The Politics Of Owing: Accounting, Water Disconnection, And Austerity Urbanism In Detroit, Melissa Heil Jan 2022

The Politics Of Owing: Accounting, Water Disconnection, And Austerity Urbanism In Detroit, Melissa Heil

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

With the rise of austerity urbanism, contemporary urban governance has been described as “rule by accountancy.” Yet the intricacies of accounting practice have been underexplored in the austerity urbanism literature. Drawing on insights from critical accounting studies, I interrogate accounting practices as political exercises that draw people and institutions into ties of obligation (accountability), shape social relations, and structure the conditions of urban life. Through this lens, practices of accounting can be understood not just as a technocratic tool of the financialized state, but as a contested terrain of urban political struggle. Examining the case of austerity-driven water service disconnections …

The Association Between Maternal Attachment Quality And Symptoms Of Anxiety In Mexican American Adolescents, Kathryn Joy Steininger Jan 2022

The Association Between Maternal Attachment Quality And Symptoms Of Anxiety In Mexican American Adolescents, Kathryn Joy Steininger

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Hispanic youth have been recognized as a large population struggling with mental illness. There has been little investigation surrounding the relationship between Hispanic adolescents and anxious tendencies, despite being the second highest population experiencing symptoms. The current study aims to explain the prevalence of symptoms of anxiety in Mexican American adolescents by examining maternal attachment quality. Data from a sample of 432 Mexican American adolescents from the ages of 13 to 21 was analyzed to determine the relationship between maternal attachment quality and symptoms of anxiety. Adolescents demonstrated greater symptoms of anxiety when they had lower maternal attachment quality. After …

Working With Others In The Mentoring Relationship System, Thomas E. Keller Jan 2022

Working With Others In The Mentoring Relationship System, Thomas E. Keller

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

A mentoring relationship typically doesn’t operate in isolation. Even youth who want or need additional support from a mentor are bound to have many other important people in their lives, such as parents and other caregivers, siblings, teachers, and peers. Consequently, a mentor already may have or may need to establish relationships with other people in the mentee’s network of support. Because these other individuals, and a mentor’s interactions with them, have the potential to enhance or detract from the mentoring experience, they are all important parts of the “mentoring relationship system.”

This chapter outlines important considerations for how to …

Intervention Development To Improve Foster Youth Mental Health By Targeting Coping Self-Efficacy And Help-Seeking, Jennifer Blakeslee, Brianne H. Kothari, Rebecca Miller

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study articulates the iterative development of an intervention called Strengthening Youth Networks and Coping (SYNC), which is designed to target coping self-efficacy and help-seeking intentions and behaviors among youth in foster care. The overarching goal is to design an intervention that will be a feasible and acceptable enhancement to existing child welfare services, and that will address modifiable determinants among adolescents involved in child welfare system that are related to elevated risk for mental health challenges, limited support network capacity, and service disengagement after exiting foster care. In this paper, we describe our initial needs assessment, explain how we …

Systems Engineering Faculty Works

A new process called Lean Healthcare Systems Engineering (LHSE) recently invented for improving healthcare workflows and designing new care is reviewed and compared to previous quality initiatives: PDSA, TQM, Six Sigma, Lean, Theory of Constraints, and several others. LHSE is applicable to workflow improvement or new care design projects in clinical environments, including hospitals, operating suites, emergency departments, clinics, imaging and clinical laboratories, pharmacies, population health, and telemedicine. LHSE integrates the strengths of Lean Six Sigma and Systems Engineering (SE). Lean’s overarching philosophy of “do what is necessary to deliver the value and reject everything else as waste” governed the …

Fast Forward, Addressing Neurotrauma & Its Long-Term Influence On Post-Injury Outcomes: A Pilot Study To Support The Need For A Student-Run Center, Alyse C. Giallorenzo

OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"Data indicates in Hampden County approximately 54% of residents live in healthcare professional shortage areas, a portion of which are living with a physical, cognitive, or developmental disability (United States Census Bureau, 2017; Baystate Franklin Medical Center Community Health Needs Assessment,2019). The Neurotrauma population faces adverse disruptions to life circumstances, functional status, meaningful roles and occupations, and personal aspirations as a result of injury. Although numerous neurotrauma survivors are faced with lifelong disability post-injury, there are limited specialized and affordable continued care services to support future outcomes specifically, occupational engagement, community reintegration, and self-concept."

A Mixed Methods Study On The Efficacy Of An Ergonomics Training Program With Direct Care Workers In Home Health, Allison Hemmer Jan 2022

A Mixed Methods Study On The Efficacy Of An Ergonomics Training Program With Direct Care Workers In Home Health, Allison Hemmer

OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"Direct care workers (DCWs) have little training on lifting, transferring, and repositioning their clients safely, which leads to injuries (Zontek, et al., 2009). A DCW may include a certified nursing assistant (CNA), home health aide (HHA) and personal care assistant (PCA). The focus of this research is to determine the efficacy of an ergonomics training program entitled Ergonomics Training at Work (E.T. at Work) via a pre and post survey. The efficacy of the program was determined by the knowledge of best practice techniques and overall confidence level when lifting, transferring, or repositioning a client prior to and after the …

The Efficacy Of An Educational Program On Home Dwelling Senior Citizens Aged 65+, Kayla Just

OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"By 2030, 20% of the population will consist of adults aged 65+(CDC, 2021). 87% of these individuals intend to age in their home and avoid displacement (Davis 2021). This increase in aging population and desire to age in place requires preparation due to an impending increase in need for healthcare, caregivers, and accessible homes. This study encompasses the efficacy of an aging in place educational program on home dwelling senior citizens, presented to four senior centers. 18 participants aged 74-86 completed a pre and post survey, respectively before and after watching an evidence based educational program on aging in place. …

Visual Communication Design Collaboration With Occupational Therapy To Create Health Literacy Projects For Community Needs, Elizabeth Shirrell, Daniel Verbit, Monique C. Chabot Jan 2022

Visual Communication Design Collaboration With Occupational Therapy To Create Health Literacy Projects For Community Needs, Elizabeth Shirrell, Daniel Verbit, Monique C. Chabot

Kanbar College Faculty Papers

Low levels of health literacy directly correlate to increased mortality rates, decreased health outcomes and overall poorer quality of life. Many social determinants of health can place someone at a higher risk of low health literacy and the negative consequences of decreased skills in this area. Health literacy is a complex task that requires a multi-modal approach and interventions within a variety of spheres of influence in someone’s life. To address this issue in underinvested communities within their own city, teams of Visual Communication Design and Occupational Therapy students, with the support of their faculty and a librarian, worked together …

Collective Cognitive Capital, Emily R. Murphy Jan 2022

Collective Cognitive Capital, Emily R. Murphy

Faculty Scholarship

This Article calls for a new project for law and neuroscience. It outlines a structural, not individual, application of brain and behavioral science that is aligned with the general goal of basic science research: improving the lives of citizens with a better un- derstanding of the human experience. It asks brain and behavioral science to move explicitly into public policy territory, and specifically onto ground more traditionally occupied by economists—but in ways the project of “behavioral economics” has not yet ventured. Put sim- ply, policy analysts should focus on brains—“collective cognitive capital”—with the same intensity with which they focus on …

Development And Validation Of The Short Version Of The Sense Of Humor Scale (Shs-S), Sonja Heintz, Willibald Ruch, Chloe Lau, Donald H. Saklofske, Paul Mcghee

School of Psychology

Abstract. Humor training has become increasingly popular to enhance the “sense of humor” and well-being and to decrease depressive symptoms. Despite the wide applications of these training programs, the assessment of training efficacy has attracted less attention. The Sense of Humor Scale (SHS; McGhee, 1996 , 1999 ) recently was expanded to a long version (SHS-L) to enhance its internal consistency ( Ruch & Heintz, 2018 ). At the same time, there is also the need for a brief version of this scale. The purpose of the present study is to develop a short version (SHS-S) in both German- and …

Recent articles have highlighted the importance of incorporating implementation science concepts into pandemic-related research. However, limited research has been documented to date regarding implementation outcomes that may be unique to COVID-19 vaccinations and how to utilize implementation strategies to address vaccine program-related implementation challenges. To address these gaps, we formed a global COVID-19 implementation workgroup of implementation scientists who met weekly for over a year to review the available literature and learn about ongoing research during the pandemic. We developed a hierarchy to prioritize the applicability of "lessons learned" from the vaccination-related implementation literature. We identified applications of existing implementation …

Older Adults And Suicide As Examined Through The Lens Of Joiner's Interpersonal Theory Of Suicide, Pamela Holmes Jan 2022

Older Adults And Suicide As Examined Through The Lens Of Joiner's Interpersonal Theory Of Suicide, Pamela Holmes

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Older adults face the highest rates of suicide of all age groups. The older adult population is not a homogenous group, and each age range—young old, middle old, and oldest old—has specific risk factors. Although Joiner’s interpersonal theory of suicide (IPTS) has been deemed valid among these age groups, it has not been specifically researched in older adults in each older age range. Due to lack of research and low reporting rates, not enough is known to develop specific detection and prevention measures targeting this population. This paper addresses the application of Joiner’s IPTS to both genders in each of …

La Luz: Illuminating The Effects Of Language And Considering The Role Of Culture In A Postpartum Depression Prevention Program For Spanish- And English-Speaking Mothers, Erin Flanagan

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common and concerning mental health condition. Many prevention programs and interventions have been researched to prevent or alleviate symptoms of postpartum depression. The current study aimed to examine the effects of a psychoeducational PPD prevention program (ROSE), administered in the early postpartum period, on reported PPD symptoms and parenting self-efficacy beliefs in both English and Spanish speaking women. The study investigated the hypotheses that: a PPD prevention program which has been validated in the prenatal period would be efficacious in reducing depressive symptoms when administered postpartum; the PPD prevention program would improve parenting self-efficacy; and …

Community Development Supporting Ecological Conversion, As Identified In Laudato Si’: On Care For Our Common Home, Anne Jennings Jan 2022

Community Development Supporting Ecological Conversion, As Identified In Laudato Si’: On Care For Our Common Home, Anne Jennings

Theses

In this extraordinary time of multiple, intersecting crises with compounded costs in social, economic, and environmental degradation, calls for transformative change are emerging from all levels of humanity – global to local. Within that setting, my study concentrated on investigating change at a local level to address the research question ’How can community development theory and practice contribute to ecological conversion, as identified in Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home?’

Since its release, Laudato Si’ has provoked considerable academic/theological and scientific/environmental debate that does not necessarily contain local people’s views and everyday lived experiences, given their often-limited access …

The Lasting Impact Of Deinstitutionalization: Policing And The Mental Health Crisis, Ruqayyah Sorathia Jan 2022

The Lasting Impact Of Deinstitutionalization: Policing And The Mental Health Crisis, Ruqayyah Sorathia

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Society is combating the detrimental effects of the deinstitutionalization policy, which transferred the treatment of mentally ill patients from state-run psychiatric hospitals to community-run psychiatric facilities. These patients frequently fall into relapses and are more likely to experience risky encounters with law enforcement officials who have no formal training in dealing with them. The paper analyzes the criminalization of mentally ill people, many with substance abuse and alcohol addictions, receiving treatment in jails and state prisons. Incarcerating people with mental illness, though reducing the homeless population from the street and disturbances faced by the public, still does not address the …

Undoing The Dyad: Re-Examining Mentorship With A Feminist Lens, Bailey Wallace, Melissa Dewitt, Elia Trucks Jan 2022

Undoing The Dyad: Re-Examining Mentorship With A Feminist Lens, Bailey Wallace, Melissa Dewitt, Elia Trucks

University Libraries: Faculty Scholarship

Academic libraries consistently use mentoring programs to integrate new employees by sharing organizational knowledge and providing support to advance in their careers. Traditional models of mentorship are tools that help support existing power structures and keep in power those benefiting from the associated privilege. One way to interrogate traditional mentorship models and their inherent inequities is to apply a feminist lens in examining the expectations and actions of mentors and mentees. This chapter discusses how the traditional dyad mentoring model does not support everyone equally and explores alternative, inclusive models of mentorship, such as group mentoring and peer mentoring. We …

The Wheel Of Oppression: Rolling Towards Substance Use In Central Appalachia, Sydney Cox Jan 2022

The Wheel Of Oppression: Rolling Towards Substance Use In Central Appalachia, Sydney Cox

DSW Capstone Projects

For nearly 100 years, Central Appalachia has been characterized by some of the highest poverty rates in the nation. Not coincidentally, the region has also been characterized by some of the highest rates of substance use. Despite decades of funding and support, Central Appalachia continues to foster a symbiotic relationship between poverty and substance use. The purpose of this project was to explore the missing link that ties the two poor determinants of health together and to provide a name to a phenomenon otherwise omitted from social work and policy making practice within Central Appalachia.

The first product of this …

Child Welfare: Workforce Retention, Competence, And The Connection To Social Work Education, Brittany Stanley Jan 2022

Child Welfare: Workforce Retention, Competence, And The Connection To Social Work Education, Brittany Stanley

DSW Capstone Projects

While there are many avenues to discuss and explore, the key area of interest for the Capstone Project is that of retention of a competent frontline workforce. Each state has their own set of guidelines for hiring frontline workers which allows for variety in the educational backgrounds of the investigative and ongoing workers. This can become problematic when the educational background may not be the most suited for the work and challenges faced by child welfare workers.

During the development of the Capstone Project, one could not help but wonder that if workers were adequately prepared for the demands of …
