Birth Privilege As White Privilege, Jennifer Scuro Phd Nov 2024

Birth Privilege As White Privilege, Jennifer Scuro Phd

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

In The Pregnancy ≠ Childbearing Project: A Phenomenology of Miscarriage (2017), I argued the need to ‘disentangle the plot’ of pregnancy as it has a naturalised and uncritical access to heteronormative gender privilege. In this paper, with the premise that, ‘whiteness is property,’ as argued by Cheryl Harris in 1993, I extend this work to how birthing is only a story for the white entitled few, and as an entitlement, is tied to the making and preserving of the ‘nuclear family’ and ‘family values.’ As this history of birth privilege as white privilege is also a trauma history, I include …

Philosophy From The Standpoint Of Damaged Life: Adorno On The Ethical Character Of Thinking, Paolo A. BolañOs Nov 2024

Philosophy From The Standpoint Of Damaged Life: Adorno On The Ethical Character Of Thinking, Paolo A. BolañOs

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

In this paper, I reconstruct Theodor W. Adorno’s philosophy from the standpoint of damaged life, which is a rhetorical way of rethinking the normative force of the philosophical enterprise after, or in the face of, the trauma of Auschwitz. Adorno’s ethical response to damaged life is informed by the “wrong state of things” which, for him, is the basis for philosophy’s revaluation of its language and the activation of the ethical character of thinking. I will argue that far from being a pessimistic stance, Adorno’s position is an emphatic rethinking of the role of philosophy in a life that is …

Diaphany: A Disseminar On Carapace, J. Pilapil Jacobo Nov 2024

Diaphany: A Disseminar On Carapace, J. Pilapil Jacobo

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

If Philippine cinema, during a time of dictatorial duress, has indeed gathered into its fold allegories of a certain social texture, then contemporary critique must also provide a rather thick notion of allegory itself, in order to describe the quality of the metonymic membranes which make possible the emergence of substance through eloquent surface. In this essay, I propose a critical elaboration of Laura Mulvey’s category “carapace,” and a subtle yet significant declension of surface, “diaphane,” in an attempt to intervene in the understanding of film as a plastic form with the tensile capacity to surpass its flatness by choosing …

The Case Of Cronos: A Study Of Familial Resilience And Transnational Political Critique, Nicole Tanquary Nov 2024

The Case Of Cronos: A Study Of Familial Resilience And Transnational Political Critique, Nicole Tanquary

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Resilience as a trope is often associated with the neoliberal ideal of individualized personal success, an ideal that is frequently used to deny the existence of structural oppression (Phipps, 2014). Analyzing cultural artefacts, however, can offer a reappraisal of how publics understand resilience in relation to neoliberal economic policy. In this paper, I analyze a 1993 film by Guillermo del Toro, titled Cronos, to understand how resilience can be presented as familial rather than individual, as well as the trickiness of using film to critique neoliberalism while under the influence of state agencies. In examining Cronos, I argue that …

Accessibility Of National Parks And Other Natural Protected Areas For People With Disabilities: A Scoping Review Of The Academic Literature, Mark Weiler, Alison Whiting, Waqas Sajid, Neha Dewan, Tilak Dutta

Library Publications

National parks and protected wilderness areas provide benefits through leisure activities to many. Yet, many people with disabilities are unable to experience these benefits because of barriers. Therefore, it is important to understand how to improve access to these spaces for people with disabilities. The objective of this study is to identify barriers and facilitators to accessibility in national parks and protected natural areas. Using a scoping review methodology, we searched eighteen academic databases and found 44 sources meeting our eligibility criteria. Our findings include tables that map the literature by publication year, types of disabilities, specific national parks, park …

The Sec Spanish Consortium: Foundations For Linguistic Gratuity And Language Documentation Among Latinx Populations In New Destination Communities Of The U.S. South, Stephen Fafulas, Chad Howe, Rafael Orozco, Alicia Cipria, Erin O'Rourke, Nina Moreno, Matthew J. Van Hoose

Research Products

Latinx populations in the USA have grown steadily in recent decades, with significant increases taking place in “new destination communities” of the U.S. South. The focus of our paper is to highlight opportunities for working with these populations, including traditional sociolinguistic ethnographies and community-engaged research. We highlight an initiative named “The SEC Spanish Consortium” which is an interinstitutional collaboration centered on scholarship and service involving Latinx populations in new destination communities of the U.S. South. We show that ongoing and future scholarly work in the U.S. South can act as a mechanism for documenting these emerging Latinx communities while simultaneously …

Academic Engagement Amongst Commuter Students: A Comparative Analysis, Rebecca Turner, Oliver Webb, Christie Pritchard Nov 2024

Academic Engagement Amongst Commuter Students: A Comparative Analysis, Rebecca Turner, Oliver Webb, Christie Pritchard

Professional Services

As the profile of students entering higher education (HE) has diversified, so too has their residential status. Where students live partly reflects the agenda for widening access but is also a response to rising costs associated with university participation. In the UK, more students are commuting, despite associated challenges and reports of lower academic out-comes. We used survey data (N > 500) to compare engagement between first years who either relocated to attended university or commuted. Overall, commuter students appeared more engaged, demonstrating positive study behaviours and readiness to work alongside course mates. Results indicated that online learning facilitates continuity and …

“You Could Have Did Us Better Than This”: Reparative Housing Policies And The Struggle To Right Harms To Black Communities, Amie Thurber, Lisa K. Bates, Susan Halverson, Keisha Muia Nov 2024

“You Could Have Did Us Better Than This”: Reparative Housing Policies And The Struggle To Right Harms To Black Communities, Amie Thurber, Lisa K. Bates, Susan Halverson, Keisha Muia

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper contributes to the burgeoning literature related to reparative planning, with an emphasis on housing policy. After exploring the state of theorizing related to reparative planning, this paper describes its three central dimensions: public recognition, material redistribution, and social/spatial transformation. The authors use these dimensions to evaluate a housing policy designed to repair harms to Black residents in Portland, Oregon. This in-depth analysis draws on survey, interview, and focus group data to explore the degree to which residents’ experiences of the policy reflect these three dimensions. The paper concludes with implications for other municipalities considering reparative housing policies, namely …

Major Crime Trends Differ In New York City And New York State, Jeffrey A. Butts, Gina Moreno

Publications and Research

Researchers at the John Jay College Research and Evaluation Center analyzed police-reported index crimes across New York State from 2010 to 2024, focusing on trends in violent and property offenses across three regional groups: New York City, its surrounding suburbs, and Upstate New York. While violent and property crimes declined statewide through 2020, both surged in NYC and its suburbs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Upstate regions showed continued or renewed declines. Per capita crime rates reveal more modest increases in NYC and notable decreases in other areas, underscoring regional disparities in crime trends post-2020.

Legal Origin And Emulation Of Trade Secret Protections: A Cross-National Empirical Study, Christopher Dinkel, Jeff Lingwall Nov 2024

Legal Origin And Emulation Of Trade Secret Protections: A Cross-National Empirical Study, Christopher Dinkel, Jeff Lingwall

DePaul Law Review

Why do countries enact stronger legal protections for trade secrets? Existing

research on other types of intellectual property (IP) rights suggests at

least three potential mechanisms. First, more powerful countries, such as

the United States, coerce other countries into implementing stronger IP

rights by threatening to enact trade sanctions against them. Second, countries

agree through international legal instruments to strengthen their IP

protections in exchange for benefits in other issue areas, especially trade.

Third, countries that are open to capital flows increase their IP rights

through regulatory competition with other countries to attract or retain

multinational investment. This Article provides …

The Dialogue

This collaborative paper by Kevin Matejka, Arnaud Zimmern, and Lara Vidal examines the complexities of promoting democracy in Iraq and other Muslim-majority nations. The authors analyze different perspectives on democracy's compatibility with Islamic principles and explore Western and Middle Eastern viewpoints. Through an exploration of political theory and historical context, they provide insights into the challenges and prospects for democratization in the region, particularly in light of U.S. involvement

Jose Rizal And The Birth Of The Social Sciences In The Philippines, Resil B. Mojares Nov 2024

Jose Rizal And The Birth Of The Social Sciences In The Philippines, Resil B. Mojares

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The paper narrates jose Rizal’s sojourn in Berlin in 1887 as a defining moment in the emergence of the social sciences as a Filipino discipline. it situates this moment in a much wider history, in which such factors as the expansion of the economy, civil bureaucracy, education, and nationalism gave rise to the first Filipino writings in such fields as history, anthropology, sociology, economics, and political science. in recalling Rizal and his time, the paper argues that there is a longer history of the disciplines in the Philippines than is usually acknowledged.

Childless Mothers: Lived Experiences Of Black Mothers Who Lost An Only Child, Arielle Jordan Nov 2024

Childless Mothers: Lived Experiences Of Black Mothers Who Lost An Only Child, Arielle Jordan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This qualitative study, grounded in hermeneutic phenomenology, explores the experiences of Black mothers who have lost their only child, addressing a topic often overlooked in counseling training programs. Many counselor educators and supervisors are unprepared to train counselors on how best to support these mothers through their unique grief journeys. This study outcomes fill that gap by providing a deeper understanding of their experiences, intending to shape better counseling practices. The central question guiding this research is: What are the lived experiences of Black mothers who have survived the loss of their only child? To answer this, in-depth interviews were …

A Systematic Exploration Of Theoretical, Conceptual, And Methodological Alignment Of Social Network Analysis In Organizational Behavior, Morgan Gleason Miller Nov 2024

A Systematic Exploration Of Theoretical, Conceptual, And Methodological Alignment Of Social Network Analysis In Organizational Behavior, Morgan Gleason Miller

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This systematic review examines how Social Network Analysis (SNA) is used in the study of Organizational Behavior (OB). Industrial-Organizational Psychology Literature suggests SNA tends to be applied using either a structural or relational approach (Erikson, 2013). Some researchers claim that this methodology is applied inconsistently due to the intermingling of two distinct underlying frameworks and the exclusion of individual differences and interpersonal factors limits the relevance of SNA (Erikson, 2013; Kilduff & Lee, 2020). Results indicate the structural perspective is slightly dominant across the use of SNA, but the use of both frameworks is increasing. Directionally, study methods aligned with …

High Child Care Costs Strain Nh Family Budgets, Tyrus Parker, Jess Carson Nov 2024

High Child Care Costs Strain Nh Family Budgets, Tyrus Parker, Jess Carson

Carsey Publications

In the fourth primer of the Granite Guide to Early Childhood series, authors Tyrus Parker and Jess Carson report that, in 2023, the average price of full-time, center-based care for an infant and a four-year-old in New Hampshire was nearly $32,000 a year. Equivalent to 28 percent of median family income for New Hampshire households with children under 5, this is four times the 7 percent threshold that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has deemed affordable.

High costs can push care out of reach for the lowest-income families, perpetuating inequity. Perhaps the most important relief from high …

“Who Am I?”: Novice Teachers Making Meaning Of Their Intersectional Teacher Identity, Kerrijo E. Ellis Nov 2024

“Who Am I?”: Novice Teachers Making Meaning Of Their Intersectional Teacher Identity, Kerrijo E. Ellis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how marginalized and/or minoritized novice teachers make meaning of their teacher identity. An integrated theoretical framework informed this study using Hong et al.’s (2024) conceptualization of teacher identity, Crenshaw’s (1989) intersectionality, and Collins & Bilge’s (2020) definition of intersectionality. Utilizing the photovoice methodology, four focus groups were conducted with a purposeful sample of five novice teachers who identified as marginalized (i.e., gender, disability, LGBTQIA+) and/or minoritized (i.e., ethnic and/or racial minority). Using reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2023), I identified three themes: (1) Why I Became a Teacher, which included …
