Improving Elder’S Overall Well-Being., Samantha-Garcia Sanchez-Garcia May 2024

Improving Elder’S Overall Well-Being., Samantha-Garcia Sanchez-Garcia

2024 Symposium

Identifying risk factors for social isolation is essential to determine the potential solutions to improve older adults’ overall well-being. Therefore, implementing an intervention (e.g., befriending services) that supports the development of social skills, increases access to social interactions and social support, and helps people change unhelpful thoughts about social situations through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, is an evidence-based psychotherapy that is successful in assisting people to change unhelpful social cognitions; all these components can contribute in increasing the likelihood that it will lessen social isolation and loneliness within this demographic. Until recently, there is no reliable information on the …

Bridging Usd Graduate Student Life And Mcnair Scholars Program: How To Enhance Mcnair Scholars’ Transition To Graduate School, Emily S. Esquivel

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

Research has shown a need to support graduate students with intersecting identities (e.g., first generation, underrepresented). Further, there is little research on the transition of McNair students to graduate school. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to learn about how McNair students at the University of San Diego (USD) can navigate graduate school preparation with the support of Graduate Student Life (GSL). The research questions that guided this project were: (1) How can I collaborate with GSL to enhance support for USD McNair Scholars as they transition to graduate school? and (2) How can GSL support McNair Scholars’ sense …

Breaking Barriers And Cultivating Collaborative Partnerships For The Torero Renaissance Scholars Program, Ti'shaun Allen

M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects

There is a high global demand for institutions to implement and maintain supportive programming for system-impacted students. System-impacted students are those who identify as former foster youth, homeless or at risk for homelessness, emancipated minors, or students in legal guardianships. My action research aimed to understand how to improve the Torero Renaissance Scholars (TRS) program model, delivery, and infrastructure to increase student engagement, program awareness, and partner collaboration at the University of San Diego (USD). TRS is a supportive program that assists students who are system-impacted. Findings from qualitative semi-structured 1:1 interviews, group conversations, and focus groups suggested increased employment …

Experiences Of Families Bereaved By Opioid-Related Death, Danielle Hicks, Emily Phasman, Sydney O'Shay, Luisa Kcomt, Stella Resko

Publications

Family members bereaved by a drug-related death are underserved. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 people bereaved by a close family member’s opioid-related death. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify themes in four areas: emotional responses (e.g. anticipatory grief), communication about the death (i.e. open or closed), supports (e.g. social or formal), and advice for others who lost a family member to opioid-related death. Findings highlight the need to support and reduce stigma toward people who use drugs and their families. This study guides social work practice by identifying the needs of families bereaved by opioid-related death.

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

U.S. female military spouses experience a number of challenges in sustaining their personal employment, career development, and career progression due to frequent military relocations. Previous studies have revealed that sustained employment provides individuals with a sense of purpose and identity, which significantly impacts overall well-being. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore experiences of U.S. female military spouses seeking employment after multiple relocations due to military reassignments and their perceived self-esteem post relocation. Self-determination theory provided the theoretical framework for this study. A generic qualitative approach and data from 13 participants’ individual interviews were collected and analyzed …

Pennsylvania School Social Workers’ Trauma-Informed Practices: Status And Future Needs, Jessica L. Schoonmaker

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

The idea of trauma-informed practices is a broad concept that can be utilized to create a safe environment in which individuals, families, communities and organizations that have been exposed to trauma can be and feel supported. Trauma-informed practices are important due to the pervasive nature of trauma exposure (Kilpatrick et al., 2013). Traumatic experiences can impact individuals’ physical and mental health over the course of their lifespans (Avery, et al., 2021; Centers for Disease Control, 2021; Gonzalez et al., 2016; McWey, 2020; Mersky et al., 2019; Porche et al., 2016; SAMHSA, 2014a; Trauma Informed Care Implementation Resource Center, 2021; Zyromski …

Sentencing Outcomes In Educator Sexual Misconduct Cases: Factors And Implications, Halima El Fituri

Student Theses

In recent years, there has been increased media coverage involving cases of educator sexual misconduct. There has been criticism that the gender of the educator impacts the way that crime has been portrayed in the media, with cases of female-perpetrated educator sexual abuse being sensationalized and minimizing the harm done to victims. This study seeks to explore how and if these gender biases shape the sentencing outcomes in prosecuted cases of educator sexual abuse. Additionally, the study will examine if and how various factors, such as the gender of the perpetrator and the gender of the victim, affect sentencing length. …

Dual-System Youth And Emancipating From Foster Care: Examining The Relations Between Delinquency, Independent Living Services, And Criminal Justice Involvement, Dylan Monahan Jones May 2024

Dual-System Youth And Emancipating From Foster Care: Examining The Relations Between Delinquency, Independent Living Services, And Criminal Justice Involvement, Dylan Monahan Jones

Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Youth who touch both the child welfare system (CWS) and juvenile justice system (JJS), termed dual-system youth, represent a particularly high needs population at risk of poor outcomes into adulthood. Among CWS involved children, youth aging out of foster care are particularly high risk of dual-system status. To help these teenagers in foster care prepare for adulthood, states offer independent living services (ILS). Despite the high risk of JJS involvement of these youth, we know very little of the association between ILS receipt and dual-system involvement. This dissertation has two aims, the first focusing on ILS and delinquency onset during …

Perspectives Of Stress And Coping Among Older, College-Educated African American Women, Jacquelyn Victoria Coats May 2024

Perspectives Of Stress And Coping Among Older, College-Educated African American Women, Jacquelyn Victoria Coats

Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Older African American women have excess rates of stress-associated chronic diseases. Yet, there is limited research exploring the intersectional position of older African American women to identify within-group differences in stress experiences. Specifically, stress and coping among college-educated women in later life has been largely overlooked. As trends show increasing rates of African American women attaining higher education, research investigating stress and coping among this group of high socio-economic status women is a valuable contribution to aging and public health. This study employed constructivist grounded theory methods guided by the Intersectional Life Course Perspective and the Transactional Model of Stress …

A Qualitative Study Of In-School Support For Lgbtq+ Students, Sara N. Barry

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Research suggests that LGBTQ+ students experience higher rates of bullying and harassment due to their gender identity in school. Therefore, the need for schools to create a positive school climate and provide interventions for these students is imperative. This study aimed to understand the effectiveness of these interventions from the perspective of adjustment counselors. This study followed Moustakas's methods of transcendental phenomenology and used semi-structured interviews to collect data. The sample consisted of seven adjustment counselors interviewed on their usage and perceived effectiveness of in-school supportive interventions for LGBTQ+ students. Five themes surfaced: an open and accepting climate, policies, professional …

A Case Study Of The Design Of The Developmental Mathematics Corequisite Courses At Arkansas’ Public Two-Year Colleges, Jean Anne Swillum May 2024

A Case Study Of The Design Of The Developmental Mathematics Corequisite Courses At Arkansas’ Public Two-Year Colleges, Jean Anne Swillum

Theses and Dissertations

Students determined to be underprepared for college-level mathematics would be enrolled in a sequence of developmental mathematics courses before taking their college-level mathematics course. Students who started in the lowest level of developmental mathematics had a twenty percent chance of completing their college-level mathematics credits (Bailey et al., 2010). Two innovative approaches were implemented to assist students with completing their college-level mathematics course. First, creating mathematics pathways courses aligned with student’s degree plans. Second, implementing developmental mathematics corequisite courses supporting the mathematics pathways courses. Thus, reducing the time it took an underprepared mathematics student to complete their college-level mathematics requirement. …

Barriers To Respite Care Among African Immigrant Mothers, Yewande T. Richards

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African immigrant children living in the United States (US) are highly susceptible to medically complex, life-limiting, and life-threatening conditions, including rheumatic heart disease, congenital heart disease, autism, and other neurodevelopmental disabilities. As primary caregivers, mothers frequently need a break from their caregiving responsibilities to experience normalcy, rest, and regenerate their reserves, which is critical to their families’ long-term stability. The purpose of this study was to understand access barriers to respite care services for these mothers and the role of race in potential disparities in access using a critical race theoretical lens. The generic qualitative research design was used with …

Exploring The Development Of Self-Concept Through Self-Portraits In Children With Significant Psychosocial And Emotional Needs, Kelsey Werner May 2024

Exploring The Development Of Self-Concept Through Self-Portraits In Children With Significant Psychosocial And Emotional Needs, Kelsey Werner

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

An individual’s self-concept is under significant development during childhood and adolescents. For children with significant psychosocial and emotional needs their environment, peer group, and accommodations can have a significant impact on the emotional development of their self-concept. Establishing a sense of belonging within relationships is a crucial part of the human experience. A negative self-concept can create barriers to children engaging positively with their peers, family, and community, which diminishes the opportunity for a felt sense of belonging. This capstone thesis is an attempt to develop an art therapy method informed by the expressive therapies continuum (ETC) to support the …

School Social Workers Conducting Home Visits: Practice And Perceptions, Sadie K. Kinnarney May 2024

School Social Workers Conducting Home Visits: Practice And Perceptions, Sadie K. Kinnarney

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

School districts are serving populations of students being faced with more multiplex sets of individual, school, family, and community level risk factors (Berzin & O’Connor, 2010; Boske & Benavente-McEnery, 2010; Frey et al., 2012; Kelly et al., 2010). Many children are unable to respond effectively to the school setting due to the stress in their family’s lives and the stressors in their home environment (Openshaw, 2008). There is knowledge that social and environmental constraints can negatively affect a child’s role in an educational setting and a student’s capability to learn tends to be challenged if their emotional and physical needs …
