Corruption And Merit In The African Higher Education System: Legal, Policy And Sociological Reflections, Cristiano D'Orsi
Corruption And Merit In The African Higher Education System: Legal, Policy And Sociological Reflections, Cristiano D'Orsi
UC Law SF International Law Review
This article analyses, under legal, political, and sociological aspects, the plight of corruption in Higher Education in Africa. On one side, the fight against corruption on the continent seems to use a growing number of legal instruments, at all levels (international, regional, sub-regional and domestic) on the other hand, however, it clashes against rooted traditions and a common mentality that often seem to justify acts of corruption in African academia. Through my work, I shed light on this, at least apparent, dichotomy and to make a synthesis of the various positions that can be found in Africa regarding this sensitive …
Influences On The Attachment Style Of Deaf Adults With Hearing Parents, Ellen Schaefer-Salins
Influences On The Attachment Style Of Deaf Adults With Hearing Parents, Ellen Schaefer-Salins
JADARA
The current study explored variables that could contribute to the development of a secure or insecure attachment style of 15 deaf adults between the ages of 30 and 50 with hearing parents. There is a paucity of information on the relationship of deaf adults to their hearing parent and how that relationship may influence attachment. For the current study, quantitative methods were used to explore both childhood and adulthood variables, such as type of communication used with parents, type and level of schooling, and current attachment style. Variables also studied include age, gender, race, birth order, marital status, the hearing …
Existence As A Threat, Alena M. Allen
Existence As A Threat, Alena M. Allen
Connecticut Law Review
There is an ongoing debate in the legal academy about how and whether to integrate race into curricula. For people of color, race impacts their day-to-day lives in ways large and small. In the law school setting, the experience of students of color is often a fraught one. For many students of color, navigating law school is akin to walking a tight rope. This Essay attempts to highlight the myriad challenges facing students of color, and it offers some thoughts about how to create a more inclusive environment

To meet the interprofessional education needs of students during the COVID-19 pandemic, universities transitioned to virtual options. For many universities, this transition was challenging and time-consuming. The Arkansas Interprofessional Education Consortium (ARIPEC) combined resources to create a novel learning experience for students with a focus on the skill of home assessment. An interinstitutional, interprofessional faculty project team was developed to create a learning experience, with each institution responsible for a portion of the virtual simulation development. This paper describes the process for creation and implementation of an interprofessional, interinstitutional virtual learning experience to support the growth of healthcare students across …
Addressing Stigma And False Beliefs About Mental Health: A New Direction For Mental Health Parity Advocacy, Claire Sontheimer, Michael Ulrich
Addressing Stigma And False Beliefs About Mental Health: A New Direction For Mental Health Parity Advocacy, Claire Sontheimer, Michael Ulrich
Faculty Scholarship
Despite laws designed to protect mental health and substance use parity in the United States, real parity remains an aspiration. Under the current system, insurance companies use multiple tactics to deny coverage for or delay the provision of mental health and substance use disorder (MH/SUD) treatment. The difficulty of enforcing parity creates a barrier to achieving the goal of accessible behavioral health services. Rather than a continued effort to legislate our way out of this conundrum, it may be useful to look further upstream. Critical impediments to achieving such parity include the basic attitudes and beliefs about mental and behavioral …

Ideological And Strategic Influences On Hezbollah's Decisions To Deliver Social Service Provisions, Morgan Mcminn
Ideological And Strategic Influences On Hezbollah's Decisions To Deliver Social Service Provisions, Morgan Mcminn
Theses - ALL
Hezbollah is a unique organization that acts as a transnational group, an insurgent group and a major political party in Lebanon. Since the founding of Hezbollah, they have found social service provisions to be an important aspect of their organization and have had immense control over the territory, acting as a state within the state of Lebanon. Hezbollah offers an organizational structure, a conflict resolution mechanism, healthcare, education and much more to their primarily Shi'a constituents, however to other sects as well. My master's thesis seeks to examine the reasons that Hezbollah does offer these social service provisions. Through the …

The Psychological Empowerment Impact Of Twitter Microblogging: The Case Of #Stopasianhate During Covid-19 Pandemic, Natnaree Wongmith
Theses - ALL
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a surge in anti-Asian hate incidents across the US (Misra et al., 2020). As a response to the alarming escalation in xenophobia and racism resulting from the pandemic, #StopAsianHate and #StopAAPIHate have been employed to shed light on the issues. Twitter can effectively assist protestors to participate in the movement by facilitating collective effort, efficiently disseminating the information, and encouraging the discussion about a topic (Chon & Park, 2020). Social media has been recognized for its contribution to one's empowerment in various domains, allowing the marginalized group to regain their sense of power …

Legislating Mandatory Reporting Of Child Abuse In India And China: A Divergence Of Legislative Choice, Wenjuan Zhang, Avaantika Chawla
Legislating Mandatory Reporting Of Child Abuse In India And China: A Divergence Of Legislative Choice, Wenjuan Zhang, Avaantika Chawla
Socio-Legal Review
Mandatory reporting is used as a tool for early identification of child abuse by countries around the world. However, there is variation in terms of the legislative models followed. The two models most commonly followed are universal mandatory reporting and stakeholder specific mandatory reporting. India and China joined the bandwagon and introduced legislation on mandatory reporting over a decade ago. While India has adopted the ambitious model of universal mandatory reporting, China has taken a more incremental and experimental approach with stakeholder-specific mandatory reporting. The paper aims to differentiate the legislative approaches taken by the two countries for introducing mandatory …

Embedding Anti-Racism In The Teaching, Learning And Assessment Of The Community Development And Youth Work Programme: Lessons Learned To Date., Brid Ni Chonaill, Georgina Lawlor, Noirin Macnamara, Liam Mcglynn, Garreth Smith, Sheila Coyle, Mairead Cluskey
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
The Black Lives Matter movement has placed a spotlight on racism, not just as a global phenomenon but as a feature of Irish society. Research conducted with Community Development and Youth Work students on the TU Dublin Blanchardstown campus found that some had encountered racism on placement and felt ill-equipped to deal with it. As a group of white lecturers working with diverse students, we sought and received funding to conduct a project during the academic year 2020/21 which aimed to embed anti-racism in the teaching, learning and assessment of that programme. An action-research methodology using a mixed-methods approach was …

Moral Distress During Covid-19: The Importance Of Perceived Organizational Support For Hospital Nurses, Abigail Latimer, Melanie D. Otis, Gia Mudd-Martin, Debra K. Moser
UK CARES Faculty Publications
Moral distress, or the inability to act congruent with moral beliefs, has been of concern for healthcare professionals especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Hospital nurses are particularly affected in their roles with mounting administrative pressures and demands. We examined whether general and COVID- specific support in employing healthcare organizations predicted moral distress in a sample of inpatient hospital nurses. A total of 248 nurses completed the Measure of Moral Distress for Healthcare Professionals, Survey of Perceived Organizational Support, COVID Organizational Support survey, and the Hospital Ethical Climate Scale. We found that general and COVID-related organizational support were predictors of moral …

A Pilot Study Of A Cohort-Based Solution-Focused Wellness Group For Graduate Students Using Solution-Focused Coaching, James Beauchemin, Danya Krueger, Jennifer Newman, Paul Beitelspacher
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
Graduate students experience heightened levels of stress, compromising their well-being and predisposing them to mental health disorders. Graduate students are over six times more likely to experience depression and anxiety than the general population. Despite the presence of counseling services on college and university campuses, graduate students are less likely to access these services and more prone to utilize alternative institutional supports (i.e., faculty advisors or peer counselors). This pilot study assessed the effectiveness of a six-week solution focused wellness (SFW) group intervention with a graduate program cohort using a pre-post, mixed-methods design. A total of twenty-seven (N = 27) …

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy-Enhanced Fatherhood Curriculum Pilot Study: A Comparison Of Delivery Methods In Response To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Johnny Kim, In Young Park, Jennifer Bellamy, Susan Burt, Gary Grambort, Sarah Locklear, Ken Sanders
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
Many fatherhood programs provide curriculum-based peer groups, but the evidence for their effectiveness is limited and prior studies highlight challenges in recruiting and retaining participants. This pilot study aimed to test the effectiveness of a standard fatherhood curriculum enhanced with Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) using a quasi-experimental design. Study outcomes included father involvement and parenting skills measured immediately post-intervention. A sample of 92 fathers (M age = 35.2) participating in a fatherhood program were recruited to participate in the study. Due to COVID-19, the treatment groups were moved to an online format. Independent samples and paired samples t-test …
Solution Focused Brief Therapy And Vicarious Resilience In Bolivian Protective Family Services Workers, Marcos Pérez Lamadrid, Adam S. Froerer
Solution Focused Brief Therapy And Vicarious Resilience In Bolivian Protective Family Services Workers, Marcos Pérez Lamadrid, Adam S. Froerer
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
Vicarious resilience (VR) is defined as the positive effects caregivers experience within their personal lives, their work lives, and within their worldview as a whole, that come from witnessing the resilience that clients demonstrate in facing their traumatic experiences. This research study is a quasi-experimental pilot study about how solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) influences the vicarious resilience of family protective system (SLIM) workers in Bolivia. The Vicarious Resilience Inventory (VRI) was administered in a pretest/posttest design for an experimental group (applying SFBT) and a control group (training as usual). Both groups experienced an increase in vicarious resilience, but the …

During the COVID-19 pandemic, health risk behaviours related to substance use have been recognised as a significant public health concern amongst university students. Understanding the mechanisms of substance use behaviours, including those used to cope with COVID-19-related stressors, is imperative to curate targeted prevention efforts. To that end, we examined substance use prevalence and its associations with socio-demographic characteristics, preventive behaviours, and mental health amongst US social work students. We collected data from 457 students across all degree levels (BSW, MSW and PhD) from July to August 2020 through an online survey, to examine thirty-day patterns of substance use behaviours …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Our aim was to investigate the inclusion of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) topics in medical curricula and the perceived need for, feasibility of, and bar-riers to teaching SRHR. We distributed a survey with questions on SRHR content, and factors regulating SRHR content, to medical universities worldwide using chain referral. Associations between high SRHR content and independent variables were analyzed using unconditional linear regression or χ2 test. Text data were analyzed by thematic analysis. We collected data from 219 respondents, 143 universities and 54 countries. Clinical SRHR topics such as safe pregnancy and childbirth (95.7%) and contraceptive methods …

The Use Of A Clinical Pathway To Increase Child Abuse Screenings Of Young Children With Fractures, Stephanie Li Schaller
The Use Of A Clinical Pathway To Increase Child Abuse Screenings Of Young Children With Fractures, Stephanie Li Schaller
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Nationally, infants and young children who present to emergency departments with fractures are not being screened adequately for possible physical abuse with a skeletal survey (Paine & Wood, 2018; Shelmerdine et al., 2014; Wood et al., 2019). Without universal screenings, implicit bias along racial and socioeconomic lines becomes a factor in deciding which children with fractures get screened, resulting in either under-or over-utilization of skeletal survey screenings (Kim et al., 2017; Paine & Wood, 2018). When child abuse is not diagnosed correctly, further abusive injuries or death can occur (Ravischandiran et al., 2010). Purpose: This evidence-based practice project …

Onboarding Program Eastern Band Of Cherokee Indians - Theory Of Change, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development
Other QIC-WD Products
During the needs assessment process facilitated by the Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD) three areas of need were discussed for possible intervention at Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) Family Safety Program (FSP): 1) team cohesion across the various agency units, 2) unhealthy levels of employee stress and work overload, and 3) inconsistent onboarding practices. For each area, a problem statement was developed, and in-depth root cause analysis and theory of change discussions were conducted. Ultimately, one theory of change was developed to step through the “if, then” logic for implementation of an onboarding program to improve worker …
An Evaluation Of A School Mental Health Program For Underserved Youth In Rural South Carolina, Tristan Collier
An Evaluation Of A School Mental Health Program For Underserved Youth In Rural South Carolina, Tristan Collier
Theses and Dissertations
School, community, and youth-serving system partnerships can support implementing comprehensive school mental health (SMH) systems including services beyond direct therapy for students (i.e., multiple tiers of support). Utilizing a comprehensive approach to SMH allows clinicians to form stronger relationships with administrators, school staff, and most importantly, students who may need services. This comprehensive approach to SMH includes incorporating the SMH clinician into the culture and daily activities of the schools (e.g., helping direct students in the bus line), to increase the visibility of the clinician and services available as well as provide opportunities for direct outreach to students. One such …

Introduction: Reproductive and sexual health (RSH) are core components of comprehensive care, yet often omitted in addiction treatment. We characterize knowledge of and interest in RSH services and contraceptive method awareness and use in a rural, Appalachian outpatient clinic.
Materials and Methods: Between September 2016 and April 2018, a convenience sample of 225 patients receiving treatment for opioid use disorder at an outpatient buprenorphine/naloxone clinic was collected. Participants completed a cross-sectional RSH survey that included demographics, interest in RSH service integration, contraceptive use, and contraceptive knowledge.
Results: A total of 212 people (126 non-pregnant women, 29 pregnant women, and 57 …
School-Based Health Centers Versus Telehealth Programs On Professional Quality Of Life Of Public School Teachers In Arkansas, Amber Ellis
College of Education Dissertations
This dissertation aimed to determine by type of school-based health program—schoolbased health centers (SBHCs) or telehealth programs (tSBHC)—and years of teaching experience on the effects of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress among public school teachers in Arkansas districts. Mandates legitimize the additional mental health supports for students; however, supports for teachers who interact with those students is almost non-existent. The Professional Quality of Life survey measures compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary trauma in the work setting. Data were collected from novice and experienced teachers from nine Arkansas school districts and analyzed using factorial ANOVAs. SBHC and tSBHC did …

“They fought for us. We should be fighting for them.”
East Tennessee State University graduate student and United States Army veteran Francis Murillo has always had her sights set on helping others. While she is currently working on her master’s degree in clinical mental health, the story of her passion traces its beginning to nearly a decade ago. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in social work from the College of Arts and Sciences, Murillo felt called to join the Army.
“I didn’t know I wanted my master’s until I deployed,” recalled Murillo. “But when I …
