The Everyday Food Practices Of Community-Dwelling Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender (Lgbt) Older Adults, Nevin Cohen, Kristen Cribbs

Publications and Research

Malnutrition during old age is a significant public health issue. Prevailing behavioral and structural senior malnutrition interventions have had marginal success, largely failing to reflect the realities of people's daily lives. This novel study employed Social Practice Theory (SPT) to explore the food practices of an under-researched, yet highly vulnerable, segment of the older adult population—Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) seniors. Four focus groups were conducted with 31 older adult clients and volunteers at a national LGBT social service and advocacy organization. Findings revealed that food practices—far from being mere expressions of individuals' choices or immutable habits—are entities composed …

Homo Faber Juvenalis: A Multidisciplinary Survey Of Children As Tool Makers/Users, David F. Lancy May 2017

Homo Faber Juvenalis: A Multidisciplinary Survey Of Children As Tool Makers/Users, David F. Lancy

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The overall goal of this paper is to derive a set of generalizations that might characterize children as tool makers/users in the earliest human societies. These generalizations will be sought from the collective wisdom of four distinct bodies of scholarship: lithic archaeology; juvenile chimps as novice tool users; recent laboratory work in human infant and child cognition, focused on objects becoming tools and; the ethnographic study of children learning their community’s tool-kit. The presumption is that this collective wisdom will yield greater insight into children’s development as tool producers and users than has been available to scholars operating within narrower …

Telepsychiatry In India - Where Do We Stand? A Comparative Review Between Global And Indian Telepsychiatry Programs, Subrata Naskar, Robin Victor, Himabrata Das, Kamal Nath

Project ECHO Bibliography

A wide discrepancy exists in India between the existing mental healthcare repertoire and the alarmingly high burden of individuals requiring immediate attention from requisite mental healthcare services. Providing equitable mental healthcare across a vast country characterized by profound cultural variations and territorial caveats has remained a major public health concern. Against this gloomy backdrop, the emergence of distant communications technology offers solace and optimism as an ingenious approach to bridge the existing gap between clients and mental health professionals. Using inexpensive equipment and basic technical knowhow, telepsychiatry expands the scope of the discipline to distant and hazy suburbs and villages …

Practical Steps For The Utilization Of Action Research In Your Organization: A Qualitative Approach For Non-Academic Research, Paul J. Antonellis Jr., Gwendolyn Berry

Management Faculty Publications

Action research is different from traditional research. Action research is more practice based as it is implementing an intervention to improve a problem. Action research involves collaboration and communication between the researcher and the participants within the study. The purpose of this article is to explain the multi-step process for a non-academic researcher or novice researcher when employing qualitative action research in an organization that is looking to solve a complex issue. The article will explore the action research steps for conducting phone employment interviews within the organization and an example of the process to follow. The outlined steps can …

Reentry Experiences Of Elderly Ex-Offenders: Wasted Lives, Charmaine Clarke

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Abstract of the Dissertation Reentry Experiences of Elderly Ex-Offenders: Wasted Lives by Charmaine Clarke Doctor of Philosophy in Social Welfare Stony Brook University 2017 In the last two decades, the growth in the number of elderly offenders age 50 and older has been significant. Between 1994 and 2011, those falling within this category increased by 330%; they are currently the fastest growing age group in the federal correctional system. A successful transition from prison to community is a formidable undertaking for elderly ex-offenders. Despite their growing numbers, there is a paucity of studies on their reentry experiences. The available literature …

Becoming Whole Again: A Qualitative Study Of Veterans' Return To Civilian Life, Katherine Mitchell May 2017

Becoming Whole Again: A Qualitative Study Of Veterans' Return To Civilian Life, Katherine Mitchell

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Veterans returning from the recent Middle East wars report struggling with a variety of transition issues related to wartime experiences and due to the socialization they received as part of their indoctrination into military life. Many veterans experience practical and emotional adjustment challenges related to experiences common to military personnel regardless of combat exposure that may not appear for months or years after separating from the military. Much of the existing research has focused on quantitative measures of veterans’ transition. There is a need for a greater qualitative research focus on understanding the subjective experience of coming home and what …

Predicting Patient Preferences For Individual Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy And The Impact Of Matching To Preference On Treatment Engagement And Therapeutic Alliance, Allison Marziliano May 2017

Predicting Patient Preferences For Individual Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy And The Impact Of Matching To Preference On Treatment Engagement And Therapeutic Alliance, Allison Marziliano

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The current study aims to identify whether demographic, disease-related, psychological, and spirituality/religiosity variables predict patients’ preference for Individual Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy (IMCP) compared to Individual Supportive Psychotherapy (ISP). In addition, this study aims to examine whether assigning patients to their preferred therapy arm impacts both their engagement with their assigned treatment in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) and their therapeutic alliance mid-way through treatment. Data for these analyses were drawn from a RCT comparing IMCP, ISP, and Enhanced Usual Care (EUC) in a sample of patients with advanced cancer. Results demonstrated that patients with higher levels of education were more likely …

Sex-Specific Associations Of Maternal Birthweight With Offspring Birthweight In The Omega Study., Collette N Ncube, Amelia R Gavin, Michelle A Williams, Chunfang Qiu, Tanya K Sorensen, Daniel A Enquobahrie

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

PURPOSE: We investigated nonlinear and offspring sex-specific associations of maternal birthweight (BW) with offspring BW among participants of the Omega study, a pregnancy cohort.

METHODS: Maternal BW was modeled as a continuous variable, linear spline and binary variable indicating low birthweight (LBW;≥2500 grams). Offspring BW was modeled as a continuous and binary variable in regression models. Nonlinearity was assessed using likelihood ratio tests (LRTs) in marginal linear spline models.

RESULTS: For every 100-gram increase of maternal BW, offspring BW increased by 22.29 (95% CI: 17.57, 27.02) or 23.41 (95% CI: 6.87, 39.96) grams among mothers with normal BW or born …

The Development Of Sexually Abusive Behavior In Adolescent Males Who Have Been Sexually Victimized, Brittany S. Sharma May 2017

The Development Of Sexually Abusive Behavior In Adolescent Males Who Have Been Sexually Victimized, Brittany S. Sharma

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The abused-abuser hypothesis posits that a history of sexual victimization may increase the risk of engaging in sexually abusive behavior for some victims. Although many researchers have discovered a higher prevalence of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) in sex offenders in comparison with non-sex offenders, less research has considered how specific characteristics of prior sexual abuse may contribute to how these individuals sexually abuse others. For the present study, archival data were collected from 243 youths receiving residential treatment for sexually abusive behavior and self-reported data were collected from university students with no known history of sexual offending. The present study …

The Echr Condemns Prison Overcrowding In Italy: The Total Reorganization Of The Institution And The Social Reintegration Of The Prisoner, Maria Garro, Federica Cirami May 2017

The Echr Condemns Prison Overcrowding In Italy: The Total Reorganization Of The Institution And The Social Reintegration Of The Prisoner, Maria Garro, Federica Cirami

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

The contribution analyses the current Italian prison system, which has been called upon on to resolve its structural problems. The Council of Europe, in fact, in 2013 condemned Italy for inhuman treatment in its prisons. The principal accusation concerns the problem of overcrowding. The country has responded with solutions such as the application of the open system, which provides cells solely for overnight stays, and dynamic monitoring, an effective system for ensuring order in the institutions. These initiatives aim to promote re-educational activities and the social re-integration of prisoners. In addition, Italian institutions have made greater use of alternatives to …

Foster Care Redesign Initiative: Every Child Matters, Natalie Russell May 2017

Foster Care Redesign Initiative: Every Child Matters, Natalie Russell

2017 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Thousands of children enter the child welfare system every year in Texas. As each year progresses, the foster care system becomes increasingly complicated and requires multiple steps prior to a successful placement. Child Protective Services (CPS) has become a broken system, leading to hundreds of foster parents who are inadequately prepared for the trauma that children in foster care have previously experienced due to abuse and neglect. Through the commitment of ACH Child and Family Services, Texas Department of Family Protective Services, and Our Community, Our Kids, significant work has been implemented to improve the lives of each child in …

Understanding Aging Well From The Perspectives Of Homebound Older Adults, Debra Lynn Rogers May 2017

Understanding Aging Well From The Perspectives Of Homebound Older Adults, Debra Lynn Rogers

Social Work Theses - Archive

With the population becoming “grayer” the United States has begun to question what it means to be aging well. Previous research has examined what it means to age well how to diminish age-related losses, although there is a lack of consensus about what this means. The older adult population is diverse regarding race, ethnicity, sex, culture, sexual orientation, and ability; thus, aging well can mean different things to different people. Due to this diversity, the subjective perspectives and experiences of older adults are important to understand the processes of aging well and expand its conceptualization to a heterogeneous population of …

Effectiveness Of Suicide Prevention Programs To Reduce Suicide Ideation And Behavior In Older Adults: A Systematic Review Of The Literature From 2009-2016, Marissa Steen Wallace

Social Work Theses - Archive

A systematic review was conducted to replicate a previous systematic review and to examine the effectiveness of various suicide prevention interventions for the older adult population. A search through 6 databases presented 7 articles that met all elibility criteria. All included articles presented interventions for adults age 60 and over that resulted in a statistically significant reduction in suicide ideation or behavior. The programs were reviewed with the GRADE protocol, which measured the quality of methods and results, and included strengths and limitations of the studies. The discussion provided implications of intervention settings and suggestions for future directions for social …

“In A Way It’S A Violation”: Pap Smear Knowledge And Beliefs Among Underserved Women In Substance Abuse Treatment, Amberly R. Prykhodko May 2017

“In A Way It’S A Violation”: Pap Smear Knowledge And Beliefs Among Underserved Women In Substance Abuse Treatment, Amberly R. Prykhodko

Social Work Theses - Archive

Due to many factors, women in substance abuse treatment are at high risk of contracting the human papillomavirus (HPV) and developing cervical cancer. Despite this, the likelihood of accessing preventative healthcare, such as a Pap exam, is low. Substance abuse treatment facilities may be suitable access points for preventative cervical cancer screening. Using secondary focus group data, this qualitative narrative analysis examines answers given by women in substance abuse treatment regarding knowledge, experiences, barriers, and facilitators to Pap exams. The purpose of this analysis was to further understand how this population views Pap smears in order to guide best practices …

A Whole New World: Exploring Coming Out Experiences Of International Students In The U.S., Rosalind M. Evans May 2017

A Whole New World: Exploring Coming Out Experiences Of International Students In The U.S., Rosalind M. Evans

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

The purpose of this study was to explore the coming out experiences of international students in the U.S. who identified on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer (LGBTQ) spectrum. Between 2015 and 2016 there was a seven percent reported increase of international students studying in the United States (U.S.) (Institute of International Education [IIE], 2016). Although there are many reports of the increase in international students studying in the U.S. over the years and their experiences of challenges and achievement there is little to no research focused on international LGBTQ students’ experiences in the U.S. Furthermore, there is limited …

Contributions To Resilience: External Protective Factors And The Adolescent Birth Experience, Christina Hamilton May 2017

Contributions To Resilience: External Protective Factors And The Adolescent Birth Experience, Christina Hamilton

2017 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Adolescent birth is a worldwide health concern. Despite efforts to decrease the rate of adolescent births, the United States has the highest among developed nations. The focus of past research has been the risks for adolescent birth and the negative impact birth has on adolescents. However, a positive birth experience can have a positive influence on outcomes for both mother and baby in adult populations. This cross-sectional study used the resiliency framework to describe the influence of support, positive infant outcomes, childbirth class attendance, and prenatal care as external protective factors on a positive rating of the birth experience among …

The Social Determinants Of Health For Pregnant And Homeless Adolescents From The Early 1900s: Lessons For Today, Kimberly Ortiz

2017 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Little is known about the care pregnant, single girls received at the Berachah Home in Arlington, TX, from 1903 to 1935. In an effort to learn from the past, this study describes how pregnant and homeless adolescents were treated socially and medically between 1900 and 1935, and how this knowledge informs current policies for homeless adolescent women. Primary and secondary historical sources were analyzed from the archives at the University of Texas Arlington, using the social determinants of health framework. Themes included financial dependence vs. independence, social stigma vs. self-esteem, social support vs. isolation, education, housing, and access to health …
