Using Institutional Habitus To Position Colleges And Universities As Social Actors, Derria Byrd
Using Institutional Habitus To Position Colleges And Universities As Social Actors, Derria Byrd
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
In this article, derria byrd contends that more robust interrogation of the organizational contribution to inequity in higher education would be aided by understanding higher education organizations as social actors. Organizational social actor theory demonstrates that colleges and universities are more than inert contexts in which marginalized students' experiences and outcomes play out. They are entities that possess unique dispositional orientations, motives, and inclinations toward action. This conceptual article argues that engagement with institutional habitus, grounded in Pierre Bourdieu's theory of practice, situates colleges and universities as social actors whose structural positions generate interests, beliefs, and behaviors that tend …

Electronic health care records offer big data to mine and analyze towards improving public health outcomes. The information extracted, specifically social network data, could help us understand the primary care referrals for patients experiencing alcohol use disorder and wield that knowledge to better inform the engagement of this patient population. Network exposure and affiliation exposure models are two metrics that can be utilized to analyze the influence of social networks. We developed a core software library that address the scalability issue of our previous work. Our library computed high volume, randomly generated network graphs that range from 500–10,000 nodes (~126,000–40 …

Struggles Around Transgenderism In Hungarian Feminism: An Autoethnographic Account, Dalma Feró
Struggles Around Transgenderism In Hungarian Feminism: An Autoethnographic Account, Dalma Feró
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
In this autoethnography, I am using my personal experiences as data to examine the inextricable personal, political, social, and cultural aspects of one of the most decisive ruptures in Hungarian “progressive” activism of the second half of the 2010s. In the mid-2010s, I was part of an informal collective of women that started to outline a feminist approach critical of mainstream individualistic renditions of women’s rights as social progress, thereby diverging fundamentally from the country’s institutionalised feminism. As I and the circle of women I worked with focused on women’s reproductive autonomy, we encountered central feminist questions about sex and …
A Reconstruction Of Gender: Implications Of Social Construct And Gender Structure Theories, Bethany Rozario Steinhagen
A Reconstruction Of Gender: Implications Of Social Construct And Gender Structure Theories, Bethany Rozario Steinhagen
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
The relationship between gender and social construction has long been discussed in feminist and gender studies scholarship. However, the current discussion on gender has run up against a blockage of misapplication of social construct theory. To untangle this blockage, my analysis applies the philosophy of social construction as explained by Ian Hacking in his 1999 book The Social Construction of What? and the framework of gender as a social structure as put forth by feminist sociologist Barbara Risman since the early 2000s. I apply these frameworks to elucidate better the logical implications that follow from a social construct thesis about …

Blind And Low-Vision Students As Surveyors Of In/Accessibility In Technology-Mediated Formal Education, Natalie Shaheen
Blind And Low-Vision Students As Surveyors Of In/Accessibility In Technology-Mediated Formal Education, Natalie Shaheen
Faculty Publications - College of Education
K-12 institutions are slowly realizing (a) that many of the instructional technologies they use are inaccessible and (b) that technical debt oppresses blind and low-vision (BLV) students. Herein, I report the findings from a qualitative exploration of how BLV students differentiate between accessible and inaccessible technology-mediated education. The findings suggest that in/accessible technology-mediated education is an assemblage of learning, access labor, teachers, technologies, temporalities, and affectivities. I argue that to construct technology-mediated education that is equitable and accessible to BLV students K-12 institutions must do more than pay off their technical debt. I conclude with recommendations for how K-12 institutions …

Geographic Distance And State's Grip: Information Asymmetry, State Inattention, And Firm Implementation Of State Policy, Xiyi Yang, Heli Wang, Xiaoyu Zhou
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this study, we develop the argument that geographic distance between the state and local governments undermines the state's capacity to influence the implementation of state policies by local organizations. Drawing from information economics and the attention-based view, we propose that physical distance reduces the state's monitoring effectiveness through two interrelated mechanisms: information asymmetry and state leaders' inattention to distant issues. Using data of Chinese public firms' implementation of environmental activities between 2008 and 2016, we find that firms conduct fewer environmental activities required by the state when they are regulated by local governments that are more geographically distant to …

Economic Inequality And Political Participation In East Asian Democracies: The Role Of Perceived Income Inequality And Intergenerational Mobility, Mi-Son Kim, Dongkyu Kim, Sang-Jic Lee
Political Science Faculty Publications
This study examines how perceptions of economic inequality affect political participation focusing on East Asian democracies. It develops nuanced predictions on how perceptions of income inequality and social mobility and their interplay affect individuals’ engagement in various types of political activities in six East Asian democracies. Using the fourth wave of the Asian Barometer Survey, we examine novel arguments built upon the existing inequality-participation nexus. Our analysis suggests that inequality is a multifaceted concept, and the mechanisms of the inequality-participation nexus could vary depending on the regional, socioeconomic, and political context.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots have made significant strides in generating human-like conversations. With AI's expanding capabilities in mimicking human interactions, its affordability and accessibility underscore the potential of AI chatbots to facilitate negative emotional disclosure or venting. The study's primary objective is to highlight the potential benefits of AI-assisted venting by comparing its effectiveness to venting through a traditional journaling platform in reducing negative affect and increasing perceived social support. We conducted a pre-registered within-subject experiment involving 150 participants who completed both traditional venting and AI-assisted venting conditions with counterbalancing and a wash-out period of 1-week between …

Objective: This paper aims to investigate the key factors, including demographics, socioeconomics, physical wellbeing, lifestyle, daily activities and loneliness that can impact depressive symptoms in the middle-aged and elderly population using machine learning techniques. By identifying the most important predictors of depressive symptoms through the analysis, the findings can have important implications for early depression detection and intervention. Participants: For our cross-sectional study, we recruited a total of 976 volunteers, with a specific focus on individuals aged 50 and above. Each participant was requested to provide their demographic, socioeconomic information and undergo several physical health tests. Additionally, they were asked …
Volumetric Subdivision And The Architectures Of Property, Douglas C. Harris
Volumetric Subdivision And The Architectures Of Property, Douglas C. Harris
All Faculty Publications
Henry Smith’s influential architectural or modular theory of property places things, defined by the right to exclude, at its core. Property as “The Law of Things” relies on an exclusionary strategy, augmented with governance strategies that delineate particular rights of use, to define owned things and to enable their uses. This Article considers that claim and Smith’s call for multi-dimensional theorizing that accounts for property in “the real world” and “in real life” through an analysis of the increasingly common practice of volumetric subdivision to produce three-dimensional property. Focussing on the statutory frameworks in the Canadian province of British Columbia, …

Death And Disappearance: Measuring Racial Disparities In Mortality And Life Expectancy Among People In State Prisons, United States 2000-2014, Bryan L. Sykes, Ernest K. Chavez, Justin D. Strong
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Background Research on carceral institutions and mortality finds that people in prisons and jails have a high risk of death immediately following release from custody and that while incarcerated, racial disparities in prisoner mortality counter observed death patterns among similarly situated non-incarcerated, demographic groups. Yet, many of these studies rely on data prior to the millennium, during the COVID-19 pandemic, or are relegated to a small number or select group of states. In this paper, we explore changes in mortality and life-expectancy among different demographic groups, before and after the Great Recession, across forty-four states that reported deaths in custody …
The Gender Sidelining Trap In Mediator Selection, Erin E. Gleason Alvarez
The Gender Sidelining Trap In Mediator Selection, Erin E. Gleason Alvarez
Journal of Dispute Resolution
One of the greatest advantages of commercial mediation is the parties’ ability to construct the process to fit their needs. In mediation, parties are free to make decisions about how the conversation will be structured—whether in person or online, joint session or not, whether negotiations will take place over a few hours or days, and so forth. Here, parties are also uniquely empowered to design what their settlement will ultimately look like—or decide if settlement is even appropriate. Perhaps most importantly, parties decide who will serve as the mediator, the person they trust to facilitate their discussions and negotiations, and …

Toward A Critical Pedagogy Of Assessment Integrating Social Studies Education: The Proposed Socio-Critical Assessment Integration Framework (Scaif), Caroline O. Alordiah, Regina Arisi
Journal of Research Initiatives
The Socio-Critical Assessment Integration Framework (SCAIF) and its consequences for social studies education are examined in this study. The results emphasize the advantages of developing inclusive learning environments, encouraging comprehensive evaluation procedures, encouraging applicability to the real world, and giving students agency by allowing participation in the evaluation process actively. Teachers can promote social justice, question prevailing narratives, and foster critical discourse in the classroom using a critical pedagogy lens. Student learning outcomes are improved by authentic assessment activities that reflect real-world problems and demand that students use their knowledge in meaningful ways. Inclusive learning settings respect student diversity, encourage …

Student-Conscious Practice And Pathways For Student Success, Anthony Walker, Sara Mata
Journal of Research Initiatives
This paper shares evidence of how four programs enhanced students' pathways from high school through bachelor's degrees. Each program expanded students' networks, fostered a sense of belonging, and developed critical thinking skills. Ten years after participation, we looked back to gain insights into key elements that impacted students' learning experience. Data from student voices highlighted the importance of inclusiveness in action, institutional responsibility, and culturally relevant pedagogy in student success and program impact.

Drivers And Barriers To Financial Transparency In Georgia’S Local Governments, Min S. Kim
The Guardianship Journal
This study investigates the determinants of financial transparency in local governments, specifically measured by the availability of financial documents on official websites. Hypotheses were developed to examine the relationships between financial transparency and three categories of influencing factors: community environmental characteristics, governance structures, and financial conditions. Using empirical analysis on a sample of 159 counties in Georgia, the findings reveal varying levels of support for the proposed hypotheses. Key determinants of financial transparency include population size, median household income, and the size of the board of commissioners. Conversely, financial condition factors were not found to significantly influence financial transparency. These …

Exploring Modern Data Accessibility Surrounding Police-Involved Killings Of Black Citizens, Chloe Robinson, Jenna L. Borseth
The Guardianship Journal
The need for greater data transparency regarding police-involved killings has been a recurring issue raised by scholars in the field. With limited means of using official policing data, research in the area of police-involved fatalities and other critical policing issues has relied on alternative data sources. While the government has historically failed to instill a mechanism for systematically collecting this information, the development of the Use-of-Force Data Collection in 2019 was an initial step in improving data transparency. The current study seeks to reassess the accessibility and utility of various data sources following the publication of the Use-of-Force Data Collection. …

People in marginalized communities experience reduced quality of healthcare due to complex interactions between implicit bias, stereotypes, and structural inequities, but future healthcare providers remain unprepared to confront these problems. To address the issue of health inequities in health sciences education, a project-based learning seminar for undergraduates called “Biology of Inequity” was developed and offered by the Department of Anthropology at [redacted] University in Spring semester 2022. Following the project-based learning (PBL) framework, the course was extremely interactive, culminating in a project where students were asked to “materially improve health inequalities out in the real world.” The students responded by …

The Dominance Of The Center And The Control Of The Memory: Systematic Reading Of The Mu'allaqat Of Imru' Al-Qais And Amr Ibn Kulthum, Mohammad B. Qadri, Abed Alkhaleq Esa
An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
The study attempts to find out the systematic questions in the mu'allaqat of Imru’ al-Qais and Amr ibn Kulthum, relying on a number of theories, perhaps the most important of which are cultural, post-colonial, and hegemonic studies, whether political or masculine. The study follows the approach of cultural and systematic theory that focuses on the text’s systemic boundaries rather than the linguistic and literary boundaries. The study concludes that Imru' al-Qais and Amr can re-read their poetry in terms of their being political, no matter how different their poetic purposes may be, based on their influence on their cultural and …

Time spent in nature leads to significant physical and mental benefits, but research is mixed on how much time in nature is necessary to affect change in adults' mental health. This meta-analysis aimed to answer the question: what effect does length and interval of nature dosage have on adults with mental illness? The authors defined nature exposure as an experience in nature lasting at least 10 minutes and taking place in an actual natural setting. Because some studies indicated single experiences of exposure to nature (one-time) while others utilized multiple exposures to nature (interval), these studies were separated to determine …
