Prevalence And Predictors Of Secondary Traumatic Stress In A National Sample Of Emergency Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study, Christian Paige Owen
Prevalence And Predictors Of Secondary Traumatic Stress In A National Sample Of Emergency Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study, Christian Paige Owen
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background: Emergency nurses experience traumatic situations as part of their professional role, leaving them vulnerable to secondary traumatic stress (STS). The distressing behaviors and symptoms of STS negatively impacts their well-being and ability to provide high quality care. Studies report that emergency nurses experience high levels of STS but less is known about how STS is influenced by their coping strategies and work-related factors. Further evidence is needed to better understand predictors of STS in order to support strategic efforts to improve the well-being and retention of nurses working in trauma-prone environments.
Aims: The specific aims of this study sought …

Establishing Community Connections For A Mobile Health Clinic, Shunera Wells
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Within the United States, there are many healthcare disparities. The supply and demand for mobile health have increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. This project's purpose was to improve and develop partnerships between communities and a new mobile health clinic with the intention of increasing healthcare services availability. The new mobile health clinic is an extension of a well-established university brick-and-mortar clinic. A survey was sent to county housing authority residents to determine community healthcare needs for various services including preventative and acute care services. Residents filling out the survey provided information about the targeted patient population and …

The Experience Of Remediation For At-Risk, Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Student Nurses, Nicole Jager
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
At-risk students face academic challenges that can affect nursing program progression. Remediation strategies can increase student success. The research problem addressed through this study is a lack of information surrounding the students' remediation experience in an at-risk, pre-licensure baccalaureate student nurse population. Individualizing remediation to the student population can increase success; however, the student perspective is needed to correctly identify and tailor the remediation activities to fit the students’ needs. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore the experience of remediation among at-risk, pre-licensure baccalaureate student nurses. Mezirow's transformative learning theory grounded this study. The research design …

The Role Of Social Support In The Mitigation Of Social Worker Burnout During The Aftermath Of Hurricane Maria, Miguel Angel Soto
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social workers are among the first responders to be activated during a natural disaster, and they remain aiding victims through the final stages of the recovery process. During the aftermath of natural disasters, social workers are required to work under extreme pressure and are at an increased risk of developing mental health issues that can affect their ability to provide adequate services. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the experiences of social workers who responded to Hurricane Maria regarding the role of social support and its relation to burnout. A purposive selection methodology was applied to …

Supporting First-Generation College Student Counselors-In-Training To Overcome Systemic Barriers: A Participatory Action Research Study, Randolph Connell Scott
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The need for mental health professionals is increasing rapidly, and the United States is facing a critical shortage of mental health counselors. Concurrently, one of the largest and fastest-growing graduate student populations is first-generation (FG) college students. But this marginalized population is less likely to persist to graduation than their continuing education peers. FG college students have many strengths that make them well-suited to become mental health counselors; however, counseling programs and counselor education and supervision (CES) faculty do not have the information about the challenges faced by these students or the supports that would help them persist to graduation. …

Art Therapists’ Familiarity With And Beliefs About Twelve-Step Addiction Recovery Groups, David Brickhouse
Art Therapy Counseling Final Research Projects
This research proposed to study what art therapists know and believe about twelve-step addiction recovery groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and Cocaine Anonymous (CA). The aim was to better understand the field’s familiarity with 12-step recovery, identify misconceptions about 12-step groups, and assess the comfortability of incorporating 12-step philosophy into clinical practice. Findings include that art therapists integrate 12-step into art making, are likely to refer clients to 12-step groups, and that higher familiarity with 12-step was associated with more positive perceptions and greater integration with clinical practice. The study participants also agreed that accessibility was …

Background Populations facing severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD), co-occurring homelessness, substance use and repeat offending have high levels of physical and mental ill-health. Poor oral health is one of the most common health problems in this population and is closely linked with substance use, smoking and poor diet. Issues related to the implementation of interventions among SMD populations to address oral health and related health behaviours are poorly understood. This study aimed to understand the factors that affect implementation (relevance of setting, acceptability and adverse effects of interventions) and the sustainability of interventions targeting oral health, substance use, smoking and …

The Attitudes Of Special Education Teachers Towards The Impact Of Covid-19 On Student Outcomes, Brittany Dixon
The Attitudes Of Special Education Teachers Towards The Impact Of Covid-19 On Student Outcomes, Brittany Dixon
Dissertations (2016-Present)
Globally, the coronavirus (COVID-19) has significantly impacted special education teachers and educational institutions. The onset of the coronavirus pandemic in the spring of 2020 led to an almost complete closure of school buildings, triggering a significant disruption to K -12 education across the United States (Education Week, 2020). The quick transition to online and remote learning presented one of the biggest obstacles, especially for special education teachers. The routine and social connections essential for the development of special education students were disturbed by the closing of the schools. Teachers had to develop innovative ways to keep students interested and connected, …

Cross-Cultural Management In Dublin: An Analysis Of The Practices And Challenges Faced By Managerial Staff In Irish Businesses., Ayala Lopes Carneiro De Oliveira
MA in International Business
Cross-cultural studies are gaining increasing relevance in both academia and the corporate world (Arslan, 2001; Chrobot-Mason, et al., 2007; Molinsky, 2013; Meyer, 2014). Ireland, with its immigration policies and incentives for multinational companies, is attracting skilled individuals, leading to a growing diversity in the country. Local businesses frequently hire foreigners, enriching teams with diverse perspectives and creativity. According to the Irish Census (CSO, 2023), over 420,000 immigrants aged 15 and over were employed in Ireland in 2022, surpassing the number of employed Irish nationals.
Highly culturally diverse workplaces necessitate specific management practices to address challenges arising from cultural misunderstandings, unclear …

The Effects Of Communication Overaccommodation On Non-Native English-Speaking Employees In The U.S. Workplace, Elizabeth Curtis
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Communication overaccommodation (CO) takes the form of baby talk, speech mimicry, and overcommunication, and its effects on recipients have been studied in physician/patient relationships, civilian/police officer relationships, manager/employee relationships, and native and non-native speaker communications. This study focused on CO in non-hierarchical relationships between native English-speaking and non-native English-speaking employees in the U.S. workplace. I investigated the effects of CO on non-native English-speaking co-workers, regarding their feelings of exclusion and satisfaction with their job. I also investigated the potential moderation effect of English proficiency on non-native English-speaking employees’ feelings of being excluded. It was found that the level of English …

Investigating The Relationships Between Study Abroad, Language Immersion, And Intercultural Sensitivity, Isabella Bea Battistoni
Communication Science and Disorders Honors Theses
An increasing number of students are choosing to study abroad. Once only an experience for those learning a language (University of Delaware, 2024), international education has become much more accessible for students of all disciplines. When choosing a program, students face a decision in choosing the level of language immersion and learning the trip will offer. This study examined the impact of different levels of language immersion on a student's intercultural sensitivity following a short-term study abroad trip. Intercultural sensitivity, defined as, “an individual's ability to develop emotion towards understanding and appreciating cultural differences that promotes appropriate and effective behavior …

Civil Disobedience Of Social Workers In Hospice, Jamie Leigh Roper
Civil Disobedience Of Social Workers In Hospice, Jamie Leigh Roper
Poster Presentations
What is civil disobedience? Civil disobedience is often thought of as peaceful protesting or non-violent law breaking. However, the textbook definition is “the refusal to obey the demands or commands of a government or occupying power, without resorting to violence or active measures of opposition” (Britannica). Peaceful protesting has been an integral part of American history. Henry David Thoreau, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr. were all civilly disobedient citizens who altered the course of history. Any and all protests, however, cannot be considered civil disobedience, since there are some requirements of this category.
