“But How Do I Start?” A Beginner’S Guide To Your First Qualitative Project, Jason B. Whiting Phd, Bria Nicole Davies

The Qualitative Report

Many new qualitative researchers feel overwhelmed and struggle to find direction in existing books and articles about qualitative methodology. Qualitative methods have a long history that includes different philosophies, practices, and methods, and there are endless ways to interpret and use these tools within these traditions. This article introduces basic qualitative methods with the intent to guide a first-time researcher through a first social science research project, such as a thesis or dissertation. It frames the process as a five-step journey with guidelines to follow and additional resources that can be accessed related to each phase. Although the craft of …

Teaching Information Literacy in a GenAI World:
A 5Cs Framework for Fostering Critical Engagement

This interactive workshop will equip participants with a robust framework for teaching students the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the modern, multifaceted information ecosystems upon which GenAI is built and operates. The 5Cs of news literacy (context, creation, content, circulation, and consumption), as outlined in Tully, Maksl, Ashley, Vraga, and Craft (2021), will be adapted to information literacy more broadly and we will explain how that framework presents an excellent foundation upon which broader information literacy knowledge and skills can be built. As GenAI becomes …

Publications and Research

At the request of New York State's Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), researchers from John Jay College of Criminal Justice conducted an assessment of over a decade of state-funded violence prevention initiatives implemented at the county level. Beginning in 2010 and expanding significantly after 2021, these initiatives were adopted by nearly two dozen counties by 2014. Research teams from the Research and Evaluation Center (JohnJayREC) and the Data Collaborative for Justice (DCJ) analyzed county-level trends in serious and violent crime between 2010 and 2023 to assess the potential impact of these investments on community safety outcomes. The study aimed …

The Disinformation Vaccine: A Case For Integrating Comprehensive Disinformation Education Into First Year Writing Classes, Benjamin F. Jackson

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Students’ exposure to disinformation and misinformation is far greater than it has ever been. As the ability of generative AI to produce image, video, and audio deepfakes grows more sophisticated, disinformation will become even easier to spread and harder to detect. The rapid spread of social, political, scientific, and medical disinformation has been deadly and its potential is disastrous. Security experts now warn that dis/misinformation is the greatest threat to national security. Americans at large and students in particular have a demonstrated lack of information literacy when it comes to detecting false information, and bad actors nationally and globally are …

Tuan's Topophilia: The Making Of A Citation Classic, Dean Sinclair

The Geographical Bulletin

First published in 1974, Yi-Fu Tuan's work Topophilia has become one of the most cited works in human geography. Using the method of citation analysis and data from the Citation Indexes, this paper explores the frequency of Topophilia's inclusion as a reference in scholarly literature. A temporal trend is identified, which indicates that citation to Topophilia rose in the late 1970s, dropped in the early 1980s, but rose again in the late 1980s. Within journals, the references to Topophilia by geographers has declined since the 1980s while citations in literature in the humanities has increased since the late 1980s. A …

Strategies For Technology Adoption In Small- And Medium-Sized Enterprises To Improve Competitiveness, Anthony Marcus Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the food and beverage industry play a vital role in local economies but face significant challenges in adopting technology to remain competitive. Without effective growth and sustainability strategies, SME leaders may face business closures that will lead to job losses, economic instability, and lost innovation opportunities. Grounded in the technology acceptance and diffusion of innovations models, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore effective strategies used by food and beverage SME owners in California to integrate new technologies. Participants included six SME owners who had operated their businesses for over five …

Navigating Turbulent Skies: Class Action Waivers In The Airline Industry And The Quest For Passenger Justice, Macarena Alejandra Bazan Hidalgo Feb 2025

Navigating Turbulent Skies: Class Action Waivers In The Airline Industry And The Quest For Passenger Justice, Macarena Alejandra Bazan Hidalgo

University of Miami Business Law Review

In the ever-evolving skies of the airline industry, airline passengers have continued to benefit from distinctive safeguards, even in the wake of deregulation. As its principal protector, the Department of Transportation has consistently demonstrated its commitment to treating airline customers as a distinct and significant group of consumers. However, these well-intentioned regulations often go unchecked, inadvertently paving the way for airline companies to exploit loopholes, leading to unjust practices. This, in turn, inflicts significant harm upon one of the most crucial consumer segments in the United States. A prime example of this issue is the collaborative effort by airline companies …

Monroe Work's Contributions To Public Sociology, Leonard A. Steverson, Gabrielle S. Kelly, Emma R. Torres

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Abstract

Monroe Work was a Chicago School trained sociologist, criminologist, and researcher who, despite not being well-known in the social sciences, produced a body of research that is exemplified in what is now known as public sociology. Work was associated with prominent sociologist and activist W.E.B. Du Bois while working in Savannah, Georgia, and later with Booker T. Washington, with whom he worked at the Tuskegee Institute, heading the records and research department. Work was a talented researcher who worked behind the scenes with both Du Bois and Washington to provide needed research in a time of intense racial conflict. …

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

This study explores the experiences of Iranian women in the divorce process, focusing on their perceptions of inequality from the viewpoints of women in Iranian family courts. Qualitative data were gathered from 10 interviews, including 10 women, and field observations in homes, workplaces, and courthouses. We focus on Iranian women's views on gender inequality during divorce, assessing legal, economic, and sociocultural factors. Thematic analysis identified three main areas of inequality: legal, economic, and sociocultural, revealing the complex obstacles women face during divorce. The study shows how family support, education, religiosity, and employment status shape women's experiences. The findings highlight the …

The Lived Experience Of Leaders With Work-Related Unresolved Grief, Jennifer Harden Feb 2025

The Lived Experience Of Leaders With Work-Related Unresolved Grief, Jennifer Harden

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Unresolved grief within organizational contexts has remained an underexplored area in literature, with most research focusing on grief related to personal loss rather than unique challenges leaders face during organizational transitions. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological hermeneutic study was to explore and understand the leaders’ lived experiences with unresolved grief for addressing intricate emotions, perceptions, and coping mechanisms within the context of organizational change. The grief model, the dual process model, and the sensemaking theory grounded this study. Ten human services industry leaders were participants in semistructured interviews. The thematic analysis revealed four themes: the emotional and physical toll …

Opioid Use Disorder In Region 9 Of Louisiana: Using Labeling Theory To Understand The Layperson's Perception, Sara Elizabeth Dupree-Wolf Feb 2025

Opioid Use Disorder In Region 9 Of Louisiana: Using Labeling Theory To Understand The Layperson's Perception, Sara Elizabeth Dupree-Wolf

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The overall research problem in this research study was that there were no current data related to the layperson's perception of opioid use disorder using labeling theory in Region 9 of Louisiana. This study is essential because opioid use disorder affects people worldwide, and the number of people diagnosed with opioid use disorder rises annually. Annually, thousands of people overdose, with a plethora of these overdoses resulting in death, due to opiate use. These deaths are unnecessary because there are treatment options and resources available. However, stigma and fear keep people from accessing potentially lifesaving resources. The purpose was to …

Hypergraph Association With Lie Algebra Of Upper Triangular Matrices And Its Application To Wireless Networks, Supriya S Feb 2025

Hypergraph Association With Lie Algebra Of Upper Triangular Matrices And Its Application To Wireless Networks, Supriya S

Theses and Dissertations

A hypergraph is a generalized graph characterized by edges spanning more than one vertices describing multiple relationships among them. It provides a mathematical framework for comprehending and learning about a wide range of real-world challenges. On the other side, the theory of non-associative algebras, such as Jordan, Octonions, Malcev, and Lie, has found significant impetus in recent years. These structures proved intriguing from an algebraic standpoint; they generated novel concepts and approaches that aided in solving specific classic algebraic problems, also progressing towards application.

A preeminent observation that galvanizes this thesis is that hypergraph association is still unexplored in Lie …

Integrating Intercultural Competencies In An Introductory Business Information Literacy Course, Annette Bochenek, Heather A. Howard, Zoeanna A. Mayhook

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Librarians at a large Midwestern university integrated intercultural competencies into an information literacy course taught annually to over 100 first-year business students. The interventions aim to improve intercultural skills and characteristics as defined by the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AACU) Intercultural Knowledge and Competence VALUE Rubric. Student intercultural competencies were assessed via online surveys according to the VALUE Rubric, comparing pre-, retrospective, and post-self-assessments. Students' intercultural competencies changed as a result of engaging with the course material. This paper describes the classroom interventions implemented by librarians, results from survey data analysis, and implications for library instruction.

The Influence Of The Emerging Italian Instrumental Style Of The Early Seventeenth Century On Adam Jarzębski’S Canzoni E Concerti (1627), Ellen Bolger Feb 2025

The Influence Of The Emerging Italian Instrumental Style Of The Early Seventeenth Century On Adam Jarzębski’S Canzoni E Concerti (1627), Ellen Bolger

Theses

Adam Jarzębski’s Canzoni e Concerti (1627) is an important source of instrumental chamber music from early seventeenth-century Poland. Jarzębski was a member of the royal musical establishment at the court of Sigismund III Vasa, where he worked alongside Italian musicians recruited by the court. The influence of the emerging Italian stile moderno can be seen in the 27 works of Canzoni e Concerti, which mirror the style and structure of instrumental works by Italian composers such as Dario Castello and Biagio Marini. The changing ideas on music theory and musical expression which originated in Italy are reflected in Jarzębski’s use …

The Impacts Of Software Development Methodologies On New Model Success Rate In The U.S. Automotive Industry, Marquita Aleatrice Tucker Feb 2025

The Impacts Of Software Development Methodologies On New Model Success Rate In The U.S. Automotive Industry, Marquita Aleatrice Tucker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Since 2017, the U.S. automotive industry has experienced a decrease in new-model launch success rate. A single 12-month delay in a new vehicle launch may cost a manufacturer up to $200 million. One component of automotive product development is software development. The research problem was a lack of understanding of the challenges with software development methodologies from the perspective of software developers, preventing managers from implementing methodologies, policies, and processes to improve the rates of successful new model launches. The purpose and the research questions were focused on exploring the lived experiences of software developers in the U.S. automotive industry …

Lack Of Diverse Leadership In A Highly Diverse Culture In A Military Unit Within The U.S. Armed Forces: Promoting Diversity And Inclusivity, Renika J. Pruitt Feb 2025

Lack Of Diverse Leadership In A Highly Diverse Culture In A Military Unit Within The U.S. Armed Forces: Promoting Diversity And Inclusivity, Renika J. Pruitt

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The problem addressed was the potential lack of diverse leadership in a highly diverse culture within a military unit in the U.S. Armed Forces. Despite a demographic variety among service members, leadership roles remain primarily dominated by the majority, white males. I explored systemic barriers to leadership diversity, including implicit biases, traditional selection practices, and limited mentorship opportunities for diverse service members. The research included a sample of 30 leaders as the primary population and 30 survey responses from junior service members for triangulation purposes. A flexible, single-case study design was chosen to explore this issue thoroughly. Key findings revealed …

The Communication Theory Of Argumentativeness: A Study Analyzing Argumentativeness And Demographics, Monika Joanna Yates Feb 2025

The Communication Theory Of Argumentativeness: A Study Analyzing Argumentativeness And Demographics, Monika Joanna Yates

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Quantitative research regarding the communication theory of argumentativeness is presented. The communication theory of argumentativeness, with its established argumentativeness conceptualization, scale, and measure, is central. The argumentativeness conceptualization, scale, and measure are used to posit argumentativeness groupings, which are then analyzed along with demographics within argumentativeness groupings. The following research questions are posed and answered: What is the distribution of argumentativeness within the general population? Are there identifiable segments/groupings of argumentativeness within the general population? Are there certain demographic characteristics that accompany the argumentativeness groupings of low, middle, and high argumentativeness measures? The conclusion finds: there are identifiable argumentativeness groupings; …

An Investigation Of Homicide And Aggravated Assault Rates In Relation To Police Attrition, Terence Sweeney Feb 2025

An Investigation Of Homicide And Aggravated Assault Rates In Relation To Police Attrition, Terence Sweeney

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Between January 2021 and December 2022, a surge in retirements and resignations among U.S. police departments coincided with a notable rise in violent crime in urban areas. This correlational study used a retrospective approach to test the theory that a correlation existed between the unprecedented attrition of sworn officers following the 2020 social unrest and the contemporaneous sudden spike in violent crime rates in major cities during that same period. In addition, this study aimed to explore whether the four cities reacted similarly and simultaneously during the 24 months under study. The population under study was the attrition rates of …

Police And The Social Media Battlefield, Larry D. Anthony Mr. Feb 2025

Police And The Social Media Battlefield, Larry D. Anthony Mr.

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Social media has proven to be a powerful weapon shaping the opinions and actions of today's society. Police departments are unarmed in the battle of public opinion, and some feeble attempts to engage in social media have been disappointingly unsuccessful. Developing training for a social media team is the first step in positive interaction with the community by including educators, internet technology experts, community leaders, attorneys, experienced officers, and police leadership.

The restrictions in police policies for using social media predestines the effort useless. The police must engage in every area of social media with trained personnel and state of …

A Qualitative Study On University-Model® Schools And Their Impact On Students' Spiritual Formation, Michael Robert Wills Feb 2025

A Qualitative Study On University-Model® Schools And Their Impact On Students' Spiritual Formation, Michael Robert Wills

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The University-Model® School (UMS) system is an education model that allows students to attend a combination of in-classroom learning with a supported home learning environment (Turner, 2017). The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore the lived experiences of parents to understand their spiritual formation techniques for the development of students and the perceived impacts at University-Model® Schools. At this stage in the research, spiritual formation is defined as the process of conforming to Jesus's image in his service (Pettit, 2008). Howard's (2018) theology of spiritual formation is the theory guiding this study. The study examined the fostering of …
