Australians Support Multi-Pronged Action To Build Ecosystem Resilience In The Great Barrier Reef, Stewart Lockie, Henry Bartelet, Brent Ritchie, Csilla Demeter, Bruce Taylor, Lintje Sie
Quantitative Methods and Information Technology Faculty Publications
The scale and pace of global environmental change calls for a dramatic upscaling of ecosystem restoration and for actions that build the resilience of ecosystems to future environmental change. This research aimed to quantify public perceptions of threats to the health of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia, and their support for strategies to address those threats including large-scale restoration and resilience-building actions. We examine how these perceptions change over time and across social cohorts including people living closer to the Reef (n = 2621) and the general Australian population (n = 5825). Respondents were concerned about both …
Reconstruction, And The Unfulfilled Promise Of Antitrust, Bennett Capers
Reconstruction, And The Unfulfilled Promise Of Antitrust, Bennett Capers
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Wealth inequality remains as wide, and as troubling, as it was a half-century ago. While scholars have offered various explanations, there is a contributor that has escaped serious scrutiny: state monopoly power. It is not just that there is a long history of states and municipalities using their monopoly power to protect dominant interests, from enacting Black Codes to shuttering Chinese laundries to barring women, immigrants, and minorities from certain professions. It is also that states continue to use their monopoly power in ways that entrench inequality, from zoning restrictions to eminent domain to regulations that, in effect, bar Black …

Racing Latinidad, Renee Hudson
Racing Latinidad, Renee Hudson
English Faculty Books and Book Chapters
This chapter argues that the terms “Latinx” and “latinidad” are messy signifiers that allow us to contend with Latinx’s complicated racial history. While the term Latinx continues to be controversial, and scholars such as Tatiana Flores have examined the case for cancelling latinidad, “Racing Latinidad” points to how latinidad can signify particular political commitments and affinities. Through readings of Manuel Muñoz’s What You See in the Dark (2011) and Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa’s Daughters of the Stone (2009), this chapter illuminates how excavating racial histories outside the logic of the state is a way to summon a politics to imagine a people. …

Pakistan@2050: Demographic Change, Future Projections, And Development Opportunities, Population Council
Population Policy and Demographic Analysis
Pakistan@2050 is a unique volume that provides comprehensive evidence and insights into the linkages between population dynamics and development. It illustrates Pakistan’s position regarding demographic transition and offers a regional comparison. The study highlights how population trends and dynamics significantly shape development outcomes, emphasizing the need to integrate these factors into both short-term and, most importantly, long-term planning and policy decisions. Long-term planning in Pakistan has faced persistent challenges related to poverty, climate change, and a tendency towards reactive rather than proactive interventions. These approaches often overlook the impact of high population growth on development gains.

Sustaining The Legacies Of Black Farmers, John Myers, James Burch, Demetrius Hooks
Professional Agricultural Workers Journal
The experience of Black farmers in the Southern United States is shaped by a legacy of racial inequity and unfavorable public policies that have all but ensured unequal access to fundamental resources such as land, labor, and capital. Rural poverty and land loss through heir property have encumbered access to these resources. Within this context of disenfranchised generations of history, this article contributes to examining and understanding the experiences of Black farmers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. It seeks to amplify the voices of Black farmers as a step toward providing context for a more inclusive and meaningful …

Active Ageing : Pension System And Older Workers Policies In Hong Kong And Japan, Hin Yau Tsang
SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works
Since the growing trend of aging is now a threat around the globe, there is more and more attention being devoted to the right of the elderly to participate and engage in the workplace. In order to provide policy recommendations for government departments to expedite the work environment for older people and support their integration into or return to the workplace, this paper investigates the difference of the pension system and older workers policies present in Hong Kong and Japan by secondary research methods. Currently, there are multiple investigations on the older workers’ working reasons and challenges, however, there are …

Implementing Open Educational Resources In Colleges And Universities: A Literature Review, D. Laverne Hill, Taralynn Hartsell, Jamie L. Workman, Amy Smith
Georgia Library Quarterly
The use of Open Educational Resources (OER) is becoming increasingly widespread in higher education institutions as the ease of use, equitable access, and the cost-free availability makes OER a viable option for classroom materials. Incorporating OER into the curriculum can be both beneficial and challenging for faculty. Because librarians are skilled and efficient in finding adequate resources to supplement learning, they prove to be an asset when striving to implement an OER initiative in the institution. While faculty would be the primary group to introduce many of the OER to students, it takes a collaborative effort between faculty and librarians …
Impacts Posed By Recreational Marijuana Legalization : A Global Comparison In Jurisdictions With Different Marijuana Control Policies, Weizhou Zhu
SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works
As marijuana legalization is adopted by more and more countries, there have been a lot of debates about its benefits and downsides. Around the world, the majority of countries maintain their illegality, a few are fully open, while some decriminalize or do not enforce the prohibition laws. However, few studies have examined the different impacts brought by district cannabis control policies. This study uses the systematic review method to investigate the impacts of marijuana legalization in 5 domains and compare them on a global basis. A total of 51 articles published between January 2019 to June 2024 were selected. Policy …
Exploring The Relationship Between Religious Minorities And National Security : A Comparative Analysis Of Israeli And Xinjiang, Geyu Wang
SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works

Through a comparative analysis, this study aims to reveal the many ways in which religious minorities exert influence and are affected by national security dynamics. The study explores the complex connections between state authorities, religious minorities, and broader societal contexts by analysing historical, socio-political, and policy factors. The research illuminates the different levels of securitization, discrimination, and resistance encountered by religious minorities in these places, using a combination of empirical evidence and …
Judges In Their Own Cases: Biblical Kings And Supreme Court Justices, Joshua Segev
Judges In Their Own Cases: Biblical Kings And Supreme Court Justices, Joshua Segev
Touro Law Review
Allegations that the justices of the United States Supreme Court are judges in their own cases and that they judge themselves leniently are common. These allegations are often accompanied by an association with kings, queens, and monarchies, accountable to no one but their own divine authority. This Article took this association seriously and used the biblical story of prophet Nathan's rebuke of King David for his sin towards Bathsheba and Uriah to explain the problems, tensions, and conflicting considerations of the contemporary recusal doctrine of the United States Supreme Court. This biblical judicial tale has two possible conclusions, depending on …

Latinx populations in the USA have grown steadily in recent decades, with significant increases taking place in “new destination communities” of the U.S. South. The focus of our paper is to highlight opportunities for working with these populations, including traditional sociolinguistic ethnographies and community-engaged research. We highlight an initiative named “The SEC Spanish Consortium” which is an interinstitutional collaboration centered on scholarship and service involving Latinx populations in new destination communities of the U.S. South. We show that ongoing and future scholarly work in the U.S. South can act as a mechanism for documenting these emerging Latinx communities while simultaneously …

Local Ceos And Voluntary Disclosure: Evidence From Non-Gaap Earnings, Jiwoo Seo, Adam Esplin, Yun Ke, Kari Olsen
Hunt Institute Working Paper Series
In the U.S. CEO labor market, firms are more likely to hire local CEOs than non-local CEOs. We explore the consequences of this hiring practice on voluntary disclosure of firm financial information in the non-GAAP earnings setting. Using a sample of S&P 1500 firms from 2003 to 2020, we show that firms led by local CEOs are less likely to provide non-GAAP earnings than those led by non-local CEOs. This result holds across a battery of robustness tests, including a placebo test, adopting different matching procedures, an instrumental variable approach, various regression specifications, and alternative samples using CEO turnover events. …
The Role Of Demographic Change In Explaining Declining Labor Force Participation, Manoj Atolia, John Gibson, Felix Rioja
The Role Of Demographic Change In Explaining Declining Labor Force Participation, Manoj Atolia, John Gibson, Felix Rioja
Hunt Institute Working Paper Series
The labor force participation rate has been declining in the United States since the late 1990s. Decomposing the aggregate labor force participation rate by age reveals that this decline is being driven by reduced participation among relatively young individuals, those aged 16 to 24. In fact, participation among older individuals, age 55 and above, has been increasing. In this paper, we develop a model in which individual decisions regarding schooling and retirement, in view of empirically observed changes in mortality, can simultaneously explain these three labor force participation trends. Furthermore, a counterfactual scenario that accounts for the observed demographic trends …

Judicial Dark Matter, Nina Varsava, Michael A. Livermore, Keith Carlson Carlson, Daniel N. Rockmore
University of Chicago Law Review
Judicial reform efforts aimed at rectifying historical gender and racial inequalities understandably focus on increasing the number of women and people of color on the bench. While this is an important program, this Article sheds light on another aspect of the representation problem, which will not necessarily be resolved through greater diversity in judicial appointments. This problem has to do with the understudied and often opaque practices of judicial administration. Through a large-scale empirical study of federal appellate decisions, we examine the distribution of judges along the lines of gender and race across decision panels and find systematic gender and …

The Seaport Platform of Environmental Surveillance (PPSE, or Plateforme Portuaire de Surveillance Environnementale in French) was officially inaugurated in Cotonou Seaport (CS), Benin, by the end of 2021. To our knowledge, this platform is the first laboratory dedicated to the monitoring and management of invasive species to be built inside the walls of an African seaport. Its creation has benefitted from a combination of favorable factors, and its existence has resulted from a long-term, multi-stakeholder and still ongoing process that we here describe and analyze. We believe that the PPSE is an innovative science-guided operational initiative that may be useful …

Cities and the Environment (CATE)
In this perspective, we draw from 20 years of implementing the Stewardship Mapping and Assessment Project (STEW-MAP) to show how civic actors provide capacity and local knowledge needed for effective decision-making and implementation in the face of multiple interconnected stressors, including climate change and inequality. Urban areas are striving to achieve sustainability and resilience goals while advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. There is broad recognition that systematic change cannot be achieved via single sector solutions. Rather, just and equitable sustainability and resilience outcomes will be achieved through multi-sector, trans-disciplinary efforts led by diverse and inclusive partnerships. Processes of collaboration …

Should Ireland Have Taxed Apple?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Nessa Ní Chasaide
Articles
On September 10 the EU’s Court of Justice issued its long-awaited decision in the Apple state aid case. Surprisingly, it reversed the EU’s General Court decision and held that the European Commission was correct in finding that Ireland had provided prohibited state aid to Apple, and therefore Apple must pay Ireland the €13 billion in taxes that it would have paid but for the illegal subsidy. This state aid case, the largest in the EU’s history, highlights significant issues about the legal governance of corporate tax. This article examines the notable features of the Court ruling, then outlines why we …

Economic Dynamism: Interrelationships Among Entrepreneurship-Friendly Environments, Geographic Mobility, And Labor Market Freedom In Both The Pre- And Post-Great Recession Periods, Richard J. Cebula, G. Jason Jolley
American Business Review
This empirical research study endeavors to elevate our understanding of the interrelationship of several aspects of economic dynamism at the state level in the United States. We investigate the factors influencing geographic mobility, i.e., both net in-migration and gross in-migration patterns, by simultaneously focusing on two hypotheses using state-level panel data covering the period 2005-2017, as well as Pre-Great Recession and Post-Great Recession sub-periods thereof. These two hypotheses are as follows: the pattern of geographic mobility is positively impacted by a business climate that is (a) friendly to the pursuit of entrepreneurship per se on the one hand and (b) …
Fatherhood, Family Law, And The Crisis Of Boys And Men, June Carbone, Clare Huntington
Fatherhood, Family Law, And The Crisis Of Boys And Men, June Carbone, Clare Huntington
Faculty Scholarship
Boys and men in all racial and ethnic groups and across most socioeconomic groups are struggling on many fronts, including education, employment, physical and mental health, and social integration. In these areas and more, boys and men are much worse off than they were only a few decades ago. The crisis — which is concentrated among men without college degrees — is rooted in large-scale structural changes to the economy that have decimated jobs for this group and policy choices that emphasize incarceration while doing little to address economic inequality.
The decline in male well-being is not just a problem …

In the past year, three governmental ministries – the Ministry of Health, Ministry of National Development, and Ministry of Transport – have jointly led Age Well SG, a national programme that seeks to support older Singaporeans in ageing well in their homes and their communities. This programme reflects the government’s priority in enabling ageing-in-place, a trend that has been increasingly welcomed by older Singaporeans. Current policies that seek to enable ageing-in-place are centred on three forms of enhancements in the environments in which older Singaporeans live, such as the implementation of Active Ageing Centres, strengthening of support for care needs, …

'More Is Caught Than Taught:' Parental Cultural And Racial Socialization Beliefs And Practices In The Midwest United States, Sarah Barker Ladd
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Parents are critical socialization agents for their children, especially in middle childhood. It is through parent-child interactions that beliefs, values, and attitudes can be particularly influential for a child’s identity and social development. In particular, understanding how parents socialize their children has important implications for their own child’s racial identity development and critical consciousness – and later civic engagement and social behaviors. The current study sought to investigate ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) and critical consciousness of parents with children in middle childhood who live in the Midwestern United States. Based on interviews and quantitative survey data from 28 parents, results revealed …
