Early Childhood Teachers’ Experiences With Overrepresentation Of English Language Learners In Special Education Programs, Tiffeny Sharpton
Early Childhood Teachers’ Experiences With Overrepresentation Of English Language Learners In Special Education Programs, Tiffeny Sharpton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The population of English Language Learners (ELLs) enrolled in kindergarten to second grade (K-2) in the Southern region of the United States has increased. K-2 teachers are challenged to serve ELLs in the regular education classroom and students are often being referred for special education services. There needs to be more literature on the overrepresentation of ELL students in special education programs. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore K-2 teachers’ experiences with the overrepresentation of ELL students in special education programs and what teachers need to facilitate appropriate interventions for ELL students within the general education …

How Can Art Therapy Help Individuals With Chronic Illnesses? A Literature Review, Emily Heidler
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This literature review examines the influence of art therapy on the self-esteem of individuals who suffer from chronic pain. The research question was: How can art therapy help individuals with chronic illnesses? Through an exploration of the topics of art therapy, chronic pain, parenting style, and self-esteem, it was noted that there is a gap in literature about art therapy’s influence on self-esteem resulting from chronic pain. However, an analysis of the literature reveals that art therapy can influence the self-esteem of individuals who suffer from chronic pain. Art therapy can influence this population by providing a sense of belonging, …

Best Practices For Counselors Working With Children Who Have Been Victims Of Sex Trafficking, Samantha Maier
Best Practices For Counselors Working With Children Who Have Been Victims Of Sex Trafficking, Samantha Maier
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Commercial sexual exploitation of youth is an umbrella term that includes sex trafficking, and other crimes, as well as receiving an exchange for something of value because of sexual abuse or exploitation of a minor (Perry et al., 2022). Children can develop chronic mental and physical health issues as a result of commercial sexual exploitation (Hickle & Roe-Sepowitz, 2014). Given that these experiences can be traumatic for the child, often leading to trauma-related mental illnesses, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) would be best suited for working with this population. This literature review and training module explore the risk factors, impacts, …
A Trauma Informed Schools Training For High School Educators, Ashlyn Skolness
A Trauma Informed Schools Training For High School Educators, Ashlyn Skolness
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
An increasing amount of research has emerged in the last decade emphasizing and imminent need to better meet the emotional needs of students, not only to be more successful in the classroom academically but to improve overall quality of life for their present and future selves. The average student spends approximately 1,080 hours at school in a 180-day school year, thus giving educators a primary role in recognizing and responding to students who appear to be struggling or showing signs of trauma (Nelson, 2022). Over half the US population has reported facing at least one adverse childhood experience, with a …

Contributing Factors To Special Education Teacher Burnout And Retention, Amy Schulz
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
Teacher burnout is an increasing concern as Minnesota state data indicates more teachers leaving the profession in the first five years of their career and fewer individuals emerging from teacher preparation programs. The area of special education continues to be an area of need as the state continues to report special education licenses as areas of deficit to meet the need across the state. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between burnout and attrition in special education teachers and to analyze the factors contributing to these issues. A voluntary questionnaire was emailed to …

From Mobilization To Politicization: Understanding Political Dynamics Of Community-Based Urban Food Security Policy In City Of Makassar, Sudarmono Sudarmono
Jurnal Wacana Politik
Since decentralization was reinforced in 1999, local politicians have exploited local policies to enhance their popularity and electability. In this study, I describe the implementation of a food security policy to demonstrate how the local arena had undergone massive political dynamics through unintegrated food governance demonstrated by local governments in Makassar City. This article aims to analyze the dynamic of urban food policy implemented by the municipality from 2013 to 2023. A qualitative approach had been employed through a case study of the implementation of food security policy. Data were collected by snowball method to eminent informants. Also, focus group …

Supporting International Students' Emotional And Social Wellbeing: Addressing Pressing Issues Related To Tuition And Visa Status Anxiety, Jinyi Chen
M.A. in Higher Education Leadership: Action Research Projects
The purpose of my research was to engage and build community with international students and to find ways to support them emotionally and socially leading to better mental health outcomes. My research question was: how can I support international college students to alleviate common mental health issues many continue to experience as a result of their international status? This occurs particularly when they must deal with tuition and visa status anxiety. I did three cycles in the research process using online surveys, interviews, and a large debriefing group meeting. Findings indicated that visa status anxiety is one of the most …

Philanthropy In The Helping Profession: An Overview And Introductory Workshop Intended To Support Counselors And Counselors In Training, Matthew Higgins
Philanthropy In The Helping Profession: An Overview And Introductory Workshop Intended To Support Counselors And Counselors In Training, Matthew Higgins
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Many new counseling professionals enter the field with a deep understanding of the therapeutic relationship but lack knowledge of the financial realities that sustain counseling services. Traditional training prioritizes building rapport with clients, leaving a gap in understanding the business side of the helping profession. As the demand for therapy increases, particularly in the United States, it's crucial for counselors to explore innovative solutions to sustain the field in the long term. Integrating education on philanthropic support into counselor training offers a creative approach that would fall in line with the ACA Code of Ethics. While more research needs to …

A Beginner's Guide To Gerontological Counseling: A Summary Of Considerations For Counselors Providing Psychotherapy To Older Adults In Rural Settings, Kelly D. Higgins
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
The elderly population continues to rapidly increase in the United States, leading to a significant need for mental health care among older adults. While older adults experience significant role changes, increased potential for physical and cognitive limitations, and heightened social isolation, all of which contribute to an increased psychiatric need, very few counselors are specially trained to provide adequate geriatric treatment. This is especially true in rural populations, where accessibility limitations are often more significant and mental health professionals are few and far between. This project provides a brief review of the literature regarding these various considerations, challenges, and areas …
Assessing Multiracial Experiences In Counseling: The Multiracial Life Story Interview, Kylie Mirabella
Assessing Multiracial Experiences In Counseling: The Multiracial Life Story Interview, Kylie Mirabella
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Multiracial individuals face unique challenges, including denial or invalidation of racial identity, sensitized perception of discriminatory experiences, and monoracial cultural biases. These challenges may lead to race-related adverse mental health outcomes, prompting need for culturally responsive clinical mental health counseling. This paper introduces a tool called the Multiracial Life Story Interview, adapted from Dr. Dan P. McAdams’ Life Story Interview, based on findings from current multiracial counseling literature. This interview is aimed to promote multiracial client exploration of racial identity, counselor evaluation of racist incidents and/or discriminatory experiences, and overall multicultural competency.
Losing It: Anti-Fat Bias And Implications For Counselors, Kate Bailey
Losing It: Anti-Fat Bias And Implications For Counselors, Kate Bailey
Educational Specialist, 2020-current
Anti-fat bias and stigma can be pervasive in the United States and can impact almost every aspect of culture in the U.S. Counselors are likely not exempt from holding anti-fat bias. Yet, anti-fat bias is often overlooked as an issue worthy of attention in a profession dedicated to advocacy. Anti-fat bias can negatively affect larger-bodied clients in the counselor/client relationship when counselors are unaware of the anti-fat bias that they hold. Using a framework of liberatory consciousness (awareness, analysis, action, and accountability) counselors may reduce the harm caused in the counselor/client relationship regarding anti-fat bias.
A Quantitative Correlational Study Of Job Satisfaction Among Critical Care Nurses In Hawai'i, Hazel Downing
A Quantitative Correlational Study Of Job Satisfaction Among Critical Care Nurses In Hawai'i, Hazel Downing
Dissertations
One way of reducing nurse shortage and providing effective patient care within critical care units includes addressing the relationships between job satisfaction and nurse socio-demographics. The current quantitative correlational study identified a moderate level of overall job satisfaction among critical care nurses in Hawaii. The highest level of job satisfaction was in flexibility of scheduling and lowest in child care facilities. Rejection of the null hypothesis for six of the eight hypotheses suggested presence of a relationship between socio-demographics and the subscales of job satisfaction. The linear combination of the 10 socio-demographics does not predict the rewards and the professional …

Educator Sexual Misconduct: Prevalence And Characteristics In Disciplinary Actions, Yan Shan Yu
Educator Sexual Misconduct: Prevalence And Characteristics In Disciplinary Actions, Yan Shan Yu
Student Theses
In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of reports of educator sexual misconduct (ESM), but the extent of the problem is relatively unknown. A lot of what is known is based on media reports and self-report surveys. There have been few empirical studies examining the scope of this problem based on official reports. Thus, this descriptive study aimed to examine ESM through official reports regarding educator disciplinary actions obtained from the Department of Education website of eight U.S. states. To identify the prevalence and characteristics of ESM across states, information was gathered and coded for a …

Dissertations, 2020-current
Supporting faculty and students in crisis response on higher education campuses is of growing importance in light of the rising mental health issues that students are experiencing. The focus of this dissertation is to gain an understanding of the experiences of counselor educators due to their unique identities: those of a counselor and educator. The format is a 3-style article dissertation with the first 2 articles being data driven (1 quantitative and 1 qualitative study) and the third article is a conceptual piece. Manuscript 1 focuses on moral injury and burnout for those who identify as a counselor in higher …
Impact Of Parent Reported Adverse Experiences And Other Family Stressors On Child Development And Home Visitation Participation Among Immigrant Families, Fithi Andom
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines variations in early childhood developmental and socioemotional health as well as level of participation in home visitation among recent immigrant families according to reports of adverse experiences (including poverty, intimate partner violence (IPV), and prior history of child protective services (CPS) involvement), maternal depression, and parent–child relationship measures. The period of early childhood is dependent on positive parenting to support optimum development, but parenting may be particularly sensitive to the detrimental influences of adverse experiences. Less is known about how the relationship between parenting, adverse experiences, and child development may differ for immigrant families. Home visitation has …

Differences In Ninth Graders’ Attitudes Towards Math Depending On Immigrant-Generation Status, Karla V. Santana Martinez, Dara Shifrer
Student Research Symposium
Introduction
Math is a subject that is often perceived as challenging and sometimes referred to as a universal language because the symbols and organization are the same from country to country. However, immigrant students can face obstacles such as language barriers that can make math even more challenging regardless of the universal language belief.
Methods
This research integrates the data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 on 20,000 ninth graders. The ninth graders were asked questions about math and their feelings on the subject.
Results
Among students with the highest scores on the standardized math test, the math …

Activism And Stress, Ashanti Laine T. Peredo, Taylor Gayton, Lalaine Sevillano
Student Research Symposium
Black women often shoulder a heavier burden of financial, social, and physical responsibilities within their families compared to non-Black individuals who do not identify as women. This increased load contributes significantly to mental health disorders and psychological distress and well as physical disparities. When compounded with experiences of racism and sexism, these responsibilities can lead to a sense of social invisibility and foster a tendency towards stoicism. This study is a mixed method study as it aims to quantitatively examine the relationship between activism, physical wellbeing measured by the Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity (CTRA), and psychological wellbeing among Black …
