Assessing The Need For Pre-Mental Health Competencies In Undergraduate Education: Insights From Graduate Faculty Surveys, Kerstin K. Blomquist, Susan J. Wenze, C.J. Eubanks Fleming, Stephanie M. Ernestus

Open Access Fund Publications

Introduction: Despite the value of clinical competencies for masters- and doctoral-level practitioners as well as the tremendous variability in preparedness for graduate school and at graduation from graduate school, there are no competency standards for students pursuing mental healthcare careers prior to graduate study. This study aimed to identify potential pre-mental health competency standards for undergraduates pursuing mental healthcare careers.

Methods: Faculty at masters and doctoral programs in a range of mental healthcare fields were asked to rate their expectations of entry-level competence and the perceived entry-level competence of their first-year, bachelor-level graduate students on 42 sub-competencies derived from the …

Alternative Educational Service Delivery Models For Students Receiving Special Education Services, Nikolas S. Sell Jan 2024

Alternative Educational Service Delivery Models For Students Receiving Special Education Services, Nikolas S. Sell

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The landscape of educational models to service students receiving special education services is changing rapidly. Districts, schools, and individual teachers are welcoming a more diverse set of students and families into their classrooms. In order to meet a wider and more complex set of student needs, educators are finding that traditional school models are not always sufficient to reach each and every student. As such, alternative educational models are a growing consideration for both research and pedagogical practice. Spurred on in part by the necessity of distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, several of these alternative models are seeing wider …

Strategies For Integrating Aging And Older Adulthood Into Counselor Training, Matthew C. Fullen, Jordan Westcott, Kailey Bradley, Natese R. Dockery, Jungeun Lee, Rumbidzai Mushunje, Afroze N. Shaikh Jan 2024

Strategies For Integrating Aging And Older Adulthood Into Counselor Training, Matthew C. Fullen, Jordan Westcott, Kailey Bradley, Natese R. Dockery, Jungeun Lee, Rumbidzai Mushunje, Afroze N. Shaikh

Adultspan Journal

Following recent changes to Medicare mental health law, counselors will have expanded opportunities to work with older adults. Historically, there has been a dearth of counselor training dedicated to counseling older adults, necessitating greater attention to understanding and applying best practices for preparing counselors to serve older adult clients. Looking to professions that have a longer history of serving older adults, specifically gerontology, social work, and geropsychology, we describe approaches to training counselors to work with older adults that may prove helpful for the counseling profession.

Empowering Neurodivergence: The Role Of Positive Language In Challenging Systemic Ableism, Piper Hutson, James Hutson Jan 2024

Empowering Neurodivergence: The Role Of Positive Language In Challenging Systemic Ableism, Piper Hutson, James Hutson

Faculty Scholarship

This review article examines the power of language in shaping perceptions of neurodivergent individuals and the systemic ableism embedded in society. The analysis begins by exploring the historical development of terms like "disabled" and their impact on societal attitudes, focusing on how deficit-based language reinforces exclusion. By contrasting this with strength-based and inclusive language, the article advocates for a shift toward reframing disability in terms of social constructs and accessibility, rather than inherent limitations. Drawing on neuroscientific research, it demonstrates how language shapes neural pathways, reinforcing either stigma or empowerment. The review further critiques euphemisms like "differently abled" for minimizing …

Speech-Language Pathology Faculty Publications

Open access to research findings, syntheses of research, and papers providing guidance on implementing research-based practices is critical for informing policy and practice in special education and related fields. Yet most published articles are behind paywalls and cannot be accessed freely by many practitioners, policymakers, individuals with disabilities and their families, and other interested parties. In this article, we describe the benefits of open-access publishing for researchers and research consumers, as well as different types of open-access publishing–with a particular focus on self-archiving or green open-access publishing. Self-archiving makes papers freely available, with little time burden and no monetary cost …

The Experience Of Blind Mothers In Parenting Children With Disabilities ``, Abeer S. Ali

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

Blind or visually impaired mothers (BVIMs) raising children with disabilities experience an exceptional set of challenges that have been largely overlooked in disability and parenting research and teacher education. Additionally, the researcher sought to understand how these mothers navigate their experiences as they challenge with societal perceptions, institutional barriers, and the daily caregiving demands. The researcher employed a qualitative case study methodology, using in-depth individual interviews and a focus group with six BVIM participants. …

Evaluating The Effects Of Disability On Preferred Proximity, Mia Nicole Mcmahon

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

People with disabilities frequently face the barriers of prejudice, stereotypes, low expectations, and the doubt that they can be adequate romantic partners. This study sought to examine whether the description of a target individual’s proximity to disability would inform the participants’ preference for social closeness or social distance from the target. The target individuals described in the vignettes varied in their proximity to disability in that one target was disabled and did not disclose their identity, the second was likewise disabled and disclosed this, the third was not disabled themself but had a disabled sibling, and the last vignette described …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Ableist Microaggressions, Jennifer M. Cook, Melissa Deroche, Lee Za Ong Jan 2024

A Qualitative Analysis Of Ableist Microaggressions, Jennifer M. Cook, Melissa Deroche, Lee Za Ong

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

The phenomenon of microaggressions is well established within the counseling literature, particularly as it relates to race, ethnicity, gender, and affectual orientation. However, research related to disability or ableist microaggressions is still in its infancy, so counseling professionals have limited information about experiences of disability and ableist microaggressions. The purpose of this qualitative content analysis was to describe participants’ self-reported experiences with ableist microaggressions. Participants (N = 90) had a diagnosed disability and the majority (91.11%) identified as having two or more nondominant identities beyond their disability. We report two categories and 10 themes. While participants were part of …

Ableist Microaggressions, Disability Characteristics, And Nondominant Identities, Melissa Deroche, Lee Za Ong, Jennifer M. Cook

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Microaggressions are commonplace overt and covert forms of discrimination that convey disparaging messages to individuals who hold marginalized identities, including people with disabilities (PWD). Although PWD are a prevalent nondominant identity group in the United States, little is known about the occurrence of ableist microaggressions in this culturally diverse community, including how ableist microaggressions are experienced based on disability characteristics and other nondominant identities. A sample consisting of 201 PWD completed an electronic survey that examined the occurrence of ableist microaggressions based on visibility of disability, type of disability, and nondominant sociocultural identities. We found that PWD have a moderate …

Examining Information Systems Use To Facilitate The Workplace Accommodation Process, Shiya Cao Jan 2024

Examining Information Systems Use To Facilitate The Workplace Accommodation Process, Shiya Cao

Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The workplace accommodation process is often affected by ineffective and inefficient communications and information exchanges among disabled employees and other stakeholders. Information systems (IS) can play a key role in facilitating a more effective and efficient accommodation process since IS has been shown to facilitate business processes and effect positive organizational changes.

OBJECTIVE: Since there is little to no research that exists on IS use to facilitate the workplace accommodation process, this paper, as a critical first step, examines how IS have been used in the accommodation process.

METHODS: Thirty-six interviews were conducted with disabled employees from various organizations. …
