Reports & Documents
In New Mexico, 58% of college students experience some form of food insecurity. The College Food Insecurity Project—conducted by the University of New Mexico’s Division of Prevention and Population Sciences with support from the New Mexico Health Care Authority and USDA SNAP-Ed—examined how campus food pantries address student food needs across the state. Using a mixed-methods design, the study included semi-structured interviews with food pantry coordinators and staff at 13 institutions of higher education, on-site assessments using the Nutrition Environment Food Pantry Assessment Tool Plus (NEFPAT+), and content analysis of 15 college food pantry websites.
Findings revealed that campus …

Obesity Vs. Overweight Status: Differential Predictions To Poly-Substance Use In Young Adulthood, H. Isabella Lanza, Kailey Waller, Lalaine Sevillano
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background:
Though past research has identified links between higher weight status and substance use in young adulthood, prospective studies are scarce and mixed, the role of higher weight status on vaping is less clear, and little empirical work has examined differences between obesity vs. overweight on poly-substance use. The current study assessed the role of weight status on poly-substance use trajectories across young adulthood.Methods1,303 young adults (20.5 ± 2.3 years; 63% female; 41% Latina/o/x, 30% Asian-American/Asian, 18% Caucasian/White) from a public, urban university were surveyed at six-month intervals from spring 2021 (W1) to spring 2023 (W5). Weight status was measured …

A Descriptive Study Of Black College Students’ Perceptions Of Law Enforcement After Police Brutality, Alisia L. Collins
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Police brutality is a social issue that has tormented the mental health of the Black community for decades. Seeing brethren battered and bruised countless times has taken an emotional toll on the relationship of the Black community with the American justice system and the officers meant to uphold it. Previous research has shown that the Black community primarily has a negative perception of law enforcement because of factors like police brutality, unjustified shootings, and legal policies within the justice system. Compounding experiences can occur for people with disabilities within the Black community. Specifically, autistic people have a higher risk of …

Mentoring programs are popular interventions to support holistic development for young people. One specific model of mentoring that has emerged over the past few decades in the United States is professional mentoring. Research has illustrated that this model of mentoring may be particularly helpful for young people who could benefit from extra support in their lives that a volunteer mentoring program does not have the capacity to provide. Despite the emerging utilization of professional mentoring programs, little is known about the ideal characteristics of a professional mentor and young people's experiences in these professional mentoring programs. This study interviewed 12 …

Immigrant Catholics’ Perspectives And Engagement On Climate Crisis, Tison Vadakkekudiyil Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In this generic qualitative study, how immigrant Catholics in the United States make sense of climate change and environmental justice was examined, addressing a critical gap in understanding how faith and cultural identity shape environmental engagement among marginalized communities. Guided by sensemaking theory and the Catholic principle of integral ecology, as outlined in Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’, the research question addressed how church-going immigrant Catholics in Maryland perceive and engage with the climate crisis, considering their religious beliefs and concerns for environmental justice. Seventeen first-and second-generation adult immigrants participated in semistructured interviews, and data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s …
Clinicians’ Perceptions Of Restorative Justice And Community-Based Intervention Programs For Juvenile Offenders, Jacque Timberlake
Clinicians’ Perceptions Of Restorative Justice And Community-Based Intervention Programs For Juvenile Offenders, Jacque Timberlake
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The main goals of restorative justice and community-based intervention programs include reducing reoffending behavior, successful reintegration, and yielding greater satisfaction among participants. Although clinicians play a vital role in conducting rehabilitation methods for youth offenders, the problem was a lack of literature that explored clinicians’ perceptions of implementing more effective alternatives such as restorative justice and community-based intervention programs. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore clinicians’ perceptions of administering rehabilitative interventions for youth offenders, specifically in reducing recidivism, adequately addressing mental health concerns, and evaluating overall program effectiveness. The risk-need responsivity model and the good lives …

The Institutional Role Of Journalism In Post-Conflict Societies: The Case Of Kosovo, Ferid Selimi
The Institutional Role Of Journalism In Post-Conflict Societies: The Case Of Kosovo, Ferid Selimi
UBT International Conference
This study asserts that the traditional professional values underpinning journalism are becoming increasingly ambiguous, while established normative frameworks have diminished in their descriptive influence. Drawing on Hanitzsch’s (2011) typology of journalistic cultures, the research analyzes responses from a structured survey of 46 media professionals. Through the application of the Priority Model, the study explores how these professional role orientations intersect with neo-Gramscian perspectives on hegemony, particularly in shaping journalists’ priorities during the production and dissemination of news. The research investigates the institutional roles of journalistic cultures within Kosovo, with a specific focus on their evolving engagement in broader societal responsibilities …

Navigating The Transition: A Study Of Faculty Experiences With Institutional And Collegial Support, Lorri S. Mcmeel, Felicia Murray
Social Work Department Faculty Conferences
Faculty in higher education, especially in applied disciplines like social work, are expected to excel in teaching, research, service, and collegiality. Despite these demands, formal preparation for new faculty is often limited. This qualitative study explored the experiences of 36 full-time faculty members in social work and related disciplines regarding their preparedness for academic roles. Using an exploratory approach and thematic analysis, four themes emerged: (1) Mentorship and Professional Support, (2) Institutional Training and Resources, (3) Self-Directed Learning and Adaptation, and (4) Challenges and Barriers to Preparation. Findings revealed inconsistent onboarding, limited mentorship, and a reliance on self-navigation, with disparities …

“From Bars To Becoming”: Exploring Identity Change Across Prison Programming, Evan W. Saunders
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Self-identity plays a pivotal role in one’s day-to-day life, impacting their behaviors and ambitions, but what is conducive to a change in identity is often underdeveloped. Mechanisms that lead incarcerated individuals to both a shift in identity and desistance away from crime are both underdeveloped as well. The current study examines the impact of programming on identity and the relationship between identity and recidivism. A sample of individuals participating in a reentry prison program responded to 16 statements that evaluated their perceptions of their Overall Self-Identity, Current Self, Feared Self, and Positive Possible Self at the beginning and end of …
