The Adverse Childhood Experiences Identification Gap In Speech Language Pathology, Mallory Prior

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Children exposed to adverse childhood experiences, a variety of potentially traumatic events occurring within the first 18 years of life, are at increased risk for speech and language disorders. Due to the high prevalence of trauma and its lasting effects, it is almost guaranteed that children who are experiencing the ongoing effects from adversity will be found on practicing Speech Language Pathologists’ caseloads. This scoping review was designed to identify current screening practices of Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) in comparison to other professionals (e.g., allied health and education), as well as additional information related to screening procedures for SLPs. The …

An Argument For The Integration Of Black Psychology In Undergraduate Psychology Program, Kelsey D. Glass Mar 2024

An Argument For The Integration Of Black Psychology In Undergraduate Psychology Program, Kelsey D. Glass

University Honors Theses

When we think about the theories behind the foundation of American psychology, many European names come to mind (i.e. Freud, Erickson, Brofenbrenner etc.). This Euro-American mode of psychology has been the standard in American Undergraduate education since the founding of a formal psychological education in the U.S. but what about names like Wade Nobles, Joseph White, Na-im Akbar, or Linda James Myers? These forerunners of Black Psychology are elusive in the foundational education of current American Undergraduate programs due to longstanding racial bias in the field. This bias reflects the systemic racism that American culture was founded on. This paper …

How Schools Can Bolster Belonging Among Black Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Queer Youth, Allison Lloyd, Yael Granot, Elizabeth Rovegno, Ashley Bazin, Alba Bryant, Maryse Richards

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Using an intersectional framework, the current study examined how perceptions of school safety and identity valuation influenced Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ+) students’ feelings of school belonging in three schools where the student bodies were predominantly Black. Research on school belonging has focused on the experiences of white LGBQ+ youth or examined disparities in belonging through a singular identity (e.g., exclusively race). Moreover, while research has considered the role of safety in predicting belonging, this work has not considered ways that school context might particularly speak to or affirm the identities of students coming from multiply marginalized groups. …

The Need To Prioritize People With Disabilities In Nutrition Education, Kelseanna Hollis-Hansen, Jody Vogelzang, Bree Bode, Nazanin M. Heydarian, Rebecca Russell, Emily Watt Clarke

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Defining disabilities and tying them to chronic nutrition-related diseases can be difficult given the breadth and variability among definitions and the often-fluid nature of disability. Broadly defined disability categories include intellectual, physical, sensory, and individual disease states. People with intellectual disabilities, people with impairments to physical mobility, and blind and low vision people have all been found to be at higher risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and Type 2 diabetes (T2D) than persons without disabilities.

Good Grief: Emotional Symbolism In Kate Dicamillo's The Tiger Rising, Sadie Barham Mar 2024

Good Grief: Emotional Symbolism In Kate Dicamillo's The Tiger Rising, Sadie Barham

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis analyzes the symbol of the tiger in Kate DiCamillo’s children’s book The Tiger Rising. It deals primarily with each character’s response to the tiger and what this shows about his or her way of dealing with grief. Rob and Sistine, two children exhibiting signs of childhood depression, respond to their pain (and, consequently, to the tiger) in opposite ways: Rob internalizes his grief and anger, keeping it repressed, while Sistine covers for her grief with anger, lashing out at the people around her. When Rob finds a tiger caged in the woods, he responds with fear, leaving …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Although Native (American Indian and Alaska Native [AI/AN]) populations have high rates of abstinence from alcohol, health problems associated with substance use remain a pressing concern in many AI/AN communities. As part of a longstanding community-based participatory research (CBPR) project involving five years of relationship building and three preliminary studies, our team of academic and community co-researchers developed a culturally grounded intervention to facilitate recovery from substance use disorders among tribal members from a rural AI reservation. Our Indigenous Recovery Planning (IRP) intervention consists of six weekly sessions and aims to provide inroads to existing resources in the community, affirm …

Watching The Fall Of Roe V Wade: Media Exposure Relates To Us Women's Alcohol Use Intentions, Stacy M Post, Mary C Jobe, Arianne N Malekzadeh, Katarina E Aubuchon, Rebecca K Hoffman, Michelle L Stock, Lisa Bowleg

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVE: The Supreme Court of the United States’ decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization in June 2022 overturned Roe v. Wade and ended federal protection of abortion rights. Given the drastic policy changes as a result of the ruling and high exposure to media related to abortion, women opposed to the decision may have experienced distress, which could trigger maladaptive coping strategies, such as alcohol use. The present research examined how consuming abortion-related media in the weeks following the Dobbs decision impacted alcohol use intentions among women of reproductive age residing in the 13 “trigger law” states that …

Achieving Equity In Child And Adolescent Mental Health By Addressing Racism Through Prevention Science, Nada M Goodrum, Daniel K Cooper, Sarah Edmunds, Guillermo M Wippold, Jessica Bradshaw, Julie K Nguyen, Norweeta Milburn, Funlola Are

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Prevention science is a multidisciplinary field dedicated to promoting public health and reducing early risk factors that lead to negative health outcomes. It has been used to successfully improve child and family mental health and well-being, including for families affected by adversity. Despite advances in prevention efforts, major public health inequities remain for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) children and families, in part because of equity-implicit "one-size-fits-all" approaches that do not directly address racism which in part underlies the very health concerns these efforts aim to prevent. Structural racism not only introduces additional risk for negative health …

What Adolescents Say In Text Messages To Motivate Peer Networks To Access Health Care And Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing: Qualitative Thematic Analysis, Marguerita Lightfoot, Chadwick Campbell, Allysha C. Maragh-Bass, Joi Jackson-Morgan, Kelly Taylor

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background:While rates of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are extremely high among adolescents and young adults in the United States, rates of HIV and STI testing remain low. Given the ubiquity of mobile phones and the saliency of peers for youths, text messaging strategies may successfully promote HIV or STI testing among youths.

Objective:This study aimed to understand the types of messages youths believe were motivating and persuasive when asked to text friends to encourage them to seek HIV or STI testing services at a neighborhood clinic.

Methods:We implemented an adolescent peer-based text messaging intervention to encourage clinic attendance …

Parental Descriptions Of Childhood Avoidance Symptoms After Trauma, Zoe Blair-Andrews, Alison Salloum, Stephanie Evans, Vicky Phares, Eric A Storch Mar 2024

Parental Descriptions Of Childhood Avoidance Symptoms After Trauma, Zoe Blair-Andrews, Alison Salloum, Stephanie Evans, Vicky Phares, Eric A Storch

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

Recognizing and diagnosing the avoidance symptom cluster of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in young children has been challenging. This study examines caregivers' descriptions of young children's avoidance reactions. By describing parents' examples of childhood avoidance, clinicians, researchers, and educators may be able to provide more specific psychoeducation which may improve identification of avoidance behaviors in young children. Caregivers (N=73) of young children (age 3-7 years) participated in a semi-structured diagnostic clinical interview prior to enrolling in a clinical trial for childhood trauma. The assessment regarding the caregiver's description of the child's avoidance was audio recorded and transcribed for a thematic …

Providing Incarcerated Youth With A Community Of Their Peers, Providing Resources, And Modeling Healthy Attachment May Lead To Prosocial Behaviors, Emilee Brnusak

University Honors Theses

This thesis examines the connection between gang activity and attachment style. A summary of literature suggests that childhood attachment injuries lead to antisocial, maladaptive relationships and neurological changes that impact executive functioning and emotional regulation. These factors leave youth at higher risk of gang membership. This thesis then explores how an outreach experience at the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility inspired a large-scale intervention called Resources for Attachment-injured Youth (RAY) that could be implemented in youth prisons across the country.

Primary Care As A Protective Factor: A Vision To Transform Health Care Delivery And Overcome Disparities In Health, Edward L. Machtinger, Alicia F. Lieberman, Christina D. Bethell, Marguerita Lightfoot

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

A large body of research demonstrates that experiences of trauma, especially when they occur in the absence of safe, stable, nurturing relationships (SSNRs) and environments— known as protective factors— interrupt healthy development and predispose both children and adults to the most common causes of physical and mental illness and early death.1,2 Because minoritized and low-income populations are exposed to more trauma and have access to fewer protective factors, they experience higher rates of trauma-related health and social problems and severe disparities in health.1–4 Primary care clinicians increasingly recognize the role that trauma plays in the health and well-being of their …
