Spotting And Preventing Air Rage: Proactive Strategies For Pilots & Flight Attendants For Handling Unruly Passenger Behavior, Alan Saquella, Joe Frary

Publications

Unruly passenger behavior has become an increasingly common challenge for airline crews. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), more than 53,500 disruptive passenger incidents were reported globally in 2024, averaging one incident every 395 flights. In the U.S., the FAA recorded over 900 cases by mid-year, with more than 100 directly tied to intoxication. While the majority of flights operate without issue, the rise in verbal abuse, intimidation, and physical altercations is impacting both safety and morale in the skies.

Participant Empowerment, Inclusivity, And Social Justice: A Review Of Meng Tian’S Arts-Based Research Methods For Educational Researchers, Niway Ayalew Adimasu

The Qualitative Report

In reviewing Arts-Based Research Methods for Educational Researchers by Meng Tian (2023), I found a priceless resource for contemporary scholars wishing to add cutting-edge arts-based techniques to their qualitative research inquiries. This book offers a thorough examination of how artistic mediums like poetry, theater, and visual arts can be used to investigate the emotional, psychological, and cultural aspects of education that conventional research frequently ignores. It does this by fusing theoretical understanding with helpful advice. The book focuses on participant empowerment, inclusivity, and ethical considerations when working with vulnerable populations highlights the book’s commitment to social justice, making it especially …

Navigating The Employability Landscape: Unanswered Questions For International Students In Southeast Asia, Hengzhi Hu

Higher Learning Research Communications

As Southeast Asia becomes an increasingly popular destination for international students, important questions arise concerning the employability of graduates from this region. This comment article advocates for a comprehensive examination of how effectively Southeast Asian universities equip their international students to navigate both global and home country labor markets. Additionally, this article calls for a critical rethinking of the global recognition and value of qualifications obtained from Southeast Asian higher education providers, which often face challenges in being perceived as on par with those from more established educational hubs and underscores the necessity for comparative research to assess how the …

Navigating Uncertainty In Doctoral Education, Megan K. Mitchell, Audra Skukauskaitė, Lakelyn E. Taylor, Kathryn Babb, Nicole Narkiewicz, Joseph E. Lloyd

The Qualitative Report

The shift to more virtual learning during and since the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted in-person doctoral education by limiting opportunities for face-to-face academic socialization, networking, and collaborative learning, prompting questions about how graduate students could sustain their scholarly development through online spaces. This study examines how graduate students who joined the Qualitative Research Club, a virtual interdisciplinary student organization, co-constructed a shared academic culture, or languaculture, through their interactions. Using an Interactional Ethnographic approach, we analyzed video and audio recordings, meeting artifacts, and discourse from club meetings to trace members' participation, identity development, co-construction of knowledge, and development of …

A Culture Of Accountability Through Ethical Leadership Drives Citizenship Behavior In Ghana’S Traditional System Of Leadership, Eric Yeboah-Asiamah Jul 2025

A Culture Of Accountability Through Ethical Leadership Drives Citizenship Behavior In Ghana’S Traditional System Of Leadership, Eric Yeboah-Asiamah

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This study seeks to investigate the influence of accountability on the community citizenship behavior of followers in Ghana's traditional system of leadership with the mediating role of ethical leadership behavior. A cross-sectional survey design was used to obtain quantitative data from 319 Ghanaians through questionnaires. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.1.0.3 was utilized to test the study’s hypotheses. The results showed that accountability (ACC) was a significant predictor of ethical leadership behavior but had no direct effect on community citizenship behavior (CCB). Additionally, the relationship between ACC and CCB was partially mediated by ethical leadership behavior. …

Groundskeeping As A Theoretical Framework: Understanding The Experiences Of An Emerging Discipline-Based Education Researcher, Christian D. Solorio, Christopher A.F. Hass, Scott V. Franklin, Mary Bridget Kustusch, Eleanor C. Sayre

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Groundskeeping is a supportive leadership style that combines mentorship, institutional change, and leadership to support individuals at the intersection of their personal aspirations and an organization’s needs. This paper uses a theoretical framework of groundskeeping and applies it to the experiences of Robert, an Emerging Discipline-Based Education Researcher (EDBER) who wanted to do physics education research. In this instrumental case study, we explore how the environmental, human-centered, and anti-deficit philosophical principles of groundskeeping manifest in the interpersonal and structural supports that facilitated Robert’s transition into education research. We highlight how creating a new entry-point into Discipline-Based Education Research, providing professional …

If These Walls Could Talk: An Institutional Perspective On Values-Based Leadership, Arild Wæraas, Harald Askeland, Gry Espedal Jul 2025

If These Walls Could Talk: An Institutional Perspective On Values-Based Leadership, Arild Wæraas, Harald Askeland, Gry Espedal

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Scholars usually conceptualize values-based leadership (VBL) as a subset of transformational leadership. By contrast, we see VBL as a form of leadership in its own right, having theoretical roots in institutional theory. Building on recent Scandinavian contributions to VBL, we develop our argument by delineating VBL from transformational leadership and proposing a conceptualization of VBL that is consistent with Selznick’s theory of institutional leadership. Specifically, we see VBL as an approach that involves focused attention throughout the organization to desired practices and critical reflection on values, emphasizing the leader’s role as a facilitator of values work and protector of existing …

Washing Versus Shepherding: An Important Distinction, Phillip Johnson Jul 2025

Washing Versus Shepherding: An Important Distinction, Phillip Johnson

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

This article suggests a pragmatic, outcomes-driven approach to the ethical dilemmas faced by values-driven organizations when considering partnerships with entities that may not align with their principles. It examines the complexity of reconciling positive actions by "bad" actors, such as an oil giant investing in renewables or a controversial government addressing social issues. The article distinguishes between "washing"—reputation-laundering efforts driven by PR motives—and "shepherding", where organizations support initiatives that create substantive positive outcomes despite disapproving of the initiating entity.

While acknowledging the philosophical underpinnings of these dilemmas, the article advocates for an approach that prioritizes actions that demonstrably …

Censorship In The Media Jul 2025

Censorship In The Media

Communication Research Trends

The principle of freedom of expression in the press, book publishing and broadcasting has been one of the hard-won battles in human history. Without this freedom, a democratic society,, could not exist. Yet every community and nation has to make painful decisions about what will, or will not be communicated. Libel and privacy are obvious examples. Otherwise our societies would virtually disintegrate. Does freedom of speech have limits? If so, how do we decide on these limits?

New forms of censorship are always creeping in. Currently it is insinuated that consumer protection groups such as Action for Children's Television in …

Television's Influence On Cultures Jul 2025

Television's Influence On Cultures

Communication Research Trends

It is widely assumed by the public, broadcasters and some communication researchers that television has caused major shifts in contemporary world view and values. McLuhan introduced the notion that the form of the medium itself- the simultaneous sound and vision - has brought about a new intuitive, holistic pattern of thinking. For McLuhan, the generation gap is the product of a television generation. Gerbner sees television as the central cultural arm of American society. Like a religion, it is the chief source of repetitive and ritualised symbol systems cultivating the consciousness of mass publics.

Others think that the process is …

The Language Of Film And Television Jul 2025

The Language Of Film And Television

Communication Research Trends

An increasing number of people receive most of their news, entertainment and even religious inspiration through the visual media of film, television or illustrated magazines. We all "watch" television.James Monaco notes that some cats watch television attentively! But how well do we grasp the specific language of the visual media?

In countries such as the U.S., there is evidence that the post-1950 generation that has grown up with television has a pattern of thinking more attuned to the visual than to print media. Yet, some cross-cultural studies suggest that many American children, for all of the long hours of TV …

The Intersection Between Child Marriage And Climate Change: An Example Of Malawi, Musu Bakoto Sawo Jul 2025

The Intersection Between Child Marriage And Climate Change: An Example Of Malawi, Musu Bakoto Sawo

Journal of African Policy Studies

Child marriage affects 39,000 girls daily, totaling 650 million women married before age eighteen globally. While driven by poverty, tradition, and limited education, climate change is emerging as a significant new factor, particularly in developing nations such as Malawi, where 42% of girls marry before age eighteen. An estimated 1.5 million girls in Malawi are at risk due to climate-exacerbated food insecurity and displacement. This paper, using feminist theories of intersectionality, postcolonial feminism, and feminist political ecology, examines the complex link between climate change and child marriage in Malawi. It critiques existing international, regional, and domestic policies, highlighting their inadequacy …

African Feminist Theories And The Gendered Dimensions Of Climate Change In Africa, Manase Kudzai Chiweshe Jul 2025

African Feminist Theories And The Gendered Dimensions Of Climate Change In Africa, Manase Kudzai Chiweshe

Journal of African Policy Studies

This paper analyzes how African feminist theories can provide nuanced insights into the gendered dimensions of climate change across the continent. African feminist theories provide essential insights into the everyday lived experiences of women within African spaces, allowing for a contextual analysis of the impacts of climate change. There has also been a growing recognition of the need to identify the gender-differentiated impacts of climate change. The main argument is not only that climate change will be experienced by men and women differently but also that the impacts will hurt women more severely. Yet this theorization must employ theoretical lenses …

Technology And The Sustainable Implementation Of The African Continental Free Trade Area (Afcfta) Through Women’S Integration, Philip Ademola Olayoku Jul 2025

Technology And The Sustainable Implementation Of The African Continental Free Trade Area (Afcfta) Through Women’S Integration, Philip Ademola Olayoku

Journal of African Policy Studies

The desire for economic prosperity on the African continent led to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), in line with the vision of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), when it proposed the creation of an African Economic Community (AEC) by 2028. However, sustainable economic development will remain a mirage without inclusivity where no one is left behind, in line with the African Union’s Agenda 2063. This study explores the challenge of restricting women to economic margins in trade agreements under the AfCFTA and how this would undermine its implementation. It subsequently contends that women are integral to Africa’s …

District Impact On State-Wide Charter School Policy: Has Normandy Schools Collaborative Punctuated The Equilibrium? Charter School Policy Analysis Of The Missouri Department Of Elementary And Secondary Education, Tracey L. Cannon

Dissertations

Abstract

Punctuated Equilibrium Theory, as applied by Niles Eldredge and Stephen Jay Gould (1941-2002) to the study of species evolution, examined the infrequency of morphological change or stasis discontinuity.1 While groundbreaking in the field of Paleontology and the study of fossil change, the theory has been well-fitting to the decision sciences as introduced by Baumgartner and Jones2, in their 1993 and 2010 publications. Recognizing typical, incremental policy change, its use in this research looks at how stasis, stagnant policy can be punctuated by changes in political or societal views. This study examines the impact of heightened problem discussion for agenda …

The Criminal Record As A Death Sentence: Unmasking The Ignored Realities Of Formerly Incarcerated University Graduates On Professional Licencing Challenges, Mbongiseni Mdakane, Bongani Innocent Nkambule, Sindile Amina Ngubane Jul 2025

The Criminal Record As A Death Sentence: Unmasking The Ignored Realities Of Formerly Incarcerated University Graduates On Professional Licencing Challenges, Mbongiseni Mdakane, Bongani Innocent Nkambule, Sindile Amina Ngubane

Journal of Prison Education Research

Recently it is increasingly common practice for universities and professional registration councils to probe into applicants’ criminal records as a precondition for admission. Using social constructionism, this qualitative study explored the experiences of six formerly incarcerated individuals previously sentenced to life imprisonment, who hold professional university degrees in Law, Education, Psychology and Social Work and investigated whether having a criminal record had any bearing when applying for professional registration. The results indicate that due to the perceived stigma of, and discrimination against a criminal record, there exist varying degrees of criminal record disclosure ranging from partial, to full and non-disclosure. …

Jewish Orthodox Women In Higher Education: A Case Study, Tamar Kimmel

Doctorate in Education

This qualitative case study explores the lived experiences of Orthodox Jewish women navigating higher education within the United States. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 13 participants enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs, this study investigates the intersectional challenges these women faced as students, mothers, and members of a visibly religious minority. This research examines barriers related to gender expectations, religious observance, and antisemitism on college campuses. Participants reported a complex interplay of community support, institutional challenges, and personal resilience in their pursuit of academic success. The analysis reveals a pressing need for higher education institutions to implement culturally responsive policies, …

Sacred Bonds: The Association Between Religious Giving And Relationship Quality, Sofia C. Suxo-Sanchez Jul 2025

Sacred Bonds: The Association Between Religious Giving And Relationship Quality, Sofia C. Suxo-Sanchez

Theses and Dissertations

Grounded in interdependence theory, we sought to understand how religious giving is associated with relationship quality by drawing on two distinct datasets, one from emerging adult couples and another from established couples. Using structural equation modeling, we tested the direct association between religious giving and relationship quality, and whether it was mediated by materialism. Our quantitative findings contrasted previous research; we did not find materialism to mediate the association and found a significant, negative association between religious giving and relationship quality. Through a team-based coding approach, we explored how and why established couples believed religious giving impacted their relationship quality. …

New Approaches To Media Education Jul 2025

New Approaches To Media Education

Communication Research Trends

There is increasing consensus among educators around the world that some form of education for the use of the public media - especially television - should be an integral part of the primary and secondary school education.

Teachers are daily experiencing the fact that one of the major cultural influences forming the imagination of their students is the often long hours watching television. Sometimes television is a more important 'educational experience' than the school. Too often, however, the school, family life and the· television set are three mutually antagonistic or indifferent poles that leave young people drifting in a no …

The Challenge Of Cable Television Jul 2025

The Challenge Of Cable Television

Communication Research Trends

Cable television is at least thirty years old, yet it is still talked of as a new communications medium. Why? Optimists say because it has yet to realise its multi-channel potential to enrich and diversify television programming. Even better, cable will provide the citizen with a host of interactive information, educational, and transaction services.

Sceptics see cable offering old programming in new packages. They ask: Will only the well-off benefit? Who will control cable systems? Can privacy be protected? Does cable TV damage public service broadcasting? What do we really want cable for?

In many countries cable is on the …

Critical Reviews Of Advertising Jul 2025

Critical Reviews Of Advertising

Communication Research Trends

In the late 1950s and early 1960s a series of very influential thinkers began a strong movement of criticism of advertising. This questioning of advertising led to a deeper questioning of the 'cult of consumerism' which advertising propagates.

Vance Packard in his popular book, The Hidden Persuaders (1956) attacked advertising for using the techniques of depth psychology to raise 'subliminal anxieties' and manipulate desires for alcohol, cigarettes and other consumer items. John Kenneth Galbraith, in The Affluent Society (1958) pointed out that advertising was encouraging a wasteful consumerism which allowed a small portion of the world's people to use up …

Community Perspectives On Engaging Stakeholders For Human-Sumatran Tiger Coexistence In The Bukit Barisan Selatan Landscape, Rinekso Soekmadi, Novriyanti Novriyanti, Burhanuddin Masy’Ud, Damayanti Buchori, Christine Wulandari, Ismanto Ismanto Jul 2025

Community Perspectives On Engaging Stakeholders For Human-Sumatran Tiger Coexistence In The Bukit Barisan Selatan Landscape, Rinekso Soekmadi, Novriyanti Novriyanti, Burhanuddin Masy’Ud, Damayanti Buchori, Christine Wulandari, Ismanto Ismanto

Forest and Society

The Bukit Barisan Selatan (BBS) landscape, a vital habitat for the Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), is increasingly degraded and fragmented by plantation and agricultural expansion, driving tigers into human-dominated areas and creating conflict zones beyond conservation boundaries. However, despite global frameworks like the Kunming-Montreal 2050 Biodiversity Framework and IUCN advocating coexistence by integrating ecological and socio-economic priorities, the practical implementation at the site level remains uncertain, particularly regarding local perspectives on coexistence and their alignment with competing stakeholder interests. This study analyzes the alignment of parties in the context of the potential coexistence of human-tiger conflicts in …
