Online And In-Person Intimate Partner Violence: The Role Of Relationship Initiation Context, Jesse John
Online And In-Person Intimate Partner Violence: The Role Of Relationship Initiation Context, Jesse John
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive phenomenon, and cisgender women and sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals are particularly affected. Despite the prevalence of internet usage and online dating among young adults, less research has examined how IPV manifests across relationships in which interactions are predominantly online, as well as those that begin online and transition to predominantly in-person interactions (i.e. hybrid). This study's primary aims are to examine the rates of IPV and nondating technology-facilitated sexual victimization among SGM and nonSGM emerging adults and explore how IPV victimization and mental health outcomes vary based on the extent to …
Negotiating Faith: Relations Between English-Dominant Churches And Maya Immigrants In Northeast Ohio, Abigayle D. Breitner
Negotiating Faith: Relations Between English-Dominant Churches And Maya Immigrants In Northeast Ohio, Abigayle D. Breitner
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
In recent decades, members of Guatemalan Maya communities have immigrated to the United States, bringing their religious identities with them. Most Maya immigrants are Catholics or Protestant Christians with varying relationships to United States-based churches in the towns where they settle. This paper departs from ethnographic work in two northeast Ohio towns with a particularly large Maya immigrant population. I consider how members of predominantly white, English-speaking churches engage with growing Maya congregations in northeast Ohio with a focus on the negotiation of Maya worshipers' desires for autonomy or partnership, and the power relationships inherent in that process. I argue …
White Racial Identity, Climae Change, And Social Attitudes, Alyssa Engle
White Racial Identity, Climae Change, And Social Attitudes, Alyssa Engle
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This study examined how symbolic racism, political conservativism, and White racial identity predicts attitudes toward climate change among White Americans. Prior research suggests that racial resentment vaticinates social and political judgments beyond explicitly racial domains, including environmental issues and policies which disproportionately harm Black and marginalized communities. Building on this prior research, the present study investigated whether racial identity dimensions predict climate change distress, and whether symbolic racism mediates associations between conservative political orientation and climate concern. Seventythree White undergraduate students completed measures of racial identity, symbolic racism, distrust in climate science, political conservatism, and climate distress. As predicted, a …

What’S Left Of The New Deal State?, Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal
What’S Left Of The New Deal State?, Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal
Michigan Law Review Online
A vast body of scholarship situates itself in the New Deal era. Another extensive collection explores the history of criminal justice in the United States. To date, however, there has been little effort to bring these conversations together. New Deal Law and Order, written by legal historian Anthony Gregory, fills this conspicuous gap. Gregory remarkably narrates the New Deal era through the lens of President Franklin Roosevelt’s “war on crime” (p. 1), challenging how we think about both the New Deal’s legacy and the foundations of the modern security state.

Contracts play an important role in innovation. As a result, some. scholars have proposed theories highlighting contract provisions as devices that can serve to informally enforce agreements and build trust between parties. Others emphasize the hierarchical provisions between firms to promote efficiency. Yet another group views these agreements as a mechanism to institutionalize learning and protect property interests. This Article offers a new theory. To understand a firm’s contractual choices and governance, we must look at how the same provisions in different contracts may have distinct meanings or operate differently in different contexts. So, scholars must give context to these …

HOPES Free Clinic Publications
Founded in the 1970s as a grassroots effort to provide care to the underserved population of Hampton Roads, Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) has long been committed to community-centered care. The HOPES Free Clinic is a manifestation of that mission. Launched in 2011 as a student-run phone triage service, the Health Outreach Partnership of EVMS Students (HOPES) later transitioned to provide direct clinical services—becoming the first student-run free clinic in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 2014, HOPES integrated into Community Engaged Learning to enhance and solidify its efforts. Since its inception, medical and health professions students have partnered with volunteer …
Positive Youth Development For Youth Living In Structurally Diverse Families, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer
Positive Youth Development For Youth Living In Structurally Diverse Families, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer
Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences
Research on family structure diversity and youth well-being has largely aligned with deficit orientations, emphasizing that living in structurally diverse families is a potential risk-factor for youth well-being and development. In this article, I advocate for increased strengths-based scholarship on youth living in structurally diverse families by centering this research with positive youth development (PYD) frameworks. Broadly, PYD frameworks orient scholars toward viewing youth holistically, attending to positive indicators of well-being as well as how youth capacities and experiences intersect with family and community resources to promote flourishing and thriving. Approaching family structure diversity and youth well-being from a PYD …
When Lsat Doesn't Matter And Other Surprising Finds From A Deep Dive Into Academic Probation In Law School, Kari Milligan, Ryan Jerome Lecount
When Lsat Doesn't Matter And Other Surprising Finds From A Deep Dive Into Academic Probation In Law School, Kari Milligan, Ryan Jerome Lecount
Faculty Scholarship
Numerous students nationwide are placed on academic probation and ultimately dismissed from law school each year. While students often carefully conceal their probationary status, their lack of visibility within legal communities should not be mistaken for an absence of need. These students are frequently uniquely vulnerable—facing unexpected family emergencies or entering law school unprepared. The consequences of dismissal are dire, with students experiencing adverse mental health effects and financial exigencies. During the 2023–2024 academic year alone, tuition and fees for a single year of law school ranged from $30,000 to $48,000. Yet, little research—particularly quantitative—has been conducted in service of …
Fairness In Contract Law: An Impossibility Theorem?, Francesco Parisi, Brian H. Bix
Fairness In Contract Law: An Impossibility Theorem?, Francesco Parisi, Brian H. Bix
Articles
Scholars have long debated whether contract law should prioritize maximizing efficiency and social welfare or, instead, prioritize justice, fairness and other deontological values. The debate is partly prescriptive (what should we try to do with contract law rules) and partly conceptual (how should we understand contract law). This article surveys central positions in this debate, distinguishing between the corrective and redistributive functions of contract law and between doing justice between the parties and more systemic effects. It highlights an impossibility theorem that underscores the self-defeating nature of redistributive policies in price-based contractual relationships, using a numerical example and two policy …
By Way Of Conclusion: Making Sense Of Fallacies, Claire Hill
By Way Of Conclusion: Making Sense Of Fallacies, Claire Hill
Articles
As noted in the Introduction to this volume, our collective goal is to examine some of the key misconceptions and unquestioned assumptions – which we refer to as ‘fallacies’ – that guide, and often misguide, developments in modern corporate law and financial regulation. These fallacies are embedded and instantiated in scholarship, law, public policy and public opinion. Their intellectual and practical impact is considerable, but it is largely hidden. Critically, these fallacies too often frame legal and policy debates, strongly influencing and even determining policy choices. While our volume does not (and indeed cannot) provide an exhaustive analysis of this …

Planning For Cognitive Decline: Combining Formal Supported Decision-Making Agreements And Healthcare Power Of Attorney, Megan S. Wright
Planning For Cognitive Decline: Combining Formal Supported Decision-Making Agreements And Healthcare Power Of Attorney, Megan S. Wright
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
Patients who have impaired decision-making abilities may not be permitted to make contemporaneous medical decisions. Instead, a substitute decision maker, including a healthcare agent, may be asked to decide on the patient’s behalf even if the patient wants to participate in the medical decision making. Being marginalized in decisions made about their medical care may lead to a decline in wellbeing for these patients. But supported decision making, wherein a person with cognitive impairments receives decision-making assistance, may facilitate such patients making contemporaneous medical decisions. As supported decision-making legislation spreads throughout the United States, there are questions about how this …

Academic Preparedness And Institutional Support For Low-Income Students: A Scoping Review Of College Success And Retention, Davina Wilson
Academic Preparedness And Institutional Support For Low-Income Students: A Scoping Review Of College Success And Retention, Davina Wilson
Social Work Theses - Archive
Students from lower-funded high schools often enter college with lower levels of academic preparedness and limited access to advanced coursework, individualized advising, and extracurricular opportunities, all of which contribute to disparities in retention and academic success. These inequities, rooted in longstanding school funding gaps and systemic barriers, disproportionately affect first-generation and racially minoritized students, who may also experience cultural mismatch or isolation within college environments. This scoping review synthesizes existing research conducted by other scholars to examine how academic preparedness and institutional support services such as tutoring, mentoring, bridge programs, and college transition initiatives influence college readiness for students from …
Social Drivers Of Suicide In Rural And Urban Texas Counties, Maria Y. Vaughan
Social Drivers Of Suicide In Rural And Urban Texas Counties, Maria Y. Vaughan
Social Work Theses - Archive
Abstract
Suicide remains a critical public health issue in Texas, with rural counties consistently experiencing higher mortality rates than urban areas. This study examined county-level suicide rates across Texas and analyzed how demographic characteristics and Social Drivers of Suicide (SDoS)—including economic stability, education access and quality, health care access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context—relate to suicide outcomes. Using a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational design, secondary data from the 2024 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps and the American Community Survey were analyzed for 170 Texas counties with reliable suicide data. Results showed that rural …

Unintended pregnancies have been linked to adverse outcomes such as pre-term births and low infant birthweight (Harron et al., 2020), psychological distress(Abbasi et al., 2013; Barton et al., 2017; Gauthreaux et al., 2017; Mercier et al., 2013), relationship strain (Barton et al., 2017; Moseson et al., 2019), intimate partner violence (IPV) and reproductive coercion (K. T. Grace & Anderson, 2018), and economic strain from unanticipated medical costs despite insurance coverage (Trussell, 2007). Unintended pregnancy outcomes offer crucial insights into the complexities of women's reproductive desires and intentions (CDC, 2023; Rossen et al., 2023). These outcomes inform public health interventions to …
Understanding Middle School Teachers’ Content Knowledge And Pedagogical Content Knowledge For Effective Teaching Of The Nature Of Science, Austin C. Wilson
Understanding Middle School Teachers’ Content Knowledge And Pedagogical Content Knowledge For Effective Teaching Of The Nature Of Science, Austin C. Wilson
Curriculum and Instruction (Ed.D.) Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine middle school science teachers’ knowledge of the nature of science (NOS) and their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) for teaching NOS. Developing students’ scientific literacy requires teachers who not only understand NOS but also know how to effectively integrate it into classroom instruction. This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study investigated in-service middle school science teachers’ NOS content knowledge (NOS-CK), their NOS-PCK, the relationship between these two constructs, and the extent to which demographic variables predicted teacher knowledge. NOS-CK and NOS-PCK data were collected from 61 teachers in a large suburban district through the Views …

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Over the last half century, global religious affiliation to new Pentecostal denominations has grown rapidly, with this growth concentrated in low income countries. This thesis investigates one economic factor influencing this growth - rural-urban migration. Religious institutions attract members by serving as hosts for economic and social networks, a service which interacts strongly with the migration process. I present new evidence from Ghana to test the link between migration and religious affiliation, using data from the ISSER Northwestern-Yale Panel Survey (GSPS) and a survey of Pentecostal churches in Accra. In the first chapter, I consider the effect of migration on the …
Examining Political Knowledge And Trust In The U.S Federal Government, Sheila Alvarez
Examining Political Knowledge And Trust In The U.S Federal Government, Sheila Alvarez
History and Political Science | Senior Theses
The United States is a representative democracy and as such requires participation from its citizens to function; in order to participate, citizens need to have information. Trust in social institutions is often contingent on our knowledge about those institutions. For instance, increased trust in scientists, science, or both, can be affected by educational achievement and scientific knowledge (Yen & Zampelli, 2022). The relationship between trust and knowledge highlights how an understanding of concepts leads to higher receptivity (Yen & Zampelli, 2022). Research has also suggested political knowledge is a driving force of political participation and tolerance (Delli Carpini & Keeter, …

17. Our Teaching Excellence: Effective Teaching As An Inherently Collective Endeavor To Enhance Student Learning, Melissa E. Ko
Documenting Teaching Excellence
Higher education has long pursued excellence in its core pillars: research, service, and teaching. Yet, public trust in higher education is at an all-time low. In 2024, nearly 1 in 3 Americans reported little to no confidence in higher education (Nietzel, 2024). Another survey revealed that 1 in 2 Americans think a college degree is less important now for getting a well-paying job compared to 20 years ago (Pew Research Center, 2024). Individual faculty continue to secure tenure through demonstrated teaching excellence, yet higher education struggles to convince the American public of its effectiveness. Why does this discrepancy exist?
Lawyers’ And Law Professors’ Experience With Worker Governance, Brett H. Mcdonnell
Lawyers’ And Law Professors’ Experience With Worker Governance, Brett H. Mcdonnell
Articles
Part I surveys some of the leading arguments concerning the benefits and costs of worker governance. It also describes some of the ways in which those benefits and costs can evolve along with the growth, or lack thereof, of companies with worker governance. Part II looks at governance in law firms. It considers how the explanations for the adoption of worker governance fare with respect to law firms, notes the limited, elitist nature of worker governance within law firms, and considers the consequences of that real but elitist worker governance for the understanding of lawyers. Part III considers the same …

On one hot summer day in the middle of a 3-month stint studying Mandarin Chinese at National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) in Taichung, Taiwan, my friends and I were desperate to sate our appetites after class, even in the atrociously hot and humid conditions. Most of our little group was drawn to a 牛肉麵 niúròu miàn (beef noodle) shop, but the thought of hot soup on a day like this drove me and a couple of others to continue our search. We stumbled upon another outdoor restaurant—though “restaurant” is perhaps a loose term for the holey-tent-covered food stand with mismatched …

Randomized Participant Compensation: An Early Investigation Into Social Influence In Cheating Games, Anthony J. Emerick
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
I used an experimental design to investigate the social influences on the frequency of participant dishonesty. While using an established design, I incorporated the social variables of inequality and exchange to test their relationship with the frequency of cheating behavior, as well as three intervening attitudinal variables of frustration, justification, and solidarity. In this study, in sharp contrast with published economic studies, no cheating behavior was observed. However, significant relationships were observed between participant attitudes, demographic information, and experimental conditions. In my analysis, I focus on three of these, looking at what future research might be possible to further investigate …
