The Rise Of Asian American Discrimination During The Covid 19 Pandemic, Kelsey June Ramstad, Monifah Erykah Darsaw, William Wesley Phillips, Joshua Natkin

Immigration Scholarship: History, Trends and Development in Global Immigration

Since the start of the pandemic, there has been an increase in discrimination and prejudice against the cultures and identities of Asian Americans. The United States has a long history of discrimination against Asian American immigrants predating the Civil War, from People vs. Hall to the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The modern-day effects have even spread to social media, as shown in an article consisting of a group study of 274 Americans. This paper seeks to uncover the causes and effects of the rise in discrimination against Asian Americans that affects their culture, identity, and diaspora. The paper also …

Bishop Thomas Gumbleton And Pax Christi Usa's Contribution To The 1983 United States Catholic Bishops’ Pastoral Letter, "The Challenge Of Peace: God's Promise And Our Response", Joseph J. Fahey

The Journal of Social Encounters

This essay is a personal reflection on the contribution that Bishop Thomas Gumbleton and Pax Christi USA made to the creation of the U.S. Bishops’ 1983 pastoral letter on peace. It begins with the early history of Pax Christi USA and discusses activities through the years that led to the U.S. Bishops’ letter on peace in 1983. These activities include: Call to Action 1976; Bishops’ Masses for Peace; the Pax Christi USA Disarmament Commission; a discussion of the debate on May 1-3, 1983 on the letter that resulted in a 238-9 vote in favor of the letter; pastoral letters published …

Control Of Scabies In A Boarding School Using 5% Permethrin Applied On Lesion Only, Saleha Sungkar, Sri Wahdini, Aria Kekalih, Risa Rilanda, Hansen Angkasa, Sandra Widaty Jul 2022

Control Of Scabies In A Boarding School Using 5% Permethrin Applied On Lesion Only, Saleha Sungkar, Sri Wahdini, Aria Kekalih, Risa Rilanda, Hansen Angkasa, Sandra Widaty

ASEAN Journal of Community Engagement

Scabies is one of the most neglected tropical skin diseases in Indonesia. It is usually found in overcrowded communities with poor hygiene. The gold standard for scabies treatment is the whole-body topical application of 5% permethrin cream. However, the treatment causes inconvenience and stickiness for a prolonged period. The modification of topical treatment by applying only to the lesion yielded results similar with whole-body topical application. We consider using this mode of treatment to control the disease in a boarding school. The study was conducted from June to August 2019. All students were examined by dermatologists, and individuals who were …

Doing Philosophy Comparatively In India: Classical Indian And Western Philosophical Traditions In Engagement, Joseph Kaipayil Jul 2022

Doing Philosophy Comparatively In India: Classical Indian And Western Philosophical Traditions In Engagement, Joseph Kaipayil

Comparative Philosophy

When Western philosophy was introduced to Indian academia in the late nineteenth century, there arose for Indian philosophers a two-fold need: the need to preserve the self-identity of Indian philosophy and the need to dialogue with Western philosophy. In their attempt to defend the distinctiveness of Indian philosophy, the philosophers of the first half of the twentieth century affirmed that classical Indian philosophy was essentially spiritual. The philosophers of the second half of the twentieth century, however, did not have a compulsion to defend Indian philosophy in the face of Western philosophy. Many of them critiqued the traditional view about …

Coats Of Fire: Rhetorical Identity Negotiations Of Feminist Evangelical Christians, Karly L. Poyner Jul 2022

Coats Of Fire: Rhetorical Identity Negotiations Of Feminist Evangelical Christians, Karly L. Poyner

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This paper examines the identity negotiations of undergraduate students who identify as both feminist and evangelical Christian. Studies of the negotiation of religious identities and social identities have primarily focused on contexts such as sexuality/religion, context/location, and culture/religion. This study, however, focuses on young adults attending private, religious universities while openly identifying as religious and feminist. By pinpointing Christian universities, this study uncovers an additional layer of tension, since these schools “arguably exert a stronger influence over their students than churches, religious denominations, or parachurch ministries” (Gardner, 2017, p. 33). From 14 interviews with feminist Christian students using Ting-Toomey’s INT …

“Under Her Feet”: A Case Study On Motherhood Discourse In An American Muslim Community, Joanna Boudreaux Jul 2022

“Under Her Feet”: A Case Study On Motherhood Discourse In An American Muslim Community, Joanna Boudreaux

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation explores U.S. American Muslim mothers’ communicative experiences of identity. This investigation was undertaken by a Muslim woman researcher and insider to the research topic and founded on the premise that discussions of motherhood within the mainstream U.S. American Muslim community do not center the perspectives and lived experiences of actual mothers. Findings of this study are based on interviews with nine Muslim women who shared detailed thoughts about what Islamic scripture says about motherhood, the role of culture, rights and obligations of different family members, and details about their day-to-day lives. Data was critically analyzed, and themes were …

"To Keep The Church Record And History": The Evolution Of The Church Historian's Office, Cory L. Nimer Jul 2022

"To Keep The Church Record And History": The Evolution Of The Church Historian's Office, Cory L. Nimer

Journal of Western Archives

Authors looking at the development of the field of Mormon history have often evaluated it in terms of historiography—as its progression from the domain of amateurs to the output of academics. However, studies of the composition and development of the larger history profession have focused on the discipline's fragmentation and the formation of an "archival divide" between those that write history and those collecting and preserving its sources. This latter approach provides a useful framework for understanding the evolution of the Church Historian's Office of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from its origins in 1831 to its …

Choices Related To Maximizing Quality Of Life At End Of Life, Theresa Lynn

Dissertations

Humans, including those residing in the United States, can live in denial of their own mortality. Because of this, futile care is sometimes provided, often at great monetary expense and for little or no return in terms of quality or length of life. At least two opportunities exist for making choices regarding care at the end of life in the U.S.: completing advance directives and choosing hospice care.

Small Group Participant Perceptions Of Discipleship Development In Multisite Churches: A Mixed Methods Study, Risha D. Bailey Jul 2022

Small Group Participant Perceptions Of Discipleship Development In Multisite Churches: A Mixed Methods Study, Risha D. Bailey

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Researchers indicated a clear and steady decline in discipleship development within the Body of Christ (Baldwin, 2016; Lynn, 2014; Saunders, 2009). However, the vision for the church, outlined within the Great Commission, remains the same; it warrants the conversion, production, and reproduction of Christ’s disciples in all nations. The small group ministry and multisite churches are at the intersection of discipleship development, leading to effective disciple making. While small groups have been endorsed by many as the premier vehicle that helps the church fulfill its mission, multisite churches are heralded as those experiencing rapid growth with strong communities of faith …

Deification Or Demonization: Jesus’ Post-Resurrection Body In Luke 24:36-40, Shannon Dugger Jul 2022

Deification Or Demonization: Jesus’ Post-Resurrection Body In Luke 24:36-40, Shannon Dugger

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

There has been much scholarly debate about the mythological category of Jesus, arguing that the Lucan portrayal of his post-resurrection body aligns either with Roman-period beliefs about ghosts or resurrected gods. This paper examines Greco-Roman ghost stories, apotheosis narratives, and academic work from both sides of the debate pertaining to Luke 24:36-401 in an attempt to better understand why the passage resists categorization. The paper also introduces theories of liminality and anomy to explain the possible ambiguity in the gospel’s portrayal of Jesus’ body. The paper concludes that Luke 24 is neither clearly a ghost story nor a deification story. …

Is The Process Of Strategy Formulation Different In Complex Organizations?, Donovan A. Mcfarlane, Albert D. Clark, Melissa S. Waters

Southern University College of Business E-Journal

This paper reviews Robert F. Grattan’s Strategic Review: The Process of Strategy Formulation in Complex Organisations (2011), by focusing on one major implied question emerging from the title of the book: “Is the Process of Strategy Formulation Different in Complex Organizations?” The author first examines the theoretical contents of Grattan’s book relative to existing and emerging literature on the strategic process by examining several theories discussed therein. The author examines the purpose and functions of strategy formulation in general and then discusses the contents of each of Grattan’s chapters as they relate this process applied to the Strategic Defence Review …

Cone And Cannon: Black Theology And Visions Of Society, Leslie R. James Jul 2022

Cone And Cannon: Black Theology And Visions Of Society, Leslie R. James

Religious Studies Faculty publications

This essay inspired by the memory of James H. Cone (1938–2018) and Katie G. Cannon (1950–2018), explores the contributions of both scholars to the academy, society, and the public space. Drawing on selected publications, it argues that the recent “passing over” of these two liberationist theologians to other shores of existence warrant significant reflection on their legacies in combating social and other forms of death, reimagining black historical, communal, and eschatological existence, and visions of liberation, justice, and peace for all. They articulated an idea or vision of American society that ran counter to and sought to transcend the dominant …

2022-July-01-New Chair Leading Philosophy And Humanities At Etsu, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – By his own account, Dr. David Harker has taken charge of East Tennessee State University’s Department of Philosophy and Humanities at a time “when it is becoming increasingly apparent that we all need to get better at listening to those with whom we disagree, and then reflecting on our reasons for believing as we do.”

“Philosophy and the humanities,” said Harker, “have a really important role to play in this.”

Named chair of the department this summer, one of Harker’s primary goals is to provide students and members of the community with more opportunities to talk …
