Life On Two Continents: Understanding Different Roles Of Chinese Grandparents Who Have Grandchildren Born In The U.S., Tianyu Qiao, N/A 乔天钰

Communication

The present research explored the roles Chinese grandparents play regarding their grandchildren born in the United States. Due to the differences in language, cultures and family values in China and the U.S., these Chinese grandparents balance their lives between two continents and experience possible disconnect in communication with their U.S.-born grandchildren. In order to understand the lived experiences of these Chinese grandparents and to develop co-constructed meaning of their intercultural interactions, this research employs qualitative narrative analysis as the primary method. Eight conversational interviews were conducted and four emergent themes were discussed. This research shows that Chinese grandparents do encounter …

The Reconstructed Self: Understanding The Private And Public Identity Of A Mother Of A Child With Autism, Danielle Rene'e Tessen

Communication

The puzzle pattern of the autism awareness ribbon signifies the mystery of life on the spectrum. The spectrum is characterized by the wide range of possible diagnoses of autism. One family out of every 68 is affected by autism. Each shape and color of the puzzle illustrates the diversity of experience for each family and person living with autism. Therefore, the people living the everyday life of autism provide an insightful understanding of how the puzzle pieces fit together. The central focus of this research was the lived experience of the interviewees. Nine mothers of children diagnosed with autism were …

Experiences With Pregnancy Of Adolescents With Disabilities From The Perspectives Of The School Social Workers Who Serve Them, Kristen Faye Linton, Heidi Adams Rueda May 2014

Experiences With Pregnancy Of Adolescents With Disabilities From The Perspectives Of The School Social Workers Who Serve Them, Kristen Faye Linton, Heidi Adams Rueda

Social Work Faculty Publications

Adolescents with disabilities are more likely than adolescents without disabilities to become pregnant, although very little is known about the lived contexts of their sexual and pregnancy experiences. Such youths are often deprived of sexual health information across a range of potential sources, although school social workers are in a unique position to provide them services. Thirteen school social workers working primarily with adolescents with disabilities were interviewed using a phenomenological study design to offer their perspectives concerning the sexual and pregnancy experiences of such youths. Inductive content analysis revealed that school social workers provided services for pregnant and parenting …

Queering The Freeways: Deconstructing Landscape And The Potential In Spaces Of Destabilization, Anna R. Aqua May 2014

Queering The Freeways: Deconstructing Landscape And The Potential In Spaces Of Destabilization, Anna R. Aqua

Scripps Senior Theses

Abstract

This paper begins by introducing the concepts of urban anthropology and poststructuralism that lay a basis for my project and referencing some of the themes that will be explored in further chapters. Chapter I analyzes conceptualizations of Los Angeles in terms of center and edge, and discusses the ways in which Greater Los Angeles can be an interesting site in terms of queer possibilities of built spaces. In Chapter II the focus shifts to Los Angeles freeways, distinguishing them as in-between spaces of the built landscape and examining how they have been conceptualized by prominent scholars and artists. Chapter …

Use Of Tlingit Art And Identity By Non-Tlingit People In Sitka, Alaska, David Kreiss-Tomkins May 2014

Use Of Tlingit Art And Identity By Non-Tlingit People In Sitka, Alaska, David Kreiss-Tomkins

Arctic and Northern Studies

Tlingit culture, as with many Indigenous cultures that exist under colonial rule, is often described as being in danger of disappearing. Despite this, the appropriation of and subsequent use of cultural practices by non-Tlingit people, and especially white people, is a continuation of the process of colonization when it is enacted in a manner that is not critical of current and historical racism, capitalist pressures and colonial violence. This project addresses the topic through recorded conversations with seven Tlingit women in Sitka, Alaska in an attempt to place Tlingit cultural production and use in the broader contexts of Indigenous cultural …

Comparing The Reproductive Climates Of Japan, Norway And Italy: A New Way Of Looking At The Reasons For Low Fertility Rates, Samantha Graham May 2014

Comparing The Reproductive Climates Of Japan, Norway And Italy: A New Way Of Looking At The Reasons For Low Fertility Rates, Samantha Graham

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

In recent years, much has been made of the looming demographic crisis that is forming in Japan. The declining birthrate and graying of the population has made many government officials, sociologists, and scholars very anxious about what will happen when a nation begins to shrink. These same officials and scholars are also looking for a reason for the decline, and many have placed the blame on Japanese women without examining the reasons these women have for having fewer children or forgoing motherhood altogether. But Japan is not the only nation suffering from population decline. Other smaller, industrialized nations also face …

The Effects Of An After-School Program: Changing Academic Performance And Promoting Success, Leigh Ann Hailey May 2014

The Effects Of An After-School Program: Changing Academic Performance And Promoting Success, Leigh Ann Hailey

Theses and Dissertations

Since the enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, students who failed to demonstrate proficiency on state assessments were identified and targeted in order to receive interventions to assist in increasing their academic achievement. For many students, time during the regular school day simply could not be provided for the attention or time on-task necessary to meet their needs. As a result, many school districts and schools implemented after-school and tutoring programs to target those students who failed to demonstrate proficiency. Louisville Municipal School District (LMSD) operated an after-school program to help increase the academic achievement of …

The Social And Political Resiliency Of Communities And Implications For Disaster Policy: A Case Study Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Tonya Thornton-Neaves May 2014

The Social And Political Resiliency Of Communities And Implications For Disaster Policy: A Case Study Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Tonya Thornton-Neaves

Theses and Dissertations

Societal risks to disasters are continually increasing and the scope of policy issues surrounding emergency management in the United States remains inundated with a number of challenges. Examining the connection between social capital and political trust is paramount as prior studies have documented that if communal networks are disrupted, there will be a lasting negative impact upon the community. As such, there are specific events that cause added strain which make certain time periods for examining levels of resiliency relevant. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred on April 20, 2010, represents a large-scale, technological disaster. Not only was there …

The Crucifixion Of Marriage Equality: Analyses Of Protestant Christian Subcultures, Ethan C. Stokes May 2014

The Crucifixion Of Marriage Equality: Analyses Of Protestant Christian Subcultures, Ethan C. Stokes

Theses and Dissertations

This project is a study of how various Protestant Christian subcultures construct their identity and perceptions of LGBT couples in the 21st century United States sociopolitical context. Through an extensive content analysis of 105 sermon transcripts from www.sermoncentral.com, this project allows for a more accurate interpretation of Protestant Christian subgroups’ (via individual perceptions of pastors through their sermon rhetoric) stances on the issues of gay rights in the modern United States. Additionally, I use 2012 GSS survey data as background findings to frame and illustrate the relevance of the results from the content analysis. The content analysis findings show that …

Livelihood Strategies And Lifestyle Choices Of Fishers Along The Mississippi Gulf Coast, Sarah A. Harrison

Theses and Dissertations

This study was initiated to assess the biological, ecological and sociological aspects of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, fishery associated with the Pascagoula River Estuary in southern Mississippi. Household surveys were conducted in the cities of Moss Point and Pascagoula, Mississippi, September 2010 to September 2011, to identify, describe and classify subsistence fishing activities associated with the estuary. A stock assessment of blue crab was conducted to determine how biological and environmental variability affect the people engaged in this subsistence fishery. The study revealed two types of subsistence fishing occurring in the Moss Point/Pascagoula area. The first type involves fishing …

Got Shame?, Scott Alden Mathers

Theses and Dissertations

This secondary analysis represents a cross-sectional quantitative test of Reintegrative Shaming Theory (Braithwaite 1989) on inmates in the Mississippi Department of Corrections. The sample consists of 726 questionnaires split evenly between male and female respondents. The questionnaire includes measures central to Braithwaite’s theory (1989) as well as modifications that address the particular experiences of inmates including the frequency and communication with family, participation in prison programming, child-parent attachment, and moral conscience. Twenty Nine hypotheses incorporated in three analytical frameworks correspond to the following research questions: (1) Do indicators of interdependency predict shame and do the same indicators of interdependency predict …

Slut Pride: The Reappropriation Attempt By Slutwalk, Siena C. Noe May 2014

Slut Pride: The Reappropriation Attempt By Slutwalk, Siena C. Noe

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

This study examines an open letter created by the Black Women’s Blueprint Organization in response to the reappropriation of the term “slut” in SlutWalk Toronto, a protest march against rape culture. Using Kenneth Burke’s cluster criticism method, it evaluates the effectiveness of this rhetorical strategy through the lenses of race, ethnicity, and socio-economic differences. This study enables those involved in the movement to move forward productively, more inclusively. The research question addressed is as follows, the latter acting as a sub-question of the first: (1) In regards to United States Third Wave feminist goals, are SlutWalks achieving the desired long …

Effect Of Social Disruption On Sense Of National Identity, Angelina P. Nilssen May 2014

Effect Of Social Disruption On Sense Of National Identity, Angelina P. Nilssen

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

The concept of national identity is prevalent in contemporary debate as it is constantly being challenged due to factors such as immigration, globalization, and significant social transformation. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of social disruption, or societal collapse, on sense of national identity. Societal collapse raises many fundamental questions of sociological concern. Specifically, what are the consequences of structural breakdown in a society? Also, do individuals’ identities become compromised in the process of such social disruption? To address these questions, surveys were conducted with individuals in Russia. I argue that, with the establishment of the …

Declining Gayborhood Or Homonormative Playground In The Making? South Beach Reinvented., Kai Kenttamaa Squires

Open Access Theses

In this study I investigate the “decline” of the South Beach neighborhood of Miami Beach, Florida as a gayborhood (an urban clustering of LGBT residents and businesses) since the 1990s. I also place this case study within a larger context of a global gay village decline (defined as the loss of gay businesses and residents) by evaluating theoretical models and arguments over the roles of gentrification, technology and generational cultural shifts in said decline. Necessarily, this includes a discussion of homonormativity, particularly in regards to tourism promotion and entrepreneurialism versus the needs and desires of the local LGBT community which …

Reused Refuse: Freeganism And The Shifting Hegemonies Of Consumption And Waste, Jamie Corliss May 2014

Reused Refuse: Freeganism And The Shifting Hegemonies Of Consumption And Waste, Jamie Corliss

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

Freeganism is a counter-culture practice, lifestyle, and philosophy that resists the waste and exploitation inherent to capitalism. By examining freegan practices and philosophies, specifically dumpster diving, this project reveals how these actions help make apparent and shift dominant ideologies about waste and consumption by re-injecting value into wasted items. The project argues that the waste that freegans live on has the semiotic power to shift dominant attitudes about waste and gives freegans the means to survive with limited participation in the economy, but this waste is a byproduct of capitalist production, not a cause of it. Freegans are conceptually paving …

Where's Jonesville? How The Destruction Of Jonesville Left A Legacy Of Housing Discrimination In Bowling Green, Ky, George Carpenter May 2014

Where's Jonesville? How The Destruction Of Jonesville Left A Legacy Of Housing Discrimination In Bowling Green, Ky, George Carpenter

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Jonesville was a small tight-knit African-American community in Bowling Green, Kentucky with a unique cultural identity. Family-oriented and extremely self-sufficient, Jonesville thrived as a prime example of southern black culture in the mid 20th century. However, Jonesville did not stand a chance placed against a powerful local institution. In the late 1950s and early 1960s the community was destroyed to create space for an expanding Western Kentucky University. Fueled by the entirely unjust urban renewal legislation, Kentucky Project R-31, Jonesville was wiped from the Bowling Green map. Due to locally sanctioned discriminatory action, the displaced citizens of Jonesville were …

Lawrence And Desegregation In Bowling Green, Robert Rabold May 2014

Lawrence And Desegregation In Bowling Green, Robert Rabold

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

To gain a deeper understanding of the historical context and development of the Civil Rights Movement nationwide, this project analyzes the desegregation of the City of Bowling Green, Kentucky. Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas declared segregation deprived minority groups of equality in 1954, and the first implementation of the ruling in the United States followed with Willis v. Walker out of Adair County, Kentucky in 1955. The desegregation of Bowling Green schools, however, did not come until 1963 with Willie Larry Lawrence, et al. v. Bowling Green, Kentucky Board of Education et al.. The analyzation of relevant …

Take Off Your Masc: The Hegemonic Gay Male's Gender Performance On Grindr, Duncan Shuckerow May 2014

Take Off Your Masc: The Hegemonic Gay Male's Gender Performance On Grindr, Duncan Shuckerow

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

The hegemonic Grindr clone is a gay male Grindr user who enforces the privileging of traditional masculine gender performance and condemns effeminacy. Through this project’s own field work along with the website “douchebagsofgrindr,” the hegemonic Grindr clone is here within analyzed. Drawing upon the theory ofhegemony articulated by Gramsci, a historical analysis of the 1970s urban gay male clone, and contemporary analysis and research, the project argues that the hegemonic Grindr clones, while only a minority group of Grindr users, rules over the cyberspace as sexual gatekeepers. Hegemonic Grindr clones maintain their privileged status on the application through depicting and …

Emergencies: Risk And Personal Preparedness Measures, Charleen C. Mcneill May 2014

Emergencies: Risk And Personal Preparedness Measures, Charleen C. Mcneill

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Personal emergency preparedness efforts that increase the resiliency of individuals and communities and decrease the risk for poor outcomes after an emergency are increasingly of interest to health care leaders, policy makers, and governmental entities. The limited capacity for external aid to provide relief in the first 72 hours after an emergency dictates that individuals and communities become prepared to sustain themselves for this initial period. Failure to prepare for an emergency can result in a multitude of negative outcomes. Those who are economically vulnerable are particularly at risk, including a high risk for negative health outcomes. An initial review …

Patriotism Or Financial Stability--What Drives Young Men And Women To Join The United States Armed Forces, Hannah Brantley

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The purpose of this project is to determine why men and women continue to join the Armed Forces. I looked at different factors that may be associated with why people join the Armed Forces, and used an online survey to help determine what factor(s) had the most influence on the participants to join. This research focuses on patriotism and benefits. The benefits were then broken into different categories: education, healthcare, housing, and retirement. This research, if conducted on a much larger scale, theoretically could help the Armed Forces understand soldiers’ reasoning for joining so that they could put resources and …

The Influence Of Cultural And Social Capital On Post-Baccalaureate Students’ Decision To Enter And Complete Graduate School, Kelly L. Alig

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Despite increased diversity noted in undergraduate education in recent years (Antonio, 2003), students from non-majority groups continue to be underrepresented in graduate school. Many research studies (Perna, 2000, 2004; Perna & Titus, 2005; Rowan-Kenyon, 2007; Walpole, 2003, 2007b) have used measures of cultural and social capital to increase the explanatory power of the traditional econometric framework in college choice models, but have not used these sociological variables as a primary focus. The purpose of this correlational study was to explore the influence of cultural capital and social capital on the decision of bachelor’s degree completers to enter graduate school and …

Leadership And Communication As Opportunities For Growth: Refining Discipline With Cross Cultural Relationships Beyond The Classroom, Sabrina D. Sanchez

Master's Projects and Capstones

Overt disciplinary tactics disproportionately affect scholars of color. This field project aims to shed light on discipline policies across a variety of learning environments and provide scholars of color with the opportunity to self-advocate. I utilize a culturally relevant pedagogy in my framework component to stress the need for reciprocal relationships based on dignity and mutual respect. I provide effective alternative strategies, framed by culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) and Gregory and Mosely’s theory of culturally relevant discipline (CRD), for addressing misconduct that emphasize stronger communication and greater leadership opportunities. My project consists of three parts: a modified communications policy in …
