Flexibility And Usability: Focal Point Of Graduate Students’ Knowledge Level Of The Features Of Sakai Learning Management System, Jonathan Odame, Clarke Ebow Yalley

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

Coupled with the global pandemic (COVID-19) and technological advancement, the SAKAI learning management system (LMS) was initiated to deliver synchronous, asynchronous, blended instruction to break the artificial boundaries towards delivering quality education. This requires students to acquire the requisite knowledge to develop self-regulated skills to navigate through inbuilt features of SAKAI LMS to ensure usability, flexibility, and accessibility. To ascertain the usability, flexibility and accessibility of the SAKAI LMS, this study sought to examine the knowledge level of graduate students on the features of SAKAI LMS. The cross-sectional survey design was used to gather data. Using the SAKAI LMS, the …

Anishinaabeg Niizh Manitoag: Asha Amaa, We Were Always Here, Jacqueline F. Nobiss X

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

ANISHINAABEG NIIZH MANITOAG:

ASHAA A’MAA, WE WERE ALWAYS HERE

Abstract

This research is an in-depth exposé of Anishinaabeg knowledge surrounding niizh manitoag, two-spirit ways of knowing. General collections of two-spirit writings and contributions in the past thirty years uncovered a noticeable gap in the research around Anishinaabeg's two-spirit knowledge, stories, and teachings.

Using Indigenous research paradigms, this knowledge base posits a unique theoretical, conceptual framework identified as an Indigenous Relational Theory. The theory delineates a way of knowing and understanding Anishinaabe niizh manitoag, two-spirit identity. The Indigenous Relational Theory consists of four models, Relational Cultural Model, Relational Identity …

The Role Of Stigma In The Barriers To Mental Health Treatment In The Arab Culture., Maria Zafaran

Capstone Showcase

Mental illness is a complex issue that affects individuals worldwide, including those in Arab culture. Unfortunately, mental illness stigma often prevents individuals from seeking help, leading to negative consequences. However, several approaches can be implemented to decrease the stigma of mental illness among Arabs. The stigma of mental illness in the Arab region is a persistent issue. This stigma can and often leads to barriers to treatment for individuals seeking treatment. The research found in this literature review supports the existence of multiple stigma related barriers of families, religion, and acculturation, that can make it particularly difficult for Arab individuals …

Annual Credit Checks For Adolescent Youth In Foster Care: Factors Associated With Identity Fraud Victimization, John Gyourko, Johanna K. P. Greeson Jan 2023

Annual Credit Checks For Adolescent Youth In Foster Care: Factors Associated With Identity Fraud Victimization, John Gyourko, Johanna K. P. Greeson

Department of Social Work - Faculty Scholarship

Child identity fraud, or the criminal exploitation of a child’s personal data, poses serious risks and challenges for youth in foster care. Despite the 10-year history of a federal mandate requiring state child welfare agencies to conduct annual credit checks for adolescent foster youth (42 U.S.C. § 675), identity fraud has received scant attention in child welfare research. Analyzing a state-level administrative dataset with linked child welfare and consumer credit records, we employed logistic regression to assess demographic and foster care placement factors associated with identity fraud victimization among a statewide population cohort of 1,176 youth (age 14 to …

Department of Social Work - Faculty Scholarship

We used National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System and Census data to examine Black–White and Hispanic–White disparities in reporting, substantiation, and out-of-home placement both descriptively from 2005–2019 and in multivariate models from 2007–2017. We also tracked contemporaneous social risk (e.g., child poverty) and child harm (e.g., infant mortality) disparities using non-child protective services (CPS) sources and compared them to CPS reporting rate disparities. Black–White CPS reporting disparities were lower than found in non-CPS risk and harm benchmarks. Consistent with the Hispanic paradox, Hispanic–White CPS reporting disparities were lower than risk disparities but similar to harm disparities. Descriptive and multivariate …

The Moderating Role Of Service Utilization Between Newborn Mothers Financial Worries And Depression, Alysia Carcieri Jan 2023

The Moderating Role Of Service Utilization Between Newborn Mothers Financial Worries And Depression, Alysia Carcieri

Open Access Master's Theses

The experience of pregnancy and childbirth is both an exciting and stressful time in a woman’s life. New mothers, particularly those experiencing depression, can experience difficulty handling life’s daily activities, including increases in financial stressors during pregnancy and after childbirth. Women are more likely to experience depression compared to men; and women of child-bearing age are even more at risk, regardless what their race or economic status is (Cadigan & Skinner, 2015). Moreover, financial worry occurs when a person has difficulty meeting basic needs including housing, food, health care, or having late and skipped bills. The United States provides a …

Parents' Grief Literacy: How Loss Is Talked About With Children, Abigail Mccarthy Jan 2023

Parents' Grief Literacy: How Loss Is Talked About With Children, Abigail Mccarthy

All Master's Theses

Grief can encompass many types of loss, such as losing a job, moving to a new state, or changing careers, and it can affect socioemotional, behavioral, and physical aspects of daily living (Brenn et al., 2020; Favazza & Munson, 2010). Previous research has shown that the process of grief is largely misunderstood in the United States, and misconceptions of the grief and loss process can lead to perpetuated incorrect beliefs, maladaptive coping, and incorrect medical treatment (McLean et al., 2022; Sawyer et al., 2021). The term grief literacy encompasses the knowledge and engagement with topics surrounding grief and loss (Breen …

Mapping Communities Of Mothering: Where Race, Class, Gender, And Space Intersect, Cynthia Edmonds-Cady

Faculty Publications - Social Work

This manuscript explores the unique construction of community that young, low-income, women create, based on the embodied internal and external spaces they occupy as lone mothers. Issues related to diverse women’s representation, voice, and power, within these socially constructed communities are examined. Attention is paid to how young low-income mothers experience and actively create their own supportive community within both geographic and social boundaries, in active resistance to dominant and oppressive assumptions. To explore these concepts in-depth, results are presented from an ethnographic study that examined the community participation of eleven young, low-income, racially diverse single mothers living in a …

Immersive Learning And Participatory Engagement: Connecting In The Online Classroom Through Virtual Reality, Gesulla Cavanaugh, Helen M. Condry, Clarissa Frances Afable, Melissa Morris, Santanu De, Holly Evans Madison, Jacqueline Marshall, Chitra Paul Victor, Marsha Weiner

Biology Faculty Articles

Guided by constructivist theory, this study examines health professions student learning and engagement in the virtual classroom (VC) setting. Students (N=52) participated in a one-week VC prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. After participation, students were surveyed to discern their impressions of the experience, including the administration of a presence questionnaire, a key indicator of virtual environment (VE) efficacy. High student presence scores were significantly correlated with the perception that the VC facilitated learning (r = .573, p = .001). Conversely, students who perceived the course content as challenging were less likely to recommend the VC as a viable …
