Dancing In Chains: Policy Influence Of Social Organizations In China, Honggang Tan
Dancing In Chains: Policy Influence Of Social Organizations In China, Honggang Tan
Dissertations - ALL
The growth of Chinese social organizations has attracted attention from researchers and practitioners because it reflects the changing state-society relations in post-Mao China and has profound implications for the country’s political development. As a mediating structure between the state and citizens, they are supposed to represent their constituencies in the policy arena. The existing research records many social organizations’ policy activities. However, do all social organizations engage in such activities? If not, what organizations are active, less active, or inactive? Furthermore, what factors shape their different behaviors and determine different levels of policy influence? Regarding organizations with policy engagement, what …

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
This paper reports on a service-learning component introduced in an upper-level undergraduate geology course. Students identified rock types used by a local countertop manufacturing company and made fliers describing their mode of formation. Students then completed a final rock identification exam. To assess the effect of participating in the service-learning on students’ rockidentification abilities, an Independent Samples t-test was used to compare scores of students that completed the course to those from previous semesters who did not participate in service-learning. Students who participated in service-learning achieved higher final rock identification exam test scores (M = 91.71, SD = 1.59) in …

From Reflection To Resumes: Alumni Perceptions Of A Multi-Term Public Service Program’S Connection To Career, Ryan Nilsen, Alanna Gillis, Bryant Hutson, Lynn Blanchard
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
This paper explores how alumni of a multi-term public service program understand the connection between the program and their career development. Qualitative data were collected from 393 alumni based on six open-ended survey questions. While career and professional development is not an explicit goal of the program, a thematic analysis suggests that alumni perceived that the program connected to career reflection, boosted their resume, and guided them toward a public service career or specific jobs.
Social Theories And Service Learning: Towards Building An Integrated Service-Learning Sociological Framework, Mark Anthony D. Abenir, Carol Ma Hok Ka
Social Theories And Service Learning: Towards Building An Integrated Service-Learning Sociological Framework, Mark Anthony D. Abenir, Carol Ma Hok Ka
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
This theoretical paper anchors service learning (S-L) in three broad sociological theories. From there, discussions on the actual implementation of S-L based on these theories are explained to build an integrated S-L sociological framework. Four S-L modalities of community engagement are identified—namely transactional, transitional, transformational, and transcendental—with their corresponding respective levels of community participation—namely consultative tokenism, placation, partnerships, and citizen control. The application of such a coherent framework is discussed in the context of contemporary service-learning practices and community impact.

Minding The Gap: Negotiating Social Distance Across Service-Learning Experiences, Kendra R. Brewster, Melanie A. Fricchione, Melanie A. Fricchione, Phoebee Jean
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
The qualitative analysis of the experiences of a small study of 23 service learners indicated that individuals negotiate social distance as they: (1) ascribe agency in action and affect to themselves and others; (2) consider whether they belong on-site and connect with others; and, (3) grapple with the structural inequalities that shape social life. In discussing the multiple dimensions of social distance, this analysis ends with questions that critical service learning practices and pedagogies can address.

Measuring College Students’ Community Service Attitudes Validly And Efficiently: Development Of A Short Version Of The Community Service Attitudes Scale, Jody S. Nicholson, Heather Barnes Truelove, Jennifer M. Barton, Robert G. Moulder
Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education
The current study presents a brief-version of an existing Community-Service Attitudes Scale (CSAS; Shiarella, McCarthy, & Tucker, 2000) that is theoretically grounded, psychometrically sound, and empirically validated. Students (n = 544) participating in courses that required a service- learning component were administered the original CSAS and validation measures. An exploratory factor analysis suggested an eight-factor, 24-item solution with simple structure and good fit indices; a confirmatory factor analysis suggested good model fit, good internal consistency, and construct validity. The CSAS-Brief is an important tool that could help facilitate research studies and experiences related to community engagement in higher education.

Towards A Trauma-Informed, Culturally Competent Approach To Intimate Partner Violence, Debra Beilke
Master of Arts in Human Services
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a pervasive, worldwide problem with devastating physical, psychological, and economic consequences. IPV can happen to anyone—male or female, straight or LGBTQ, wealthy or poor. However, most reported cases of IPV involve women as victims. Furthermore, women are more likely to experience chronic violence, severe IPV, criminal harassment, or be killed (Stewart et al., 2021). According to the World Health Organization (WHO) (2021), 26% of women around the world have experienced violence (physical and/or sexual) from a current or former intimate partner at least once in their lifetime.
Given the pervasiveness of IPV and its serious …

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the estimated population of women engaged in sex work (WESW) is 2.5 million, aged 15 to 49 years (Laga et al., 2023). WESW face numerous challenges, including high-risk behaviors that expose them to HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), drug and alcohol abuse, criminalization, discrimination, mental health problems, and limited healthcare access. Globally, WESW are significantly affected by HIV, with new infections continuing to rise. Recent estimates show that although 8% of all new HIV infections are among WESW, 32.8% of them are unaware of their HIV status (UNAIDS, 2021a). The risk of acquiring HIV is 30 …

Improving The Teaching Effectiveness Of South African Educators As Inclusive Primary School Education Practitioners, Rashika Matthews
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In 1996, government policies in South Africa required all educational institutions to align with human rights and equality. Public schools now operate as inclusive institutions. Thus, there exists a problem that after 23 years of policy implementation, South African educators continue to acknowledge their need for knowledge, skills, and training to support effective inclusive education. There is an educational imperative to identify the South African educators’ gap in knowledge and skills to improve their effectiveness as active, inclusive practitioners. Mezirow’s transformational learning theory aligns with the South African educators’ need to build knowledge and inclusion skills. This research includes interviews …

Rural–Urban Migration, The Commodification Of Labour And Welfare Restructuring In China And Vietnam, Minh T. N. Nguyen, Jake Lin
Political Science Faculty Publications
Since both countries shifted from state to market socialism, China and Vietnam have been pursuing a development model that depends on the labour of millions of rural-urban migrants working in global factories. This chapter conceptualizes the rural-urban migration and the provision of welfare for the migrant labour force as integral to a cycle of commodification that encompasses the overlapping processes of commodification, de-commodification, and re-commodification of labour. After decades of collectivized labour under state socialism, the cycle begins with the commodification of labour through market reforms that led to mass rural-urban migration and the rise of the global factory alongside …

One in four women who experience perinatal loss develop intense grief. Adverse outcomes of intense grief include depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, suicidal ideation, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. Congenital anomalies such as anencephaly are the leading cause of perinatal mortality in the United States. The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of common experiential themes on perinatal grief intensity by exploring parents' lived experiences with a pregnancy complicated by anencephaly.
