National Alliance Of Sickle Cell Centers Consensus Standards For Transition To Adult Care In Sickle Cell Disease, Stephanie Howe Guarino, Akshat Jain, Mohan Madisetti, Kenneth Rivlin, Payal C. Desai, Julie Kanter, Sophie Lanzkron, Deepa Manwani
Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers
Sickle cell disease (SCD), an autosomal recessive hemoglobinopathy, affects ∼100 000 people in the United States.1 The process of transitioning from pediatric to adult SCD health care systems can be disjointed and poorly coordinated, contributing to the high morbidity and mortality seen in this population. There is no universally accepted definition of a successful SCD care transition, nor are there existing standards and recommendations for SCD clinicians. National Alliance of Sickle Cell Centers (NASCC) uses a described modified Delphi process to reach consensus among its members, through which we defined standards and recommendations for transitioning care from pediatric to adult …

This article discusses older Latinos and their use of mental health services. A brief history of utilization and the contributing factors, including access to services, barriers, and acceptability of mental health services, are included. Sekhon et al.’s theoretical framework of acceptability is discussed in the context of Latino clients. The authors adapt the framework and apply the elements to work with older Latinos and their families. Common stereotypes and faulty assumptions about older Latinos are examined as the Latino population grows and changes in levels of education, language, family structure, roles, religion, and alternative practices continue. Core values for working …
Paternalistic Approaches To Care In Intensive Care And Its Potential Effects On Securing Consent For Organ Donation, Brian Tierney, Matt Carey
Paternalistic Approaches To Care In Intensive Care And Its Potential Effects On Securing Consent For Organ Donation, Brian Tierney, Matt Carey
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background: Organ Donation saved the lives of 1510 transplant recipients in the United Kingdom (UK) last year (NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), 2024. Although over 28 million people in the UK have registered a decision to ‘opt-In’ on the Organ Donor Register (ODR) (NHSBT, 2024), and a soft opt-out system has been adopted across all parts of the UK, securing next of kin agreement remains essential to proceed with organ donation (Rees et. al., 2024).Research Aims: Data from the UK’s Potential Donor Audit continues to highlight instances of limited engagement with organ donation services teams (O’Neill et al, 2024; NHSBT, …

Creation, Implementation, And Evaluation Of Authentic Virtual Reality Interprofessional Simulations, Kathleen Huun, Linda Mcquiston, Renee Bauer, Andreas Kummerow
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Creating and implementing interprofessional (IP) simulations in undergraduate healthcare education fashions opportunities for students to understand their roles in a collaborative team and enhance their confidence (Kleib et al., 2021). Disciplines may coalesce their knowledge, skill sets, and collective evidence-based practice to address multifaceted patient care.
An effective simulation modality to heighten practice readiness is virtual reality (VR) (Phillips et al., 2023). Immersion through a 3D platform provides visualization and interaction in a supposed real world (Cieslowski, 2023) for students to maneuver in while void of distractions. This intense focus facilitates critical thinking and clinical decision-making (Baysan et al., 2023). …

Nursing Pedagogy: Using Gaming For Multifaceted Knowledge And Skills For Emotional Intelligence, Ashley Lanai Harmon, Jill Jackson Van Der Like
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The current academic climate shows that students entering nursing school do not have the emotional mindset that will allow them success and longevity post-graduation in nursing (Budler et al., 2022; Christianson, 2020; Cleary et al., 2018; Crawford et al., 2021; Dugué et al., 2021) . Students often struggle through their program, with clinical and didactic or either independently in relation to academic success or performance. Additionally, once these students pass their NCLEX exam, they tend to find themselves overwhelmed and emotionally unable to withstand the pressures of floor nursing. As of 2024, research has shown that nationally, about 31% of …
The Multifaceted Impact Of Mindfulness On Chronic Diseases: A Comprehensive Review Of Its Relationship With Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Insomnia, Obesity, Gastrointestinal Disorders, And Migraine, Mazen Ismael
Journal of Medical Rehabilitation Science
Mindfulness has emerged as a holistic approach that enhances psychological well-being and physiological functioning. This comprehensive review explores the relationship between mindfulness and major chronic conditions, including Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Hypertension (HTN), Insomnia, Obesity, Gastrointestinal Disorders (such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease), and Migraine. Evidence suggests that mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) significantly improve disease management and quality of life across various patient populations. The review highlights recent randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses to provide an updated synthesis of the impact of mindfulness on symptom severity, metabolic parameters, inflammatory markers, and behavioral outcomes. Furthermore, the paper discusses …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chafee Independent Living Skills and Goals Program (CILSGP) is a federally mandated program for public child welfare organizations that provide services to adolescents and young adults in the foster care system. The problem that was addressed through this study was that program administrators are unsure of the additional professional development (PD) needs of the social service supervisors at the study site, a foster care independent living program for youth. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to investigate social service supervisors’ perceptions on the PD they receive; the influence the PD has on their self-concept as a learner, their …

Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: Hospital discharge is a complex process plagued with medical errors and poor coordination. Disjointed discharges are detrimental to Appalachian patients with access barriers and multiple chronic diseases. Telehealth is a tool used to improve access within rural Appalachia. To address this high-risk transition period, an interprofessional team deployed telemedicine to improve post-hospital care for Appalachian patients.
Purpose: Patients with uncontrolled chronic medical conditions were enrolled into the Intensive Telemedicine Transition of Care Clinic (I-TTC) with a primary outcome of 30-day Emergency Department (ED) presentations and hospital readmissions. Secondary outcomes included improved control of chronic conditions and patient cost savings. …

The Efficacy Of The Strengths-Based Resilience Intervention Among Thai First-Year Nursing Students, Siriphorn Na Nakorn, Genevieve Elizabeth Chandler
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The prevalence of mental health problems among college students was rising even before the COVID-19 epidemic. The university-age population was affected by the epidemic, and studies have shown that this group is more vulnerable to COVID-related stress, anxiety, and depression. The adjustment to college is difficult during the pandemic, leading to high-stress levels and other mental health problems. Strengthening oneself and developing resilience can improve one's mental health and prevent adverse health effects. This research aimed to evaluate the Strengths-Based Resilience Intervention, focused on leveraging personal strengths to improve first-year nursing students' access to resources that affect their perceived stress, …
“It’S Like Mental Marginalization”: Stories Of Four Music Students At A Hispanic Serving Institution., Sarah Minette
“It’S Like Mental Marginalization”: Stories Of Four Music Students At A Hispanic Serving Institution., Sarah Minette
Visions of Research in Music Education
Researchers have explored the ways in which P-12 teachers and students negotiate Latino/a/x/e cultural and musical identities in the classrooms (Abril, 2009; Lechuga & Schmidt, 2018; Palkki, 2015). While some have connected culturally responsive teaching to the needs of the growing number of Latino/a/x and Hispanic students in P-12 settings (Abril & Kelly-McHale, 2015), currently, no studies within music education address the experiences of music students at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), as well as the music making practices, curriculum, and faculty experiences at HSI. This case study examined how a music department at an HSI served the needs of its …
Drawing The Curtain: A Grounded Theory Analysis Of The Conceptualizations Of Culture, Ethnicity And Race In Professional Training Materials For Child Life Certification, Kia Lee Ferrer
Dissertations
Objectives: Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) are pediatric healthcare professionals primarily working in hospital settings to support children and families in navigating the developmental challenges of hospitalization, illness, and enduring medical treatment. Recognizing the presence of racial and ethnic health disparities, coupled with the field’s notable lack of diversity (98% White female), the child life workforce is increasingly acknowledging the undeniable evidence that discriminatory behaviors adversely affect a child’s life and well-being. As advances in the social sciences increasingly reveal that discrimination functions as a "socially transmitted disease" in a child's life, I predict that the failure of child life …

Situational Safety: Exploring The Relationship Of Environmental Change & Sense Of Belonging For Gsm Students In Academic-Required Internships, Nancy Goldberger
Dissertations
This research focused on recently enrolled undergraduates in programs including an academically required internship that bridges the transition between being a student at an IHE to being a professional in the field. Students who identify as LGBTQIA+ comprise a group referred to as Gender and Sexual Minorities (GSM) (Smalley, et al., 2018). The purpose of this research is to explore differences in the sense of belonging between students who identify as GSM their IHE versus experiences during their internship. The conceptual framework for this study draws on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (1943), Chickering’s seven vectors of student development (1969), and …

Background/objectives: Adolescence is a sensitive developmental window shaped by both vulnerabilities and adaptive potential. From an evolutionary standpoint, mental health difficulties in this period may represent functional responses to environmental stressors rather than mere dysfunctions. Despite increasing interest, integrative models capturing the dynamic interplay of risk and protective factors in adolescent mental health remain limited. This study presents a holistic, multi-level framework grounded in ecological and evolutionary theories to improve understanding and intervention strategies.
Methods: A two-round Delphi method was used to develop and validate the framework. Twelve experts in adolescent mental health evaluated a preliminary draft derived from the …

Adverse And Positive Childhood Experiences Affect General Health In Asian American Emerging Adults, Wenyi Chen, Chakra Budhathoki, Maichou Lor, Deborah Gross
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Positive childhood experiences (PCEs) are safe, stable, and nurturing relationships and environments in childhood.1 Both PCEs and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common and can co-occur. Empirical studies have shown that PCEs not only buffer the negative effects of ACEs,2, 3, 4 but also positively impact physical and mental health outcomes independent of ACEs.5, 6, 7, 8 However, few studies have simultaneously examined the influence of ACEs and PCEs in Asian American populations. This study examined the association between ACEs and general health and assessed whether PCEs moderated this association among Asian American emerging adults from diverse backgrounds. …

A Qualitative Study About Healthcare Practices For Rural Guatemalan Women, Linda Johanson
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The purpose for this qualitative study to assess the healthcare practices of women in rural Guatemala. Understanding how women there approach health would provide useful information for nurses involved in development of culturally sensitive sustainable healthcare programs in Guatemala, and in providing culturally sensitive care to Guatemalan patients who are living outside of their country.
Studies have confirmed many challenges that rural Guatemalan experience with respect to health care services. Medical equipment and medications are notably scarce for pediatric patients (Hughes et al., 2022), and availability of access to care for adolescents is also deficient (Hassan et al., 2020). Attempts …

Mapping Key Components Of Substance Use Disorder Stigma Awareness Education: A Scoping Review, Marianne Adam, Erin Kitt-Lewis, Kat Phillips
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The substance use epidemic is the latest wave in a series of global substance use related public health crises (Mania et al., 2021; Jemberie et al., 2020). A fundamental cause of health inequities, stigma impacts the development of substance use disorder (SUD), undermines treatment efforts, and drives disparities within these crises (Earnshaw, 2020; Nyblade et al., 2019; Carrara et al., 2021). Stigma awareness education is an essential component to prepare nurses and healthcare providers who care for people with SUD. However, the types and quality of stigma awareness educational programs is not well documented in the literature. The purpose of …

Signs And Symptoms Of Cyber Victimization And Risky Online Behaviors: An Integrative Review, J'Andra L. Antisdel
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The purpose of this integrative review is to describe latent or covert signals of cyber victimization and risky online behaviors in teens, given the increasing prevalence and severity of these issues. With the rapid growth of internet and social media use among teens, exposure to cyber victimization has become a significant concern, with estimates indicating that up to 61% of teens have experienced some form of cyber victimization.1 The reciprocal relationship between risky online behaviors and cyber victimization further complicates this issue, as these behaviors can both result from and contribute to victimization.2–6 This review was guided by Whittemore and …

The Development Of The Assessment Of Self-Care (Asc), Ashley R. Righetti
Clinical Psychology Dissertations
Self-care is a topic that has piqued the interest of researchers in recent years with much of the focus being on specific subsets of the population such as helping professions and those with chronic conditions. This trend has been consistent when it comes to the development of measures intended to evaluate people’s self-care practices. Designed with Butler and colleagues’ (2019) self-care model in mind, the Assessment of Self-Care (ASC) was developed to broadly assess self-care practices in the general U.S. adult population. This study discusses the development and initial validation of the ASC. After the item generation phase, exploratory factor …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Homelessness in the United States remains a persistent issue despite legislative efforts to address it. Single parents navigating homelessness encounter unique challenges in accessing stable housing and essential services, with domestic violence often serving as a significant contributory factor. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of practitioners regarding the needs of single parents navigating domestic violence-related homelessness. The empowerment theory provided the framework for this study, and data were obtained from focus groups with leaders and administrators who work in the areas of homelessness, economic security, and family violence. The study’s findings revealed significant gaps …

Autistic individuals are disproportionately likely to experience suicidal thoughts, feelings, and actions. Addressing suicidality is also a high priority of autistic community members. The goal of this study was to understand broad influences on suicidality and suicide-prevention needs for the autistic community. Using a community-based participatory research approach, we conducted a reflective thematic analysis of qualitative interviews with 16 autistic adults, 8 family members, and 14 mental health providers. Themes summarizing influences on suicidality and suicide-prevention needs centered on three broad thematic concepts: (1) Pervasive negative societal attitudes and social experiences have a lasting impact on autistic people's feelings of …

Background: There has been a lack of consistent high-quality residency and orientation programs for new graduate registered nurses (NGRNs) throughout the United States including Central Wisconsin.
Purpose: The practice gap has existed for many years and was recognized in the 1970’s when Kramer (1974) coined the phrase “reality shock”. The purpose of the mentoring program was to bridge the gap between the academic setting and the clinical setting for the NGRN in their first 90-days of practice.
Methods: The mentoring program was presented to prelicensure students during their final semester in nursing school. The mentoring program began when the prelicensure …
“Overpriced & Over Dosed”: Thematic Analysis Of Perceived Root Causes Of Us Maternal Mortality Rate, Emily Richardson, Rebecca Mccann
“Overpriced & Over Dosed”: Thematic Analysis Of Perceived Root Causes Of Us Maternal Mortality Rate, Emily Richardson, Rebecca Mccann
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Maternal mortality in the United States (US) is a problem of growing concern. In 2021 maternal mortality accounted for 32.9 deaths per 100,000 with non-Hispanic Black clients having a mortality rate of 2.6 times higher than non-Hispanic Whites. Of utmost concern, is the determination that over 80% of pregnancy related deaths were preventable. With the growing press around this topic, the authors sought to analyze the public’s perceived root causes for the increase in poor maternal outcomes. As maternal/ child experts, the authors know that client perception may not always be medically reliable; therefore, this study aims to gain understanding …
