Factors Impacting A Community Based Poverty Project: An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Communication Through A Case Study Approach, Miranda Kay Wickam
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Parental involvement has been related to higher student achievement. While the professional literature provides exemplars of effective communication strategies between home and school, the impact of factors such as cultural and economic diversity and the efficacy of specific approaches remains an important area of inquiry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the various communication strategies used within a community driven development (CDD) project in an economically depressed zone in a metropolitan city in the Midwest. Focus groups, interviews, and a project report were the data points. An a priori coding system of two present themes, opportunities and barriers, …
Expressing Pride: Effects On Perceptions Of Agency And Communality Based On Race And Gender, Rosalyn A. Miles
Expressing Pride: Effects On Perceptions Of Agency And Communality Based On Race And Gender, Rosalyn A. Miles
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This study investigated how the expression of pride shapes perceptions of agency and communality, and how those perceptions differ when the pride expresser is of a certain gender and race. Participants were primed with a scenario featuring a picture of a target varying in race and gender. Participants were then invited to complete a survey assessing their perceptions of agency, communality, leadership competence, and ascribed interpersonal hostility. It was hypothesized that the expression of pride over happiness would rank someone as being more or less agentic, communal, competent in leadership, or interpersonally hostile. It was also hypothesized that black targets …
Stigma And The Reluctance To Address Mental Health Issues In Minority Communities, Gary L. Kreps
Stigma And The Reluctance To Address Mental Health Issues In Minority Communities, Gary L. Kreps
Journal of Family Strengths
Health disparities are a serious problem for members of minority communities in the United States. Disparities do not only lead to negative influences and inequities in the outcomes from serious physical health problems (such as cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, and diabetes) for members of minority communities, but also lead to significant problems with outcomes from serious mental health conditions (including stress-related, manic-depressive, and psychotic disorders, as well as suicidal tendencies) for ethnic and racial minority group members in the US. While current epidemiological evidence suggests that the actual rates of incidence of mental health problems is not significantly different across …
Rekindling The Role Of Affectivity In Ignatian Discernment Of Spirits In The Context Of Christian Life Communities In Darjeeling, India, S. John Kennedy
Rekindling The Role Of Affectivity In Ignatian Discernment Of Spirits In The Context Of Christian Life Communities In Darjeeling, India, S. John Kennedy
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
This thesis addresses and offers solutions to the issue of lack of affectivity in decision making among the Christian Life Community members in Darjeeling. The problem has been traced from their former religious practices of immediately appeasing spirits by offerings material things through village priests when the spirits interfere in their life. This practice has come down to instant decision making without out paying close attention to the consequences, as they would cease all activity to appease the spirits. To examine and resolve this issue, this thesis first presents the relationship between affectivity and discernment. Second, the thesis presents an …
Understanding Mental Health Literacy Of Hispanic Patients In Primary Care Settings: Examining The Relationship Between Depression Stigma, Depression Knowledge, And Education Level, Veronica Lopez
Social Work Theses - Archive
Hispanics are less likely to access mental health care services due to stigma related to depression and lack of cultural effective education, along with other socioeconomic factors. Hispanics are more likely to access care through a primary care provider, making a primary care setting with an integrative behavioral health program an ideal place for early mental health interventions. Understanding the mental health literacy of patients in a healthcare setting may improve quality of care, that can lead to early detection of mental illness and can help engage a patient into treatment. The present study seeks to add to the research …

The goal of this qualitative dissertation is to explore why some international adoptions result in dissolution. I attempt to answer this question through the experiences of American parents who adopted children internationally and experienced dissolution of an adoption. The objective of the research is to expand existing knowledge concerning international adoption disruption because the topic is extremely understudied. Factors examined are: aspects contributing to adoption dissolution as described in existing literature; historical perspectives on adoption, including international adoption; effectiveness of adoption services as ways to enhance adoption outcome; proposed methodological approaches for adoption dissolution research; and results of the study. …

As defined by the National Association of Social Workers, a binding core value of all professional social workers is competency: the aspiration and action of contributing to the professional knowledge base (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). The intention of this systematic review is to advance professional knowledge base by providing a current review of empirical psychodrama literature and to advocate for further research and investment concerning psychodrama and its expansive potentials. The following research will seek to identify particular populations and problems most associated with effective use of psychodramatic techniques. Congruently, the work will also pursue a differentiation of …

Three papers on military-related posttraumatic stress and emotional numbing symptoms are proposed for this three-paper dissertation. The first paper will be a systematic review of the literature on the psychosocial impact of combat-related emotional numbing symptoms in veterans. The second paper will utilize a phenomenological approach to analyze veteran’s posttraumatic stress stories using transcripts of ‘milvlogs’ (military video web blogs) and interviews with vloggers. The third paper will present the results of a pilot study analyzing the impact of a single session of heart rate variability biofeedback on military-related emotional numbing symptoms and the use of a mobile phone app …

Expressive Therapies Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of undergraduate academic and clinical training programs for music therapy in addressing the subject of personal growth, as it relates to the development of critical self-awareness and self-care strategies. The study further attempted to identify which self-care strategies are being used by practicing music therapy clinicians and how a practice of self-care impacts their work with distressed and/or traumatized individuals. An electronic survey sent to all board-certified music therapists (MT-BCs) (N = 6369) generated a demographic profile of music therapy practitioners who identified their clientele as distressed and/or traumatized. Research has revealed that forms of violence are interconnected, but less work focuses on the interconnection of victimization and perpetration, particularly with men. Subsequently, our understanding of the complexities of violence exposure in men’s lives and related policies and treatments remains limited. The present study utilizes a sample of at-risk for violence involvement, college men, to examine the relationships between childhood victimization, adulthood victimization, and adulthood perpetration. Participants are 423 college men receiving course credit who completed a battery of standardized questionnaires via an anonymous web survey. Logistic regression is used. Results indicate that 27% of the men report polyperpetration …

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This was a qualitative study exploring the experiences of counselors working with clients who are coping with an advanced illness and approaching end of life. The study focused on the risks and benefits of fostering relationships with end of life clients, with an emphasis on how these practitioners process their experiences. While supporting clients at end of life, these professionals often were impacted by the deaths of people who they had worked with for varying lengths of time.
The findings suggest that these counselors experienced many of the same issues that have been documented by other helping professions, and that …

Mental Health Care Treatment Seeking Among African Americans And Caribbean Blacks: What Is The Role Of Religiosity/Spirituality?, Natalie Turner
Social Welfare
According to the 2014 SAMSHA National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 18.1% of American adults (ages 18 and over) experienced some sort of mental health issue. Furthermore, estimations have shown that around 20% of older adults experience some sort of mental health problem. While the percentage of older adults increase, they are less likely to use mental health care services than younger and middle aged adults. In addition, racial/ethnic minorities, such as African American and Caribbean Blacks are less likely to use mental health care services. The percentage of older racial/ethnic adults is also increasing from 18% in …
Monstrous Souls Imprisoned In Monstrous Flesh: James Baldwin's Discourse Of God, Power, And Love From Go Tell It On The Mountain To The Amen Corner, Naomi Mcpeters
English
In the middle decades of the twentieth century, James Baldwin offered a critique of a corrupt church framework in a way that differed from other black writers and social activists of his time, particularly in how he deals with racial attitudes within the black church and white Christianity’s tendency to scapegoat black Americans. Baldwin’s first novel, Go Tell It On The Mountain, and his last work to deal with the church, The Amen Corner, show figures of power within the black church who have abused their positions and betrayed those under their authority. He exposes the failure of religious power …
