The Damned, The Bad, And The Ugly: Our Society's Bad (And Occasionally Sinister) Habit Of Using Villains To Label, Deter, And Other, Lacey Danielle Hoffman Mar 2014

The Damned, The Bad, And The Ugly: Our Society's Bad (And Occasionally Sinister) Habit Of Using Villains To Label, Deter, And Other, Lacey Danielle Hoffman

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

As the most dynamic characters within a plot, villains have the ability to initiate change. To demonstrate the effect a villain can have, I have chosen two very different villains of popular culture—Theodora of Oz the Great and Powerful and the Joker of The Dark Knight—because these characters have a wide reach among the American audience. Theodora is a onedimensional villain whose lack of depth fails to prompt the audience to think critically and perpetuates the patriarchal issues portrayed in the film. The Joker, however, is captivating because he is complex and pushes the reader to think critically …

Rave Culture- A Tale Of Two Scenes, Christopher Mohr Mar 2014

Rave Culture- A Tale Of Two Scenes, Christopher Mohr

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

This article compares two iterations of rave culture through the perspective on scenes as outlined by Geoff Stahl in his essay "'It's Like Canada Reduced': Setting the Scene in Montreal." By applying both communication and sociopolitical theory to the comparison of the original rave scene to that of today's, a vivid understanding of how scenes and subcultures construct themselves- both within and around the cultural environments from which they are born- will become apparent.

Gender Differences In Text Messaging, Sara R. Shawcroft Mar 2014

Gender Differences In Text Messaging, Sara R. Shawcroft

Theses and Dissertations

Text messaging is a significant social phenomenon that merits investigation. Communications theories are well suited to this type of research because text messaging serves as both mediated communication and interpersonal communication. This kind of research can also contribute to a deeper understanding of communication differences between genders. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether there are gender differences in the use of text messaging and, if so, what the differences are. Participants for the study were recruited via convenience sampling. The sample consisted of 27 participants ages 18--35; 14 were female and 13 were male. Data were collected …

Qualitative And Visualization Methodologies For Modeling Social-Ecological Dimensions Of Regional Water Planning On The Rio Chama, Moises Gonzales, Jose A. Rivera, J. Jarrett Garcia, Sam Markwell Mar 2014

Qualitative And Visualization Methodologies For Modeling Social-Ecological Dimensions Of Regional Water Planning On The Rio Chama, Moises Gonzales, Jose A. Rivera, J. Jarrett Garcia, Sam Markwell

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Courses in modeling often employ techniques based on mathematical or other computer-based quantitative models. In this article the authors update a range of social science qualitative and visualization methodologies presented to graduate students at an interdisciplinary modeling course on water issues related to climate change. In part the modeling course featured the coupling of natural and human system dynamics in the context of acequias, gravity flow irrigation systems in New Mexico that depend on winter snowpack for water supply in the form of spring run-off. While student teams were able to employ STELLA and other models, they were free to …

Economic Foundations For The Interdisciplinary Modeling Of Water Resources Under Climate Change, Levan Elbakidze, Kelly M. Cobourn Mar 2014

Economic Foundations For The Interdisciplinary Modeling Of Water Resources Under Climate Change, Levan Elbakidze, Kelly M. Cobourn

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Climate change is likely to alter the scarcity of water resources, contributing to increased concern among policymakers and water managers about how to best allocate water among competing uses. Hydroeconomic models provide a means of integrating human and biophysical systems to understand the impacts of alternative water policies. This article discusses foundational concepts related to economic efficiency, with a specific focus on the equimarginal principle, and presents a modeling framework that demonstrates how to use these concepts as a starting point for an interdisciplinary model of water resources management. The modeling framework accommodates concerns about allocating water across competing uses, …

Hydrologic Connectivity Of Head Waters And Floodplains In A Semi-Arid Watershed, Carlos G. Ochoa, Steven J. Guldan, Andres F. Cibils, Stephanie C. Lopez, Kenneth G. Boykin, Vincent C. Tidwell, Alexander G. Fernald Mar 2014

Hydrologic Connectivity Of Head Waters And Floodplains In A Semi-Arid Watershed, Carlos G. Ochoa, Steven J. Guldan, Andres F. Cibils, Stephanie C. Lopez, Kenneth G. Boykin, Vincent C. Tidwell, Alexander G. Fernald

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Hydrologic connectivity can be important when assessing the role of water availability and distribution in sustaining different natural processes and human activities in a given landscape. We present a study that served as one of five case studies for an interdisciplinary modeling course. The main objectives of the study presented are: 1) to characterize the hydrologic connectivity between the uplands and the irrigated valley and; 2) to set the foundations for understanding the connections between hydrology and complementary disciplines of ecology, rangeland management, and system dynamics modeling in a semiarid watershed in the southwestern United States. Study results show a …

Many accomplishments of public health have been distributed unevenly among populations. This article reviews the concepts of applying evidence-based practice in public health in the face of the varied cultures and circumstances of practice in these varied populations. Key components of EBPH include: making decisions based on the best available scientific evidence, using data and information systems systematically, applying program planning frameworks, engaging the community and practitioners in decision making, conducting sound evaluation, and disseminating what is learned. The usual application of these principles has overemphasized the scientific evidence as the starting point, whereas this review suggests engaging the community …

Feeling Elite: The Collective Effervescence Of Team Usa At The 2012 Itu World Triathlon Grand Final, Caroline Faure, Karen M. Appleby, Beverly Ray

The Qualitative Report

Collective effervescence is an amplified, excited reaction made possible when a group of people experience something emotional together. We used a descriptive mixed methods approach to investigate both the individual and collective emotions of Team USA age group triathletes as they participated in the 2012 International Triathlon Union’s (ITU’s) Grand Final in Auckland, New Zealand. The results of our study suggest that participation in this event evoked emotions consistent with the themes of Intrinsic Arousal, Anxiety, National Pride, and Social Arousal. Further, the results indicated that this group of experienced athletes was less motivated by performance outcome goals (i.e., placing …

The Unremarkable Things Matter: A Book Review Of David Silverman's A Very Short, Fairly Interesting And Reasonably Cheap Book About Qualitative Research (2nd Ed.), Lun Li

The Qualitative Report

In this review of the book, A Very Short, Fairly Interesting and Reasonably Cheap Book about Qualitative Research by David Silverman, I write from the perspectives following Silverman’s arguments about “unremarkable things matter” in qualitative research. Based on his inspiring thoughts on modern qualitative research, I also express my reflective ideas as a doctoral student.

“Cheese And Chips Out Of Styrofoam Containers”: An Exploration Of Taste And Cultural Symbols Of Appropriate Family Foodways, Jm Parsons Mar 2014

“Cheese And Chips Out Of Styrofoam Containers”: An Exploration Of Taste And Cultural Symbols Of Appropriate Family Foodways, Jm Parsons

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Taste is considered a gustatory and physiological sense. It is also something that can be developed over time. In Bourdieu’s work taste is a matter of distinction, and a means of drawing boundaries between groups about what constitutes “good” taste. In this context it is necessary to perform or display tastes over and over again. This then becomes part of a cultural habitus, a code that can be read and understood. In the field of “feeding the family” (DeVault) for respondents in my study, healthy food prepared from scratch became the symbol of appropriate mothering, a means of demonstrating a …

Privatization Of Prisons: Costs And Consequences, Alex Friedmann, Kathryn Hamoudah, Alec Karakatsanis Mar 2014

Privatization Of Prisons: Costs And Consequences, Alex Friedmann, Kathryn Hamoudah, Alec Karakatsanis

Working in the Public Interest Conferences

The privatization of prisons is generally undertaken by states to lower the cost to the public of housing prisoners. Whether cost savings actually result is debatable. Importantly, the ways in which private prisons do cut costs are problematic from the perspective of public safety, human rights, and public policy. In some well-documented cases, prisoners have escaped due to lax security and poorly trained staff. More generally, staff turnover rates are often high and the compensation packages of private prison guards may be inadequate to attract the best candidates. The U.S. Department of Justice produced a report in June of 2013 …

Delivering Public Assistance: What Does It Mean To Follow The Law?, Patrick Cates, Keith Horton, Frances Fox Piven

Working in the Public Interest Conferences

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) is the rare public program that provides direct assistance to families in need. Georgia, like other states, receives block grants to administer TANF. What is the current state of the TANF program in Georgia and is assistance getting to those who need it? Should the state be more proactive in reaching out to those who qualify for assistance? Are there times when qualifying families are unable to access benefits due to administrative hurdles and poor customer service? What recourse do families have if they are not treated fairly by TANF administrators? This panel will …

Law Enforcement, Community, And Military Tactics: What’S The Conflict?, Stacey Cotton, Peter Kraska, James A. Pikl

Working in the Public Interest Conferences

Local law enforcement is a critical community service, and the expense of maintaining a modern and effective police force can be substantial in relation to local resources. At the same time, military equipment, SWAT teams, and aggressive search and seizure tactics have been called into question by the recurring loss of innocent life and Fourth Amendment concerns attendant to the use of overwhelming force. This panel will consider the funding mechanisms available to police and sheriff departments for equipment and capital investments, the incentives these revenues create, and the conflicts between community trust and the atmosphere of counter-insurgency which military …

Poverty In Suburbia: Are The Poor Out Of Reach?, Ellen Dunham-Jones, Dolly Jenkins-Mullen, Dwight Mullen, Benjamin Roth Mar 2014

Poverty In Suburbia: Are The Poor Out Of Reach?, Ellen Dunham-Jones, Dolly Jenkins-Mullen, Dwight Mullen, Benjamin Roth

Working in the Public Interest Conferences

The story of suburbs in America sweeps in much of this country’s modern history of sprawling land use and the self-segregation of affluent and middle class commuter communities. This panel will explore the current state of the suburbs and ask whether the infrastructure that supports a commuter economy is compatible with changing demographics. Who lives in the suburbs, and who speaks for them in local government? Are the children of lower income communities further disadvantaged in terms of income mobility by virtue of living in the suburbs? What problems arise when affordable housing is located in areas with poor public …

Apologies In The Marketplace, Kish Vinayagamoorthy

Pace Law Review

In order to better appreciate the insufficiency of money in repairing relationships, Part I describes the benefits that an apology brings to the injured party, transgressor, and the broader community in which the parties belong. Part II explains the increasing significance of relationships to certain categories of commercial transactions and provides examples of the types of relational damage that a contractual breach can cause to these commercial relationships. Part III explains how the benefits previously described in Part I are applicable to repairing the types of commercial relational harm described in Part II. Given that relationships matter especially in transnational …

Caught In The Cross-Fire: The Psychological And Emotional Impact Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (Idea) Upon Teachers Of Children With Disabilities, A Therapeutic Jurisprudence Analysis, Richard Peterson Mar 2014

Caught In The Cross-Fire: The Psychological And Emotional Impact Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (Idea) Upon Teachers Of Children With Disabilities, A Therapeutic Jurisprudence Analysis, Richard Peterson

Pace Law Review

The shortage of special education teachers in the United States, and the adverse consequences flowing from factors related to this condition provide a unique opportunity for scholars to study these issues through interdisciplinary research. Educational scholars have typically focused their research on educational practice and institutional policy. Although this scholarship frequently acknowledges the statutory and regulatory foundations of the IDEA, the literature does not generally adopt a legal framework for research purposes. This is not a criticism of educational scholars. It is merely an observation that opportunities exist to study special education teacher issues in a broader context. This Article …

Voting Rights Act Panel, Kareem Crayton, Brian Kemp, Tomas Lopez Mar 2014

Voting Rights Act Panel, Kareem Crayton, Brian Kemp, Tomas Lopez

Working in the Public Interest Conferences

Section V of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) required covered jurisdictions to obtain “preclearance” before making changes to voting laws. In Shelby County v. Holder, the Supreme Court held that the formula determining which jurisdictions were covered by Section V was unconstitutional. Following Shelby County, states previously covered by Section V began proposing changes to election laws. If those laws are in fact discriminatory they must now be challenged under Section II of the VRA, which places the burden on plaintiffs to show racial discrimination. This panel will provide an update on proposed and enacted election law changes being made …
