Addressing The Cultural Mistrust Of The U.S. Healthcare System: Creating And Illustrating A Bilingual Children's Book, Ximena Patino Enriquez
Addressing The Cultural Mistrust Of The U.S. Healthcare System: Creating And Illustrating A Bilingual Children's Book, Ximena Patino Enriquez
Honors Theses
This thesis delves into the healthcare disparities faced by Latino Spanish-speaking populations in the United States and proposes multifaceted approaches to address these inequities. Drawing on empirical research and critical analysis, the paper explores the roots of cultural mistrust, systemic discrimination, and language barriers that may hinder access to quality healthcare for Latinos. Through a review of literature, the thesis underscores the detrimental health outcomes experienced by these communities, particularly concerning chronic illnesses such as type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, it examines the role of children's literature in shaping attitudes towards healthcare from an early age, emphasizing the need for accurate …
Death And Drugs: Exploring Grief And Addiction Among College Students, Alexis B. Kelly
Death And Drugs: Exploring Grief And Addiction Among College Students, Alexis B. Kelly
Honors Theses
Grief and addiction are typically associated with death and drugs. However, there are many types of non-death losses and behavioral addictions that are overlooked in research and daily living. The experiences of grief and addiction affect everyone, often at many points in their lifetime. College students are at particular risk for these factors, as many changes are occurring in their environment during these years. This research aims to explore the impact and relationship of grief and addiction on college students. The main hypothesis is that grief and addiction are positively correlated with one another. To study this, a survey was …

Library Faith, Self-Care, And Academic Librarianship, John P. Delooper
Library Faith, Self-Care, And Academic Librarianship, John P. Delooper
Publications and Research
Librarianship has long been regarded as a service-oriented profession, compared with fields such as social work, teaching, nursing, and others with a high degree of emotional labor. The roots of this run deep, perhaps as far as Dewey, who spoke of a “library spirit,” which represented an extreme commitment to patron service. Dewey, who was obsessed with efficiency, both in his personal and professional life, created and popularized the American Library Association’s motto of “the best reading, for the largest number, at the least cost.” This motto, passed on as professional wisdom and taught in library schools for decades, was …

Aesthetic Exclusion Within American Capitalist Culture: Lgbtq Students At Gettysburg College And The Creative Reappropriation Of Clothing To Forge Personal And Communal Identity, James M. Mikulski
Student Publications
For LGBTQ individuals whose identity expression transgresses heteronormative aesthetic values, mass production and its prioritization of a heteronormative consumer base for profit create feelings of otherness and ostracism. Previous anthropological theory on mass production and advertising recognizes the transference of meaning onto material culture through marketing and identifies the generic symbolic meaning that carbon-copy, mass-produced products hold. Theory and research surrounding colonial encounters attest to power imbalances wherein material culture is imposed on a powerless group, and marginalized individuals react through rejection or creative reappropriation of the material culture, which provides a basis for examining the power imbalance between corporations …
Analyzing The Intersectionality Of Race And Socioeconomics In Foster Care And Child Welfare, Isabella Gallardo
Analyzing The Intersectionality Of Race And Socioeconomics In Foster Care And Child Welfare, Isabella Gallardo
Political Science Theses and Capstones
Racial disparities continue to persist in the child welfare system, resulting in disproportionate representation and differential treatment for children from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Understanding the root causes, systemic factors, biases, and consequences of these disparities is vital for discovering solutions to ensure fair and equitable treatment for all children. I synthesize existing research conducted on racial disparities in child welfare, delving into systemic factors, biases, and their consequences. The dataset I most utilized is from the National Data Archive on Child Abuse and Neglect (NDACAN). Correlation analysis was used to show the relationship between racial disproportionality and systematic …
An Examination Of Adversity And The Unique Mental Health Needs Of Black Crossover Immigrant And Refugee Youth (Iry), Ngozi V. Enelamah, Rebecca L. Skahan, Sheryl Thompson
An Examination Of Adversity And The Unique Mental Health Needs Of Black Crossover Immigrant And Refugee Youth (Iry), Ngozi V. Enelamah, Rebecca L. Skahan, Sheryl Thompson
Journal of Family Strengths
Over 500,000 youths become involved with the Juvenile Justice System in the U.S. annually. More than half have experienced maltreatment resulting in child welfare system contact, a co-occurrence described as dual system involvement. Immigrant and refugee youth (IRY) are numbered among Black young adults who are disproportionately represented in the dual system. There is little knowledge about the unique experiences of Black IRY who are involved with the crossover or dual system, as child welfare organizations are not required to collect or report that information. Previous studies suggest that Black crossover IRY are at an increased risk for dual system …
What Is Missing In The Child Welfare System? Mandating Trauma Informed Training For Child Welfare Staff And Foster Parents, Sonia Haynes
What Is Missing In The Child Welfare System? Mandating Trauma Informed Training For Child Welfare Staff And Foster Parents, Sonia Haynes
Journal of Family Strengths
Training of foster parents and child welfare staff is crucial for establishing a trauma-informed child welfare sector. Training enhances the ability of foster parents to provide nurturing care and eliminate the re-traumatization of this marginalized population. However, there are many barriers preventing agencies from becoming trauma-informed. Without changes at federal and state levels, the child welfare sector will continue to lack the resources needed for success with this vulnerable population. Investment in the research and development of these programs is vital, and more funding must be allocated to ensure agencies can provide trauma-informed training to all. Studies have shown that …
The Development And Initial Validation Of An Empathy Scale For Higher Education Instructors, Jennifer R. Bridenbaugh
The Development And Initial Validation Of An Empathy Scale For Higher Education Instructors, Jennifer R. Bridenbaugh
Dean's Leadership Council Library Research Prize
The relationship between a teacher and student can be an important part of student success, especially for students of higher education. One factor that may influence student outcomes is the level of empathy a teacher may demonstrate toward a student. Empathy is an important part of interpersonal relationships as it promotes a feeling or understanding of another’s emotions through taking on a different perspective. Empathy can also produce a response leading to altruistic behavior. According to some theoretical models the prosocial characteristic of empathy contributes to the social emotional competence (SEC) of a teacher or instructor. The higher the SEC …

2024-06: Disability Wage Justice: Ending Subminimum Wages And Advancing Equality For People With Disabilities, Samantha Koenigs, Stephanie Almanza, Christy Dauner, Rachel Murphy
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Subminimum wages are being paid to people with disabilities in Minnesota at a rate of almost 4 times higher than the rest of the nation, with some individuals making as little as .07 cents per hour. The subminimum wage is a discriminatory practice that violates peoples civil rights and contributes to disabled people being disproportionately poor. It is time for Minnesota to join the other 13 states that already ended paying people with disabilities a subminimum wage.

2024-05: A Place To Call Home: Source Of Income Protection, Farhiya Dini, Ally Petersen, Olivia Rivers, Sierra Wieneke
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
In 2010, the Court of Appeals wrongly applied the Minnesota Human Rights Act when it allowed landlords to discriminate against someone who is a recipient of a federal public assistance program. Minnesota should clarify what has been the law in Minnesota for 50+ years: Refusing to rent to someone because they are a recipient of federal, state, or local public assistance, including housing voucher programs (such as Section 8), and VASH (Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing), is a violation of the Minnesota Human Rights Act, it is discrimination, and it is illegal. Freedom from discrimination in housing must be the public …

Bridging The Gap: Strategies For Enhancing Wic Participation Rates In South Dakota, Melissa K. Wyum
Bridging The Gap: Strategies For Enhancing Wic Participation Rates In South Dakota, Melissa K. Wyum
Honors Thesis
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a national program administered by the USDA to State agencies for low-income women and nutritionally at-risk infants and children. South Dakota WIC provides services related to breastfeeding, healthcare referrals, and accessibility/knowledge of nutritious foods. Successes of WIC include improved birth outcomes, decreased healthcare costs, regular immunization rates, establishment of a primary care provider, and improved nutrition status. Although WIC has shown positive health outcomes for mothers and children, the relationship between the barriers of WIC access and resulting health outcomes in South Dakota is unknown. According to the …
America’S Prison Systems: Beginning The Switch From Punitive To Rehabilitative, Sydney R. Clair
America’S Prison Systems: Beginning The Switch From Punitive To Rehabilitative, Sydney R. Clair
Honors Thesis
America has one of the highest rates of incarceration in the world, along with many issues that keep its inmate population and recidivism rates high. The current inmate population faces unique challenges as it disproportionally consists of racial minorities, those with mental illnesses, and nonviolent drug offenders. Correctional rehabilitative programing, while implemented with good intentions, lacks effectiveness. This is due to factors including institutional staffing mindset and minimal development to expand inmate programs. There is also a lack of overall access to drug and educational courses that are so greatly needed for the incarcerated population. The reentry process for inmates …
The Ideal Model For Countermeasures Of Sexual Violence In The Universities Environment, Airlangga Surya Nagara, Elisabeth Ayu Puspita Adi
The Ideal Model For Countermeasures Of Sexual Violence In The Universities Environment, Airlangga Surya Nagara, Elisabeth Ayu Puspita Adi
Indonesia Law Review
This Cases of sexual violence are rife, including in universities. Data compiled by Komnas Perempuan shows that during 2015-2021, out of 67 reported cases of sexual violence against women, 35 cases occurred in universities. To overcome this, the government has issued the PPKS Permendikbud, and the TPKS Law. In fact, the existence of these regulations has not had a significant impact. It is proven that in 2022, there were 49 reports of sexual violence in universities received by the Ministry of Education and Culture's PPKS Working Group. Even as of May 2023, reports regarding sexual violence in universities are still …
Queer And Trans Migrations: The Impacts Of Presidential Discourse, Isabella Richards
Queer And Trans Migrations: The Impacts Of Presidential Discourse, Isabella Richards
Women's and Gender Studies Theses
Political discourse, defined as “the totality of all speech acts used in political discussions, as well as rules of public policy, sanctified by tradition and proven by experience” (Valerevna and Rakhmatovna 88) has a profound impact on shaping societal perspectives, policies, and cultural norms. In the United States, historical presidential rhetoric has reinforced ideals like the nuclear family, inadvertently promoting heteronormativity and white supremacy. Consequently, this has led to marginalized groups, such as queer and trans migrants, being unjustly portrayed as outsiders or threats. This research project demonstrates how presidential discourse has framed queer and trans migrants as outsiders or …

Background: The prevalence of trauma exposure poses a significant concern for public health. Extensive research has established the correlation between trauma and adverse health consequences. Studies indicate that adopting trauma-informed care (TIC) can enhance satisfaction, communication, and overall patient health outcomes. However, the current state of TIC education in academic programs and professional practice settings needs to be improved.
Objectives: The goal of this policy analysis project was to devise specific language and strategies to promote the implementation of a TIC education mandate for Indiana nurses.
Methods: The design of this project was an analysis of governmental …

Going Beyond Fear In Addressing Attorney Mental Health, Eric C. Lang
Going Beyond Fear In Addressing Attorney Mental Health, Eric C. Lang
Mercer Law Review
We know that a career in law is challenging, but our profession has only recently focused on the mental health consequences of those challenges. We first started analyzing mental health issues after a number of attorney suicides caught the public eye. Realizing the problem was much broader than the tragic outcome of suicide, we have spent the last several years focused on the use of statistics to convince the profession of its own dangers. The solution, to date, has been an emphasis on Lawyer Assistance Programs and “wellness” initiatives accompanied by what could be described as scare tactics designed to …

Missing Coercive Control In Family Court Proceedings, Carrie Leonetti
Missing Coercive Control In Family Court Proceedings, Carrie Leonetti
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
In New Zealand, like in the United States, coercive control generally remains outside the purview of the criminal law. It is therefore crucially important that court personnel identify and respond appropriately to coercive control in family law proceedings. Their continued focus on discrete incidents of physical violence between adults conceals the patterned and gendered nature of most [interpersonal violence] in which women are victimized and the patriarchal context of male privilege that continues to dominate heterosexual relationships. The failure to identify coercive control contributes to victims’ entrapment and increases the risk of violence continuing post-separation.
Cases involving coercive control generally …

Taps-Top Active Pre-Screening And Education: A Pre-Kidney Transplant Quality Improvement Initiative, Stacie Myers Bsn, Rn
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Due to the large number of patients waiting for a kidney transplant and the prolonged wait times, once a kidney becomes available some patients may not be medically ready. For this reason, some patients may miss out on a kidney transplant.
Objective: To assess the effects and outcomes of a one-to-one touch point interview and education seminar for pre-kidney transplant patients who are currently waitlisted for a kidney transplant.
Method: This quality improvement project evaluated the effectiveness of one-to-one interviews and an education seminar with a nurse navigator for approximately 60 adult pre-kidney transplant patients on …
Reducing 30-Day Hospital Readmission Rates By Addressing Social Determinants Of Health In The Home Health Care Setting, Kelly-Ann Federle Reilly
Reducing 30-Day Hospital Readmission Rates By Addressing Social Determinants Of Health In The Home Health Care Setting, Kelly-Ann Federle Reilly
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: In 2013, Medicare penalties for high hospital readmission rates spurred initiatives to reduce these figures. Despite efforts, 25% of elderly patients are readmitted within 30 days post-discharge, often due to unaddressed Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) like food, housing, and medication access.
Objectives: The project aimed to assess the effectiveness of interventions targeting SDoH for patients over 65 receiving home care services. It specifically sought to evaluate the impact of these interventions on 30-day readmission rates, focusing on addressing food, housing, and medication insecurities.
Methods: This project evaluated interventions targeting SDoH in-home care among patients over 65 to reduce …
