athletic academic support programs, there is limited attention towards programming efforts that consider the unique experiences and needs of Black student-athletes at HWIs. Discrepancies in Black student-athletes’ academic performance and graduation rates at Division I HWIs question the effectiveness of athletic academic support programs. The purpose of this manuscript is to examine literature on culturally responsive programming …
“There’S No Way I Can Do All Of This”: The Perceived Impacts Of Stress Exposure On The Academic Development Of Collegiate Athletes, Sarah Hatteberg
“There’S No Way I Can Do All Of This”: The Perceived Impacts Of Stress Exposure On The Academic Development Of Collegiate Athletes, Sarah Hatteberg
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Literature on collegiate athletes’ academic engagement suggests that athletes’ exposure to competing and contradictory role expectations and an institutional prioritization of athletic excellence may negatively impact athletes’ academic and professional development. Few, however, have examined this possibility from the perspective of the athletes themselves. Using qualitative data collected from a sample of collegiate athletes, this study examined athlete perceptions of their stress exposures and how those impact their academic engagement and growth. Findings indicate that athletes across sports experienced role-related and institutional strains that impacted their academic development and professionalization. Specifically, athletes felt that their athletic role obligations and efforts …

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The following is a narrative and critique of the Gerald A. Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal at Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). Using a convenience sample of regional and national media accounts, this manuscript summarizes the confirmed events of the Penn State sexual abuse controversy. This case study focuses on a) the child sexual abuse of three victims, b) the Penn State athletic department and university responses, and c) the interactions between Penn State and state and local child welfare systems. Next, the manuscript will present conceptual and analytical considerations related to the Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal including the …
Big Time College Football & The Perils Of Presidential Control, Jennifer Hoffman
Big Time College Football & The Perils Of Presidential Control, Jennifer Hoffman
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Presidential control of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletic programs with membership in the Football Bowl Series (FBS) Subdivision is constrained by a gridiron marketplace that favors winning and commercial interests. Presidents have a limited set of choices to navigate this marketplace while making decisions in athletics that also reflect the educational values of doctorate-granting institutions. Years of experience, the stage of legitimacy (Bornstein 2003), and the level of ambiguity in the campus environment (Cohen & March, 1974; 1986), all influence the individual and collective level of presidential control. The issue of presidential control at Penn State reminds us that …
One For The Team: Exploring The Relationship Between College Sport, Campus Community, And Academic Social Integration, Aaron W. Clopton
One For The Team: Exploring The Relationship Between College Sport, Campus Community, And Academic Social Integration, Aaron W. Clopton
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
To examine the potential role that identifying with the athletics teams on campus as fan exerted upon a student’s level of academic and social integration, an online survey instrument was distributed to college students (N=1790) at four large, public research universities. Results indicated that fan identification significantly detracted from one’s grade point average. However, the extent to which one maintained that fan identity significantly contributed to the student’s academic and social integration level. Ultimately, though, the students’ perceived sense of community was found to mediate the relationship between fan identification and academic and social integration. Results suggest that the role …

Stereotypes And Stigmas Of College Athletes In Tank Mcnamara’S Cartoon Strip: Fact Or Fiction?, C. Keith Harrison, Suzanne Malia Lawrence, Michelle Plecha, Scott J. Bukstein, Neza K. Janson
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I student-athletes (N= 43) regarding stereotypical cartoons about athletes. A qualitative approach, which included a visual elicitation technique, was utilized by administering the Lifestyle Association & Representation of Athletes Scale (LARAS). The LARAS explored participants’ perceptions of the following six specific concepts: a) academic support issues; b) academic progress; c) coaches as educators; d) professional sport aspirations; e) media identities, advertising, and representation; and f) cultural issues and recruiting. Five major themes emerged from participants’ perceptions: Big Sport Business, Athletic Image, College Athlete …
Examining Academic Role-Set Influence On The Student- Athlete Experience, Lydia F. Bell
Examining Academic Role-Set Influence On The Student- Athlete Experience, Lydia F. Bell
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Informed by the words and experiences of 41 Division I-Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) student-athletes, this qualitative study reveals the complexities of the student-athlete academic experience as shaped by their relationships with academic role- set members. Using role-identity as a theoretical framework, the study identifies coaches, athletic academic advisors, fellow athletes, nonathlete peers, faculty and parents as the key actors in the academic role-set. A discussion around the various influences such relationships can have on the academic experience depending on their strength is provided, and future areas of inquiry are proposed.
An Investigation Of Male College Athletes’ Attitudes Toward Sexual- Orientation, Richard M. Southall, Mark S. Nagel, Eric D. Anderson, Fritz G. Polite, Crystal Southall
An Investigation Of Male College Athletes’ Attitudes Toward Sexual- Orientation, Richard M. Southall, Mark S. Nagel, Eric D. Anderson, Fritz G. Polite, Crystal Southall
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Multiple studies have found homophobic cultures within intercollegiate athletic departments. Accordingly, intolerance of gay/lesbian athletes (while most often forbidden by university policy), may still exist. Many “straight” athletes feel gay/lesbian/bi-sexual (GLB) athletes do not “belong” in college sport. In addition, female sport participants are frequently assumed to be lesbians. Within this social milieu, this study surveyed 698 male and female college athletes from four Division I & III universities in a traditionally conservative region, the Southeastern United States, to determine their attitudes toward sexual orientation. The primary research questions were: (a) “What are college-athletes’ attitudes toward sexual orientation?” and (b) …

The Emotional Needs Of Women In Sports: An Exploration Of Self-Efficacy, Self-Compassion, And Self-Conscious Emotions, Ginger S. Gummelt
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
This study examined the self-efficacy, self-conscious emotions, and self-compassion of women college athletes. While female athletes may benefit greatly from the athletic experience, little research has been done to address their emotional and mental well-being. Self-efficacy and the self-conscious emotions have been shown to be tied to both athletic success and emotional well- being while self-compassion has been identified as an effective tool for enhancing psychological well-being, particularly in athletes (Mosewich, Crocker, Kowalski, & DeLongis, 2013). In order to measure shame, a version of the Test of Self-Conscious Affect (Tangney & Dearing, 2003), was administered to volunteer subjects. Self-efficacy was …
Understanding Student-Athlete Reintegration: Using Social Work Strengths, Charlotte E. Dean, Jerry F. Reynolds Ii
Understanding Student-Athlete Reintegration: Using Social Work Strengths, Charlotte E. Dean, Jerry F. Reynolds Ii
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The reintegration process that follows a student athlete’s unplanned retirement from sport is common among student-athletes. Upon reintegration there are factors that influence an athlete’s ability to remain on campus. These include positive social supports, personal skills, coping skills, and goal setting. There are also more negative reintegration factors such as isolation and role engulfment, limited social supports, lack of preparation, limited personal living skills and emotional regulation, and negative stereotypes from the general collegiate population. A case study helps illustrate the difficulties that a student-athlete may encounter during the reintegration process and how professionals can assist in a more …

Sexual Violence In Intercollegiate Athletics: A Historical Perspective Of Male Athletic Entitlement, Lorin Mordecai
Sexual Violence In Intercollegiate Athletics: A Historical Perspective Of Male Athletic Entitlement, Lorin Mordecai
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Sexual violence within intercollegiate athletics is an understudied area of research in social work. Feminist theorists suggest that sexual violence reinforces male dominance as a result of living in a patriarchal society. Male college athletes participating in commercialized sports develop a sense of entitlement due to public admiration for their heroic athleticism. The college sports culture at large Division I universities sets the stage for sexual aggression and exploitation of women. This article seeks to identify themes of male athletic entitlement that perpetuates violence against women through a feminist perspective. Using a historical qualitative analysis, articles from major newspapers were …

College Athletes, Social Justice, And The Role Of Social Workers In Advocating For Change, Lauren Mccoy, Evie Oregon, Dana J. Sullivan
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Social justice activism from college athletes is considered a rare occurrence often due to the intensity of negative public response and the possibility of athletic repercussions. The likelihood of negative reactions did not stop the unique, highly publicized protests at Grambling State University and the University of Missouri. These protests set the tone for college athlete unionization and a new era of college athlete activism. College athletes recognize their power as corporate brands and standing as a group made it so their voices had to be heard or else face financial consequences. While these protests achieved their initial goals, their …

College Athletes And Crime: The Role Of Race, Age, And Peers And The Implications For Social Work Practice In College Sports, Emmett L. Gill Jr.
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Almost every other day there is a news story about a college athletes’ involvement in an alleged crime. Indeed, one Sports Illustrated investigation found that, over an eight-month period in 2010, the number of crimes committed by college athletes averaged one every other day (Benedict, 2010). The current study is a secondary data analysis of a sample of 371 media articles documenting the arrests of college athletes between 2010 and 2015. The current study explores differences in the mean number of crimes committed by college athletes’ according to their classification, the number of perpetrators, and the perpetrators’ race across seven …
