Promoting Counselor Trainees’ Clinical Skill Development Using Virtual Reality Simulations, Amber L. Pope, Chelsea Hilliard
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Although research on virtual reality (VR) as a pedagogical tool within counselor education is scarce, the parallel use of VR in health sciences education indicates VR simulations may have similar utility and effectiveness in training counselors. This conceptual piece aims to assist counselor educators in building VR simulations for counselors-in-training (CITs). The authors review the research on VR usage in counselor education and explore the practical implications of VR simulations for training counselors. The authors describe the development and utilization of VR simulations across multiple stages of training in a counselor education master’s program to support CITs’ clinical skill development …
A Model Of Retention And Remediation For Online Counselor Education, Colleen M. Grunhaus, Matthew Lyons
A Model Of Retention And Remediation For Online Counselor Education, Colleen M. Grunhaus, Matthew Lyons
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
Online counseling programs experience unique retention and gatekeeping challenges. Increased isolation and personal adversities are common factors associated with attrition for online students; and broad-access admission policies of online counseling programs often lead to increased gatekeeping concerns postadmission. Counseling programs develop policies and procedures related to retention, remediation, and dismissal, but extant models of remediation do not also address student retention or the unique challenges of online counselor education. We present a model, The Retention and Remediation Model for Online Counselor Education, that demonstrates a comprehensive policy for retention, remediation, and dismissal in online counseling programs through a three-prong approach …

Trauma Informed Care And Secondary Traumatic Stress Experienced By Counselors In Community Mental Health, Rebecca Renee Cameron-Hernandez
Trauma Informed Care And Secondary Traumatic Stress Experienced By Counselors In Community Mental Health, Rebecca Renee Cameron-Hernandez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Secondary traumatic stress (STS) is prevalent in counselors working with clients with trauma. Clients seeking services in community mental health (CMH) settings often have a higher prevalence of traumatic experiences and are unable to access services outside of CMH settings. Counselors working in these settings also generally face high caseloads, less pay, and often less experience in the field. Trauma informed care (TIC) has been shown to increase positive outcomes for clients and counselors providing services to clients. This quantitative survey study focused on the relationship between counselor attitudes related toward TIC and the severity of STS experienced by counselors. …

Crisis Management And Peer Support, Kevin H. Eaton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This mixed-methods Doctor of Ministry Research Project examined peers’ roles during crisis management situations and sought to improve their knowledge, skills, readiness, and confidence during crises. Peers are often the first to see precursors of a crisis or are the first present when a crisis ensues. This was true in the ministry context of a United States Army Reserve unit. A training program was developed to equip participants on crisis precursor identification, prevention, intervention, stabilization, post-intervention, and normalization concepts and techniques. Additionally, ethical consideration, professional resources, and resiliency concepts were trained. The concepts were delivered via an online web-based platform …

Negative Effects Of Combat Deployments On Military Partners, Brittany M. Harris
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Several military families experience trauma due to combat deployments and the methods they use to cope with those events can vary widely. Most research about military families is quantitative and focuses on the mental health of the service member who is directly affected by combat exposure. This study explored how military families describe the negative effects of deployment on them and how biblical faith helped them cope with those negative effects. This qualitative case study used a sample size of 14 military partners, with or without children who have experienced at least one combat deployment during the partner's time in …

A Mixed Methods Study To Evaluate The Nature Of The Lead Pastor's Psychological Capital And The Impact On Leading Church Revitalization, Toney Allen Cox
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In response to the substantial amount of church revitalization that is necessary to cause a noteworthy decrease in the 70 percent of churches in America that are declining or plateauing (Rainer, 2019, para. 4), lead pastors carry a biblical responsibility to lead churches into growth and spiritual health (Jamieson, 2011, para. 15-16). While church planting is a respectable portion of the macro solution, revitalizing declining or plateaued existing churches is an equally significant part of the solvent. However, a substantial majority of revitalization literature and education focuses on the practical methodology of implementing church renewal and emphasizing the lead pastor’s …

Challenging Elitism In Higher Education And Graduate Employability: A Thinking Piece, Bushra Baboo Rally
Journal of Graduate Education Research
This paper critically examines the prevalence of elitism in higher education and the complex challenge it posits for graduate employability. Several sections of this paper explore the concept of elitism through the lens of positional conflict theory and narrow it down to the relative graduate employability challenges that are experienced due to various factors. The current paper contributes to knowledge since the existing pool of literature does not tackle, in isolation, the function of elitism in posing employment challenges for recent graduates and is not expressed in the current conceptualisations selected in this paper. The paper ends with a call …

Graduate students and universities continue to be challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative study explored how U.S. graduate students (n=19) experienced and navigated pandemic challenges to their education using by Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, capital, and field. Respondents’ abilities to manage changes caused by the pandemic were largely dependent on the capital they or their informal networks had and the field where they positioned during pre-pandemic and pandemic. Institutions’ characteristics and supports greatly influenced students’ habitus and sense of belonging. Study respondents’ ability to maintain their educational trajectories was tied to both their assessment of their institution as …

A Qualitative Study On The Persistence Of Seasoned Student Affairs Professionals, Russell Taylor Jones
Dissertations and Theses
The attrition of student affairs professionals has plagued higher education for decades and continues to negatively impact the profession. Over 40% of new student affairs professionals leave the field and leading contributors to this departure include unsustainable working norms, outdated and deficient job-related incentives, and burnout. Prior research focused primarily on why staff intend to leave and do leave student affairs, but little research has explored why professionals persist and successfully cultivate a long-term, sustainable career in student affairs. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of seasoned student affairs professionals who have persisted in the field …

Intersectional Model Of Service Use: Understanding Transgender And Nonbinary Healthcare Access, Jarrod Call, Brendon Holloway
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Transgender and nonbinary (TNB) people often have difficulty accessing healthcare services because of the systemic forces of transphobia and cisgenderism. Despite this, there is little theory specifically designed to examine healthcare access among TNB people. We conducted a literature review to identify studies examining TNB healthcare access. We screened a total of 2,050 unique articles for inclusion, resulting in a final sample of 46 articles that met the review criteria. Theories used and key findings were coded to inform the development of the Intersectional Model of Service Use (IMSU) for TNB people. The IMSU builds upon current theoretical frameworks including …

U.S. counseling programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs mandate specific supervision requirements for counselors-in-training, in all specialty areas. Supervising school counselors-in-training (SCITs) differs due to the unique responsibilities of school counselors, which encompass crisis response, curriculum development, consultation, data management, small group and individual counseling, leadership, and student advocacy. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of preparedness levels of school counselor site supervisors. Data collection involved semistructured interviews with six participants who had all served or were currently serving as a school counseling site supervisor. The …
