Cultural And Gender Shifts: Trends And Factors Hmong Male Students Face In Pursuit Of Higher Education, Sai Yang Xiong
Cultural And Gender Shifts: Trends And Factors Hmong Male Students Face In Pursuit Of Higher Education, Sai Yang Xiong
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The educational trends in the attainment of Hmong American students in higher education have grown significantly over the past 40+ years. However, modern academia is still somewhat new to most United States Hmong refugees since their resettlement in 1975 after the Vietnam War. Hmong students are children of refugee immigrants who came to the United States with no formal schooling, limited English proficiency, and a low-socioeconomic background. Hmong parents believe that having an education will enable their children to seek employment, perform well in society, and gain financial stability. The purpose of this study was to analyze challenges that contribute …
Development Of A Capacity Building Program To Promote Trauma-Informed Services, Juan Miguel Medina
Development Of A Capacity Building Program To Promote Trauma-Informed Services, Juan Miguel Medina
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Wichita County, Texas experienced decreased academic performances of elementary level children in 24 out of 45 communities. Higher numbers of traumatic experiences increase a child's risk of not meeting developmental benchmarks. The purpose of this capstone project is to support the development of a trauma-informed capacity-building program. Ungar's resiliency theory was used to understand the factors related to building resilience in children to prevent trauma. Using action research, the researcher explored how developing program content may improve an agency's system readiness to deliver effective trauma-informed care. Data were collected from a focus group with local social workers. Content analysis was …
Child Welfare Workers’ Development Of Cultural Competency For Clients In Poverty, Rachel Armstead
Child Welfare Workers’ Development Of Cultural Competency For Clients In Poverty, Rachel Armstead
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Children of families living in poverty are at a higher risk of being victims of child maltreatment than children of families not living in poverty. Many families involved in the child welfare system live in poverty and have low socioeconomic status. The National Association of Social Workers requires all social workers to have a level of cultural awareness, knowledge, and skill to engage clients from diverse cultures. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore child welfare workers’ understanding of cultural competence and their implementation of culturally sensitive practices as they engage clients living in poverty. Bacote’s cultural competence …
Challenges For Hospital Leadership In Obtaining Urology And Otolaryngology Community Preceptors, Donna Orsatti
Challenges For Hospital Leadership In Obtaining Urology And Otolaryngology Community Preceptors, Donna Orsatti
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Healthcare organizations are becoming more complex and medical education is constantly evolving in response to healthcare needs. These changes have an impact on community preceptors that supervise and train medical residents. Physicians willing to engage in community-based precepting are decreasing, thereby making it difficult for students to complete medical specializations. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the challenges healthcare leaders face when attempting to secure practicums or residencies in urology and otolaryngology. This case study used the Baldrige Excellence Framework as a lens to understand the organization’s functioning within the educational healthcare sector. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were …

Experiences In Informal Mentoring Among African American Women In Management, Alexandria Simone Samuels-Ross
Experiences In Informal Mentoring Among African American Women In Management, Alexandria Simone Samuels-Ross
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a lack of African American women representing senior management and executive positions within nonprofit organizations due to organizational culture, gender stereotypes, and failure to capitalize on the talents of women in general. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the informal mentoring experiences of African American women employed as managers for over two years in nonprofit organizations. Research has suggested the need for further study of on-the-job mentoring and its impact on employees’ job satisfaction and opportunities to advance within an organization. The theoretical framework that guided the study was social exchange theory, which is …
Military Emergency And Critical Care Nurses’ Lived Experiences Of Resilience, Carla Ann Wiese
Military Emergency And Critical Care Nurses’ Lived Experiences Of Resilience, Carla Ann Wiese
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Resilience has been studied across a myriad of populations. Many resilience studies have focused on military service members, including military healthcare personnel, specifically nurses. Although many quantitative resilience studies have been conducted, there have been few qualitative studies in this area. Qualitative studies have focused solely on spiritual resilience, although mixed methods studies have identified other resilience characteristics. The aim of this descriptive phenomenological study was to identify resilience characteristics through rich description within the situational and philosophical patterns of resilience and gain a better understanding of how emergency and critical care military nurses honed resilience in the face of …

Exploring The Behavioral Health Clinician Shortage At A Rural Midwestern U.S. Agency, Tracy L. Wilson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Behavioral health clinician shortages are a significant and ongoing problem in the United States, especially in rural areas, which have higher rates of homelessness, suicide, substance use, and violence rates than urban areas. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore factors contributing to the behavioral health clinician shortage in a rural midwestern U.S. public health department. The goal was to gain a better understanding of this shortage and explore strategies and solutions for recruiting and retaining behavioral health clinicians at the agency’s facilities. The Baldrige excellence framework undergirded the investigation. Data sources included interviews with three administrative …
Social Workers’ Role In School Discipline Of Black Male Students, Teresa L. Cooper
Social Workers’ Role In School Discipline Of Black Male Students, Teresa L. Cooper
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
School administrators enforce various forms of school discipline, including office referrals, suspensions, and expulsions, as strategies to maintain safe learning environments for students and staff. Over four decades of research indicate Black male students experience more consequences and receive tougher school discipline than their peers of other races. School discipline potentially causes adverse outcomes for students. Schools employ social workers to support behavior and academic needs of students. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore lived experiences of school social workers in their role in school discipline of Black male students. The theoretical framework used for this study …

The Impact Of Wrongful Death Lawsuits On Police Officers, Richard Kevin Powers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement has become known as one of the most stressful occupations. Stress can have negative impacts on police officers’ professional careers and their personal life. This qualitative research revealed the unseen pressure of wrongful death lawsuits involving police officers, especially those cleared of any criminal wrongdoings. The study explored the police officers' perceptions while gaining knowledge from their lived experiences of how wrongful death lawsuits impacted them professionally and personally. This qualitative study was guided by the person-in-environment theory, which means that the environment can affect the police officer. In return, the police officer can affect the environment. The …

Chronic Pain-Related Opioid Use In Atlanta, Georgia, Alexis Ware
Chronic Pain-Related Opioid Use In Atlanta, Georgia, Alexis Ware
Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation
Significant Findings:
Chronic pain is recognized as one of the most common reasons for medical visits (Bertin et al., 2021). These visits frequently lead to opioid prescriptions for treatment. Since 2013, the opioid-related overdose epidemic has placed an undue burden on the healthcare system (Dahlby & Kerr, 2020). The increase in opioid prescriptions over the past two decades has increased rates of misuse and addiction in patients suffering from chronic pain (Bertin et al., 2021). From a public health perspective, these rates indicate a need for greater collaboration and coordination of care among healthcare providers (Dahlby & Kerr, 2020).

Icu-Related Medical Trauma: A Socioecological Exploration Of Contributing Factors And Experiences Of Traumatic Stress In Adult Icu Survivors, Jacqueline Hanson
Icu-Related Medical Trauma: A Socioecological Exploration Of Contributing Factors And Experiences Of Traumatic Stress In Adult Icu Survivors, Jacqueline Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
Advances in biomedical technologies and critical care are leading to increased survivorship rates of ICU patients. During critical care, patients confront a variety of stressors that may contribute to adverse psychological outcomes, including posttraumatic stress. The nature of posttraumatic stress in this population differs from that associated with traditional trauma. The phenomenon of medical trauma in ICU survivors is complex: it is highly subjective, exists on a continuum, is cumulative in nature and carries cumulative effects, involves a combination of endogenous and exogenous, physical and emotional stressors that vary in intensity and duration, occurs in an interpersonal context that involves …

Scandinavian Work-Life Balance Experience: Its Implementation In The United Arab Emirates (Uae) Happiness Context, Maktoom Al Mazrouei
Theses and Dissertations
Employee happiness and satisfaction are unanimously correlated to enhanced levels of productivity and efficiency, making them important for employees and employers. Scandinavian countries consistently rank highly on the world happiness index and correspondingly possess comparatively happier employees in their workplaces. Aside from the structural setting, internal components, and atmosphere of the workplace, it is primarily understood that the initiatives undertaken by Scandinavian countries in relation to the concept of work life balance are significantly important. The concept of work-life balance is cognizant of an employee’s struggle in maintaining equilibrium between work and personal life. This study could aid the United …
A Nurse-Driven Protocol To Increase Metabolic Screening And Interventions For Inpatients On Antipsychotic Medications, James Thomas Demarco
A Nurse-Driven Protocol To Increase Metabolic Screening And Interventions For Inpatients On Antipsychotic Medications, James Thomas Demarco
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Patients on antipsychotic medications are at higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome; nevertheless, metabolic screening for patients on antipsychotics is suboptimal. This project implemented a nurse-driven protocol on inpatient psychiatric units to increase metabolic screening compliance rates. The literature on improving metabolic screening as well as the clinical use of nurse-driven protocols were used to develop a protocol. The initial implementation of the protocol showed no change in screening rate; however, when the protocol was updated to include nursing leader involvement, metabolic screening increased. Nurses’ perception of the nurse-driven protocol was examined and found a negative perception and no change …

Parra, Jessica L. Calvi, Michael Yellow Bird, Pearl Avari, Jaclynn Foged, John Smith
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Findings suggest that an eight-week mindfulness compassion-based program, Cultivating Healthy Intentional Mindful Educators (CHIME), is a feasible professional development intervention for early childhood (EC) teachers to support their emotion regulation and psychological and workplace well-being. We offer preliminary evidence that learning about mindfulness, self-compassion, and social-emotional learning supports EC teachers in strengthening their knowledge and application of practices to be more mindful and less emotionally reactive and emotionally exhausted at work. In analyzing both EC teacher feedback and survey data from two pilot studies, there was promising evidence that participating in CHIME enhanced awareness of emotions and the development of …
Using Simulation For Law Enforcement De-Escalation Training, Julie Kent
Using Simulation For Law Enforcement De-Escalation Training, Julie Kent
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Law enforcement needs simulation practice tailored to de-escalation skills. Law enforcement officers spend most of their training time practicing how to use force appropriately and very little time practicing how to avoid using force. There is little research into the best ways for law enforcement to reduce their use of force and the best ways to provide training to individuals to coach them to avoid using force. There are many training programs promoting de-escalation techniques, but there is little research into the effectiveness of these programs beyond the ability of individuals to perform the skills that are trained. There is …
The Application Of Salutogenesis In Communities And Neighborhoods, Lenneke Vaandrager, Lynne Kennedy
The Application Of Salutogenesis In Communities And Neighborhoods, Lenneke Vaandrager, Lynne Kennedy
All Works
Communities and neighborhoods have reemerged as important settings for health promotion; they are particularly effective for encouraging social processes which may shape our life-chances and lead to improved health and well-being; consequently, as Scriven and Hodgins, (2012) note, of all the settings (cities, schools, workplaces, universities, etc.), communities are the least well defined. Indeed, within the health literature, they are frequently referred to in terms of place, identity, social entity, or collective action. This chapter on communities and neighborhoods distinguishes between settings as a place (natural and built environment), identity (sense of community), social entity (cohesion, social capital), and collective action …
An Investigation Of Rural And Mental Health Disparities Across Five Dimensions Of Healthcare Access, Nicholas Charles Coombs
An Investigation Of Rural And Mental Health Disparities Across Five Dimensions Of Healthcare Access, Nicholas Charles Coombs
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Access to healthcare is a complicated public health challenge. Healthcare access is multi-dimensional and combines characteristics of individuals, their households, and their social and physical environments with system-level characteristics of healthcare delivery systems, organizations and healthcare providers. Access encompasses five dimensions: approachability, acceptability, availability, affordability and appropriateness. This dissertation investigates these five dimensions of access to healthcare in the context of two populations of interest: 1) persons who reside in rural areas and 2) persons who experience mental health challenges. Both persons in rural areas and persons with mental health challenges have structural barriers to healthcare access. Additionally, rural health …

Retention And Performance During Covid-19: Prosociality Perception, Social Isolation, And Online Engagement, Ashli L M Schick
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The experiences of university students impacted by COVID-19 and circumstances surrounding their experiences, help inform the future of higher education in the United States. In the uncertain and rapidly evolving higher education system, understanding retention patterns of students has become increasingly complex. This study examined how self-perceived prosociality and self-perceived social isolation among university students in an online education environment relate to the intention to re-enroll in university and their academic achievement (Grade Point Average; GPA). Ninety-seven university and community college students completed an online survey. Based on previous literature, we expected women to report higher prosociality perceptions than men …

Disparate Financial Assistance Support For Small Business Owners, Sophia Fox-Dichter, Daniel Auguste, Mathieu Despard, Michal Grinstein-Weiss
Social Policy Institute Research
Small business owners experienced a drastic economic disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Government pandemic assistance failed to reach many small business owners, especially those historically underserved by financial institutions. Drawing on a 2021 survey of 246 small business owners, the Social Policy Institute at Washington University in St. Louis descriptively examined the extent to which small business owners sought and received business assistance, and whether applications and approval of government assistance varied by race and ethnicity. We find that though Hispanic and Black business owners applied for government assistance at a higher rate than white business owners, Black business …
