Poverty And The Economic Impact Of People Of Color, Darin Roseberry Jan 2024

Poverty And The Economic Impact Of People Of Color, Darin Roseberry

Integrated Studies

This paper attempts to show and explain the effects of poverty on the lives of people of color (African Americans). The most fascinating aspect of this research is how it dates back to slavery many many years ago it still has become a generational curse to the African American families and communities. There is a way out with education, community support, and government-efficient programs that can help lead the way to a better economic future and outlook for African American people. Success comes from within and one must take pride in their own culture to put away the cultural norms …

A Comparison Of Low-Intensity Cbt Programs: Evaluating The Effects Of Design On Rebt Interventions, Alexey Dantes Breuss Jan 2024

A Comparison Of Low-Intensity Cbt Programs: Evaluating The Effects Of Design On Rebt Interventions, Alexey Dantes Breuss

Theses and Dissertations

Low-Intensity CBT interventions have become more popular over the years due to the expanding use of the internet and technology. A particular subset of Low-Intensity CBT, phone-based apps, have become more available on app-stores. The research literature on phone-based apps has not kept up in pace in comparison to the development of new applications. This leaves the quality and efficacy of such apps to be left untested. Furthermore, most applications are dominated by a Beck’s Cognitive Therapy (CT) approach, with more Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) apps on the horizon. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) has been largely neglected within the …

The Benefits Of Trauma Informed Teaching Strategies And Interventions For Students, Ryan J. Abrahamson Jan 2024

The Benefits Of Trauma Informed Teaching Strategies And Interventions For Students, Ryan J. Abrahamson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the years, schools have faced an uphill battle when discussing trauma in students. As the research continues to improve and the more it is studied, more schools are able to talk about it and learn about it. This can become a big weight on the shoulders of the teachers because students do spend the majority of their day at school during the school year. Not only are the general education students experiencing trauma but also students with disabilities are also experiencing it.. This can lead to a higher risk for the students with disabilities to experience mental health issues …

Clients In The Driver’S Seat, Not Asleep At The Wheel: A Qualitative Study Of The Client Role In Transpersonal Psychotherapy, Phyllis Alongi, Jenny Wade Jan 2024

Clients In The Driver’S Seat, Not Asleep At The Wheel: A Qualitative Study Of The Client Role In Transpersonal Psychotherapy, Phyllis Alongi, Jenny Wade

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive

Despite the power of the therapeutic alliance in effective therapy and its larger-thanthe- individuals-comprising-it (transpersonal) qualities, the client’s contribution to the therapeutic process has been largely overlooked in both conventional and transpersonal literatures. This study asked 35 transpersonal practitioners, what is the role of the client in transpersonal psychotherapy? The study examined client traits, attitudes and role demands in Jungian therapy, sandplay therapy, dream analysis, guided imagery, regression and hypnotherapy, nondual psychotherapy, and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy using inductive thematic analysis. The results distinguish transpersonal therapy clients from conventional ones, indicating that the transpersonal client role characteristics and behaviors are unavoidably more …

Are Parental Nonstandard Work Schedules A Barrier To Their School Involvement?, Kess Ballentine, Alejandra Ros Pilarz Jan 2024

Are Parental Nonstandard Work Schedules A Barrier To Their School Involvement?, Kess Ballentine, Alejandra Ros Pilarz

Social Work Faculty Publications

Parental school involvement is consistently associated with better child development outcomes. Although parental work schedules are expected to shape school involvement, little empirical research examines this relationship. Using nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Cohort 2010-11, (N=6,047), we estimated associations between parents’ work schedules and multiple indicators of school involvement. Compared to daytime schedules, flexible variable schedules were associated with more parental school involvement. Working a regular nonstandard schedule or employer-set variable schedule was not associated with school involvement, except that working nights was associated with attending fewer school events. We found limited evidence of heterogeneity …

Complicated Grief: An Arts-Based Trauma-Informed Approach, Jessica J. Porter

Community Engagement Student Work

Traumatic loss due to violent death, a death that results from the intentional use of physical force or power, can result in mental health struggles and stigma. Complicated grief, due to traumatic loss, can be felt at both the individual and the community level. A comprehensive community project proposal was presented to a panel of reviewers in the grief, loss, and bereavement community. This proposal was developed to bring awareness to complicated grief, reduce the stigma around suicide and violent death, as well as provide opportunities to grieve safely and healthily. Through artistic expression and a sense of belonging, these …

Feasibility In Embedding Charismatic Leadership Strategies Into Social Work Applications, Lana Grinev Jan 2024

Feasibility In Embedding Charismatic Leadership Strategies Into Social Work Applications, Lana Grinev

Doctorate of Social Work (DSW) Capstones 2024-

The six key charismatic leadership characteristics (i.e., communication, compassion, confidence, creativity, determination, and vision) are shown methodologically, thematically, and theoretically to provide organizations and systems with desired outcomes and results. This short generic qualitative inquiry review will provide evidence that the six key charismatic leadership characteristics are currently systematically employed in multiple diverse occupational and research settings to improve followers' goals and responses. Aligning existing leadership strategies to complement the six main charismatic leadership characteristics over recommended occupational competencies finds that charismatic leadership is a parallel process of leadership and management for social workers and other occupational domains, particularly within …

Social Workers: A Missing Piece Of The Puzzle To School Gun Violence Intervention, Richard L. Glover Jan 2024

Social Workers: A Missing Piece Of The Puzzle To School Gun Violence Intervention, Richard L. Glover

Doctorate of Social Work (DSW) Capstones 2024-

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2023) data, firearm deaths among youth are a chief public health crisis in the United States. The problem of gun violence is particularly concerning when incidents occur in schools. School stakeholders expect schools to be safe havens, particularly parents and their children. Every reported fatal incident at a school violates safety and security expectations. When the fatality involves gun violence, reactions are quick, varied, and pronounced, reflecting a range of emotions, including outrage, concern, frustration, and resignation. This paper will build a framework for a model grounded in a comprehensive literature review. …

Breaking Down Barriers: Improving Asian American Mental Health, Zhen Yang Jan 2024

Breaking Down Barriers: Improving Asian American Mental Health, Zhen Yang

Doctorate of Social Work (DSW) Capstones 2024-

Mental illness is a significant concern affecting millions of people in the United States every year. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five U.S. adults and one in six U.S. youth experience a mental health illness yearly. Shockingly, 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses begin by the age of 14, and 75% by the age of 24. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), 37% of Asian American adults reported that their mental health status was "not good." Astonishingly, 73.1% of these individuals did not receive treatment, compared to 56.7% of …

HJA Scholarship

Purpose

This report describes a multifaceted, trauma-informed initiative developed to address racial/ethnic maternal and infant health inequities in Washington, D.C.

Description

Structural racism and systemic oppression of marginalized communities have played a critical role in maternal and infant health inequities in the United States. Black birthing individuals are exponentially more likely to experience adverse birth outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight and maternal mortality. In response to these statistics, the Safe Babies Safe Moms (SBSM) initiative was developed to support patients of marginalized identities and improve health outcomes. SBSM Women’s and Infants’ Services Specialty Care (WIS-SC) is one component …

Feeding Hungry Christians: The Liverpool Muslim Institute On Christmas Day, Brent D. Singleton Jan 2024

Feeding Hungry Christians: The Liverpool Muslim Institute On Christmas Day, Brent D. Singleton

Library Faculty Publications & Presentations

The Liverpool Muslim Institute (LMI), a group of mainly British Muslim converts led by Abdullah Quilliam, began an annual tradition of feeding the poor and hungry on Christmas Day soon after the groups’ founding in the late 1880s. The feasts would become the largest and perhaps most important public event on the LMI’s calendar until its demise in 1908. This chapter provides a brief outline of the history of Christmas charity in England and Liverpool and then delves into the Muslims’ rationale for the feedings, their fundraising and preparations, and actual Christmas Day feasts, as recorded in the LMI’s weekly …

Qualitative And Quantitative Analyses Of A Life Course Framework To Prevent Victimization Recurrence Among Traumatized Homeless Women, Alexandra Schloesser, David Alatorre

Undergraduate Review

The present study examines the effects of services on women that are rendered by a transitional homeless shelter, Ozanam Manor in Phoenix, Arizona. Specifically, the study aimed to ascertain whether these services have yielded discernible improvements in the circumstances of homeless women. Additionally, the study sought to determine whether certain subgroups of homeless women derive greater benefits from the services provided in comparison to others. The study employed a life-course theory to elucidate whether homeless women who have received assistance from the shelter have acquired the skills to effectively navigate and cope with adverse life circumstances, thereby mitigating the risk …

Team UNified is exploring how the current Finance, HR, and IT reporting structures function across the university. Currently, each unit independently manages how these services are delivered. Team UNified posits the current model may lead to issues such as inconsistent customer service, noncompliance with university policies and procedures, and fewer promotional opportunities within those job families. We plan to interview key stakeholders, review the current organizational structure, analyze internal turnover data, and benchmark against other institutions. Based on the results of our research, we will document the potential risks related to the current model and offer recommendations for where it …

Barriers To Methadone For Hiv Prevention Among People Who Inject Drugs In Kazakhstan, Amanda Rachel Liberman Jan 2024

Barriers To Methadone For Hiv Prevention Among People Who Inject Drugs In Kazakhstan, Amanda Rachel Liberman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: In Eastern Europe and Central Asia, HIV incidence and mortality continue to increase, and this epidemic is concentrated among people who inject drugs (PWID). In Kazakhstan, the prevalence of HIV among PWID is higher than for any other key population. Opioid agonist therapies like methadone are the only evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder and thus are crucial tools for HIV prevention. Though methadone has been provided for free in Kazakhstan since 2008, less than 1% of PWID currently access this service. An intervention to increase methadone scale-up is necessary, and the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment (EPIS) Framework …

Place Matters: The Role Of Public Libraries As Change Agents In Central Appalachia, Jasmyne R. Lewis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The role of public libraries is changing in response to a multitude of influences and trends. The exponential growth of technology as the primary method of information access, funding challenges, changing demographics, and other mitigating factors have forced public libraries to become more than book repositories. Community library leaders and governing board members are faced with challenges such as decreased funding, community division regarding library services, and soaring costs for library materials and services, as they develop and adopt policies and practices to navigate this ever-changing environment.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to collect data from the public …
