Promoting Resilience Amongst Young People Transitioning From Care To Independent Living: Experiences Of Residential Social Care Workers, Linda Cameron, Anne Hynes, Yvonne Maycock, Eileen O'Neill, Ann Marie O'Reilly

Journal of Social Care

The capacity for a young adult to develop and overcome obstacles in life underpins the concept of resilience building (Gilligan, 1997). A key role of the social care worker is to ensure that young adults growing up in the care system are afforded the best possible outcomes. This includes social care workers helping young people build their resilience in preparation for the transition into independent living and aftercare. The research reported here examines the experiences and perspectives of two residential social care workers regarding the promotion of resilience amongst young people transitioning from residential care to independent living. From analysis …

The Key Attributes Of A Successful Relationship With Service Users In Family Support: Views Of Family Support Workers, Kim Corless, Sharon Horan, Barbara Kirkpatrick, Nicola Crocker, Maura O'Donoghue, Veronika Steiner

Journal of Social Care

Existing research on family support suggests that key to the family’s engagement and satisfaction is the family’s perception of the quality of the relationship established with their assigned support worker (McArthur & Thompson, 2011; Mason, 2012). The research reported here explores the views of the other partner in this relationship, the family support worker. Two experienced family support workers were interviewed about their views of what where the key attributes of a successful relationship with the families they worked with. The data was thematically analysed and three themes identified. There were overcoming barriers; skills needed to build a successful working …

The Role Of Self-Awareness And Reflection In Social Care Practice, Aoife Greene Aug 2017

The Role Of Self-Awareness And Reflection In Social Care Practice, Aoife Greene

Journal of Social Care

This study examined social care workers’ understanding of self-awareness and reflection, the impact of reflection on their practice, and the factors which support and/or impede reflection in their practice. Given the limited evidence base in general on the use of reflection in social care practice, this qualitative study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by exploring the role of self-awareness and reflection in social care practice among a small group of social care practitioners in Ireland. The study included interviews with seven social care workers who were pursuing a postgraduate qualification in social care practice. The main findings indicate …

The Impact Of Intergenerational Projects On The Younger Person's View Of Older People, Ian Mcnamara

Journal of Social Care

Intergenerational projects and activities have become popular among both youth and senior citizen groups across Ireland. These programmes fill a variety of personal and societal needs as our society becomes increasingly age-segregated. This study examined the impact of intergenerational projects on a group of six girls aged 15 to 16 living in the west of Ireland. It explores preconceptions and changes in views towards older people, as well as personal impacts. All participants were members of a local youth group and had taken part in two intergenerational projects at a local nursing home. The first project involved working with residents …

A Meta-Analysis Of The Effect Of Therapist Experience On Outcome For Clients With Internalizing Disorders, Lucia M. Walsh Aug 2017

A Meta-Analysis Of The Effect Of Therapist Experience On Outcome For Clients With Internalizing Disorders, Lucia M. Walsh

Open Access Theses

Despite having the most prevalent group of psychiatric disorders, many people with internalizing disorders do not receive treatment. One factor related to lack of treatment is a shortage of qualified mental health therapists. Task shifting may be one solution to this shortage, but has been relatively unused due to the idea that less experienced therapists may not be able to attain commiserate client outcomes as more experienced therapists. However, a relationship between therapist experience and client internalizing outcomes has never been found, a critical first step in determining if task shifting is a viable option to getting millions of people …

Statewide Child Development Account Policies: Key Design Elements, Margaret M. Clancy, Sondra G. Beverly Aug 2017

Statewide Child Development Account Policies: Key Design Elements, Margaret M. Clancy, Sondra G. Beverly

Center for Social Development Research

Child Development Accounts (CDAs) aim to build assets for postsecondary education. Unlike many asset-building programs, CDAs were explicitly conceived to be universal (every child is included) and progressive (greater support for disadvantaged children). Four states have created statewide CDAs—Baby Scholars in Connecticut, the Harold Alfond College Challenge in Maine, College Kick Start in Nevada, and CollegeBoundbaby in Rhode Island. In this policy report, we describe these CDAs to provide perspective and inform new initiatives. We begin by identifying 10 key CDA policy design elements originally modeled by the CDA in the SEED for Oklahoma Kids experiment. By modeling key design …

Risky Sexual Behavior And Knowledge Of Hiv/Aids Transmission In A Community Sample: Sexual Orientation, Race, And Gender, Dustin K. Shepler, Kevin P. Johnson, Alicia A. Width Aug 2017

Risky Sexual Behavior And Knowledge Of Hiv/Aids Transmission In A Community Sample: Sexual Orientation, Race, And Gender, Dustin K. Shepler, Kevin P. Johnson, Alicia A. Width

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

New cases of HIV/AIDS are disproportionately diagnosed among men who identify as lesbian, gay, and bisexual and Black. Reasons for this disparity may be related to differences in knowledge of how HIV/AIDS is transmitted and differences in willingness to engage in risky sexual behaviors. In this study, we examined whether differences in knowledge of HIV/AIDS transmission and engagement in risky sexual behaviors differed among men and women; lesbian, gay, and bisexual and heterosexual people; and White and Black people. Findings indicate knowledge of HIV/AIDS transmission was not related to sexual orientation or gender; however, White participants had higher scores on …

An Examination Of The Content Of And Engagement In Ongoing Consultation Following Training In Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Ashley M. Smith Aug 2017

An Examination Of The Content Of And Engagement In Ongoing Consultation Following Training In Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Ashley M. Smith

Open Access Dissertations

The inclusion of ongoing consultation following EBP training in implementation efforts has been shown to enhance the uptake of EBPs into systems of care. Yet, little is known about the types of questions and concerns raised by providers during consultation and methods used by consultants to address those concerns. In addition, it is often difficult to get providers to engage in consultation. The present study examined content and consultative methods during consultation following training in TF-CBT, as part of a community-based learning collaborative (CBLC) to implement TF-CBT for youth served in the child welfare system. Minute-to-minute live coding of consultation …

Public Sociology, Laura Nichols Aug 2017

Public Sociology, Laura Nichols

Sociology

Public sociology refers to the application and uses of sociology beyond the academy. The term has been used very broadly to describe any sociological theory, methods, research findings, or commentary by sociologists that are consumed (and, ideally, used) by non-sociologists. Its central aim is "to correct - that is, to make better, social conditions for the betterment of humanity" (Hanemaayer and Schneider 2014: 5). Public sociology has also been referred to more specifically as an approach sociologists use to participate in public discussions about social issues as "public intellectuals" (Burawoy 2005).

This chapter focuses on public sociology in its broadest …

A Moment Became The Season: An Exploration Of Trauma Narrative Within The Community Development Context, Lydia Berry Aug 2017

A Moment Became The Season: An Exploration Of Trauma Narrative Within The Community Development Context, Lydia Berry

Sustainability and Social Justice

This research explores current methods of psychological trauma intervention within the community development context, namely the understandings that bound the clinical and diagnostic side of trauma, and the more recent victim centered approach: the trauma informed care method. The shortcomings of these approaches is that they individually lack the ability to establish the victim back into their sense of self or community, accordingly. This research argues that a narrative approach, a process by which a survivor of trauma has full agency to express their experience, used in conjunction with existing practices can rectify the shortcomings of both methods. The researcher …

Dropped In Without A Parachute: Library Managers’ Supervision Experiences, Simon Funge, Audrey Robinson-Nkongola, Laura Delancey, Austin G. Griffiths Aug 2017

Dropped In Without A Parachute: Library Managers’ Supervision Experiences, Simon Funge, Audrey Robinson-Nkongola, Laura Delancey, Austin G. Griffiths

Social Work Faculty Publications

A survey of U.S. library managers explored the relationship between their social identities, experiences supervising others, support from others, and their overall satisfaction in their professional role. The literature provides evidence that demographic differences give rise to challenges in the workplace. Though no statistically significant differences were found between minority and nonminority managers related to supervisees' microaggressive behaviors, written commentary provided evidence of these and other supervision challenges. A regression analysis found that supervisees' behaviors, along with a manager's age, were significant predictors of their satisfaction as a supervisor. Recommendations for further research and implications for libraries emerge from these …

Providing Equitable Access To Education For African American Students: The Journey Of One Administrative Team, John P. Raimondo

Dissertations

This study explored the journey of one administrative team in a Midwestern suburban high school in their efforts to provide equitable access to education for African American students. It examined the high school administrative processes, and the perceived impacts of these processes in identifying, addressing and removing the institutional barriers to academic success for African American students. I focused on an initiative developed by members of this administrative team that is an intervention designed specifically for African American students and articulated as such. As both an insider to this school’s administrative team and a veteran administrator, and as an outsider …

What Works For Whom? Military Sexual Trauma Vs. Campus Sexual Assault Survivors And The Effectiveness Of Therapeutic Approaches; A Systematic Review And Comparison., Daphne Jaguar Browell

Social Work Theses - Archive

There are few data comparing military sexual trauma (MST) to civilian sexual trauma; however, there is some anecdotal evidence that MST is unique and may be associated with different mental health outcomes. This may be attributed to the distinct characteristics of MST, including the environment in which the trauma takes place and traits of the perpetrator and the survivor; however, on closer inspection these characteristics are not inimitable and many parallels can be seen when compared with campus sexual assault. While there are studies on the effectiveness of specific interventions, there has not been a systematic review comparing the different …

Exploring The Caregiver-Child Relationship In Institutional Care Facilities In South Sudan, Jennifer Joy Telfer Aug 2017

Exploring The Caregiver-Child Relationship In Institutional Care Facilities In South Sudan, Jennifer Joy Telfer

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Institutional care for children separated from parents is expanding in Africa, but little research exists on caregiving at these institutions. This study explores the caregiver-child relationship in two residential institutions in South Sudan by investigating how caregivers experience their role and how children experience their lives in the institution. Semi- structured interviews assessed 14 caregivers’ backgrounds, parenting experience, attitudes, education, and motivations. The Orphans and Vulnerable Children Wellbeing Tool (OWT) assessed 98 adolescent residents, who also gave feedback about their answers. Caregivers employ parenting styles used by their parents and report treating non-relative children the same as biological children. Children …

The Student Consumer: What Does Adding A Price Tag To Your Postsecondary Degree Do For You?, Allison Printz

Senior Theses

In contrast with the rest of the world, Student Affair at public universities are much more prevalent in the United States. Other countries are making efforts to begin and/or improve resources offered to students, introducing the concept more and more. One nation that has very limited exposure to the concept of Student Affairs is Germany. They focus mainly on providing instruction for a smaller number of students and research resources. This could be because the higher education is paid for by the state, which removes the student from being the consumer. In order to compare how a student can benefit …

Substance Use Disorders, Violence, Mental Health, And Hiv: Differentiating A Syndemic Factor By Gender And Sexuality, Kiyomi Tsuyuki, Eileen V. Pitpitan, Maria A. Levi-Minzi, Lianne A. Urada, Steven P. Kurtz, Jamila K. Stockman, Hilary L. Surratt

Center for Health Services Research Faculty Publications

This paper measures syndemic substance use disorder, violence, and mental health and compares the syndemic among HIV-infected heterosexual men, heterosexual women, and men who have sex with men (MSM). Data were from a sample of high needs substance-using, HIV-infected people in South Florida between 2010 and 2012 (n = 481). We used confirmatory factor analysis to measure a syndemic latent variable and applied measurement invariance models to identify group differences in the data structure of syndemic co-morbidities among heterosexual men, heterosexual women, and MSM. We found that variables used to measure the syndemic fit each sub-group, supporting that substance use …
