Sickle cell disease (SCD) represents a major health challenge, affecting more than 100 000 people in the United States. Patients develop severe systemic manifestations from vaso-occlusive episodes, leading to severe pain crises and reduction of life expectancy. Despite its prevalence, individuals with SCD face not only dire health complications but also encounter systemic barriers to healthcare access and treatment. This exploratory study aims to provide preliminary insights into these challenges by examining the healthcare landscape for SCD patients in California, focusing on the accessibility and distribution of hematology clinics’ resources. Through a collaborative multi-site survey conducted, the study gathered insights …

An Exploration Of The Experiences Of Perinatal Depression And Anxiety Among Pregnant And Parenting Adolescents In The Tampa Bay Area Of Florida, Olajumoke Adetoun Ojeleye
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Perinatal depression (PND) and perinatal anxiety (PNA) are increasing among pregnant and parenting adolescents (PPAs), with PNA often underrecognized. This leads to significant socioeconomic costs and adverse maternal consequences if untreated. Hence, this dissertation explores the experiences of PND and PNA among PPAs, focusing on their knowledge gaps, perception, mental health needs, care preferences, and access to PMH care. The research employs a qualitative design (free-listing and in-depth interviews) to gather participant insights. Key findings reveal that many PPAs possess limited knowledge about PNA when compared to PND. Lack of support from partners, family, and peers emerged as the topmost …

Barriers To Exercise For Individuals With Developmental Disabilities, Mark Fleming
Barriers To Exercise For Individuals With Developmental Disabilities, Mark Fleming
Doctorate in Kinesiology
Individuals with developmental disability have been known to be less physically active and more prone to obesity than the rest of the population. One way to understand this is to examine the barriers that these individuals perceive to prevent them from getting the proper amount of exercise. An online survey was conducted to determine whether previously known barriers significantly affected these individuals' perceptions. The survey consisted of 513 individuals who identified as having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, or being a parent/caregiver. The barriers they were asked about were time, cost, transportation, energy, and interest. It …

Objective: Using an innovative data sharing model, we assessed the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the health of people who inject drugs (PWID). Design: The PWID Data Collaborative was established in 2021 to promote data sharing across PWID studies in North America. Contributing studies submitted aggregate data on 23 standardized indicators during four time periods: prepandemic (March 2019 to February 2020), early-pandemic (March 2020 to February 2021), mid-pandemic (March 2021 to February 2022), and late pandemic (March 2022 to February 2023). Methods: We present study-specific and meta-analyzed estimates for the percentage of PWID who took medications for opioid use …

Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"General strain theory posits that individuals commit crimes when they experience negative emotions following various sources of strain. One such source of strain is poverty. In this study, researchers use focus group data and apply a general strain framework to analyze criminal offending during the Missouri Community Action Network's Poverty Simulation© (2022) at a regional comprehensive university in the Southeast region of the United States. A total of 99 undergraduate and graduate students participated in the focus groups at the end of the simulation. Findings support Agnew’s (1992) theory with examples of sources of strain stemming from poverty leading to …

Experiences And Behavioral And Psychological Characteristics Of U.S. Parents Who Affirm The Tgnc Identity Of Their Child, Brison Scholar Lee Downing
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Discrimination remains a problem faced by many transgender and nonconforming (TGNC) individuals. Support for these individuals has increased significantly in recent years; however, there is no substitute for the love of family, especially parents and caregivers. Affirming a child’s TGNC identity is a challenge for some parents, who may experience feelings of loneliness and isolation from challenges related to being a parent of a TGNC child. The purpose of the generic qualitative study was to explore the experiences and behavioral and psychological characteristics of parents who had successfully affirmed the TGNC identity of their child. Guided by parent developmental theory, …
Exploring Juvenile Probation Officers' Perception Of Strategies To Reduce Juvenile Recidivism In Southeastern Michigan, Nikaya Cecelia Robin Banks
Exploring Juvenile Probation Officers' Perception Of Strategies To Reduce Juvenile Recidivism In Southeastern Michigan, Nikaya Cecelia Robin Banks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The high rate of juvenile recidivism in southeastern Michigan poses a threat to the safety of the community as well as a challenge to the juvenile probation officers (JPOs) who supervise them. The literature is abundant with data on juvenile recidivism; however, little is known about JPO’s perceptions on the efficacy of strategies and practices that aid in the rehabilitation of juvenile probationers. Grounded in both social learning and social bond theoretical frameworks, the purpose of this study was to explain how behavior is learned through processes of observation and the significance of positive bonds in minimizing delinquent behavior. The …

The Effects Of Social Learning On Second Language Acquisition And Memory: An Fnirs Study, Siena Christensen
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis addresses the question of what effect social learning has on successful second language acquisition behaviorally and neurologically. Participants were taught novel L2 words in a social learning condition and a non-social translation condition. They were then tested with a social testing condition and a non-social translation condition right after learning and at a later date, either 1 week, 4 weeks, or 2 months after learning. Brain activity was measured by comparing oxygenated hemoglobin levels with an fNIRS device. A significant positive effect of sociality was found for response accuracy, as words learned in the social condition performed better …

Supporting Student Mothers: A Study Of Well-Being, Challenges, And Resource Accessibility At Brigham Young University, Sophia Claire Cranney
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Student mothers may face unique challenges in balancing their educational and parental responsibilities, yet their experiences remain underexplored in academic research. This study examines the well-being, challenges, and resource accessibility of student mothers at Brigham Young University (BYU). Using survey data from 20 student mothers, this research evaluates their perceived school support, mental well-being, and awareness of available campus resources. Participants reported moderate levels of perceived school support and overall mental well-being, with lower scores on measures of relaxation, social connectedness, and energy levels. While no significant correlation was found between resource availability and well-being, qualitative responses revealed critical gaps …

Innovations in Health Sciences Education Journal
Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important component of health science training. Ensuring all students have access to necessary information prior to, during, and following simulation-enhanced IPE (Sim-IPE) activities is imperative to ensure a beneficial learning environment and student engagement. Ensuring access to necessary materials can be difficult due to differences in educational resources between institutions. This manuscript will assess the feasibility, acceptability, and satisfaction of using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) as an educational tool for a Sim-IPE activity. After a pilot Sim-IPE activity, data from student evaluations was reviewed. Updates were made including use of REDCap as a universally …

Thriving Families For Thriving Communities, Kimberly Sanford
Thriving Families For Thriving Communities, Kimberly Sanford
Doctor of Leadership
NPO statement: Christian parents in France need spiritual and practical support in an atmosphere of grace and vulnerability, which should be lived out and encouraged by church leaders.
Addressing this need will increase parental well-being. As parents feel better equipped to reach the goals they have set for their families, they will feel increasingly effective and satisfied in their role as parents. Healthier, thriving families has the potential to lead to healthier churches, organizations and communities.
This project will be deployed in the context of my ministry as a church planter in Northern France where I have worked since 2011. …

What motivates people to help, to care, to risk their own lives for others? What differentiates rescuers, helpers, carers, and bystanders?
There is no single explanation. Anyone who offers you a single explanation of why people do good things is oversimplifying. Empathy is very important. So is courage. And compassion. Bystanders, I want to impress on you, are not evil people; they are not people who should be put in a ship and sent to outer space. They are also good human beings, but they have not internalized some of the ethics of caring, of social responsibility, of knowing. They …

Comprehending resilience in the face of mental health issues is important, especially for young people who deal with a variety of psychological pressures. This study aims to investigate the co-occurrence of several mental health conditions and the role of resilience as a potential intervention in youth 14-25 years in the Nairobi metropolitan area. We recruited 1,972 youths. The following self-administered instruments were used: resilience (ARM-R), hopelessness (BHS), depression (BDI, PHQ-9), PTSD (HTQ), loneliness (UCLA Loneliness Scale) and suicidality (C-SSRS). Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted on the data. The key findings are that depression and …

Effects Of Foreign Aid On Developing Countries: Case Of Turkana County, Kenya, Baraka M. Akeyo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite substantial foreign aid investments in road construction projects in Turkana County, Kenya, anticipated benefits of improved access to social facilities, economic development, and rural and urban growth have not been fully realized. This study involved assessing the impact of foreign aid for road construction in Turkana County. Grounded in the social constructivism perspective, the research acknowledges subjective realities shaped by individual and societal experiences. The agency theory served as the theoretical foundation, framing the donor-recipient relationship as one where donors act as principals imposing conditions on recipient communities as agents. The study addressed the central research question: What is …

Transforming Communities
Practice courses in the field of social work use a student only approach to roleplaying. This traditional approach to developing clinical skills fails to incorporate feedback from seasoned professionals in the field. Utah State University is a land-grant institution educating social workers across the state. In two generalist practice classes, faculty incorporated twenty-four licensed clinical therapists to observe and provide real feedback on various therapeutic modalities to MSW students. Students reported an appreciation for the feedback provided and more confidence in their clinical skills. Community partners felt a sense of contribution to knowledge in developing the clinical social workers of …
