Politicians’ Green Incentives And External Auditing, Ole-Kristian Hope, Heng Yue, Qinlin Zhong Nov 2024

Politicians’ Green Incentives And External Auditing, Ole-Kristian Hope, Heng Yue, Qinlin Zhong

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This paper examines whether and how politicians’ green incentives affect external auditing. Specifically, we investigate the effects of China’s Green Audit of Outgoing Officials (GAOO) policy, which directly links environmental performance to public officials’ promotions. Employing a DID approach, we observe a significant reduction in audit fees for high-polluting firms after the implementation of GAOO. The decrease is stronger among firms located in regions with departing public officials. We identify two channels driving this trend: (1) Auditors rely on public information generated from intensified governmental efforts, thereby economizing on their efforts (i.e., a substitution effect); (2) High-polluting firms improve their …

Digital Creative Portfolios As New Spaces For Professional Interaction, Verónica Meléndez Valoria

Artículos científicos

Since the advent of digital platforms that allowed creatives to publicly showcase their portfolios, some of these platforms have evolved beyond their original models. They have transitioned from mere exhibitions to more commercialized and interactive spaces. In these environments, any creative individual can not only display their work but also promote their brand and establish diverse connections, much like any other social network. The article aims to identify key elements and causes of this transformation. Additionally, it seeks to explain the position these platforms hold in relation to other domains. Lastly, it intends to extract implications and unresolved questions for …

The Relevance Of Demographic Similarity And Factuality In Social Influencer Communication Culture – A Comparison Between Hedonic And Utilitarian Conditions, Walter Von Mettenheim, Klaus-Peter Wiedmann Nov 2024

The Relevance Of Demographic Similarity And Factuality In Social Influencer Communication Culture – A Comparison Between Hedonic And Utilitarian Conditions, Walter Von Mettenheim, Klaus-Peter Wiedmann

American Business Review

This work identifies differences in the success factors of influencers given consumers’ consumption goals (hedonic vs. utilitarian). Although practitioners have complained about the lack of know-how regarding this issue, research on the topic remains scarce. Hypotheses on the differing relevance of the demographic similarity of influencers and consumers and of the factuality of influencers’ communication are verified through an empirical investigation. The scenario is consumers’ selection of a hotel for (1) a holiday (hedonic consumption goal) or (2) a professional/university seminar (utilitarian consumption goal). The results are analyzed by structural equation modeling and multigroup analysis. We generate some surprising results. …

Do #Blm At The Plantation: A Study Of Plantation Tourism After The Racial Reckoning Of 2020, Denetria N. Lee

LSU Master's Theses

Following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, the widespread public protest of racial injustice created a groundswell that prompted corporate and media responses, so much so that by the end of the summer of 2020, it seemed as if "Black Lives Mattered" everywhere and to everyone. Public response incentivized subsequent corporate response in financial pledges and other commitments to racial justice initiatives until 2020, which became known as the year that America confronted racism or the racial reckoning of 2020. While the public demanded acknowledgment of the many forms of contemporary racial …

Teaching Statistics For The Social Sciences Using Active Learning: A Case Study, Daniel Douglas

Department of Sociology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

US college students are typically required to take at least one mathematics or statistics course, either as part their major area of study, or as a general education requirement. College mathematics requirements are an obstacle for many college students. Active learning, a pedagogical approach that places emphasis on students’ collaborative work, has been shown to increase student learning and course success in STEM fields of study and in mathematics courses. Active learning has also been shown to be adaptable to courses involving computer software and programming, such as introductory statistics. This case study is based on the author’s experience implementing …

Is The Population Of The Critically Endangered White-Bellied Heron Declining In Namdapha Tiger Reserve, India?, Rohan K. Menzies, Kulbhushansingh R. Surya Wanshi, Rohit Naniwadekar

Open Access archive

The Critically Endangered white-bellied heron Ardea insignis is a large-bodied, range-restricted, piscivorous bird of the Himalayan mountains. With fewer than 60 individuals remaining globally, regular monitoring is required for this rare species. We present the results of surveys during 2017 and 2023-2024 in Namdapha Tiger Reserve, Arunachal Pradesh, India. The encounter rate of white-bellied herons in 2017 was 0.55 individuals per km of river, but we did not detect the bird during intensive surveys in the same location during 2023-2024. The surveyed area within the Reserve was once a stronghold for the species, but its population appears to be declining. …

Independent Living and Community Participation

In late 2023, the Research & Training Center on Disability in Rural Communities (RTC:Rural) and the Urban Institute partnered to better understand issues related to using and accessing rural disability data. First, we hosted two listening sessions to explore challenges and opportunities to improve the relevance, access, and accuracy of rural disability data. One listening session focused on perspectives from data users and rural community stakeholders. The other focused on perspectives from data producers including multiple federal agencies that collect and disseminate national, state, and local data. These discussions culminated in a rural data summit, Elevating Rural Disability Data for …

Could The Net Cost Of A Child Be Zero Dollars?, Vladimir Snurenco Nov 2024

Could The Net Cost Of A Child Be Zero Dollars?, Vladimir Snurenco

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The article argues that the claim that raising children in America is unaffordable overlooks the economic benefits of marriage. While estimates like $300,000 sensationalize costs, they ignore the "marriage premium," which provides married couples with $1 million–$2 million in additional lifetime earnings through combined incomes, shared expenses, and increased productivity.

DINKs (Dual Income, No Kids) exemplify this premium, enjoying financial stability and luxury without children. The article suggests reframing parenting costs from a macroeconomic problem requiring political solutions to a microeconomic perspective that highlights marriage as a key to financial success. For most married couples, the net cost of raising …

The purpose of this training was to improve the personal, social, and financial management skills of Rohingya youth, which would be useful on their return to Myanmar or during their interim period of stay in Bangladesh. This pilot initiative also included host community youth. The Council found the soft skills training relevant and necessary for the lives of Rohingya and host community youth and identified an increase …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This research focuses on the examination of public records and their potential to deliver inclusive service to the native populations of Ucayali, a key difficulty in the administration of public services in varied and culturally rich areas. The study tackles a gap in the current literature, where standard techniques do not effectively examine how transparency and sufficiency of services influence inclusive service quality. Using methodologies based on neutrosophic set theory, the research presents a novel way to examine the efficacy and accessibility of public registry services in a particular cultural setting. The findings reveal that the combination of Management Transparency …

Urban Residents’ Perceptions Of Rural People And Places: Data From Texas, Gene L. Theodori, Michael W-P Fortunato, Fern K. Willits

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

In this study, we used data drawn from a 2021 online survey to assess urban Texas residents’ perceptions of rural people and places. We also evaluated how respondents’ views of rurality vary depending upon their direct personal experiences in rural Texas, their participation in selected rural Texas-focused activities, and their sociodemographic characteristics. Descriptive statistics revealed that urban Texans tend to agree with positive depictions of rurality and disagree with negative images. Multiple regression analysis showed that direct personal experiences in rural Texas, participation in rural Texas-focused activities, and certain sociodemographic characteristics were associated with pro-rural perceptions. These findings are compared …

Populist Secularism, Seval Yildirim

Journal Articles

This article argues that in the context of a developing democracy, the rise of religiously oriented parties should be viewed contextually as part of an ongoing process of democratic negotiation and consolidation. Using Turkey as a case study, this article argues that religion and secularism are best viewed as parts of a symbiotic relationship, informing each other’s identity, and defining characteristics through an ongoing process of negotiation.

The article discusses commonly used concepts relevant to secularism in general and argues for the need to distinguish between the secular, secularism, and secularization as a governance project. Through a historical survey of …

Why Be A Treekeeper? Connecting Involvement To Volunteer Characteristics And Motivations, Jess Vogt, Annalise Nordgren, Camila Cortez, Al De Reu

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Definitions of involvement in the volunteer literature vary from the simple binary metric (volunteering or not) to frequency (how often) to metrics that use additive or statistical indices to capture concepts like duration, commitment, and satisfaction. In this paper, we examine the connections between several dimensions of volunteer involvement and the characteristics and motivations of volunteers. Who participates in volunteer urban forest stewardship? What motivates individuals to sign-up and then to continue volunteering? Does volunteers’ involvement vary with demographic factors or their motivations? We examine these questions using the results of an online survey of TreeKeepers, volunteer participants in an …

Too Much Democracy? Exploring The Link Between Majoritarian Institutions And Disparities In The American States, Julianna Pacheco, Scott Lacombe Nov 2024

Too Much Democracy? Exploring The Link Between Majoritarian Institutions And Disparities In The American States, Julianna Pacheco, Scott Lacombe

Government: Faculty Publications

In the field of American state politics, the tension between majoritarian institutions and equality has largely been ignored. Do state institutions that empower majority preferences exacerbate disparities in social outcomes? Under what conditions do majoritarian institutions exacerbate inequalities in the American states? Our argument is that equality is most likely to be threatened under majoritarian institutions when (1) there are systemic participatory biases and/or (2) there are widespread prejudices about particular groups in society. We find that more majoritarian institutions are associated with larger disparities between White and Black life expectancy and poverty rates across the American states, but not …

Analysis Of The Evolution Of Social Competence In Students Through Research Methods Based On Neutrosophic Sets, Huberto Tito Hinostroza Robles, María Teresa Cabanillas López, Fidel Denis Huasco Espinoza

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

The present study investigates the evolution of social competence in students through research methods based on set theory and the application of neutrosophic sets. The central question lies in how to accurately assess the development of social skills in educational contexts, given that traditional tools do not always capture the complexity of students' interactions and perceptions. The importance of this topic lies in the need for evaluation methods that faithfully reflect the growth in social competencies, vital for the comprehensive development of students in increasingly diverse and demanding educational environments. Despite the abundance of studies on social competencies, there is …
