Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide. The complexity of cancer care demands strong interprofessional collaboration (IPC), particularly within cancer patient navigator (CPN) programmes. However, research examining IPC in the context of CPN implementation is still limited. This scoping review aims to explore the various roles of healthcare workers in the IPC process within cancer navigator programme interventions. The review was conducted using four databases: PubMed, Clinical Key, EBSCOhost, and ScienceDirect. The Arksey and O'Malley framework was used to address the research question: “What is the role of health workers in interprofessional collaboration within cancer patient navigation?” Study selection …

In search of the best approach to eradicating homelessness in underdeveloped countries with large populations, we conducted interviews with professionals involved in different models of helping the unhoused. Although it has been established that the Housing First model combined with human services is the best model to end homelessness, the cost of housing might be prohibitive for many national governments. In situations where governments are over-whelmed by the numbers of homeless people, communities and organizations develop specific methods and practices to meet the needs of unhoused individuals. For the purpose of this paper, phenomenological research was undertaken to learn how …

Introduction
In 2014, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invested in the Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative to enhance diversity in the biomedical research workforce. As one of ten grantees nationwide, the BUILD EXITO project at Portland State University established an institutionally and geographically diverse consortium including local community colleges, a research-intensive medical institution, and universities and community colleges around the Pacific Rim. The goal of this collaboration was to support comprehensive research training for undergraduates from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the biomedical workforce. This manuscript aims to provide insights into creating and sustaining a large-scale multi-institutional consortium.MethodsUsing …
The Criminalization Of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (Dmst) Survivors, Mackenzie Zimmerman
The Criminalization Of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (Dmst) Survivors, Mackenzie Zimmerman
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
The Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) defines sex trafficking as the “recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act.” When the trafficking involves resident minors within the United States, the act is referred to as domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST). However, because DMST enmeshment often involves elements of criminal activity, a minor may be implicated as a recruiter in friend-type trafficking, and a third-party trafficker is not required to constitute sex trafficking involving minors, the designation of “survivor” or “criminal” remains complicated in many cases. Due to these blurred lines between …

Barriers And Facilitators To Accessing Addiction Treatment Services For Sexual Minority (Lgbq+) People: Systematic Review, Miriam Hillyard, Beatrice Cockbain, Colin Drummond, Katharine Rimes, Emmert Roberts
School of Psychology
Background Sexual minority (lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer and other non-heterosexual) people experience significant disparities in addiction problems compared with heterosexual people. Aims We aimed to answer the question, what are the barriers and facilitators to accessing drug/alcohol addiction treatment services for sexual minority adults?’. Method A systematic review was conducted by searching Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Sociological Abstracts for any English-language primary research article (qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods) relevant to the study aims, from inception up to 18 April 2025. Quality of included studies was assessed using the Mixed-Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT-2018). Barriers and facilitators were …

Mental Health In Rural School-Age Youth: Examining Trends In Adverse Childhood Experiences, Positive Childhood Experiences, And Family Resilience From 2018-2023, Mary Katherine Shires
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This study examined trends in adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), positive childhood experiences (PCEs), family resilience, and mental health conditions in rural and urban youth in the United States from 2018-2023. It also assessed whether PCEs and family resilience moderated the association between ACEs and youth mental health and whether these relationships differed by geographic setting and across time. Data were drawn from six years (2018-2023) of the National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH), a nationally representative, cross-sectional, caregiver-reported survey assessing child wellbeing. The analytic sample included school-age youth (ages 6-17) residing in states that reported metropolitan (urban) versus non-metropolitan (rural) …

"I Know Who I Am": Gender-Creative Children Draw-And-Tell Their Social And Healthcare Experiences, Eline L. Lenne, Ben Anderson-Nathe, Christina J. Sun, Martha Driessnack
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Gender-creative children have an elevated risk of healthcare avoidance and adverse health outcomes related to stigma and discrimination. Despite evidence that family affirmation is protective and pediatric providers influence care outcomes, young children’s perspectives related to their social support and clinical experiences remain underrepresented in health research. Indeed, children’s agency has been historically restricted in healthcare and health research. This community-engaged, artsbased, qualitative study used Draw-and-Tell Conversations—a participatory approach combining drawing, storytelling, and writing—with 12U.S.-based gender-creative children (ages 5–10). Although children’s caregivers completed surveys to contextualize findings, the project highlighted children’s capacity to report on their own experiences. Data were …

(W)Holistic Approaches: Empowering The Whole Of Child, Annette Johnson, Tiarnah Hamlin, Jack Lundie-Jenkins, Erin King, Karen Malyon, Jennifer Cartmel
International Journal of Playwork Practice
Holistic approaches are an evolving pedagogy in the Outside of School Hours Care (OSHC) sector that, despite its recognised value, remain an elusive practice for many educators. This ambiguity has been acknowledged in My Time Our Place (MTOP): Framework for School Age Care in Australia 2.0 (AGDE, 2022). In alignment with this process, the ability for OSHC and extended learning to empower children’s self-identities is fundamental to supporting their holistic development. In a world emerging from the coronavirus pandemic, the ongoing impacts on children – the result of physical separation and societal stressors – cannot be ignored. Accordingly, the child’s …
When Ai Writes The Doctoral Thesis: Reclaiming The Oral Defence As A Learning Development Intervention, Valerie A. Storey
When Ai Writes The Doctoral Thesis: Reclaiming The Oral Defence As A Learning Development Intervention, Valerie A. Storey
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Large language models have fundamentally challenged traditional methods of verifying doctoral competency as AI-generated text becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from human scholarship. This paper argues that thesis committees and doctoral supervisors must reclaim the oral defence as a critical checkpoint for assessing authentic threshold crossing rather than a ceremonial rite of passage. Drawing on historical examples from medieval oral disputations through to the rise of written theses, this paper asserts the necessity of returning to rigorous oral assessment. Given the limitations of detection technologies and the growing use of AI in thesis writing, oral defences must move from confirmatory …

Qualitative Analysis Of Emotion Schemes Theory Of Compassion Satisfaction In Emotion - Focused Therapy, Bronislava Šoková, Lenka Janík Blašková, Katarína Greškovičová, Júlia Halamová
The Qualitative Report
There is little to no research focused on the qualitative understanding of compassion satisfaction among helping professionals, despite the demanding nature of the profession. Our aim was to examine how helping professionals experience compassion satisfaction through the lens of emotion scheme theory applied in emotion-focused therapy. Eight helping professionals were randomly selected from the pool of 29 participants representing a convenience sample, with the age range from 20 to 44 years. Data were collected via online in-depth interviews with open-ended questions concerning emotion scheme of their intense experience of compassion satisfaction. To analyze the data, phenomenology and consensual qualitative analysis …

Background: Firearm secure storage (ie, storing firearms unloaded and locked) is recommended to reduce unintentional injuries and suicides. However, the relationship between psychological states, such as social isolation, and firearm secure storage practices is under-researched.
Methods: Data are from 7136 individuals with firearms in their households from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Multinomial logistic regression was used to explore the relationship between social isolation and firearm storage.
Results: Among respondents, 71.6% reported storing firearms unloaded, 14.2% stored firearms loaded and locked and 14.2% stored firearms loaded and unlocked. Most respondents reported feeling 'never' (40.7%) or 'rarely' (33.3%) socially …
Experiences Of Child Life Specialists Who Identify As Queer, Tori Hinton
Experiences Of Child Life Specialists Who Identify As Queer, Tori Hinton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Previous research shows that queer professionals experience underrepresentation, discrimination, harassment in the workplace (Kinitz et al., 2024; Ellsworth et al., 2020; Schatz & O’Hanlan, 1994; Eliason et al., 2011a; Katz-Wise et al., 2021). Across healthcare and psychosocial professions, queer professionals report discrimination, identity concealment, isolation and fears of professional repercussions related to disclosure. Such experiences are associated with decreased job satisfaction, increased stress, and barriers to career advancement (Cancela et al., 2024). Existing research on diverse child life specialists is limited and no published studies focus specifically on the experiences of queer child life specialists. One study by Gourley and …

Indigenous Peoples experience severe health inequities rooted in experiences of colonization. Calls for strengths-based, culturally grounded research and practice to redress these harms continue to grow. This systematic review assesses how Indigenous "culture" has been quantified in research across the globe over a 10-year span. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched four databases (2013-2023) for peer-reviewed, English-language articles featuring quantitative measures of Indigenous culture as a positive/protective factor. Data were extracted via a double coding system to assess cultural domains, operationalization strategies, and sociodemographic characteristics of reviewed studies. We reviewed 279 records and identified 461 measures, 289 of which were unique. …
The Power Of Beliefs: Cognitive Pathways Linking Mental Health Literacy To Psychological Distress, Katherine Elise Kirsch
The Power Of Beliefs: Cognitive Pathways Linking Mental Health Literacy To Psychological Distress, Katherine Elise Kirsch
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Mental health disorders are prevalent in children and adolescents, and they are accompanied by challenges throughout the lifespan. Mental health literacy (MHL) provides a flexible framework to address child and adolescent mental health. Identifying significant relationships between MHL and mental health outcomes has the potential to inform successful interventions. This study uses a secondary analysis of data gathered for the Study on Attitudes of Adolescents and Young Adults Toward Relevant Health Issues to isolate MHL belief domains that significantly effect psychological distress levels in adolescents.
The Swiss Youth Mental Health Literacy and Stigma Survey was used to assess the MHL, …

Exploring The Experiences Of Dually-Involved Youth, Benjamin T. Wilkerson, April Terry
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Research surrounding dually-involved youth (justice system and child welfare) and their connection to crime has increased exponentially in recent years. Contemporary research indicates that the experiences of dual system-involved youth represent a complex phenomenon. Certain characteristics can moderate the likelihood of delinquency and offending for youth concurrently involved in both systems. Notably, however, these correlations may not be as direct or significant as prior research has illustrated. The purpose of this poster is to expose a general snapshot of the research on this possible connection. This poster presents the evolution of research on this subject, discusses casual risk factors, and …

Introduction
Inner-city neighborhoods, such as those in Philadelphia, vary in demographics, resources, access, safety, and overall health. Local non-profits that serve these communities require more understanding of the areas they serve to efficiently align resources and meet the local community needs. Community partnerships, including youth in the community, are key informants as they share lived experiences, navigate neighborhood conditions, and identify barriers and priorities.

Beyond Words: Supporting Nonverbal Autistic Preschoolers With Exceptional Cognitive Abilities, Dawn Timms
Knowledge and Creativity Expo
This project explores how caregivers can support autistic preschoolers who are nonverbal yet demonstrate advanced cognitive abilities. Grounded in communication theory and neurodiversity‑affirming practice, it reframes communication as a shared, relational process that extends beyond spoken language. Drawing from interdisciplinary research, I created a strengths‑based caregiver communication toolkit that translates complex theory into clear, practical strategies families can use in everyday routines. This work honors the intelligence of children whose thinking outpaces their speech and equips caregivers with tools that make communication more accessible, responsive, and affirming.

Literacies Practices In The Disciplines, Emily Skinner
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Building on Conley's (2014) work, I conducted an inquiry with disciplinary specialists across the college campus to learn about disciplinary literacies and to create a corpus of resources to use in my teaching. I interviewed disciplinary faculty in math, English, science, and history. I then edited 30-60 minute interviews down to 12-15 minute videos focused on what I determined would be most helpful to preparing middle grades and secondary teachers. Students viewed and then connected teaching strategies they had learned about in the course to the literacy practices of the disciplines. Their final project was a narrated digital presentation video …

This article examines the positive impact of an exercise in which a group of pre-service teachers enrolled in a cultural diversity course at a Midwestern University deconstructed the contents of a video to better understand how culturally responsive teaching can significantly impact the teaching learning process especially with marginalized student populations. Preservice teachers were required to watch a video on culturally responsive teaching and engage in a "free write" based on the contents of the video. After that, students were asked to respond to two prompts based on content from the video. Data analysis from their "free writes," prompts responses, …

Classroom Management Scenarios: From Theory To Practice, William Gary Cole
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
This article presents a powerful and engrossing method for engaging pre-service teachers in meaningful discussions about classroom management. The author details the use of perspective-taking scenarios, which are short vignettes based on real-life classroom management dilemmas faced by teachers. Processes for encouraging deep, transformative discussions and tips for writing classroom management scenarios are described. The author postulates that pre-service teachers can become more confident and capable classroom managers by hosting lively and wide-ranging discussions about actions to take when faced with specific classroom management situations.

Mentor Teacher Feedback: Escaping The “Good Job” Trap In Clinical Practicums, Karlin Burks
Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina
Becoming a mentor teacher is a rite of passage for most veteran teachers and is one many volunteer for as a way to give back to the profession. Although mentor teachers are eager and committed to the task of mentoring teacher candidates, far too many are ill-equipped for the evaluative nature of the role. Teaching is a profession that demands pedagogical competence, and that training and evaluation begins in the field experience, which is one of the most important elements of teacher preparation programs (Clift & Brady, 2005). Accordingly, feedback is ranked as one of the most important and desirable …
