The Transition From Service Member To Veteran Student, Charles Daniel Ensminger

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Colleges may not be prepared to support veteran students transitioning from the military to higher education, resulting in more significant attrition levels for veteran students struggling to adapt to their new surroundings. This qualitative phenomenological study examined the experiences of post-9/11 veteran students as they transitioned from the military to higher education and their involvement and interaction with cocurricular, extracurricular, and nonacademic programs during their first year of college. The research questions focused on how veterans-students described the transition from the military and into their first year of college. The theoretical framework was a combination of Bridges's transitional model, Astin's …

The Lived Experiences Of Group Practice Ownership By Female Licensed Professional Counselors, Ashley Garrett Jan 2022

The Lived Experiences Of Group Practice Ownership By Female Licensed Professional Counselors, Ashley Garrett

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The U.S. counseling profession is mostly female, with many practitioners interested in starting their own business. However, little is known about women’s lived experiences of owning a group counseling practice. An interpretative phenomenological analysis approach was used to explore the lived experiences of six female licensed professional counselors who have owned a group counseling practice for at least 5 years. Phenomenology and feminist theory provided a framework for the study. Eight themes emerged from the study: (a) factors associated with the decision to create a group practice, (b) a continuum of preparatory engagement for group practice ownership, (c) the influence …

How Do Parents Of Typically Developing Children Perceive And Interact With Children With Exceptionalities?, Zurisaday N. Decker

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

The purpose of this study was to examine how parents with children displaying typical development, perceive and interact with children who have exceptionalities or disabilities and explore parents’ openness to having discussions about exceptional children in inclusive classrooms. Given that parents function as foundational sources of knowledge to children in their early childhood years, understanding parents’ perceptions of and interactions with children with disabilities may help to understand how these parents’ children will, in-turn, perceive and interact with classroom peers with disabilities. This line of inquiry is supported by Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, which views microsystems such as the family, …

Labor Union Affiliation And Its Influence On Psychological Well-Being And Depression, Waleed Y. Sami

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the influence labor union affiliation has on psychological well-being and depression. Poverty and income-inequality are large challenges within contemporary American society. Labor unions have historically mitigated income-inequality, promoted solidarity, and decent working conditions. There is growing research on their role as a social determinant of health and mental health. This present study sought to expand this nascent literature base and examine if labor union affiliation influenced psychological well-being (made up of six subscales) and a depression scale through a secondary cross-sectional data analysis, derived from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS). A …

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Fieldwork is an integral portion of occupational therapy education that ensures students have the opportunity to develop basic competencies in real world practice settings. This retrospective, qualitative study investigates occupational therapy assistant students’ experiences of completing a faculty-led (i.e. where faculty served as the primary fieldwork educator) and virtual (i.e., where services were offered in a virtual environment) Level I fieldwork with a community-based peer led behavioral health agency. Twenty-three students …

This report discusses the iterative review process we used to identify close matches for 11 predictors, weak matches for 6 predictors, and no match for 6 predictors. Implications for research are also discussed.

Meaningful Work And Remote Employee Engagement During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Monique Foster Jan 2022

Meaningful Work And Remote Employee Engagement During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Monique Foster

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the remote working trend, causing workplace leaders to be challenged and remote employees to feel meaninglessness and lose interest in their work. The subjective nature of meaningful work and enforced remote work is a relatively recent socioeconomic phenomenon, creating a gap in the literature regarding how middle managers foster meaningful work for employees in a remote work environment. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry study was to understand how middle managers fostered meaningful work for employees in a remote work environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 10 middle managers …

The Effects Of Mand-Model Within Shared Reading Activity On Naming Emotions, Paige Nicole Owens Jan 2022

The Effects Of Mand-Model Within Shared Reading Activity On Naming Emotions, Paige Nicole Owens

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

There is a need for social communication skills to be explicitly taught to people with intellectual disabilities and complex communication needs. The use of naturalistic language interventions is an evidenced based practice shown to increase social communication skills in learners with disabilities. In addition, these interventions have proven successful when embedded into a storybook reading format. There is limited evidence when using both strategies to teach the skill of naming emotions. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a mand-modeling procedure, during storybook reading, to teach middle schoolers with moderate and severe disabilities to name emotions …

The results showed that using aided language modeling within play-based sessions was effective in teaching social communicative intents to students with extensive support and complete communication needs.

Unemployment rates across the globe for persons with disabilities (PWD) are disproportionately higher than rates for the typical population. Individuals with disabilities as a collective are comprised of many domains, including physical disabilities or intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). Statistics pulled from the results of the National Core Indicator’s Adult Consumer Survey showed that only 16% of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) 18 years and older were employed, which corroborates the information provided by the U.S. Department of Labor.
