The Death And The Revival Of The Author, Hajdu Péter
The Death And The Revival Of The Author, Hajdu Péter
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The most influential trends in 20th-century literary criticism and theory of literature can be described as revolting against a both Romantic and positivist approach which focused on the person of the author rather than his or her literary product. Formalism, New Criticism, structuralism and post-structuralism denied any importance of the biographical author, and dealt with texts exclusively. After the Barthesian formulation of the death of the author (applauded by towering figures like Foucault or Derrida) the end of the 20th and even more the beginning of the 21st centuries have brought back the importance of the author. For some new …

Critically Reflexive Theory: A Proposal For Nursing Education, Jayne Josephsen
Critically Reflexive Theory: A Proposal For Nursing Education, Jayne Josephsen
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Nursing is a discipline in transition. As the complexity and acuity of patients increase, nurses are taking on a more comprehensive role in health care leadership and patient outcomes. As the discipline has evolved so has the curricular framework of nursing educational programs, moving from being based on a specific nursing theory, to a general metaparadigm, to the current focus on meeting curricular content standards developed by national accrediting agencies. When considering the skills needed to fully engage in critical thinking and patient advocacy there may be room for an additional curricular focus: that of metacognitive development based on critical …

Subjective Economic Insecurity In The United States: Perceived Precarity In The New Economy, Travis Lowe
Subjective Economic Insecurity In The United States: Perceived Precarity In The New Economy, Travis Lowe
Doctoral Dissertations
As the United States continues its transition into a postindustrial society, we are slowly moving away from the standard work arrangements that characterized the early post-World War II era towards less secure arrangements. Examining changes in workers’ perceptions of insecurity is important because these perceptions often condition their actions within the labor market. Recent events like the Great Recession also reflect a changing economic landscape and highlight the need for a closer look at workers’ perceived insecurity. In addition to using a social structure of accumulation (SSA) framework, this dissertation distinguishes three dimensions of subjective economic insecurity: perceived job precarity, …
Comparing Stigmatizing Attitudes Toward Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Traumatic Brain Injury, Jason Jacobs-Lentz
Comparing Stigmatizing Attitudes Toward Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Traumatic Brain Injury, Jason Jacobs-Lentz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The present study used an experimental design to compare stigmatizing attitudes toward a hypothetical target individual described, depending on condition, as having Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or no diagnostic label. Attributions for the diagnostic label varied across conditions as either biological or psychological in cause. Participants were queried about their attitudes toward the individual described in the vignette, and specific attitudes involving personal responsibility, pity, anger, fear, helping, and beliefs about coercion-segregation were examined. Based on modified labeling theory and attribution theory, we predicted that the highest levels of stigmatizing attitudes would be reported by participants …
Reading Nostalgia, Anger, And The Home In Joyce Carol Oates’S Foxfire, Heather A. Hillsburg
Reading Nostalgia, Anger, And The Home In Joyce Carol Oates’S Foxfire, Heather A. Hillsburg
Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies
This article draws from Svetlana Boym’s concept of reflective nostalgia to explore the intersections between violence, memory, and the home in Joyce Carol Oates’s novel Foxfire. Through reflective nostalgia, Maddy is able to link the abuse she and her friends endure to various iterations of the home. Reflective nostalgia also allows Maddy to draw connections between anger and the domestic realm, and to write the members of FOXFIRE back into dominant narratives that largely exclude their lived experiences. Ultimately, this paper argues that because nostalgia often centers on the home, it is ideally suited to foreground the untenable nature …
The Effect Of Economic And Social Conditions On The Use Of Clinical Preventive Services, Bisma Ali Sayed
The Effect Of Economic And Social Conditions On The Use Of Clinical Preventive Services, Bisma Ali Sayed
Open Access Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between economic conditions and individuals’ use of clinical preventive (CP) services. CP services form the cornerstone of the national healthcare agenda, and are key in the fight to reduce morbidity and mortality in the United States. Despite this, low utilization rates remain concerning, with recent statistics indicating that rates of CP service use fall well below the targets outlined in Healthy People 2020. In the present study, I focus on individuals’ use of three CP services, influenza vaccinations, blood cholesterol screening, and endoscopic colorectal cancer screening. Broadly, I examine the effect of state-level unemployment and …
Tolerance In The City: The Multilevel Effects Of Urban Environments On Permissive Attitudes, Christopher M. Huggins, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl
Tolerance In The City: The Multilevel Effects Of Urban Environments On Permissive Attitudes, Christopher M. Huggins, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl
Sociology Faculty Publications
Studies on urbanism often suggest a link between urbanites and increased tolerance. While most research supports this claim, it is hampered by several limitations: it focuses almost exclusively on the United States, it neglects classical arguments that urbanism is a macro-level as well as local phenomena, and it does not direct attention to the different mechanisms through which urbanism is believed to operate. In this paper, we reexamine the tolerance-producing capacity of urbanism by addressing these limitations. This study uses a large cross-national sample, multi-level modeling to examine urban factors at both the local and societal level, and two measures …

Peer Mentoring For-Profit College Students, Diane Mcgeehan
Peer Mentoring For-Profit College Students, Diane Mcgeehan
Theses and Dissertations
A peer mentoring program for new students at a for-profit institution was implemented at a campus over five quarters. Peer mentors with high GPAs were matched with students for eleven weeks to help with academic success. A Business Club was created to support the mentoring program and campus activities. A professor monitored the program and collected data about the mentors, mentees, and the program's initiatives. Qualitative and quantitative research practices were used. Most mentees completed their first quarter coursework and re-enrolled for multiple quarters. The peer mentors learned valuable skills that they will apply to their workplaces. The campus was …
Beyond The Mcnair Program: A Comparative Study Of Mcnair Scholars' Understandings Of The Impacts Of Program Participation On Their Graduate School Experiences, Cristina Restad
Dissertations and Theses
The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program is a U.S. Department of Education TRIO Program, funded at 152 institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico. In 2013, total funding reached over $35 million--of which, Portland State University received approximately $211,000 (US Department of Education, 2013). The program's goal is to introduce first-generation, low-income, under-represented group college students to effective strategies for succeeding in doctoral programs so they may become professors and create a more supportive environment for future non-traditional students. One way to explore program effectiveness beyond completion of the McNair Program is to ask the McNair Scholars themselves about …

A Social-Ecological Framework To Integrate Multiple Objectives For Environmental Flows Management, David M. Martin, Dylan Harrison-Atlas, Nicholas A. Sutfin, N. Leroy Poff
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
"Environmental flows" is a research discipline that emphasizes freshwater allocation in rivers to sustain desired ecological conditions and human well-being. The basis for environmental flow requirements has traditionally relied on hydrological and ecological data. Contemporary methods focus on detailed hydro-ecological relationships within river ecosystems; however, there is currently no structured approach to systematically incorporate socially relevant data into the environmental flows discipline. To address this limitation we developed a flexible framework that applies a social-ecological systems approach to account for multiple flow-related objectives that reflect both biophysical sustainability and societal preferences. First, we conceptualize the freshwater social-ecological system as a …

The purpose of this study was to examine how the changes in social studies teaching methods and content pedagogy have changed due to the increase in high-stakes testing in the area of secondary social studies. The primary questions addressed in this study were focused on teacher perceptions regarding high-stakes testing in social studies, and content pedagogy currently used in the social studies classroom. The participants in this study included 12 high school U.S. History teachers from 3 public schools. A phenomenological study was conducted to gather information related to the following research questions: (1) What are the perceptions of high …

Second Language Teacher Education: The Development Of Pre-Service Teacher Cognitions About The Characteristics And Practices Of Effective Esl Instructors, Kenneth Geoffrey Richter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
My dissertation explores the impact of second language teacher education on the development of the pedagogic beliefs held by student teachers enrolled in the University of Guanajuato’s Licenciatura en la Enseñanza de Inglés. Specifically, my research investigates the origins of these students’ pedagogic beliefs, the development of their beliefs over the course of the four-year language teacher program, and the convergence of their beliefs and professional practices. The current research can be described as a synchronic, exploratory-descriptive study based on a cross-sectional investigation of participant beliefs. Repertory grid interviews were used as the primary method of data collection. The repertory …

Cocaine Intravenous Self-Administration (Ivsa) In Adult Long-Evans Rats Perinatally Exposed To Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Mellessa Michelle Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are ubiquitous environmental toxins known to adversely impact human health. Ortho-substituted PCBs in particular are known to affect the nervous system and more specifically the brain dopaminergic system. Developmental PCB exposure in rats has been shown to produce alterations in the dopamine system that persists into adulthood. The reinforcing properties of psychostimulants are typically modulated via the dopaminergic system, so this project was conducted to evaluate whether perinatal PCB exposure would alter intravenous self-administration (IVSA) for the psychostimulant cocaine. Long Evans rats were perinatally exposed to 6 mg/kg/day or 3 mg/kg/day of PCBs throughout gestation and lactation …
Life Satisfaction, Social Identity, And Household Work: An Intersectionality Perspective, Adriane Maria Fertitta Sanders
Life Satisfaction, Social Identity, And Household Work: An Intersectionality Perspective, Adriane Maria Fertitta Sanders
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The aim of the current study was to extend the understanding of life satisfaction by incorporating intersectionality and household work, both logical and necessary additions that have been previously overlooked in the satisfaction literature. Findings suggest that intersectionality may help provide a more detailed understanding of overall life satisfaction. When other relevant psychological constructs were accounted for, the intersections among gender, income, and household work hours provided additional (although modest) predictive power for differences in life satisfaction. The current study addresses the call for increased intersectional research in the behavioral sciences with acceptable generalizability through the use of a nationally …

Processing Government Data: Zip Codes, Python, And Openrefine, Frank Donnelly
Publications and Research
While there is a vast amount of useful US government data on the web, some of it is in a raw state that is not readily accessible to the average user. Data librarians can improve accessibility and usability for their patrons by processing data to create subsets of local interest and by appending geographic identifiers to help users select and aggregate data. This case study illustrates how census geography crosswalks, Python, and OpenRefine were used to create spreadsheets of non-profit organizations in New York City from the IRS Tax-Exempt Organization Masterfile. This paper illustrates the utility of Python for data …

Introduction: Appreciating Difference, Barbara Lewis
Trotter Review
Are we a narrative nation, imagined and connected mentally, tied by a common history of disruption if not by contiguous geography? Lorick-Wilmot suggests that the stories we tell offer the basis of mutual understanding across distance and cultures and generations. In a reconfigured mental Diasporic cartography, where is our citadel, our castle (not to be confused with what Europeans named as slave castles of Africa)? The remains and monuments built in this hemisphere by iron will and the drive to change yesterday, uprooting it from the ground of inequality, still stand on the highest hill in northern Haiti, reminding us …
Between Two Worlds: Stories Of The Second-Generation Black Caribbean Immigrant, Yndia S. Lorick-Wilmot
Between Two Worlds: Stories Of The Second-Generation Black Caribbean Immigrant, Yndia S. Lorick-Wilmot
Trotter Review
People have an endless fascination with character information since it helps us to predict the behavior of those we interact with (King, Rumbaugh, and Savage-Rumbaugh 1999). Stories or narratives serve as an extension of this fascination. They help us make better decisions even without supplying immediate information. When we each talk about the past, our stories not only disclose currently relevant social particulars, but also provide tools for reasoning about action—our own and others’. In many instances, the stories we tell offer explanations of an outcome that resulted when we acted upon something—or serve as indirect memories of a place …
Recent African Immigrants’ Fatherhood Experiences In America: The Changing Role Of Fathers, Zacharia N. Nchinda
Recent African Immigrants’ Fatherhood Experiences In America: The Changing Role Of Fathers, Zacharia N. Nchinda
Trotter Review
This article examines the lived experiences of recent African immigrant fathers in the United States. It focuses specifically on recent African immigrant fathers with African women as wives and children below the age of 18. Its aim is a better understanding of these fathers’ involvement in the life of their children and the changes immigration has forced upon the fathers. Information for the study emanates from interviews carried out with African immigrant fathers in the Milwaukee area, supplemented by my knowledge of African immigrant communities. The categorization of the data uses a construct established by the mid-1990s DADS Project initiative …

Black Is Decidedly Not Just Black: A Case Study On Hiv Among African-Born Populations Living In Massachusetts, Chioma Nnaji, Nzinga Metzger
Trotter Review
Black or African American is a racial category that includes the descendants of enslaved Africans as well as members of foreign-born black communities who migrated to the United States from places abroad, such as Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Grouping native-born and foreign-born blacks into a single homogeneous racial category may make it easier to track disease and health outcomes; however, it masks the different cultural experiences, histories, languages, social and moral values, and expectations that influence health beliefs, attitudes, practices, and behaviors. It also ignores such factors as migration, which forces foreign-born populations to examine both their traditional …

The Somali Diaspora In Greater Boston, Paul R. Camacho, Abdi Dirshe, Mohamoud Hiray, Mohamed J. Farah
Trotter Review
Our nation was founded on and thrives on immigration. One of the newest immigrant groups in the Boston area are Somalis. They are among the largest of the new populations of African immigrants. While precise numbers are very difficult to determine, there are approximately 8,000 in the Greater Boston area and another 2,000 estimated across the rest of Massachusetts. Very few studies have examined Somalis in the United States, and no studies exist on the community in Boston or Massachusetts.
It is an interesting sociological question to ask how similar the Somali experience has been in the United States (and …

The sun sat high in the cloudless, early summer sky. Jerry held his breath as Ryan punched the gas, jumping onto Route 3 a few feet ahead of an incoming tractor-trailer. Ryan laughed as the angry truck driver blasted his air horn at them as the ’79 Aspen rocketed up the highway. The ramp onto Route 3 didn’t leave much room for traffic to merge; leaving the brave to shoot out onto the highway and the timid to sit and wait for an opening, often to the angry blaring of horns behind them, pushing them to jump onto the highway. …

Panoply: Haitian And Haitian-American Youth Crafting Identities In U.S. Schools, Fabienne Doucet
Trotter Review
In the United States, where race is a powerful factor for social stratification (Appiah & Gutmann, 1998; Glick-Schiller & Fouron, 1990a; Omni & Winant, 1986), foreign-born Blacks find themselves battling the demoralizing impacts of discrimination, racism, and xenophobia on a daily basis. In the school context, racist assumptions have been shown to predispose teachers to have lower expectations of immigrant students and other students of color, to view them more often as behavioral problems, and to assume that their parents do not value education (Doucet, 2008, 2011b; Suárez-Orozco, Suárez-Orozco, & Todorova, 2008). At the same time, the powerful influence of …
