Inciting Peace From The Inside Out, Stephen G. Adubato, Ebere Bosco Amakwe, Katherine Hinic, Sarita Maldjian, Forrest Pritchett, Jon Radwan, Nicholas Sooy, Chad Thralls

Conferences

Violence and war can be incited, and so can peace. This volume shares select addresses and responses from Seton Hall University’s 2/7/23 conference “Inciting Peace From The Inside Out.” A multi-disciplinary range of scholars each addresses how reconciliation processes grow from spiritual dynamics. Multiple religious traditions teach contemplative praxes that prioritize and nurture personal reflection oriented toward peace. Social conflicts divide, so engaging them with a partisan orientation only serves to escalate harmful rifts. In contrast, bringing personal awareness and sensitivity, spiritual balance, and holistic integral perspective to conflict can transcend divisions and work toward unity. This volume is supported …

The Significance Of Nyerere’S African Socialism Today: Embracing ‘Utu’ For Promoting Good Governance, Eric Clement Mgalula Jun 2024

The Significance Of Nyerere’S African Socialism Today: Embracing ‘Utu’ For Promoting Good Governance, Eric Clement Mgalula

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper examines the enduring application of Nyerere’s African socialism, focusing on ‘utu’ (humanness) as a transformative principle for governance. By emphasizing values such as gender equality, rule of law, and accountability rooted in Bantu traditions, the study positions ‘utu’ as essential for fostering justice and ethical leadership. Utilizing a library-based research methodology, it critically analyses secondary literature and employs philosophical analysis and deductive reasoning to evaluate Nyerere’s ideology. The research critiques the limited success of neoliberal reforms in Africa. Critics linking African socialism’s shortcomings to ideological flaws are challenged with evidence highlighting external factors like global economic shifts and …

Do Dark Humour Users Have Dark Tendencies? Relationships Between Dark Humour, The Dark Tetrad, And Online Trolling, Sophie Voisey, Sonja Heintz Jun 2024

Do Dark Humour Users Have Dark Tendencies? Relationships Between Dark Humour, The Dark Tetrad, And Online Trolling, Sophie Voisey, Sonja Heintz

School of Psychology

Humour and antisocial behaviour on the internet are under-researched. Online spaces have opened a gateway for new ways to express unrestrained humour (e.g., dark humour) and ways to behave antisocially (e.g., online trolling). The tendencies and motivations of those engaging with such humour and behaviour are yet to be clearly established and understood. The present study aimed to fill this gap by exploring the interplay between dark humour, online trolling, and dark personality traits. Participants (N = 160) completed an online survey consisting of trait scales to assess the Dark Tetrad, dark humour, and online trolling, as well as two …

Facing Up To Internet Giants, Shai Dothan Jun 2024

Facing Up To Internet Giants, Shai Dothan

Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law

Mancur Olson claimed that concentrated interests win against diffuse interests even in advanced democracies. Multinational companies, for example, work well in unison to suit their interests. The rest of the public is not motivated or informed enough to resist them. In contrast, other scholars argued that diffuse interests may be able to fight back, but only when certain conditions prevail. One of the conditions for the success of diffuse interests is the intervention of national and international courts. Courts are able to fix problems affecting diffuse interests. Courts can also indirectly empower diffuse interests by initiating deliberation to inform the …

Who Gets To Decolonize: A Reflection On The Importance Of Positionality In The Decolonization Of Digital Learning Spaces And Learning Design, Rebecca Y. Bayeck, Tutaleni Iita Asino Jun 2024

Who Gets To Decolonize: A Reflection On The Importance Of Positionality In The Decolonization Of Digital Learning Spaces And Learning Design, Rebecca Y. Bayeck, Tutaleni Iita Asino

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Decolonization as a term and concept gained prominence in the 20th century as new nations emerged from the cessation of the global colonial project which primarily saw European countries occupying different parts of the world. In modern times, interests in decolonization have taken different forms, particularly in learning design and digital learning spaces. In the digital space, researchers mainly suggest introducing indigenous perspectives and cultural lenses in the design of digital learning environments and the design of emerging technologies that embed indigenous perspectives (Nede, 2023). This reflexive essay discusses the importance of positionality in digital learning spaces and learning/instructional design. …

Sacred Space And Self: Feminist Reflections In The Church Of Mary, Ozan Can Yilmaz Jun 2024

Sacred Space And Self: Feminist Reflections In The Church Of Mary, Ozan Can Yilmaz

Journal of Global Catholicism

This study recontextualizes Mary's obedience and nurturing characteristics as a counterbalance to Eve's disobedience, symbolically representing a trajectory towards reconciliation and redemption. It delves into Mary's multifaceted role as a bestower of life and grace, her intrinsic maternal compassion, and her facilitation of female empowerment. Through this analytical framework, it offers a nuanced perspective on pilgrimages to sacred sites associated with Marian veneration, suggesting that these journeys transcend mere historical and religious connections to become platforms for personal healing, spiritual growth, and the exploration of feminine identity. The research is underpinned by a fieldwork conducted at the Church of Mary …

Trends And Shifts: Migration, Reverse Missions, And African Catholic Priests In Iowa City, Usa, Kefas Lamak

Journal of Global Catholicism

This study uses ethnographic research to examine the work and self-conception of African-trained priests in a city in the American state of Iowa. This phenomenon is part of a broader trend and shift as African-trained priests take up positions as pastors and missionaries throughout Europe and America. The article argues that the movement of African priests to the West in recent years should be understood as “reverse mission” because of its similarities to Western missionary activity in third world countries in earlier historical periods. This study mainly focuses on Iowa City, where the researcher interviewed five African priests serving in …

“I Tell Them Generics, But Not The Specifics”: Exploring Tensions Underlying Familial Support For First-Generation Latinx Undergraduate Students, Stephany Cuevas

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Families continue to play an essential role in the experiences of first-generation Latinx undergraduate students and can serve as powerful partners to support student retention and socioemotional wellbeing. This qualitative phenomenological study uses the notion of emerging adulthood to explore how first-generation Latinx undergraduate students (n = 16) conceptualize their families’ role in their college education. Specifically, this study shows that while students describe feeling supported by their families, they also experience distinct and unique tensions tied to this support, which students associate with their first-generation student status. These tensions include (1) the family’s unfamiliarity with college culture; (2) bidirectional …

Mapping The Mess: A Literate Activity Method For Teacher Research On Civic Literacies In Writing Classrooms, Brittany Larsen Jun 2024

Mapping The Mess: A Literate Activity Method For Teacher Research On Civic Literacies In Writing Classrooms, Brittany Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

Faced with an increasing need in higher education to address civic issues and prepare students for participation in democratic discussion, rhetoric and writing classrooms have become one space for including civic literacies, and meeting institutional demand for civic engagement. However, the complexities of changing tools, platforms, and means of civic participation require a similarly complex method for investigating teacher and student work and how to approach incorporating civic literacies into the writing and rhetoric classroom. Using a literate activity research method, teachers can incorporate concepts such as divergent uptake to guide their approaches for putting teacher and student materials in …

Natural Gas Or National Gas–Would A Statewide Natural Gas Ban In New Development Violate The Commerce Clause?, Madison D. Montague

San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law

This Article analyzes: (1) the contours of a natural gas installation ban, how municipalities have incorporated these bans, and how the state government may pass a statewide ban; (2) the likelihood that these bans would place a substantial burden on interstate commerce; (3) who, if anyone, would have standing to sue to end these bans; and (4) whether anyone could prevail in an action against a ban on new gas development.

Narrating The Effective Law For Foreign Direct Investment, Aurora Jillena Meliala, Adinda Putri Prakasa, Jonathan Andre Woods

Indonesian Journal of International Law

Amidst the inflation phenomenon, the government approach to raising interest rates, and the threat of global recession, Foreign Direct Investment plays a pivotal role in boosting targeted economies. However, investors impugn the investment regulations’ efficacy and alternative dispute resolutions. Specifically, in the case of International State Dispute Settlement, to be claimed as an essential process in the investment regime, it has to guarantee the rights of private parties to sue a sovereign nation under the protection of public international law – usually manifested on BIT clauses. However, this study showed. BITs do not serve to attract additional FDI. While BITs …

Social Contact As A Conditional Factor On The Effects Of Disclosing An Invisible Identity: The Case Of Zainichi Koreans, Kai Timothy Zhou Jun 2024

Social Contact As A Conditional Factor On The Effects Of Disclosing An Invisible Identity: The Case Of Zainichi Koreans, Kai Timothy Zhou

Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses

This study provides empirical evidence for the existence of hiring discrimination against Zainichi Koreans, an ethnic minority group in Japan with an “invisible” identity. Using a conjoint survey experiment conducted in the Kansai region of Japan, Japanese citizens were found to strongly prefer ethnically Japanese job applicants over Zainichi Korean applicants. However, this discriminatory preference was less pronounced when Zainichi applicants used Japanese pseudonyms rather than ethnic Korean names, suggesting concealing an invisible identity can mitigate discrimination. The results also demonstrate a conditional effect of intergroup social contact on discriminatory attitudes. Respondents with high self-reported contact with Zainichi Koreans were …

The Dartmouth Land Ethic: Synthesizing Environmental Ethical Beliefs In Hanover And Beyond, Conor M. Roemer Jun 2024

The Dartmouth Land Ethic: Synthesizing Environmental Ethical Beliefs In Hanover And Beyond, Conor M. Roemer

Environmental Studies Senior Theses

In this thesis, I seek to explore the nature of an environmental ethical paradigm at Dartmouth. In order to do so, I have chosen to begin with an examination of Aldo Leopold’s Land Ethic. This watershed essay has inspired many environmental ethical inquiries in the last eighty years. Leopold’s Land Ethic urged human beings to view the environment beyond what might be extracted for anthropogenic use and to see the land as a summation of everything that lies within it: not just the plants and animals, but the mountains, rocks, rivers, and soil as well. In turn, scores of philosophers …

Charting Canons: Identities And Institutions Behind Bestselling And Award-Winning American Fiction From 1913 To 2023., Katherine M. Arrington

Sociology Undergraduate Senior Theses

How has the level and type of education received by bestselling and award-winning authors changed? How has publisher size and type changed for these same books? Does an author’s education influence the kind of publisher who produces their book? This study examines two of the institutions most involved in producing works of fiction—universities and publishers. I pull from the top-ten bestsellers as listed by Publishers Weekly as well as winners and finalists of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the PEN/Faulkner Award between 1913 and 2023. I compare bestselling and award-winning fiction along the metrics of their authors’ …

Staying Connected During Covid-19: Social Support For Pregnant And Parenting Women With Substance Use Conditions In Rural New England, Katherine E. Takoudes Jun 2024

Staying Connected During Covid-19: Social Support For Pregnant And Parenting Women With Substance Use Conditions In Rural New England, Katherine E. Takoudes

Sociology Undergraduate Senior Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic was an incredibly stressful period of American life. While these strains were felt universally, they unevenly impacted disadvantaged and rural populations who faced greater barriers to healthcare access, experienced higher rates of job loss and financial instability, and had less access to mental health resources. Importantly, the pandemic was isolating as social distancing measures limited customary channels of social support. In this thesis, I distinguish between two different types of social support: bridging and bonding. Bonding networks are close-knit and strong, like family and friends, while bridging networks are looser and wide-reaching, like connections with work colleagues …

Tsunami Exposure And Mental Health Consequences: Protective Role Of Cultural Coping Strategies, Thulitha Wickrama, Michael J. Merten, K. A.S. Wickrama, Amanda Terrell

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

There is a knowledge gap regarding the link between disaster exposure and adolescent mental health problems in developing countries. This study examines the case of Sri Lanka to investigate (a) the immediate and long-term mental health impact of the 2004 tsunami disaster on adolescents and (b) the potential moderating effects of unique cultural and family practices that prevail in Sri Lanka. This study used a random sample of 160 adolescents (ages 12–19) and their mothers who were exposed to the tsunami disaster while living in a southern Sri Lankan village and provided prospective data immediately after the disaster (2005) and …
