African American Caregivers' Perceptions Of Ecological Factors Related To Hospice Utilization, Monica Prescott Lonon
African American Caregivers' Perceptions Of Ecological Factors Related To Hospice Utilization, Monica Prescott Lonon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African Americans remain an underrepresented demographic in hospice care because they underutilize the service at disproportionate rates compared to the total population. The research problem addressed African American perceptions of the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem factors that impacted their perceptions and utilization of hospice. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore African American caregivers’ perceptions of environment-related factors that affected their utilization of hospice care. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 10 African American family caregivers aged 18 and over, with at least 2 years of experience as hospice caregivers. Findings from coding and …

Journal of Family Strengths
Maternal mortality rates for women identifying as Black are significantly higher than rates for women identifying as Hispanic or White women. The purpose of this community-based participatory research (CBPR) study was to enhance racial equity for Black women who are pregnant. We recruited 20 Black mothers in three Florida counties as co-researchers. These mothers had delivered a live infant within the 12 months prior to the study. Two major themes emerged: environment and health literacy. Theme one entailed three subthemes: lack of options, racial disparities, and feeling dismissed. One subtheme emerged from the second theme: asking for help and communicating …

Career Preferences Of Business Students: Traditional Career Path Or Entrepreneurship And Self-Employment?, David W. Whitlock, Ashley J. Hampton, Shanker Menon
Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship
Factors influencing career preferences of business students are explored. This study builds upon an original research project conducted in 1995, which focused on comparing pursuits of entrepreneurship versus more traditional business employment as career paths for business students. In the present study, 40 students enrolled in the senior-level capstone business course and 26 students enrolled in the freshman-level introductory business course in an AACSB accredited business school were administered surveys to determine career preferences and the factors influencing those preferences. The results of the introductory-level course are compared to those of students in the senior-level capstone business course and reported. …
Predicting Homelessness: Housing Risk Insights From Latent Class Analysis, Katherine E. Marcal, Nicholas Barr
Predicting Homelessness: Housing Risk Insights From Latent Class Analysis, Katherine E. Marcal, Nicholas Barr
Social Work Faculty Research
Millions of families with children in the U.S. struggle to afford adequate housing. Housing cost burden places families at risk for homelessness, and prevention efforts are hindered by limited understanding of insecure housing experiences at the margins. The present study investigated variation in housing insecurity experiences in a sample of mothers, as well as which risk profiles were most strongly associated with subsequent homelessness. Latent class analysis identified four distinct subgroups of housing insecurity: “Stable,” “Unstable,” “Rent-Focused,” and “Strategic Bill-Paying.” Classes differed on whether they made rent or utility payments on time, experienced utility shutoffs, or were evicted. Mothers who …
Exploring Parent Engagement In School-Based Behavioral Health Programs, Tina Marie Wehner Hickman
Exploring Parent Engagement In School-Based Behavioral Health Programs, Tina Marie Wehner Hickman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
It is important to address the concept of parental involvement in school-based mental health counseling in order to address the presence of mental health issues in students. In school-based mental health services, enlisting parent engagement in adolescent interventions can be difficult and can, therefore, inhibit positive adolescent mental health outcomes. This case study examined an educational organization in the southwestern United States to identify barriers inhibiting parent involvement in adolescent school-based mental health and to explore strategies to encourage parent engagement. The Baldrige performance excellence framework was utilized as a guide to inform an understanding of the organization’s mission, strategic …

Resettled Reproduction: A History And Analysis Of Family Planning Opportunities Among Refugees In Tennessee., Nicholas Lee Rummell
Resettled Reproduction: A History And Analysis Of Family Planning Opportunities Among Refugees In Tennessee., Nicholas Lee Rummell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Refugee women face a myriad of barriers to health after resettlement, including access to family planning services. They often have little knowledge of available family planning or contraception options, or where to obtain them after resettlement. As a result, refugee women in Tennessee suffer from high rates of unintended pregnancies, stemming from limited access to family planning services, and unmet family planning needs after resettlement. This dissertation combines the disciplines of history, public health, and public administration/policy to better understand why refugee women in Tennessee have had limited access to family planning services. To achieve this, it was necessary to …

A Wrong Made Right: A Qualitative Cross-Case Comparison Study Examining Program Influences On College Readiness, Persistence, And Student Success Outcomes At A Predominantly White University And Historically Black College, Richard Harper
Theses and Dissertations
The increase of underprepared students entering college decreases persistence and graduation rates at postsecondary institutions, ultimately declining degree attainment and social mobility of American citizens (U.S. Department of Education, 2016, McGuire, 2018). ACT, Inc. (2017) data suggests that overwhelming percentages of high school graduates are academically underprepared and are not college-ready. Moreover, an overwhelming number of academically underprepared students come from historically underrepresented populations. To help increase access and college readiness among these populations, specialized programs and services must be implemented to ensure these students are successful at the college level. The Dr. Charles W. Donaldson Scholars Academy is a …

How Household Economic Stress Matters: Family Functioning And Child Externalizing And Internalizing Behaviors, Jun-Hong Chen
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the multifaceted dynamics of long-term economic stress and its association with subsequent caregiver psychological well-being and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors. For a comprehensive measure of household economic stress, this dissertation delves into the severity, duration, and fluctuation of economic stress, considering diverse income and asset profiles. The research framework utilizes and integrates a range of existing theories to create a context for understanding the intricate interplay between economic stress, caregiver mental health, and children's behavioral outcomes. Data are drawn from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, which includes both information about household economic stress and child …

Comorbidity Of Disordered Eating And Depression: Examining Intersectional Inequities And Cardiometabolic Health Consequences Across The Life Course, Franklin Hunter Mcguire
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Traditional epidemiologic research has often neglected the degree to which interlocking systems of oppression may (1) describe the distribution of population health inequities and (2) moderate health exposure-outcome associations. Grounded in an intersectional framework, this three-aim dissertation used an intersectional multilevel modeling approach (i.e., intersectional MAIHDA) and US nationally representative data to answer a series of intersectionality-informed research questions relevant to disordered eating, depression, and cardiometabolic health. With data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, Aim 1 quantified the population distribution of weight loss-oriented disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) among US adults across intersectional groups defined by race/ethnicity, sex/gender, …

A key problem in achieving access to and sustained presence in computing and computing education (CEd) in the United States is environments that are all too often designed in ways that are harmful and inequitable toward systemically minoritized communities. While various scholars have explored ways to design equitable spaces within differing contexts, often, equity is framed merely as an issue of access. This dismisses the lived experiences of minoritized communities and can lead to shallow perspectives of equity that fail to address community concerns and further push these communities out of sustained participation and presence in computing and CEd. Drawing …
Using The Colonizers’ Own Weapons: The Politics Of Equality, Freedom, & Integration In Advocacy Against American Indian Termination, Eliza Kravitz
Using The Colonizers’ Own Weapons: The Politics Of Equality, Freedom, & Integration In Advocacy Against American Indian Termination, Eliza Kravitz
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
Beginning in the early 1950s, the United States Congress enacted a program of “termination” of American Indian tribes. By eliminating the special relationship between tribes and the federal government, termination aimed at the full assimilation of American Indians into U.S. society. Government proponents advocated for termination using the language of equal rights, freedom, and integration. Previous scholarship has shown that anti-termination advocates, by contrast, appealed to the internationalist Cold War language of development, self-governance, and global decolonization to resist termination. These same leaders also invoked the civil rights language of termination’s proponents, however. Their arguments illustrated how the federal government …
Critical Scoping Review Of Critical Consciousness As A Framework For Precollege Engineering Education, Devon Riter, James Holly Jr.
Critical Scoping Review Of Critical Consciousness As A Framework For Precollege Engineering Education, Devon Riter, James Holly Jr.
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Engineering’s promise to build a better world has been realized differently across the United States, often with lines of social identity determining who becomes an engineer, who benefits from engineering innovations, and who suffers devastating consequences. Many educational scholars have argued that engineering inequities are in part due to deep inequities in precollege engineering education, including the failure to enact pedagogies in which engineering educational spaces can help students recognize oppression and act toward liberation. In this critical scoping review we searched five databases to identify 72 relevant peer-reviewed articles for review. Our findings indicate that research on critical consciousness …
Neonatal Nurses’ Intention To Stay In The Nicu, Carolyn Penn-Griffin
Neonatal Nurses’ Intention To Stay In The Nicu, Carolyn Penn-Griffin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Neonatal nursing leaders and national health care organizations within the United States are concerned about the recent shortage of skilled and experienced neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses that may reduce the quality of care delivered to NICU patients. NICU nurses are passionate about caring for premature and ill full-term infants and providing educational and emotional support for their parents, some NICU nurses remain in the NICU long-term, yet others contemplate leaving the specialty. The purpose of this qualitative interpretative phenomenological research guided by Martin Fishbein and Ajezen’s theory of reasoned action was to explore the lived experiences of NICU …
Unveiling The Path To Lgbtq+ Inclusive And Culturally Competent Healthcare: A Multi-Dimensional Examination Of Trainings, Policies, And Perspectives, Hyunmin Yu
Dissertations
LGBTQ+ individuals encounter enduring discrimination and adverse healthcare encounters within the healthcare system, with profound implications for their health and wellbeing. Policymakers have advocated for the adoption of LGBTQ+ inclusive and culturally competent healthcare, including training for health professionals, to promote health equity among LGBTQ+ populations. However, implementation of these policies within healthcare systems varies, posing structural and individual-level barriers. In this dissertation, I employ an ecological model of LGBTQ+ health disparities and a conceptual model of determinants of health disparities in vulnerable populations within the healthcare system to examine the impact of structural inequities on the implementation of LGBTQ+ …

LMU Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation shed light on the need for higher education institutions to design support systems for undocumented students inside and outside of the classroom, especially when they apply to or attend prestigious universities. In addition, this study highlighted how I survived higher education, my home, and U.S. society through my multiple identities. The goal was to use my life experiences to show how powerful it is to be an undocumented student and how such students continue to influence laws, policies, and institutional change to make higher education more accessible and attainable. This study added to the literature on subaltern undocumented …

This program and policy-type capstone addresses the gap in inclusive services for young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in post-secondary education (PSE). It resulted in developing and implementing a Social Engagement program designed to enhance communication skills, self-advocacy, and workplace preparedness—key factors for academic and vocational success. Guided by the Occupational Adaptation Model (OAM) and the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance (PEOP) model, the program used a board game-based format to facilitate interactive learning and the practical application of social skills. Targeting young adults with ASD involved in vocational training, the program emphasized developing professional communication and workplace social interaction. The findings indicate …
Improving Transitions In Care Through Early Discharge Planning: A Quality Improvement Initiative., Sarah Markgraf
Improving Transitions In Care Through Early Discharge Planning: A Quality Improvement Initiative., Sarah Markgraf
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: A substantial body of evidence has shown transitions in care are one of the weakest links in healthcare networks, especially for older adults with complex comorbidities. Residents receiving short-term rehabilitation (i.e., rehab) transitioning to home from a skilled nursing facility (SNF) are the most vulnerable in the first 30 days post-discharge for adverse resident events, including avoidable rehospitalization. Avoidable rehospitalizations cost Medicare billions of dollars annually and lead to poor resident outcomes. Early discharge planning in SNFs for short-term stay rehabilitation has decreased rates of avoidable rehospitalizations, improved quality of life in geriatric residents, and improved care partners' perceived …

Reducing Stress And Improving Mindfulness Practices Among Mental Health Professionals Through Guided Meditation., Liara G. Patton
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Abstract
Background: Chronic exposure to psychological stress places mental health providers in a vulnerable position when coping skills are not learned or available. Mental health providers are at risk for both mental and physical illness due to the empathetic demands of their client’s stressors. The deficit in adequate coping skills can cause provider-client relationships to suffer and create an undesirable work environment.
Setting: This project took place in Somerset, KY, at a mental health company called A New Beginnings Achievement Center (ANBAC). Twenty-six employees work at ANBAC, all of whom are involved in providing mental health services to developmentally delayed …
