The Sociological And Cognitive Dimensions Of Policy-Based Persuasion, Michael R. Smith

Faculty Articles

Experts in legal advocacy have long recognized the importance of policy arguments in legal persuasion Despite the prevalence of policy arguments as tools in legal advocacy very little scholarship has been produced instructing legal advocates on how to write effective policy arguments in their briefs Professor Ellie Margolis addressed this oversight in modern advocacy pedagogy in her 2001 article Closing the Floodgates Making Persuasive Policy Arguments in Appellate BriefsProfessor Margolis' article brought muchneeded attention to the lack of adequate training in policybased persuasion and offered the first formalized instruction in that area This article builds on Professor Margolis' work by …

A Sequence Of French Vernacular Architectural Design And Construction Methods In Colonial North America, 1690 -- 1850, Wade Terrell Tharp Apr 2014

A Sequence Of French Vernacular Architectural Design And Construction Methods In Colonial North America, 1690 -- 1850, Wade Terrell Tharp

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines published and unpublished historical archaeological research, historical documents research, and datable extant buildings to develop a temporal and geographical sequence of French colonial architectural designs and construction methods, particularly the poteaux-en-terre (posts-in-ground) and poteaux-sur-solle (posts-on-sill) elements in vernacular buildings, from the Western Great Lakes region to Louisiana, dating from 1690 to 1850. Such a sequence is needed to provide a basis for scholarship, discovery, and hypotheses about prospective French colonial archaeological sites. The integration of architectural material culture data and the historical record could also further scholarship on subjects such as how the French in colonial North …

Anything You Can Do?: The Influence Of Role Models On Architecture Students’ Future Career Confidence, Sarah L. Lawrence Apr 2014

Anything You Can Do?: The Influence Of Role Models On Architecture Students’ Future Career Confidence, Sarah L. Lawrence

Research Papers

Since its professionalization in 1857, the field of architecture has been male dominated. Traditionally, the efforts of female architects have been constrained to sectors considered “appropriate” to their gender such as historic preservation and residential and interior design (Adams and Tancred 2000, American Architectural Foundation 1988). Efforts to promote gender equality more broadly have improved academic participation and, in 2012, women accounted for 42% of architecture students nationally (The National Architectural Accrediting Board, Inc. 2012). However, during the same year, women made up only 24% of the architecture workforce (Bureau of Labor Statistics 2012). Scholars and professionals attribute this gender …

Public Participation In The Implementation Of Forestry Decentralization In Indonesia, Emilianus Yakob Sese Tolo Apr 2014

Public Participation In The Implementation Of Forestry Decentralization In Indonesia, Emilianus Yakob Sese Tolo

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi

The implementation of decentralization in Indonesia brings two-fold effects. On the one hand, it has given more autonomy for regions to organize and manage their governmental affairs. However, on the other hand, regional autonomy causes problems in society, such as increased corruption, money politics, and environmental damage. By using descriptive-qualitative approach, the author evaluated the implementation of forestry decentralization in Indonesia with research focus in Manggarai and Central Maluku districts. This study found that the implementation of forestry decentralization ignored community involvement thus brought negative consequences such as the increasing damage to forest ecosystems and the declining public welfare. Therefore, …

Moving Beyond The College-Preparatory High School Model To A College-Going Culture In Urban Catholic High Schools, Ursula S. Aldana Apr 2014

Moving Beyond The College-Preparatory High School Model To A College-Going Culture In Urban Catholic High Schools, Ursula S. Aldana

Journal of Catholic Education

A college-going culture has been found to improve academic outcomes for underrepresented high school students (Allen, Kimura-Walsh, & Griffin, 2009; Stanton-Salazar, 2010). The research on Catholic high schools shows their college-preparatory environment ability to produce successful outcomes for African-American and Latino students (Bryk, Lee, & Holland, 1993). This study examines two urban Catholic high schools and how they construct opportunities for low-income Latino and African-American male students. The year-long study draws from 1) ethnographic field notes; 2) interviews with students and staff; 3) survey and 4) student data. Data suggests that although both schools focused on preparing students for college, …

Recovering The Social Dimension Of Reflection, Martin Thomas Connell Apr 2014

Recovering The Social Dimension Of Reflection, Martin Thomas Connell

Journal of Catholic Education

Upon its publication in 1983, Schön’s The reflective practitioner became almost instantly influential in the design of teacher education programs in North America. Within eight years of its publication, it was nearly impossible to find a teacher educator not emphasizing the importance of reflection (Erlandson, 2007; Zeichner & Tabachinick, 1981). Despite a paucity of research establishing its benefits, the practice continues to play an important role in teacher education programs, including programs for preservice teacher education located at Catholic colleges and universities. After describing how reflection in teacher education is popularly conceived and after reviewing critiques of the practice as …

Assessing The Role Of Online Technologies In Project-Based Learning, Jason Ravitz, Juliane Blazevski Apr 2014

Assessing The Role Of Online Technologies In Project-Based Learning, Jason Ravitz, Juliane Blazevski

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This study examines the relationships between teacher-reported use of online resources, and preparedness, implementation challenges, and time spent implementing project- or problem-based learning, or approaches that are similar to what we call “PBL” in general. Variables were measured using self-reports from those who teach in reform network high schools that emphasize PBL approaches (n = 166) and those who do not (n = 164). In both school types, technology use was positively related to the amount of PBL use and teacher preparedness. We used path analysis (two-group SEM) to test a model that predicted online technology use in the context …

Why Are Scandinavians So Happy?, John Hasselberg Apr 2014

Why Are Scandinavians So Happy?, John Hasselberg

Forum Lectures

Perhaps somewhat surprising to many in central Minnesota, Scandinavian societies are ranked as having the happiest people in the world. Long-term longitudinal studies such as "Development, Freedom, and Rising Happiness: A Global Perspective (1981-2007)" by Inglehart, Foa, Peterson and Welzel of the University of Leicester, and recent research reported by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network in its "World Happiness Report 2013", edited by Helliwell, Layard & Sachs, consistently come to the conclusion that Scandinavians are the happiest people in the world. Why? How is this possible? What can we learn from them?

Exploring Racial Disparities Of Victimization In Three Core Dimensions Of Stand Your Ground Law: The Case Of Florida, Toyin Isijola Apr 2014

Exploring Racial Disparities Of Victimization In Three Core Dimensions Of Stand Your Ground Law: The Case Of Florida, Toyin Isijola

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

‘Stand Your Ground’ (SYG) laws continue to be a source of controversy, even more so after the shooting death of an unarmed black teen in Florida, Trayvon Martin. Upon abolishing the ‘duty to retreat,’ the law has been criticized for allowing ordinary citizens to carry out vigilante justice. The media has shed light on a few incidents which indicate that young black males may be vulnerable to SYG laws. Prior research on SYG laws have mostly focused on racial disparities in the outcomes of cases and deterrence effects of the law, but this research should contribute to the study of …

A Generational Perspective Of Teachers' Perceptions Of Principals' Leadership Practices, Greg A. Doss Apr 2014

A Generational Perspective Of Teachers' Perceptions Of Principals' Leadership Practices, Greg A. Doss

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate if generational differences exist among teachers’ perceptions of the leadership practices of Boomer and Gen X principals. Leadership practices of principals have been studied for decades in education. This research study analyzed data of eight dimensions of leadership practices from the 75 item School Improvement Opinion Survey (2006). The critical literature suggests that generational differences do exist among Boomer, Gen X, and Millennial teachers and their perception of the leadership practices of Boomer and Gen X principals. This study found statistically significant differences in the mean scores among the three generations …
