Impact Of Restorative Yoga On Mental Health And Cognitive Function In Doctoral Physical Therapy Students, Carly Ritter Sep 2025

Impact Of Restorative Yoga On Mental Health And Cognitive Function In Doctoral Physical Therapy Students, Carly Ritter

Doctorate in Kinesiology

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students experience high academic stress, often impacting mental health. Restorative yoga may reduce stress, regulate the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis response, and support cognitive function. This study examined its effects on mental health and cognitive function in DPT students. Forty-four students were randomly assigned to restorative yoga or control groups in a double-blind design. Participants completed the Stroop Test, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-8), and a demographic survey at baseline and after 6 weeks. The yoga group practiced twice weekly; controls maintained regular activity, excluding yoga. ANOVA and correlation analyses …

Housing Challenges Affecting Well-Being Of Migrant Families In Canada: A Qualitative Study, Shela Hirani Sep 2025

Housing Challenges Affecting Well-Being Of Migrant Families In Canada: A Qualitative Study, Shela Hirani

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Introduction: Immigrant and refugee families are vulnerable to cultural stereotyping and socioeconomic hardships when they migrate to a new country. Immigrants and refugees make up around 22.3% of the Canadian population. New immigrants and refugees face unique barriers that render them vulnerable to inadequate and unsafe housing conditions. Access to adequate and affordable housing has been strongly linked with all aspects of health and well-being amongst immigrants and refugee populations. There are significant knowledge gaps and limited empirical studies on the housing challenges of immigrant and refugee families, specifically in the province of Saskatchewan which has a noticeable increase in …

Practitioners’ Perspectives On Preventing Environmental Gentrification In Chicago, Illinois, Usa, Tania Schusler, Amy Krings Sep 2025

Practitioners’ Perspectives On Preventing Environmental Gentrification In Chicago, Illinois, Usa, Tania Schusler, Amy Krings

School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Pollution cleanup, green space creation, and other improvements to environmental quality in cities are important to urban sustainability. However, because they occur within a political economic context characterized by structural racism, urban greening initiatives can intentionally or unintentionally reproduce racial, economic, and social inequities through environmental gentrification. We explored possibilities for improving environmental quality without displacing or excluding long-term residents including people of color, the poor, and members of other marginalized groups. We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with community organizers, environmental justice advocates, urban planners, housing specialists, and others who held deep expertise through their lived and professional experience in …

Addressing Food System Determinants Of Health Inequalities In Urban Environments:: Learnings From The Foodsequal And Foodsequal-Health Projects, Carol Wagstaff, Clare Pettinger

School of Health Professions

Diet is just one social determinant of health, with obesity and diet-related illness as leading causes of premature deaths and disability in the UK. People living in deprived areas of the UK are more likely to experience poor health outcomes, linked to many social determinants of health such as diet, housing, employment, education, power and discrimination and psycho-social factors such as isolation, quality of social network and perceived level of control. While socio-economic deprivation is a key risk for health inequalities, protected characteristics, vulnerable groups and geographical factors also indicate populations at risk of experiencing health inequalities. In this ‘opinion …

Charting A Constellation Of Rims Social Interoperability: Stakeholder Engagement At Two Midwestern Universities, Mark Zulauf, Elizabeth Schwartz

International Forum on Expert Finder Systems

At the heart of a valued research information management (RIM) service is a well-curated set of easily accessible and trustworthy data that describe an institution's research activity. The cultivation of those data into beneficial use cases requires ongoing collaboration among myriad stakeholders from within the research development community (librarians, faculty administrators, communications specialists, technology licensing agents, facility and equipment managers, IT personnel, etc.).

This presentation will explore the social interoperability involved in nurturing the library-managed RIM services at two major midwestern research universities—from the partnerships involved in unifying previously siloed sources of data to the use cases supported in each …

Associations Among Trauma Exposures, Workplace Factors, And Distress Responses In Archivists, Cheryl Regehr, Wendy Duff, Rachael Lefebvre

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

A growing body of research addresses the emotional impact on archivists from working directly with materials that contain depictions of human suffering and from working with researchers and donors whose own lives are depicted in the records. This study sought to determine the impact of exposures to potentially traumatizing events and ongoing work stressors on symptoms of post-traumatic stress and burnout in archivists, as well as whether organizational factors, including trauma-informed practices, are associated with levels of post-traumatic stress and burnout. Seventy-seven archivists participated in a web-based survey. Findings reveal moderate to strong associations between a variety of potentially distressing …

Experiences With Social Media Social Comparison In Women Ages 18-28: A Qualitative Study, Olivia Oakley Dr. Sep 2025

Experiences With Social Media Social Comparison In Women Ages 18-28: A Qualitative Study, Olivia Oakley Dr.

Dissertations

This qualitative study aimed to understand young women’s experience using social media and their reported mental health connections, such as self-esteem and comparison. As inferred in recent research, a wide range of social media content is being produced and consumed, from promoting the “thin ideal” to newer campaigns advocating for body positivity (Cohen et al., 2019, Grabe et al., 2008; Groesz et al., 2002). In a time where there is so much online content to consume, it is important to continue to evaluate the lived experiences of those using social media. This phenomenological qualitative research captured the lived experiences of …

On Good Terms: Pathways To Decolonizing Science-Appropriated Indigenous Terminologies In Arctic Research, Stanislav Saas Ksenofontov, Vera Kuklina, Alexander Kholodov, Andrey Petrov Sep 2025

On Good Terms: Pathways To Decolonizing Science-Appropriated Indigenous Terminologies In Arctic Research, Stanislav Saas Ksenofontov, Vera Kuklina, Alexander Kholodov, Andrey Petrov

Faculty Publications

Many western scientific disciplines adopted Indigenous Knowledge and terminology without deference to or understanding of the original meanings and values attached to Indigenous terms and concepts. This form of scientific appropriation has become a serious barrier to efforts of decolonizing Arctic research. The notion of Alaas is an example of such appropriation by the western science-based system of Indigenous knowledge about human–nature relations. This paper aims to discuss the term Alaas as it is conceptualized in both western science and Indigenous knowledge. The paper will explore the development of “alas” as an international permafrost science term and Alaas as an …

Increasing Access To Substance Use Disorder Treatment Through Interdisciplinary Education, Noah Weatherton, Ira Kantrowitz-Gordon, Natalie Hoge, Batoul Abdulsater

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

The opioid and SUD epidemic drives a need to dramatically increase treatment opportunities, yet there is a dearth of practitioners who feel comfortable and competent in this area. And there are not enough specialists. To address this, we have developed an elective, online, asynchronous course for Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Social Work, and Public Health housed within a DNP program at UW School of Nursing. Course content includes concepts of trauma-informed practice (and education), stigma, etc., and are woven throughout the course. Use of telehealth simulation scenarios served to prepare students for therapeutic patient interactions and to practice skills of motivational …

The Potential Benefits Of Co-Design In Dog-Assisted Treatment Programs For Veterans Seeking Mental Health Care, Parvin (Pary) Bahmanyari, Pauleen Bennett, Tiffani Howell Sep 2025

The Potential Benefits Of Co-Design In Dog-Assisted Treatment Programs For Veterans Seeking Mental Health Care, Parvin (Pary) Bahmanyari, Pauleen Bennett, Tiffani Howell

People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Veterans are more likely than the general population to experience a range of mental health problems. While many veteran mental health support programs are available, veterans may struggle to access and engage with these services for various reasons (e.g., a stigmatized perception of mental health disorders, mistrust). Animal-assisted services have become more popular in civilian and military health care settings where traditional therapies (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy) may not always be effective. Assistance dogs, for example, which live with veterans to provide disability support, have been successfully employed for veteran mental health. Unfortunately, a subgroup of veterans may miss out …

Communication Inhibitors: Dilemmas In Community Partnerships Amidst Mental Health Crises In Texas, Alessa Juarez, Kendra N. Bowen, Johnny Nhan

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Community partnerships between police departments, social services, and healthcare providers continue to struggle in various ways, with mental health crisis response remaining a primary yet fragmented service delivery. Using the nodal governance perspective, this paper provides qualitative insight into the existing communication and resource barriers between law enforcement personnel and social service providers in a large urban county in Texas. Four key themes are presented: staff and resource availability, continuity of care, staff personnel and characteristics, and communication efficiency. Policy implications are also discussed, with the study’s findings supporting the prioritization of building stronger communication between existing social service providers, …

Quality Improvement Project Optimization Of Bed Capacity Management At A Tertiary Pediatric Facility, Barbara M. Stewart Sep 2025

Quality Improvement Project Optimization Of Bed Capacity Management At A Tertiary Pediatric Facility, Barbara M. Stewart

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Emergency department (ED) overcrowding can be defined as a circumstance in which the number of patients seeking care has exceeded the resources available. ED overcrowding can have significant negative impacts on patient safety, quality of care, and hospital finances. The use of an ED saturation measurement is supported by research and widely used in adult emergency departments. The quality improvement project evaluated the correlation between a modified National Emergency Department Crowding Scale (mNEDOCS) and established ED metrics- length of stay (LOS) and left-without-being-seen (LWBS) rates. The intervention was guided by the revised Iowa Model and the Model for Improvement, both …

The Progressive Changes In Posttraumatic Symptoms And Posttraumatic Growth Associated With Traumatic Incident Reduction, Joseph L. Mcclory Sep 2025

The Progressive Changes In Posttraumatic Symptoms And Posttraumatic Growth Associated With Traumatic Incident Reduction, Joseph L. Mcclory

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many millions of people are suffering from symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Just in the United States, 13 million Americans had a PTSD diagnosis as of 2020. Through the theoretical lens of catharsis, analysis of variance was used to examine whether traumatic incident reduction (TIR) is associated with changes in posttraumatic symptoms and posttraumatic growth by comparing pre, mid, and post-TIR PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) scores. Regression was also used to test whether post-PCL-5 scores accounted for variance in the post-PTGI scores. Ninety-seven TIR cases from the mental health agency between 2017 and …

The Dynamics Of Implementing International Norms On The Elimination Of Sexual Violence In Indonesia, Muhammad Iqbal Yunazwardi, Erina Ikawati

Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional

This study analyses the dynamics of the implementation of international norms regarding the elimination of sexual violence in Indonesia, with a focus on the influence of narrative contestation on the protection of victims. Although Indonesia has ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), implementing these norms at the domestic level still faces various challenges. The ratification of the Sexual Violence Crime Law (TPKS Law) marks a significant milestone in the protection of victims. Still, its effectiveness is doubtful due to resistance from domestic actors and political interests that shape the public will. Through …

Practical Pre-Rotation Resources Enhance Knowledge And Attitude Towards Discharge Planning For Medical Students, Ho-Man Yeung

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

Interdisciplinary discharge planning is known to be a difficult subject for medical students to comprehend given its convoluted nature. There is no standardized curriculum for students and there is a large variety between every inpatient rotations. Internal Medicine in particular sees variety of patients with unique psychosocial challenges. We previously proposed tools that are simple and specifically designed for learners and students including pyramid of discharge needs and disposition flow chart. Our current work examines the efficacy of using these resources by fourth year medical students during their subinternship rotation. Between May and September 2023, 54 students completed the rotation. …

Patterns Of Resilience, Patterns Of Tragedy: Perspectives From Inside And Outside To Theorize Beneficial Interventions Serving Urban African American Youth Struggling With Community Violence, Katherine Tyson Mccrea, Kevin Miller, Amzie Moore, Heather L. Watson Sep 2025

Patterns Of Resilience, Patterns Of Tragedy: Perspectives From Inside And Outside To Theorize Beneficial Interventions Serving Urban African American Youth Struggling With Community Violence, Katherine Tyson Mccrea, Kevin Miller, Amzie Moore, Heather L. Watson

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Community violence, defined as violence perpetrated in community as opposed to home settings, is a salient social problem, causing terror and tragedy, especially in urban, low-income communities of color. Interventions supporting youth struggling with community violence have been insufficiently studied and theorized, especially from strengths-focused, culturally relevant standpoints in the context of contemporary social policies. This paper outlines psychodynamic theoretical models for services that have been developed via participatory research and provided for 19 years for over 1000 youth. Then, to understand how youth make use of the programs from an “inside” perspective, four intensive case examples are described. From …

The Benefits Of Combining Center-Based And Home-Based Care For Preschool Children, Savannah Christensen Sep 2025

The Benefits Of Combining Center-Based And Home-Based Care For Preschool Children, Savannah Christensen

Family Perspectives

Abstract: Research shows that the quality of care children receive in early childhood—whether from a parent, relative, or formal child care provider—significantly influences their cognitive, behavioral, and emotional development. This article analyzes several peer-reviewed sources to examine how different caregiving environments impact development and how these effects are moderated by the quality of care and the home environment. It also addresses how socioeconomic status can shape the quality of care children receive and the long-term outcomes associated with each caregiving type. While parents are typically seen as the ideal caregivers, children in nonparental care, such as with relatives or in …

Financial Shocks, Emergency Savings, And Hardship Among Low-Wage Workers, Haotian Zheng, Stephen Roll, Mathieu Despard

Center for Social Development Research

For many households, particularly those with limited income or financial resources, medical emergencies, car repairs, sudden job losses, and unexpected expenses can quickly precipitate financial hardships. Emergency savings provide a buffer that allows households to manage disruptions and avoid reliance on options that incur high-interest debt. Addressing the lack of emergency savings is not just a matter of individual responsibility; it also poses a broader policy challenge with implications for public welfare. Drawing upon data from the nationally representative Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility survey, this brief reports on low-wage households’ experiences with shocks, savings, and hardships. It also discusses …

How Medical Mistrust Serves As A Barrier To Mental Health Treatment In The African American Community, Nicholas Young Sep 2025

How Medical Mistrust Serves As A Barrier To Mental Health Treatment In The African American Community, Nicholas Young

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Throughout history, research has depicted the notion that African Americans do not make use of mental health treatment, even when their mental health status may deem it clinically necessary. One of the most prevalent deterrents to African Americans seeking treatment is the mistrust of the medical system. In the African American community, medical mistrust has a longstanding history that stems from the discrimination, racism, lack of representation in the field, and medical mistreatment that African Americans received as test subjects by the medical community over time. Various instances, throughout history, of African Americans being unjustly treated— for the sake of …
