A Collaborative Approach To Designing Digital Exhibits At The University Of Dayton, Kayla Harris

Marian Library Faculty Publications

n August 2021, the Marian Library at the University of Dayton physically welcomed public visitors back for the first time since March 2020 with the opening of the exhibit Journeys of Faith: Shrines, Souvenirs and Catholic Tourism. Catholic shrines and festivals attract millions of visitors each year, ranging from pilgrims on spiritual journeys to casual tourists. The exhibit, featuring items from the Marian Library and the US Catholic Special Collection, explored the motivations for Catholic travel; what visitors do at these sites; and the souvenirs they bring back — from handcrafted devotional objects to quirky mementos. After the physical exhibit …

Focusing On Wounded Collective Identity: Toward A Regional Interpretation Of Religious Processes In Central And Eastern Europe, András Máté-Tóth Jul 2022

Focusing On Wounded Collective Identity: Toward A Regional Interpretation Of Religious Processes In Central And Eastern Europe, András Máté-Tóth

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Excerpt: "Defending the value system of Christian Europe, defending the nation with the help of God, and defending the nation against nationalism. Three recent statements from three different countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Such ideas and avowals lay the provocative groundwork to take a closer look to the points of connection between religion and security.

I have two theses to put forward, aiming to make them understandable and discussable. The first is that the region Central and Eastern Europe (hereafter CEE) can be appropriately interpreted in the theoretical framework of wounded collective identity. The primary marker of the region …

“Now I Will Recall The Works Of God”: Allusion And Intertextuality In Sirach 42:15-43:33, Gary Patrick Klump Jul 2022

“Now I Will Recall The Works Of God”: Allusion And Intertextuality In Sirach 42:15-43:33, Gary Patrick Klump

Dissertations (1934 -)

Since the discovery of the Hebrew fragments of Sirach in the Cairo Geniza, the study of influence and intertextuality has been pervasive. However, previous scholars have generally overestimated the occurrence of literary allusion, partially due to the lack of a universally accepted method and nomenclature. This dissertation addresses that issue by investigating Ben Sira’s deployment of culturally constructed registers related to the storm-god theophany, the combat myth, divine speech, and the sapiential register in Ben Sira’s Hymn to the Creator. Using a reconstructed version of the Masada Manuscript, none of the discrete parallels proposed by various scholars held up as …

Catastrophic Christianity: An Iconological Study Of The Messianic Idea In American Protestant Christianity Circa 1900-1940, Adam D. J. Brett Jul 2022

Catastrophic Christianity: An Iconological Study Of The Messianic Idea In American Protestant Christianity Circa 1900-1940, Adam D. J. Brett

Dissertations - ALL

A historically variegated emblem of trust and faith, the messianic idea is the offer of religion to the people for salvation from the coming catastrophe. This dissertation analyzes the messianic idea in "America." The foci of the study are popular messianic figurations that serve as heuristic devices to explicate early 20th century U.S. culture, revealing two ideological impulses that encapsulate collective responses to the anxieties of the age: authoritarian-populism and catastrophic-utopianism. Four case studies, encompassing four different genres of media, define and illustrate these ideological impulses: The Fundamentals, Superman comic books, Bruce Barton's capitalist Christianity, and The Wizard of Oz …

"A New Social Awakening": James Hudson, Florida A. & M. University's Religious Life Program, And The 1956 Tallahassee Bus Boycott, Larry O. Rivers

Florida Historical Quarterly

On May 28, 1956, an event occurred on the Tallahassee campus of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) that fused an educator and religious leader, his teachings on nonviolence, a detestable act of racial discrimination, and the passion of well-prepared university students into a crusade for social change.

Junia As A Female Apostle In Romans 16:7 : A Literature Review Of Relevant Sources From 2010 To Present, Matt H. Hamilton Jun 2022

Junia As A Female Apostle In Romans 16:7 : A Literature Review Of Relevant Sources From 2010 To Present, Matt H. Hamilton

Liberty Theological Review

Ever since Bernadette Brooten’s seminal article in 1977, there has been a heated (and sometimes violent) debate over the identity and function of Junia(s) in Rom. 16:7. While recent years have seen tentative consensus in certain areas, such an outlook belies the deep and nuanced arguments which still exist. This essay will attempt to address a hole in the literature, namely a comprehensive review of the Junia debate since 2010. It will do this by cataloguing the discourse into four categories: the Name-Gender Debate, the Syntax-Grammar Debate, the Rhetoric-Context Debate, and the Apostleship Debate. After this analysis, comments will be …

An Old Testament Biblical Theology Of Wilderness: From Simple Setting To Cosmic Context, Wesley Nottingham Jun 2022

An Old Testament Biblical Theology Of Wilderness: From Simple Setting To Cosmic Context, Wesley Nottingham

Liberty Theological Review

Initially, wilderness may seem to be a concept of little significance in the Old Testament apart from acting as the setting for various events. However, as the Old Testament advances, wilderness becomes a place of vital importance as it is described in cosmic and eschatological language. The narratives within Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy do not form wilderness as a biblical motif in its own right. Rather, they lay the foundation for such a formation to take place later in Scripture. The Pentateuch teaches us that wilderness is to be understood as a place of both divine provision and national formation …

Challenging Colonialism Through Religion: Connections Between Colonialism, Power, And Religion In Colonial Uganda, Ruth Aardsma Benton Jun 2022

Challenging Colonialism Through Religion: Connections Between Colonialism, Power, And Religion In Colonial Uganda, Ruth Aardsma Benton

The Hilltop Review

In the late nineteenth century, Christian beliefs and European ideas spread among the people of present-day Uganda through increasing British involvement in this region and the work of Christian missionaries. However, some Ugandan people also used these ideas to challenge and critique European society and the colonial system itself. This paper explores two ways that this happened. In the case of the Malakites and Bayudaya, a stricter interpretation of the Bible and Christian beliefs led them to see European Christians as hypocritical and to question parts of the colonial system such as European medical care. As demonstrated by Ignatius K. …

Black (Muslim) Lives Matter: African American Muslim Social Activism, Jacob C. Riccioni Jun 2022

Black (Muslim) Lives Matter: African American Muslim Social Activism, Jacob C. Riccioni

The Hilltop Review

Over the past eight years, the Black Lives Matter movement has advocated for marginalized communities within the African American population and called for police brutality and anti-black racism to be abolished. With the rise of Black Lives Matter in contemporary society, I am left wondering, do African American Muslims support the Black Lives Matter movement? There is no simple answer for African American Muslim leaders and laypeople because the Black Lives Matter movement supports LGBTQ+ rights, which some Muslims do not condone, and some rallies have broken out into riots. Religious leaders and scholars are split between supporting Black Lives …
