Creating A Virtual Reality Experience In Service To A Non-Profit Agency, Frank Deese, Susan Lakin, Isabelle Anderson
Frameless
In the summer of 2018, RIT Professors Susan Lakin and Frank Deese discussed with the principal officers of the Society for the Protection and Care of Children (SPCC) in Rochester how the new technology of Virtual Reality might be used to not only impart information to viewers, but generate empathy for those receiving services from the organization as well as those performing those services. Their ultimate goal was to create an experience that could be viewed with VR headsets at fundraising events and on a website using low-cost Google Cardboard.

While preventive and management measures are important to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, strategies like social distancing can have devastating effects on older adults who are already at risk for social isolation and loneliness. In response, two Colleges of Health Professions (Social Work and Nursing) at a large public University leveraged a partnership with a national health and wellbeing company to address social isolation and loneliness in Houston area older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. This intergenerational linkage initiative involved 707 older adults and 177 graduate social work and nursing students. This study describes the process of developing a virtual …

Public Health Policy On The Covid-19 Pandemic And Its Impact On The Behavior Patterns Of Families, Fakir Al Gharaibeh, Laura Gibson
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study examined the public health measures adopted by the Jordanian government that contributed to stemming the spread of the pandemic and the impact of these measures on the behavior patterns of families. Content analysis was used with 117 news briefs, and interviews were conducted with 20 families identified through snowball sampling. Ecological systems theory and a public health model are used to frame our understanding of the results. We found themes from interviews that included a shift to online education, use of social media, changes in consumer behavior, and social initiatives.
The Relationship Between Intimate Partner Violence And Alcohol Consumption Among Young Adults In The Us And Uganda: A Comparative Analysis, Aissa Sylla
Symposium of Student Scholars
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a significant human rights issue that is highly prevalent internationally and has serious health consequences. Alcohol consumption may be related to elevated IPV risk. The risk of both IPV and excessive alcohol use may be greater among young adults when compared with older adults. Further, the relationship between IPV and alcohol may differ internationally. The AUDIT scale was used to measure alcohol consumption, and the CAS-R was used to measure IPV perpetration. Data were stratified by country and sex, and Fisher’s exact tests were used to assess whether there was a statistically significant relationship between …

(Mis)Representations of Queer Media on TikTok: The Politics of Coming Out
LGBTQ+ representation in the media can be hard to find and even when it is, pertinent questions must be posed about it. Given the complexities that arise within the consumption, curation, and production of queer media, I investigate the implications of cisgender and heterosexual (what I call non-LGBTQ+) storytellers utilizing queer stories and how users on TikTok are discussing these utilizations. The portrayal of queer stories by non-LGBTQ+ individuals may not only be unauthentic, but they may also be harmful. This textual analysis of TikToks aims to answer this …

Substance Use Disorders, Cognitive Dysfunction, and Neurodivergence in Emerging Adulthood
Posada, D., Herbert, J., Weingast, L., Holliday, E.
Cognitive functioning in college students with substance use disorders (SUD) has been widely researched, however, discussions have largely concentrated on executive functions (EF) such as working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control. Literature on the relationship between cognitive dysfunction and SUD has largely underreported the influence of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders (ADD/ADHD) and other neurodivergent characteristics. The current review explores the state of the literature on the relationship between neurodivergence, cognitive dysfunction, and SUD in emerging adulthood. More specifically, it speculates whether college students …
Gender Inequity As An Effect Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kennedy Broner
Gender Inequity As An Effect Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kennedy Broner
Symposium of Student Scholars
The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us many lessons. Some of which were only made possible because of its widespread impact in every aspect of our lives. One of the lessons we learned is the value of anything unexpected. From medical research to political rhetoric and socio-political debate, the pandemic has shaped the home, the workplace, and the community.
Issues related to equity, or better-said inequities, became a flashpoint for the disparities that exist in society. Said inequity was discovered in various capacities such as gender discrimination, underpaid salaries, and barriers to accessing efficient healthcare. Disparities that under “normal conditions” would …

How Covid-19 Has Impacted Mothers: The Decisions They Make & Their Overall Wellbeing, Alaya Tyler
Symposium of Student Scholars
Women and mothers are a vital component of the modern-day workforce. However, the emergence of COVID-19 in early 2020 drastically affected the way women and more specifically mothers can participate in the workforce. The lack of adequate options regarding childcare, work flexibility, and support became apparent when trying to make decisions regarding home and work. For example, decisions involving money became do or die as mothers were forced to make decisions to pause or stop their careers so that they could take care of their children in dual households. In contrast, single mothers were met with almost no alternatives as …

Abstract
Parenting is not an easy task, but during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, parenting especially for women who work outside the home and were caregivers for the young and old had an exceptionally onerous time. According to Brookings (2020), “COVID-19 has also increased the pressure on working mothers, low-wage and otherwise. In a survey from May and June, one out of four women who became unemployed during the pandemic reported the job loss was due to a lack of childcare, twice the rate of men surveyed. A more …

Abstract
Collegiate Recovery Programs (CRPs) provide services to support emerging adults achieve academic success, while maintaining substance use disorder recovery. College and university campuses can often be considered abstinence-hostile environments, giving rise to the need of support services for students in recovery. A nationwide survey to understand the efficacy of services provided by CRPs was conducted to assess the demographics and academic profiles of students involved with CRPs. Co-occurring disorders including mental health issues, criminal histories, utilizations of recovery services and 12-step groups, and work histories of students were also assessed. CRPs can provide services and an environment to students …
Health Equity For All, Kirsten Davis
Health Equity For All, Kirsten Davis
Symposium of Student Scholars
Abstract
Past research has found clear evidence for racial disparities of chronic disease among African Americans when considered alongside other racial groups. African American men are particularly impacted by these disparities. Social determinants of health such as structural racism combined with cultural elements such as diet and risk-taking behaviors are incredibly predictive of the health burdens of African American men. Furthermore, low-income African American men struggle with food insecurity, lack of housing, and often rely on government health programs due to a lack of health insurance. However, most research on chronic health conditions fails to focus on low-income African American …

Challenges Nonprofits Face With Communication Between Volunteers And The Organization And The Damaging Effect It Causes, James Cooke
Symposium of Student Scholars
Discrepancies in information, lack of communication, and losing track of data due to poor communication practices are only some reasons nonprofit organizations are less effective when dealing with emergency events. This issue does not only begin at the volunteer and organization level of communication but even at the interagency level. This article will explore organizations' shortcomings in how communication occurs between the organization's leadership, personnel, and volunteers and will peer into interagency communication issues. Many issues plague the area of communication within nonprofits that operate within disaster areas, like collecting, aggregating, analyzing, and then disseminating it to everyone who would …

Women’S Self-Concept, Sexual Activity, And Intimacy After Sustaining A Traumatic Brain Injury, Erin Skotzke
Women’S Self-Concept, Sexual Activity, And Intimacy After Sustaining A Traumatic Brain Injury, Erin Skotzke
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have a profound impact on how people think and feel about themselves and their abilities, values, goals, personalities, physical characteristics, and roles. Preliminary research findings suggest that barriers to developing a positive self-concept after injury in women include the desire to be perceived as “normal” after the injury or the feeling that society dismisses their injuries. In the field of occupational therapy, it is critical that therapists and researchers understand that self-concept can be altered after sustaining a TBI. This outcome can have a significant impact on participation in valued occupations, including participation in …
