Forest and Society

Peatlands in Mantangai District, Central Kalimantan, have emerged as a site of contention among many stakeholders with differing interests, illustrating the intricacies of natural resource management in Indonesia. This research seeks to examine the contestation process, identify main actors, and comprehend how various forms of knowledge and power influence the results of peatland management. This research employs a case study method with a qualitative approach, incorporating direct observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis to achieve a thorough knowledge of the dynamics of contestation. The findings indicate three primary viewpoints in peatland management: eco-conservationism exemplified by Mawas Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation …

Social Forestry As Solution To Agrarian Conflicts? A Case Study Between Oil Palm Smallholders And Industrial Plantations In Jambi, Indonesia, Muhammad Reza Halomoan, Arya Hadi Dharmawan, Satyawan Sunito Jul 2025

Social Forestry As Solution To Agrarian Conflicts? A Case Study Between Oil Palm Smallholders And Industrial Plantations In Jambi, Indonesia, Muhammad Reza Halomoan, Arya Hadi Dharmawan, Satyawan Sunito

Forest and Society

Extraction activities across Indonesia have caused drastic changes to forest ecologies. The Indonesian government responded to this through a policy of Industrial Plantation Forest concessions, which were given to the private sector in the hopes of overcoming damages from forest extraction activities while at the same time utilizing unproductive forest land. However, this policy does not pay attention to the existence of people who de facto control and use the land and has triggered new conflicts around agrarian claims based on different interpretations of land rights. In an effort to resolve conflicts, the government has implemented a community-based forest area …

Constructing Victims And Perpetrators: A Textual Analysis Of Media Discourses On Sexual Violence, Farah Ali

Global Language Studies Faculty publications

Sexual violence has become increasingly visible in the public eye, which has in turn prompted scholarly research across disciplines to critically examine how such cases are handled, ranging from the investigation processes to how the accused and accusing parties are impacted. Linguistic research in particular has made an important contribution to our understanding of the role of language in interpreting and evaluating sexual violence by focusing on the narrations of specific cases. Yet linguistic perspectives are somewhat sparse with regard to mass media discourse, which can play an influential role in shaping discussions on sexual violence. This study examines discourse …

Nongovernmental Organizations In The Design And Implementation Of Social Forestry Programs In Indonesia: Interests, Power And Strategies, Arsad Ragandhi, Agus Heruanto Hadna, Setiadi Setiadi, Ahmad Maryudi Jul 2025

Nongovernmental Organizations In The Design And Implementation Of Social Forestry Programs In Indonesia: Interests, Power And Strategies, Arsad Ragandhi, Agus Heruanto Hadna, Setiadi Setiadi, Ahmad Maryudi

Forest and Society

Many social forestry projects have failed to produce expected outcomes. In many cases, they do not suit specific local contexts, problems, and needs because they only articulate the interests of powerful actors outside local communities. In this study, we examine how nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) affect social forestry implementation. In many cases, NGOs are characterized as benevolent actors, often claiming to represent voiceless groups, including poor local communities, in the social forestry context. We are specifically interested in analyzing the ways by which the studied NGOs have shaped the implementation of social forestry models in the forests managed by the state …

The Enduring Relevance Of The Right To Strike: Arguments For Further Legal Protection And Regulatory Reform, Tonia Novitz, Katherine Fitzpatrick, Jeffrey Vogt Jul 2025

The Enduring Relevance Of The Right To Strike: Arguments For Further Legal Protection And Regulatory Reform, Tonia Novitz, Katherine Fitzpatrick, Jeffrey Vogt

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

In this thematic issue, the contributors demonstrate the past and contemporary relevance of a right to strike. Some authors do so with reference to the long-standing role that such an entitlement plays in protecting dignity, democracy, and other vital public interests. Attention is also paid to emerging contemporary issues, whereby the right to strike offers important leverage that would otherwise be absent, for example countering abusive treatment of those at work in global supply chain practices and the environmental degradation of the planet. They all conclude that, while it is possible to utilise existing legal protections of a right to …

Strikes And The Struggle For Democracy, Angela B. Cornell, Ruth Dukes Jul 2025

Strikes And The Struggle For Democracy, Angela B. Cornell, Ruth Dukes

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

The right to strike is fundamental to the development and maintenance of democratic forms of government. In struggles to construct and defend democratic regimes, strikes, including general strikes, are often an important weapon. In established democracies, the right to strike can aid the spread of democratic decision-making in workplaces and the wider economy, serving indirectly to strengthen participation and confidence in political processes and institutions. And it can underpin systems of collective bargaining that function to narrow income and wealth inequalities, in a manner that is conducive, if not necessary, to the maintenance of democratic government. Wherever the right to …

Dignity And The Right To Strike, Sergio Gamonal C Jul 2025

Dignity And The Right To Strike, Sergio Gamonal C

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

“Dignity” expresses the idea that a human being should never be treated as a means but always as an end. “Dignity” also encompasses a communitarian and relational approach, such as belonging, collective action and “dignity in action”. When we recognize and seek to remedy indignities, we also confer a certain dignity on ourselves. How can these notions be linked to the right to strike? I shall argue that the right to strike underpins the dignity of workers and that this connection is implicit in Advisory Opinion OC-27/21 of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. In national and international courts, such …

Balancing The Right To Strike And Other Public Interests: The Importance Of The Status Of The Right To Strike, Petra Herzfeld Olsson, Shae Mccrystal Jul 2025

Balancing The Right To Strike And Other Public Interests: The Importance Of The Status Of The Right To Strike, Petra Herzfeld Olsson, Shae Mccrystal

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

The regulation of strike action involves the balancing of competing public interests – the benefits derived from collective bargaining and the right to strike and others including public safety, health, welfare, and industrial peace. We explore how this balancing act plays out in the legal systems of two national jurisdictions, Australia and Sweden, and through the ILO principles on freedom of association as developed by the ILO’s supervisory bodies. We seek to understand how different regulatory approaches to these competing public interests produces different outcomes and the potential consequences where protecting other public interests is prioritised over the right to …

Labour Against The Law? Contesting The Restrictive Norms Of Industrial Legality Through Unlawful Strikes, Eric Tucker Jul 2025

Labour Against The Law? Contesting The Restrictive Norms Of Industrial Legality Through Unlawful Strikes, Eric Tucker

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

North American regimes of industrial legality provide workers with protected rights to organize, bargain collectively, and strike. However, they also limit the freedom to strike. Trade unions commonly accept and enforce these limits but at great cost to solidarity and militancy. This article examines the many ways law works against labour by restricting the freedom to strike and explores the practice of unlawful strikes in North America, including recent examples that resulted in successful outcomes. It concludes with reflections on the revival of unlawful strikes as a tactic for rebuilding and remobilizing the North American labour movement. While the article’s …

Strike Law And Workers’ Power Resources In Global Supply Chains And Platform Giants, Judy Fudge, Hila Shamir Jul 2025

Strike Law And Workers’ Power Resources In Global Supply Chains And Platform Giants, Judy Fudge, Hila Shamir

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

The right to strike is a key feature of freedom of association and effective collective bargaining. We consider how the legal regulation of strikes and boycotts affects the power resources available to workers and unions to improve working conditions and workers’ voice in firms, such as global supply chains and platform giants, that utilize network-of-contracts business models. We begin by bringing the literatures on power resources theory and supply chain and platform capitalism into conversation. Treating law as a form of institutional power influencing workers’ ability to exercise other power resources in network-of-contracts business models, we then examine how the …

BACKGROUND: Communication among health care professionals is essential for effective clinical care. Asynchronous text-based clinician communication-secure messaging-is rapidly becoming the preferred mode of communication. The use of secure messaging platforms across health care institutions creates large-scale communication networks that can be used to characterize how interaction structures affect the behaviors and outcomes of network members. However, the understanding of the structure and interactions within these networks is relatively limited.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the characteristics of a large-scale secure messaging network and its association with health care professional messaging behaviors.

METHODS: Data on electronic health record-integrated secure messaging use from …

Values And Barriers: A Multidimensional View Of College Students’ Motivations To Volunteer, Gavin Warner, Quang Anh Nguyen, Ansuk Jeong Jul 2025

Values And Barriers: A Multidimensional View Of College Students’ Motivations To Volunteer, Gavin Warner, Quang Anh Nguyen, Ansuk Jeong

DePaul Discoveries

University students tend to have ample access to many resources for volunteering and so are in a unique position among Americans. With all the benefits of volunteering outlined in past research, the students training to become leaders in their fields may have the most to gain from volunteerism. It is surprising, then, to note that young people are less likely to volunteer than other age groups. Why is it that college students tend to volunteer at such low rates? The current study seeks to answer this question through a mixed-methods survey. A qualitative section clarified which specific barriers students felt …

The Role Of Maternal Attachment In The Relation Between Acculturative Stress And Mental Health Among Latinx Youth, Melisa Dangles, Evelin Regalado, Antonio Polo Jul 2025

The Role Of Maternal Attachment In The Relation Between Acculturative Stress And Mental Health Among Latinx Youth, Melisa Dangles, Evelin Regalado, Antonio Polo

DePaul Discoveries

Acculturative stress is a significant psychological challenge faced by Latinx youth as they navigate cultural adaptation, often leading to negative mental health outcomes. Research has shown that acculturative stress is positively associated with major depression, anxiety, and high-risk behaviors, including delinquency and impulse control problems (Lerias et al., 2024). This study examines the role of maternal attachment as a mediator in the relation between acculturative stress and both depressive symptoms and externalizing problems among Latinx youth. The sample consisted of 281 Latinx students (ages 10-14, M = 11.4, SD = 0.95) from several Chicago Public Schools. Results indicate that acculturative …

Examining The Relationship Between Acculturation Levels, Help-Seeking Attitudes, And Self-Stigma Perspectives Among International Students, Praveen K. Rudra

Counseling Faculty Publications

This study examined the relationship between acculturation level, help-seeking attitude, and self-stigma among international students enrolled in the graduate counseling program (ICS) within the United States. The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) served as the theoretical framework. Using the TPB construct in the context of mental health concerns, this study investigated the relationship between acculturation level, help-seeking attitude, and self-stigma. The data from ASSIS, IASMHS, and SSOSH were analyzed using the Pearson product moment correlation (Pearson r). It was found that the Pearson product-moment correlational analysis between the variables concluded a strong direct correlation between the acculturation level and the …

Double Entry Bookkeeping: Its Philosophical And Mathematical Underpinnings, Henry Zeno Chalu Jul 2025

Double Entry Bookkeeping: Its Philosophical And Mathematical Underpinnings, Henry Zeno Chalu

Business Management Review

This paper explores double entry bookkeeping as a theoretical and practical framework for the accounting discipline. Three foundational theoretical underpinnings for double entry bookkeeping are provided which constitute scientific and philosophical justification for the practice. These underpinnings consist of two philosophical stances and one mathematical position. In regard to the two philosophical stances, double entry bookkeeping is considered to be based on a figurative language perspective as well as a causality perspective. Regarding the mathematical position, the paper argues that double entry bookkeeping is grounded in an algebraic perspective specifically Pacioli group. The paper, hence, contributes to the understanding of …

Laying The Groundwork For Liberatory Expressive Arts Research: A Queer Review, Robyn E. Ginsberg Jul 2025

Laying The Groundwork For Liberatory Expressive Arts Research: A Queer Review, Robyn E. Ginsberg

Expressive Therapies Theses

The goal of this thesis was to reveal the interconnectedness of disparate discourse across diverse disciplines and locate it within one queer domain. The intersection of (expressive) art and (community/participatory) action is a space within which queer collaboration can take place. It is a space that can accommodate and energize non-normative idea generation and exchange which can mobilize queer resistance to create societal change (Fernández & Fine, 2024; Rutten, 2016). By engaging with interdisciplinary literature and situating conceptual frameworks in dialogue this review provides a foundation for liberatory expressive arts research (LExAR) and practice. Key themes include: centering queer and …

Youth violence—the deliberate use of physical force or harm by young people between the ages of 10 and 24 to intimidate or cause harm to others, both online and offline—is a critical public health issue in the United States. Yet, successfully predicting future violent offenders is a complex and challenging task, as the question of why some youths resort to extreme violence while others refrain from it—despite facing similar risk factors—remains widely debated. This article highlights both risk and protective factors of youth violence through a socio-ecological lens to offer a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted factors driving youth violence …

Parents Of Adolescents On Electronic Use And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Parental Perspectives, Sleep, Internalization, Jessica Wiepking

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

ADHD in adolescents is a common diagnosis, with exposure to daily electronic use. There is strong evidence for a relationship between electronic use and ADHD in adolescents. However, there is a gap on electronic use, internalized feelings, and sleep behaviors in ADHD adolescents and how sleep behaviors might impact that relationship. ADHD has its core symptoms that impact the individual daily. These symptoms need to be taken into consideration when looking at internalized feelings and sleep behavior patterns. The theoretical framework that aligns with this study is the Dopaminergic Dysregulation Theory (DDT). This theory is a module that suggests that …
