School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Integrated health care poses a unique opportunity for social workers to deliver person-centered, empowering, and collaborative care addressing all aspects of patient health. This study analyzed four years of data from a project designed to train social work master’s students to be effective members on integrated teams. Students that participated in the project achieved statistically significant levels of improvement from pre- to posttests with large effect sizes on the Behavioral Health Consultant Core Competency Tool skills (n = 93, Cohen’s d = -1.752, t(92) = -16.894, p < .001) and the Team Skills Scale (n = 94, Cohen’s d = -1.558, t(93) = -15.101, p < .001). Wilcoxon signed-rank tests confirmed improvements. No existing evaluations of integrated training for social work students capture behavioral health competencies data. Offering specialized training in integrated behavioral health work to students has immense potential benefit for outgoing social workers seeking to support patients.
Military Sexual Trauma And The Psychological And Emotional Well-Being Of Gay Men, Alisha Simmons
Military Sexual Trauma And The Psychological And Emotional Well-Being Of Gay Men, Alisha Simmons
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers have found that male survivors of military sexual trauma (MST) may not report their assaults due to a combination of stigma, embarrassment, and fear of further assault and of being labeled a betrayer of the military. The stigma and discrimination that these gay males may face in the military culture may lead to intensifying their trauma, making it harder to recover. The goal of this study was to explore the reported psychological and emotional well-being and quality of life of gay males who experienced sexual assault while serving in the military. Freyd’s theory of betrayal trauma and institutional betrayal …
Improving Obesity And Related Chronic Disease Outcomes: Developing Nurse Practitioner Competence In Motivational Interviewing, Jodi Wilson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Background: Despite America’s persistent focus on health, over 40% of the US population is obese. A significant obstacle to mitigating disease in those with obesity is inspiring lasting behavioral change. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is highly effective yet under-utilized for catalyzing personal change inertia. Recent meta-analyses demonstrated statistically significant improvement in BMI, A1C, and blood pressure. Objectives: This evidenced-based project (EBP) aimed to develop nurse practitioner (NP) skills in deploying fidelity-based MI, resulting in increased adherence to lifestyle interventions. Implementation: This EBP project implemented MI into routine primary care through a self-paced healthcare provider MI certification and a 45-minute skill …

Exploring Social Work Leadership Skills At The Veterans Health Administration: A Transformational Leadership Perspective, Jose Arturo Camacho
Exploring Social Work Leadership Skills At The Veterans Health Administration: A Transformational Leadership Perspective, Jose Arturo Camacho
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
One of the problems in the field of social work leadership is the lack of a theoretical framework to guide its practice. Bass' transformational leadership theory (TFL) offers a framework for the field of social work leadership. However, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the largest employer of social workers in the United States, has not examined TFL skills with its social work leaders nor its effect on employee job satisfaction. This quantitative, cross-sectional, web-based study was designed to bridge the gap between social work leadership practice and leadership theory. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) survey was administered to 26 VHA …

The Path To Rehabilitation?: A Policy Analysis Of Juvenile Isolation And Room Confinement In Washington State, Trevor Buchan
The Path To Rehabilitation?: A Policy Analysis Of Juvenile Isolation And Room Confinement In Washington State, Trevor Buchan
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
Throughout the United States, the practice of isolating and confining youth for hours at a time is commonplace in juvenile facilities. The use of isolation in Washington State’s juvenile system is no exception. Washington recently acknowledged the dangers of juvenile solitary confinement but continues to utilize the similar practices of isolation and room confinement today. Isolation and confinement require further examination as they can cause significant harm to a youth’s social, physical, and educational development, increase youth aggression, and increase recidivism rates. Washington should reconsider whether to permit such a damaging punishment in a system purportedly committed to the rehabilitation …

Human Trafficking And Resources Provision In The Ed, Kathryn Patrick
Human Trafficking And Resources Provision In The Ed, Kathryn Patrick
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Human trafficking is both a human rights violation and a national health crisis. Despite nearly 165,000 identified cases in the United States since 2007, studies hypothesize that many more victims remain undetected despite up to 88% of trafficked persons interacting with the healthcare system during the time they are being trafficked. The lack of identification of these victims has often been attributed to healthcare providers' lack of knowledge regarding human trafficking indicators and lack of confidence in how to address trafficking situations when they are encountered. Emergency department care providers of a 500-bed central Illinois hospital received education and resource …

Therefore, the need for culturally competent care is crucial. This study seeks to address how culturally sensitive approaches to trauma-informed care can be developed and implemented by various providers to effectively support Native American victims of human trafficking in accessing assistance services. In order to evaluate the problem, a literature review was conducted, paired with qualitative interviews from relevant stakeholders. The findings demonstrated a significant …

The Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse On Interpersonal Relationships: A Cross-Sectional Study In Trinidad, Bernadette Marson
The Impact Of Childhood Sexual Abuse On Interpersonal Relationships: A Cross-Sectional Study In Trinidad, Bernadette Marson
Journal of International Women's Studies
Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a pervasive social problem that can have long-term effects on women’s relationships because it makes them vulnerable to revictimization. Girls are more vulnerable than boys to be victims of CSA, and those abused by someone they trust are at higher risk of experiencing increased trauma and interpersonal problems. This quantitative research study investigated the association between CSA and interpersonal relationships. Participants completed anonymous surveys exploring these two variables. Results showed that among other vulnerabilities, women who reported sexual abuse within the family reported overall greater interpersonal problems compared with non-abused participants. Given the prevalence of …

Journal of Family Strengths
Abstract
This study highlighted the unique elements of the role played by parent advocates (PAs) with lived child welfare experience in supporting families affected by the child welfare system. These elements set PAs apart from other professionals and included non-professionalized peer support, experiential expertise, a strong sense of identification, authenticity, legitimized empathy and understanding, and critical consciousness. As parent peer support programs gain popularity in child welfare services, it is imperative to understand and define these distinctive elements that underpin the PA role, as they serve as the foundation for novel approaches to working with, supporting, and empathizing with parents …

Queer and trans youth of color are often the target of surveillance, bullying, discrimination, and abuse. However, in an attempt to navigate such violent and discriminatory circumstances, the queer and trans youth of color in this dissertation found refuge in furry art and performances, both online and offline, where they were able to express themselves freely and thus acquire a sense of belonging among others with similar experiences. In this dissertation, "a furry" is used to refer to an individual who self-identifies as one who has an affinity for anthropomorphic animal characters. A common practice among furries is creating a …
