Advocacy And Amendments For Jillian's Law, Julie Hanse, Jalen All, Ashton Jones, Taylor D. Sanderson, Megan Stephens
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
In response to the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Jillian Ludwig, Tennessee lawmakers have advanced HB 1640 and SB 1769 through the legislature, garnering wide-reaching bipartisan and public support. The bill, dubbed Jillian’s Law, would prohibit the purchase or possession of a firearm by individuals deemed incompetent to stand trial, providing a much-needed piece of gun reform in a state with little to no restrictions. However, Jillian’s Law has raised concerns among disability advocates due to its punitive effect on people with disabilities. If passed, the law would streamline the process of involuntarily committing an individual who has been convicted of …

Immigrant And International Students’ Status And Mental Health In College, Stephen Adagwuni
Social Work Student Work
Immigration has become a significant topic of discussion in recent times in the United States (US) and worldwide. The increasing population of immigrants in the US has also been accompanied by a rise in the population of children from immigrant families pursuing higher education in colleges all over the US. In addition to children from immigrant families in the US, other international students from all over the world migrate to the US for their higher education. Research has shown, however, that immigrant students are more likely to experience various mental health challenges due to their unique situation, including acculturation stress, …

Mental Health Outcomes Among Latinx Immigrants In The United States: A Systematic Literature Review, Rosmery Medrano
Social Work Student Work
Immigrants face stressors that are unique to the migration experience and can cause or exacerbate mental health outcomes. The Latinx immigrant population in the United States is less likely to utilize mental health services and is more likely to have poorer mental health outcomes. The underutilization of mental health services and the negative consequences of untreated mental health issues among Latinx immigrants underscore the pressing need for further research to guide interventions and care models. This systematic literature review evaluates recent studies on the impact of immigration and acculturation on mental health outcomes and mental health service use among the …
The Implementation Of Harm Reduction Strategies In Eating Disorder Treatment: A Systematic Literature Review, Domenica Hudy
The Implementation Of Harm Reduction Strategies In Eating Disorder Treatment: A Systematic Literature Review, Domenica Hudy
Social Work Student Work
Eating disorders have one of the highest mortality rates of all mental illnesses (NEDA, 2021). The rate of relapse among patients who receive traditional eating disorder treatment is significant (Berends et al., 2016). The treatment landscape for eating disorders has historically been rooted in abstinence based models. According to Williams et al. (2010) this often overlooks and minimizes the complexity of individual experiences and continues to perpetuate stigma. Despite significant advancements in research and clinical interventions, current models frequently fall short in addressing the multifaceted nature of these complex disorders. However, evidenced based research and clinical practice shows the potential …
Exploring The Relationships Between Interracial Adoption, Adoptees’ Identity Development And Mental Health: A Systematic Literature Review, Erin Mackey
Social Work Student Work
Interracial adoption, which is the practice of placing a child or youth of a specific race or ethnicity with a family of a contrasting race or ethnicity, has become more prevalent in today’s world because of the overrepresentation of children and youth of color in the child welfare system. Although interracial adoption has been a controversial topic with little information in the past, it is known that identity plays a huge role in the development of children and youth as they grow. Experts have expressed concerns that interracially adopted children and youth are at risk for loss of identity including …

Intersections Between Childhood Maltreatment And Social Functioning In Adolescence: A Systematic Literature Review, Morgan Messina
Social Work Student Work
Childhood maltreatment is a public health concern in the United States that affects families and children annually. Childhood maltreatment can be defined differently for every individual including; sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, or emotional maltreatment. Childhood maltreatment can have multiple negative effects including depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and several internalizing or externalizing symptoms. Individuals who experience maltreatment in childhood are more likely to experience revictimization later in life, particularly in the form of peer victimization, bullying, gang affiliation, or substance use. Some of these issues may start emerging in adolescence as part of social contexts. This systematic literature review evaluates …

Honors Theses
This research project aims to investigate the feelings of acceptance experienced by multiracial individuals on predominantly white institution (PWI) campuses. The study explores various factors that may influence these feelings, including participation in organizations, relationships with friends and family, and experiences of discrimination on campus. Surveys will be used to collect data on participants' progress toward graduation, gender, classification, racial/ethnic background, first-generation status, participation in student and racial/ethnic organizations, experiences of discrimination, and feelings of acceptance on campus due to positive peer relationships. The multiracial identity is increasingly relevant in the United States, yet the experiences of multiracial individuals at …
The Psychological Effects Of Solitary Confinement On Incarcerated Individuals: A Systematic Literature Review, Lara Z. Parkes, Jonathan C. Dowers
The Psychological Effects Of Solitary Confinement On Incarcerated Individuals: A Systematic Literature Review, Lara Z. Parkes, Jonathan C. Dowers
Selected Student Publications
This systematic literature review looks at previous research that explores the possibility of a correlation between solitary confinement and the presence of mental illness within those isolated inmates. Twenty percent of prison inmates experience isolation for up to twenty-two hours per day with restricted social interaction and limited amenities (Hagan et al., 2018; Ryan & DeVylder, 2020). Certain inmate demographics are more likely to be sent into isolation in an effort to protect themselves or others, including members of the LGBTQIA+ community, the developmentally impaired, and the mentally ill. However, this practice often has the opposite of its intended effect. …

Take A Closer Look: Combating Ageism Through The Use Of Children's Literature, Janice Buehrer
Honors Projects
This project was completed as my final honors project for Bowling Green State University in the spring of 2024. I wrote and illustrated the children's book, "Take a Closer Look," designed for kindergarten through second-grade children. The goal of the book is to be used as a value-socialization device to instill positive perspectives on aging within younger generations. The book itself is meant to be an intergenerational tool as adults read the book about older adults to children, reaching the entire lifespan.

The Black Spirit: Theorizing Black Political Theology In The Long Civil Rights Movement, Da'von Anthony Boyd
The Black Spirit: Theorizing Black Political Theology In The Long Civil Rights Movement, Da'von Anthony Boyd
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation investigates how Black political theology constructed the philosophical, ethical, and political architecture of the long civil rights movement. By recovering the radicalism of Black political theology in the Black Freedom Struggle, I seek to assess how religion animates the normative theorizing and political mobilization of liberation movements. I closely examine the political theories of its preeminent organizations, including the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and the Nation of Islam (NOI). I offer a theory of Black political theology in defining civil rights praxis by tapping into the cultural synergy of theism with the …

Strategies To Recruit And Retain The Rural School Mental Health Workforce, Elaine S. Belansky, Liliana Diaz Solodukhin, Anna Edelman, Savannah Hobbs, Cynthia Hazel, Nicholas Cutforth
The Rural Educator
The United States is experiencing a teacher shortage crisis that is even more pronounced in rural communities. Teachers may be driven away from the profession if they feel inadequately trained or under-supported to address students’ mental health needs. As such, an important teacher retention strategy is to ensure schools have enough mental health professionals. The goal of this study was to explore three different yet complementary strategies to recruit and retain a robust rural school mental health workforce: a rural immersion program for graduate students enrolled in counseling and school psychology programs, a virtual professional development series for existing rural …
