How Can Dei Training Change The Culture Of An Organization To Achieve Belonging And Retain Diverse Employees?, Kaisa S. Holt

University Honors Theses

Studies show the need for innovation and higher productivity yields can be best achieved through workforce heterogeneity. Creating effective DEI training frameworks is crucial for belonging, sustainable social well-being and enacting real change. This is key to proactively shifting our current system from one that responds to the need for DEI on a surface level to something that is regenerative. The aim of this review is to evaluate characteristics and enhancements added to evidence-based DEI training between 2020 and 2024. Studies were identified using the Portland State advanced database of academic journals on the DEI training and impacts of the …

Reducing The Incidence Of Frequent Hospital Readmissions In Veterans Population, Dasari Reddy

Student Scholarly Projects

Practice Problem: Veterans hospital readmission problems are challenging, specifically in the heart failure department, which severely impacts the patient's health, mortality, family, and quality of life. Frequent readmissions increase the usage cost, hospital budget, and loss of time from providers to other veterans, and failure to meet the key guidelines of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid for improvement.

PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was, in veterans with heart failure and one or more frequent hospital readmissions discharged in the last 30 days(P), does the appointment of a dedicated discharge nurse practitioner as a coordinator(I), compared to …

Lessons From The Old School: Phenological Responses Of The Horsetail Equisetum Arvense To Experimental Air And Soil Warming In Interior Alaskan Boreal Forest, Will Q. Hendricks Aug 2024

Lessons From The Old School: Phenological Responses Of The Horsetail Equisetum Arvense To Experimental Air And Soil Warming In Interior Alaskan Boreal Forest, Will Q. Hendricks

Biological Sciences

Although there are many studies on plant phenological shifts due to climate change, few of them focus on the phenological responses of seedless vascular plant species to warming climate. The boreal forest biome contains ~ 30% of the carbon stored by forests globally and horsetails with their circumboreal distribution are abundant in the boreal forest. Understanding the phenological response of horsetails to warming air and the timing of ground thaw is an important component for understanding how much carbon will be fixed by plants in the boreal biome in the future warmer climate. To examine the effects of air and …

Role Overload And Perceived Stress In U.S. Police Officers: A Replication Study, Michelle A. Hanna Collins Aug 2024

Role Overload And Perceived Stress In U.S. Police Officers: A Replication Study, Michelle A. Hanna Collins

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The current study sought to replicate a prior study (Duxbury & Halinski, 2018), conducted with Canadian police officers, to further explore the generalizability of their theoretical model of work- and family-role overload as sources of stress for male and female police officers in the United States. The Canadian study supported the proposed relationships between work-role overload, including four antecedents (Competing Demands, Outside Work of One’s Mandate, Non-supportive Culture, Employed Hours Worked), family-role overload (Dependent Care Hours), and police officer stress. A total of 357 United States law enforcement officers participated in the present study. A multivariate analysis was conducted utilizing …

Companion Dogs And Depression, Anxiety, And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Adult Icu Survivors: A Scoping Review, Lindsey Nelson, Sue Lasiter, Amanda Emerson Aug 2024

Companion Dogs And Depression, Anxiety, And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Adult Icu Survivors: A Scoping Review, Lindsey Nelson, Sue Lasiter, Amanda Emerson

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Intensive care unit (ICU) survivors are at risk for developing persistent psychological sequelae that have been linked to decreased quality of life and increased mortality after hospital discharge. Standardized evidence-based treatments are lacking, mainly focus on physical rather than psychological recovery, and often occur in formal settings. Benefits of human– companion dog relationships have not been explored in the ICU survivor population before. Thus, the purposes of our review were to summarize the literature focused on the influence of companion dogs on depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD); identify what is known about the potential role companion dogs play …

Economic Empowerment Of Young Women In Southern Uganda: An Embedded Mixed-Methods Dissertation Study, Josephine Nabayinda Aug 2024

Economic Empowerment Of Young Women In Southern Uganda: An Embedded Mixed-Methods Dissertation Study, Josephine Nabayinda

Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Prioritizing economic empowerment of young women is necessary for achieving gender equality and promoting sustainable development, as it is intertwined with sociocultural, familial, legal, political, and psychological practices that foster gender equality. Empowering women economically can help them gain control over their financial future, break free from the vicious cycle of poverty and inequality, and achieve autonomy and agency over their lives. Guided by the asset theory and the theory of gender and power, this dissertation employed an embedded mixed-methods approach to examine the economic empowerment of young women in Southern Uganda focusing on three aims. Aim 1 examined the …

Student Experiences With Self-Determination And Agency: Centering Disabled Voices Through Photovoice, Rebecca Boineau Smith Hill Aug 2024

Student Experiences With Self-Determination And Agency: Centering Disabled Voices Through Photovoice, Rebecca Boineau Smith Hill

Theses and Dissertations

Young adults with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) are less likely than young adults without disability to be employed, enrolled in postsecondary education, or live independently after high school (Lauer & Houtenville, 2017; Newman, et al., 2011). Self-determination, or the freedom to act as the primary causal agent in one’s life (Palmer & Wehmeyer, 1998), is a well-documented component of enhanced quality of life (Shogren et al., 2017) and a predictor of postschool success (Mazzotti et al., 2021; Test et al. 2009) for students with disabilities. People with IDD are less self-determined than their nondisabled peers, and often less self-determined …

Patients’ Experience Of Care Following Perinatal Case Conference, Mary Elise Nolen

Theses and Dissertations

The Perinatal Case Conference (PCC) at Prisma Health-Midlands Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) is a biweekly multidisciplinary meeting to discuss pregnancies with prenatally identified congenital anomalies. Patients are primarily cared for by MFM and may have appointments with various subspecialists during their pregnancy. The goals of the PCC are multidisciplinary collaboration in planning for the management of each pregnancy and familiarizing each practitioner with the pending cases, so if or when intervention is needed, the clinicians are familiar with the case.

Researchers performed a chart review and surveyed patients whose pregnancies were discussed in the PCC to learn the patient’s perspective of …

Cancer Screening For Patients With Intellectual Disability: Exploring Parent And Caregiver Perspectives, Jennifer Ryan Aug 2024

Cancer Screening For Patients With Intellectual Disability: Exploring Parent And Caregiver Perspectives, Jennifer Ryan

Theses and Dissertations

Intellectual disability (ID) is defined as a combination of deficits in cognitive and adaptive function, both of which must be present early in life. Adults with ID frequently have unique healthcare needs; however, they also require care that is routine for all adults. This includes cancer screening. The goal of this study was to evaluate whether or not adults with ID are undergoing cancer screening, understand the barriers they have faced in obtaining screening, and collect recommendations from parents and caregivers on ways to improve access to and facilitate screening for this population. We surveyed parents and caregivers of adults …

The first study conducts a systematic review synthesizing existing research on interventions in NES, revealing insights into research scarcity, author diversity, and areas for future inquiry. Subsequently, the second study investigates the perceptions of at-potential youth within NES, particularly in the southeastern …

An Emic Conceptualization Of Veteran, “You're Either One Of Two Things; You're Captain America Or You're Broken”, Steven Wahle Aug 2024

An Emic Conceptualization Of Veteran, “You're Either One Of Two Things; You're Captain America Or You're Broken”, Steven Wahle

Theses and Dissertations

The Global War on Terror (GWOT) conflicts have been sustained by an all-volunteer force for over 20 years. There have been no drafts, war bond drives, nor rationing. This is a departure from previous prolonged military conflicts in U.S. history. Volunteers with veteran status are often venerated publicly to express gratitude for their voluntary military service. However, the criterion for veteran status is inconsistent.

In the U.S., former military members tend to be regarded on one of two ends of a spectrum as archetypes in attempts to honor such service. On one end is the veteran hero veteran to be …

Interpersonal Process Recall In Supervision: Addressing Anxious Attachment, Su-Yun Huang Aug 2024

Interpersonal Process Recall In Supervision: Addressing Anxious Attachment, Su-Yun Huang

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) is a supervisory strategy that can be used in clinical supervision to help the supervisee discover important events and hidden messages during the counseling session and address issues of anxious attachment. This article seeks to enhance supervisee self-reflection in terms of relevant interpersonal relationship dynamics and therapeutic processes to address anxious attachment. In addition to explaining theoretical concepts, this article provides a case example illustrating how the supervisor used various IPR inquires to help the supervisee understand the problems implied by the client, and the counselor's countertransference and awareness of anxious attachment.
