Stigmatization Experiences Among People Living With Borderline Personality Disorder In Puerto Rico, Eliut Rivera-Segarra, Glendalys Rivera, Robmarie López-Soto, Gladys Crespo-Ramos, Domingo Marqués-Reyes

The Qualitative Report

The experiences of stigmatization among people living with specific Serious Mental Illnesses (SMI), such as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) has not been addressed by the scientific literature. In this study we wanted to explore how people living with BPD experience stigmatization. We examine the experiences of 8 people (7 women and 1 man) living and receiving treatment for BPD in Puerto Rico. We used an exploratory qualitative design with semi-structured interviews. To interpret our data, we conducted a thematic analysis. We discuss three categories that focus on one identified theme: the interpersonal dimension of the stigmatization process. These categories are …

The Evaluation Of Wellness Programs For Our Returning Veterans, Alexandra Rawson Apr 2014

The Evaluation Of Wellness Programs For Our Returning Veterans, Alexandra Rawson

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Today we continue to experience inefficiencies in understanding the mental health and cultural needs of returning service members. I have conducted my own personal research to best comprehend the emotions and needs of returning veterans, evaluating the practices that are most beneficial for healing and reintegration. The primary focus of my independent study was to observe the current mental health treatments that are offered to the veterans outside of the traditional medical realm. In relation to this, I wanted to evaluate the role that religious and spiritual practices play in the veterans’ healing process. I spent four months observing and …

Understanding Attitudes Towards Interracial Relationships Among College Students, Nicole Pierce, Meghan Burke, Faculty Advisor Apr 2014

Understanding Attitudes Towards Interracial Relationships Among College Students, Nicole Pierce, Meghan Burke, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The number of interracial couples in the United States remains low in today’s society. This study uses qualitative interviews and quantitative survey data from Illinois Wesleyan students to investigate the motivations, perceptions, and experiences of those who are currently, or were previously, in an interracial relationship. I also explore the attitudes of those who have not dated interracially, and the media’s impact on perceptions of interracial couples. I find that those who dated interracially did not see race as a deciding factor, but instead focused on personality, cultural similarities and differences, and appearances. Many students saw religion, peer and family …

Shakespeare's Madwomen: How Elizabethan Theatre Challenged The Perception Of Mental Afflictions, Hannah Dhue, Dani Snyder, Faculty Advisor Apr 2014

Shakespeare's Madwomen: How Elizabethan Theatre Challenged The Perception Of Mental Afflictions, Hannah Dhue, Dani Snyder, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

I would like to write about the perception of madness in Elizabethan England. William Shakespeare’s Hamlet will serve as my primary text and I will carefully examine Ophelia. However, it is my intent to use other works from the same era, perhaps even more examples from Shakespeare, to support my points.

Currently my research questions are as follows:

How did the theatrical representations of mad characters – particularly young women – in Elizabethan England reflect the perception of mental diseases and disorders at the time? To what extent were those representations serving as political comments? Were they typically in women …

Martin Luther: Vater Einer Allgemeinen Sprache? Martin Luther: Father Of A Common Language?, Annika Ewaldz, Adam Woodis, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Martin Luther is well known for his 95 Theses, in which he rejects the Catholic practice of selling indulgences; but it was his groundbreaking translation of the Bible into German that instigated the standardization of the German language. After his excommunication, Luther was in hiding in the Wartburg Castle, where he translated his Bible into a vernacular and cohesive form of the German language. Many different dialects were spoken throughout Germany at the time making communication between regions difficult. Luther’s translation soon became the most influential Bible in Germany and was disseminated quickly due to the recently invented printing …

Our Lives, Our Thoughts And Our Allegiance: New Immigrants And American Industry In 1914, Thomas Mackaman Apr 2014

Our Lives, Our Thoughts And Our Allegiance: New Immigrants And American Industry In 1914, Thomas Mackaman

Retrospection & Respect: The 1913-1914 Mining/Labor Strike Symposium of 2014

Through comparative analysis of the immigrant labor forces at work in iron mining in northern Minnesota, coal mining in Illinois, and steel milling in the Calumet region of Chicago and Gary, this paper addresses the forms of social distance separating and marginalizing new immigrants from American society and trade unionism that existed in 1914, the year that marked the end point of mass immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe.

The “new immigration” was a labor migration that congregated its subjects overwhelmingly in what were called "unskilled" or "semi-skilled" forms of labor. Skilled work was largely, with certain variations, the preserve …

The Notebook: An Accidental Alzheimer's Awareness Campaign, Danielle Waldron Apr 2014

The Notebook: An Accidental Alzheimer's Awareness Campaign, Danielle Waldron

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

My paper examines and critiques the portrayal of Alzheimer¹s disease in the popular film, The Notebook. Based off of a Nicholas Sparks novel, The Notebook uses Alzheimer¹s disease as a vehicle to relay a love story, but in doing so, presents a distorted picture of Alzheimer¹s disease to its audience. My paper compares the responsibilities of family caregivers of Alzheimer¹s patients in today¹s world with the unrealistic family caregiver, Noah, depicted on screen. My paper also explores and exposes inconsistencies between the attractive nursing home experience presented on screen and the less than ideal treatment patients experience in long term …

European American Cultural Values: Construct Clarification And Results From A Division 17 Survey, John Bruner, Ingrid Weigold

Great Lakes Regional Counseling Psychology Conference 2014

As the dominant culture in the United States, European Americans cultural values represent the beliefs that drive many aspects of our society. Authors have called for clinicians to be aware of how mainstream cultural values affect their worldview and practice with racial and ethnic minority individuals, but the counseling psychology literature lacks a cohesive framework defining these values with empirical support. This research attempts to first clarify the domains of European American cultural values through literature review and survey of APA members. Results indicate that seven domains make up the construct: autonomy, individual competitiveness, material achievement, mastery over nature, direct …

Homeless At Home In Missoula: Homelessness For The Mentally Ill, Tyler M. Cheesman

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Homeless at Home in Missoula: Homelessness for the Mentally Ill

Many homeless individuals have to battle through the hardships of meeting their daily basic needs: some of these individuals have to do this while dealing with a mental illness. In Missoula, many homeless individuals become clients of the Poverello Center; where they get help meeting their daily basic needs as well as get some support with their mental illness through case workers. This paper will discuss some of the obstacles that homeless individuals face when they have a mental illness. I will draw upon ethnographic fieldnotes describing approximately 40 hours …

A Theoretical Look At Sexual Minority Victimization And Outness To Family As A Protective Factor Against Lifetime Suicide Attempts, Charlotte M. Siegel Apr 2014

A Theoretical Look At Sexual Minority Victimization And Outness To Family As A Protective Factor Against Lifetime Suicide Attempts, Charlotte M. Siegel

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

A Theoretical Look at Sexual Minority Victimization and Outness to Family as a Protective Factor Against Lifetime Suicide Attempts

Purpose/Originality: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals are at increased risk for negative mental health outcomes, which has been linked to minority stress processes (Meyer, 2003). LGBTQ individuals are also at increased risk of victimization and suicidality (Shields, 2011). In some cases, identity disclosure may protect against suicidality (Morris, 2001). However, less is known about the effects of outness to one’s family. We examined the interaction of victimization and lifetime suicide attempts with family outness as a potential …

Balancing Efficiency And Compassion: Researching Best Practices For Homeless Shelter Policy Manuals, Ally Guldborg

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The purpose of this project is to use qualitative content analysis to help improve the policies and practices of the Poverello Center. The Poverello Center acts as an emergency shelter and food bank for persons experiencing hunger or homelessness in the Missoula area. The Poverello Center aims to balance efficiency and compassion as it provides these services to all who need them. In order to meet this goal, the organization must have clear and enforceable policies for staff, volunteers, and clients. The researcher will work in collaboration with the staff and administration of the Poverello Center to examine the organization’s …

Demand Prevention Interventions, Leslie Cyranowski Apr 2014

Demand Prevention Interventions, Leslie Cyranowski

Undergraduate Research Conference

Prostitution is prevalent in almost every culture, and while the United States is one of the only countries to have made prostitution almost entirely illegal, at least 100,000 US children are exploited into prostitution each year in America. The countries of Sweden and the Netherlands both employ distinct prostitution strategies designed to reduce the amount of commercial sexual exploitation. In this paper, I would like to examine how demand reduction strategies could help reduce the amount of commercial sexual exploitation in the United States.

The purpose of this analysis was to ascertain the effect of certain factors on U.S. public opinion relating to the protection of the environment. In addition, this analysis seeks to describe what voting patterns exist relating to environmental legislation in the U.S. Congress. The effects of the following factors on public opinion relating to environmental protection were considered: Family income, political ideology, party affiliation, and ethnicity. Congressional voting patterns were assessed by individual chamber (House of Representatives and Senate) and Congress as a whole body. The American National Election Studies (ANES) and voting data obtained from the Policy Agendas Project …

A Qualitative Analysis On Discourse In Occupational Segregation Along A Gender Dimension, Christine Bilunka Apr 2014

A Qualitative Analysis On Discourse In Occupational Segregation Along A Gender Dimension, Christine Bilunka

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The objective of this research project is to measure attitudes associated with occupational segregation by sex. Specifically, the researcher seeks to see how subjects participating in the study participate in job typing along gender lines. To do so, the researcher will utilize qualitative methods in a lab setting. These methods will include asking female subjects to view an array of photographs of men and women in occupation-specific attire and situations and write a short response to the photos.

In one condition, subjects will view two photographs of men in female-dominated work settings, in another they will be shown females in …

Barriers To Housing In Missoula Montana, Robert M. Howe Apr 2014

Barriers To Housing In Missoula Montana, Robert M. Howe

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

In Missoula, there are dozens of new apartments being built today, yet the homeless population continues to grow. The purpose of this research is to better understand what issues will keep a person out of a home and on the streets and to provide insights into alternatives to building more low-income homes. This project asks: what are the barriers to housing in Missoula for people who are already homeless or on the verge of being homeless? In order to understand what those barriers are, I will explore the perceptions that landlords hold toward the homeless population. Data will be collected …

Labor And Vulnerability Among Pastoralists In Northern Kenya, Bilinda Straight Apr 2014

Labor And Vulnerability Among Pastoralists In Northern Kenya, Bilinda Straight

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Award (FRACAA)

The research preliminarily examines the embodied implications of a vulnerable relationship –Samburu grandparents and their young caregivers in the context of contemporary intercommunity violence, globalization, and resource scarcity. While children are recognized caregivers of adults in numerous contexts cross-culturally, including in developed nations like the U.S. and Britain, research on this issue is scant within anthropology and recent in other fields such as geography, medicine, and public health, where it has developed primarily since the 1990s.

Effective Childrearing Of Young School-Aged Children: Evidence From College Enrolled Mothers, Kaitlyn Chiazza Apr 2014

Effective Childrearing Of Young School-Aged Children: Evidence From College Enrolled Mothers, Kaitlyn Chiazza

13th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Performance (2014)

A large amount of research relates a mother’s education and child academic achievement, but little has focused on the timing of a mother’s college enrollment. Previous research (Estelle 2011) finds significant gains in children’s reading scores when a mother is enrolled in college during the child’s kindergarten year. The cause of those gains are unknown. This collaborative economic research project focuses on father involvement to determine if the presence of a father figure in the household affects child academic achievement. If so, and if father involvement also increases during a mother’s enrollment, we would consider fathers to be an important …

Milk And Medicine Evaluation, David Blystra, Samantha Hartman

13th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Performance (2014)

The HIV and AIDS epidemic sweeping through Africa has taken an especially hard hit on Zambia. The disease has played a dramatic role in this nation’s identity and future, leaving many children orphaned. According to the Central Statistical Office of Zambia, 54.2% of children aged 3-59 months were considered malnourished in 2006. The purpose of this research is to evaluate a community-based feeding program in Lusaka, Zambia for AIDS orphans and other undernourished children. Since it was implemented in 2004 by the Christian Alliance for Children in Zambia (CACZ), the Milk and Medicine Program has provided formula, nutritional supplements, medicine …
