Women In Terrorism: Exploring The Motivations Of Women Joining Terrorist Organizations, Cara Rae Buchanan May 2014

Women In Terrorism: Exploring The Motivations Of Women Joining Terrorist Organizations, Cara Rae Buchanan

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Many studies try to identify the motivations of individuals to join terrorist organizations. Current research delves into personal, economic, political, and psychological motivations. This thesis looks at three terrorist organizations, the Chechen Black Widows, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, to identify the motivations of women joining these organizations. This study attempts to find important factors when looking at these motivations. In all three cases, different variables are present. After studying these factors, this study compares and finds similarities between the cases to understand motivations. This thesis finds that the most important factors …

I'M Not Just A Statistic: A Qualitative Analysis Of Sexual Assault Survivors, Kelsey Lynn Ruane May 2014

I'M Not Just A Statistic: A Qualitative Analysis Of Sexual Assault Survivors, Kelsey Lynn Ruane

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Empirical research shows that as many as 1 in 4 women in college will be raped or sexually assaulted. Despite the overwhelming prevalence of these crimes, survivors of sexual violence often feel uncertain, isolated, and fearful of judgment when coming forward to authorities. Even amidst improvements in sexual violence education and response, it appears there is still something missing in the way that sexual crimes are handled. This research, based on in-depth interviews with women who have been assaulted or raped, addresses the processes of meaning-making women use following an experience of sexual violence. Common themes include victim blaming, emotion …

Conference Papers

Cathode Ray Memories: Television as memory and social practice

The history of television in Ireland is, predominantly, an institutional history. Indeed, rather than studying television in Ireland most commentary addresses Irish television as embodied by Radio Telefís Éireann (RTÉ). There are plentiful accounts of RTÉ, its programmes, personalities and the circuits of institutional power surrounding it. This is a history populated by political and clerical elites, and written by their cultural counterparts. Institutional crises surrounding RTÉ have been used as a proxy for the experiences of Irish people. With few alternatives, this perspective has underpinned common sense understandings of how …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Mindset, Attitudes Toward Affirmative Action, And Perceptions Of Diversity, Elizabeth Lee Smith May 2014

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Mindset, Attitudes Toward Affirmative Action, And Perceptions Of Diversity, Elizabeth Lee Smith

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This study investigates the relationship between mindset, multicultural experiences, attitudes toward affirmative action, knowledge of potential affirmative action components, value of diversity, and importance of diversity increasing initiatives. Undergraduate students (N = 384) were administered a web-based survey with measures for each of the aforementioned variables. Intelligence and personality mindset were hypothesized to be predictive of positive attitudes toward affirmative action, and greater value of diversity and diversity increasing initiatives at James Madison University (JMU). Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that more accurate knowledge about affirmative action and more multicultural experiences predicted significant variance in attitudes toward affirmative action. Higher …

Challenges To Community Reintegration For Those Convicted Of A Felony In Harrisonburg, Virginia, Sarah Elizabeth Stack May 2014

Challenges To Community Reintegration For Those Convicted Of A Felony In Harrisonburg, Virginia, Sarah Elizabeth Stack

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The topic of felon disenfranchisement and discrimination is a contentious one in the United States. Some individuals and legislators feel that people who commit felonies deserve the punishments they receive even after released. Whereas, others feel that felons should eventually be fully reintegrated back into society, once they serve their time. States have different policies and programs concerning felons, including reintegration programs. The purpose of this research project is to understand how the city of Harrisonburg, Virginia treats people with felonies in all aspects of their lives as they reintegrate back to society. The research question guiding the project was …

Social And Cultural Capitol In Formal One-On-One Mentoring Relationships, Madeleine Emily Hines May 2014

Social And Cultural Capitol In Formal One-On-One Mentoring Relationships, Madeleine Emily Hines

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

In recent years, formal mentorship programs for at-risk youth have grown increasingly in the United States. I investigate the ways in which mentoring models in these programs do or do not address the need to transmit social capital and cultural capital to the youth that they serve. Through observations of mentor- mentee matches, semistructured interviews of mentors and organizational staff, and data collection at two nonprofit organizations with formal mentoring components, this paper explores the ways in which these programs unknowingly set goals to transfer social and cultural capital to their mentees, and how mentors attain these goals.

The Haitian Immigrant Experience In The Shenandoah Valley, Kelli Renee Williams May 2014

The Haitian Immigrant Experience In The Shenandoah Valley, Kelli Renee Williams

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The following study provides a presentation on how immigrants of the Haitian Diaspora construct their social selves and what they believe constitutes a positive social self within the context of the American South. In asking how these immigrants present themselves and their connection to their country of origin, this study contributes to existing literature on the presentation of self, transnationalism, minority relations, and immigration in the American South. Their identities are also constructed in association with socio-historic-race relations and prejudices long established in the Southern United States. This prompts these individuals to produce accounts that are designed to confront these …

Mental Environmentalism: The True Goal Of The Occupy Wall Street Movement, Jay Menees

Senior Theses

The purpose of this paper is to expose the actual goal behind the Occupy Wall Street Movement. The paper discusses the criticism behind the Occupy Wall Street movement for its apparent lack of goals. It then takes a retrospective look back to the establishment and founding organization, Adbusters, for answers on a “one demand” or goal. From here it will discuss the founding body, Adbusters, and its philosophical and political ideology. After this, the paper will tie facets of the Occupy Wall Street movement back to Adbusters and their philosophy of mental environmentalism in order to show that mental environmentalism …

Does Being An Only Child Affect The Attitudes Of Chinese Students?, Yuwei Wei May 2014

Does Being An Only Child Affect The Attitudes Of Chinese Students?, Yuwei Wei

Senior Theses

Three decades has passed since China started implementing regulations and policies for population control. Today, the ever-famous “One-Child Policy” is starting to not only lose its popularity, but also its effectiveness in spurring economic growth. This paper will discuss the heavy social cost the last generation had to pay for the growth of economy and the slowing down of population growth, as well as the challenges in social adaptation young adults face today. As part of the literature review, this paper examines the issue of the “Upside down pyramid” and analyzes the family planning policy’s impact on China’s demography. The …

Love And Marriage: Domestic Relations And Matrimonial Strategies Among The Enslaved In The Atlantic World, Tyler Dunsdon Parry May 2014

Love And Marriage: Domestic Relations And Matrimonial Strategies Among The Enslaved In The Atlantic World, Tyler Dunsdon Parry

Theses and Dissertations

"Love and Marriage: Domestic Relations and Matrimonial Strategies Among the Enslaved in the Atlantic World" argues that the cultural and sociopolitical dimensions of slave marriage were primary issues for diasporic Africans, abolitionists, and proslavery apologists whose lives were intertwined by the cultural and economic connections that framed the Atlantic World throughout the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. Through analyzing the interplay between legislation, cultural practice, and political discourse in the early periods of colonial slavery, I first show how matrimonial patterns from Atlantic Africa and Britain were re-imagined by diasporic Africans enslaved in Bermuda, the British West Indies, and colonial …

Labeling And Framing Of Human Trafficking Victimhood, Elizabeth Regina Ramirez Kemp May 2014

Labeling And Framing Of Human Trafficking Victimhood, Elizabeth Regina Ramirez Kemp

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Victims and victimhood are socially constructed concepts that are given meaning through interaction. Human trafficking victims face labels that are interpreted through a variety of frames due to the complex nature of discourses surrounding human trafficking. Based on 304 hours of participant observation and 10 semi-structured interviews with service providers, law enforcement, and survivors of human trafficking I first seek to identify the ways service providers and law enforcement officials use labels and neutralization techniques to support an overall frame of human trafficking as an issue of human rights. Second, I analyze how their efforts to neutralize the label of …

Conflict On The Mesa: Assessing Defensibility Of Plaza-Oriented Villages In The Salinas Pueblo Province, New Mexico, Daniel Mark Sumner May 2014

Conflict On The Mesa: Assessing Defensibility Of Plaza-Oriented Villages In The Salinas Pueblo Province, New Mexico, Daniel Mark Sumner

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

Previous archaeological investigations of plaza-oriented villages in the Salinas Pueblo Province investigated the reasons people may have aggregated in these larger towns. The threat of warfare and the need for defense is one possible explanation for the construction of plaza-oriented villages, whose layout is seemingly intended to limit access. This thesis further assesses the defensibility of these sites using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The use of a GIS approach offers an opportunity to evaluate the potential for line-of-sight communications and inter-visibility between the plaza pueblo villages on Chupadera Mesa, factors which influenced their ability to signal allies and anticipate attack. …

The Effects Of Extracurricular Activity On Children And Adolescents: Hosting A Tennis Camp For Children In The Foster Care System, Lauren Armstrong

Senior Theses

In recent years, many studies have been conducted regarding the positive effects of extracurricular activities on the behaviors, actions, and overall well-being of children and adolescents. Whether it is through sports, hobbies, or activities within the community, it is important for all children to be able to have access to and be involved in some kind of extracurricular activities. Participation in activities such as these instills in children the qualities essential for life long success including good work ethic, time management skills, the ability to work in groups, commitment, and focus all while guiding them along the right path as …

Is Retention Enough? Learning And Satisfaction Of First-Generation College Seniors, David Mahan, Kristin B. Wilson, Joseph M. Petrosko Jr., Michael R. Luthy May 2014

Is Retention Enough? Learning And Satisfaction Of First-Generation College Seniors, David Mahan, Kristin B. Wilson, Joseph M. Petrosko Jr., Michael R. Luthy

Kentucky Journal of Higher Education Policy and Practice

Progress has been made in retaining and graduating traditional-age first-generation college students at four-year institutions. First-generation students, however, often experience college differently because of external factors, which can negatively influence their learning experience and overall satisfaction. This study explored learning and satisfaction measures of seniors at a small private university in the Midwest. Using Astin’s I-E-O model (1970), the following variables were considered: precollege student characteristics (input); academic engagement, co-curricular activities, campus relationships (environment); and satisfaction, learning (outcome). The sample consisted of seniors participating in NSSE and/or ETS MAPP (n=342). Findings confirmed that first-generation students typically worked more for pay, …
