Problem Solving, Decision Making, And Kirton Adaption-Innovation Theory In High-Performance Organizations, Miriam Grace Michael
Problem Solving, Decision Making, And Kirton Adaption-Innovation Theory In High-Performance Organizations, Miriam Grace Michael
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research on high-performing nonprofit boards has indicated a positive relationship between a board's strength and an organization's effectiveness; however, how boards achieve success remains relatively unknown. The Kirton adaption-innovation (KAI) theory was used to examine board members' cognitive styles in relationship to facilitating problem solving and decision making. This nonexperimental, quantitative study included archived nonprofit board data from 2 American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) studies that had addressed the high performance of boards and factors associated with organizational success. A total of 102 randomly selected, high-performing nonprofit board members completed the KAI Inventory, which was used to measure cognitive …
The Relationship Between The Big Five Personality Traits And Authentic Leadership, Bronti Baptiste
The Relationship Between The Big Five Personality Traits And Authentic Leadership, Bronti Baptiste
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Effective leadership, ethical leadership, and leadership emergence have been extensively researched, but there remains a lack of research on the relationship between the big 5 personality traits and authentic leadership. This quantitative study was based on the empirical principles of the big 5 model and guided by the big 5 theory. In addition, this research asked if there was a relationship between the big 5 model and authentic leadership, and which combination of the 5 personality traits best predict authentic leadership. Fifty-five adult participants, employed in various corporations, were recruited from a convenience sample. They rated their leaders by completing …
Preparedness Of Student Affairs Professionals: The Difference Between A Council For Accreditation Of Counseling And Other Related Educational Programs Accredited And Council For The Achievement Of Standards- Best Practice Guided Academic Preparation Programs, Kelly J. Smith
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
A complicated relationship exists among several variables related to entry-level student affairs professionals’ preparedness for their first positions in the field of student affairs. In order to better understand the academic preparation of and the unusually high levels of attrition for entry-level student affairs professionals, their influence on job satisfaction and self-efficacy needed to be examined. The purpose of this study was to determine a difference between Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) best practice guided and Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Program (CACREP) accredited academic preparation programs and intentions to leave the profession of …
Academic Role And Professional Identity Development In Counselor Education, Seth Scott
Academic Role And Professional Identity Development In Counselor Education, Seth Scott
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Professional identity development occurs during graduate training through mentoring, modeling, and academic training by counselor educators. If counselor educators are to transmit this professional identity, they must possess a robust professional identity themselves. Professional identity development theory suggests that the strength of this professional identity may be threatened by a lack of belonging in academia for nontenured or contingent faculty. A correlational research design using a purposeful convenience sample was used to examine the relationship between academic role, employment status, years of experience, and professional identity among counselor educators. The participants (n=50) were counselor educators who subscribe to the CESNET-Listserv. …

Telehealth Experiential Learning: A Pilot Study Of The Client’S Experience, Katrina M. Serwe, Christine Bowman
Journal of Occupational Therapy Education
This research examined the client experience of a student-led occupational therapy pro bono clinic that involved telehealth-delivered treatment sessions. Six clients responded to a survey that included both Likert scale close-ended and open-ended items. The researchers employed descriptive statistics for close-ended items and summarized open-ended responses. All close-ended items had a median score of 4 out of 5, indicating it was easy to communicate, easy to find and use features of the software, and that there were minimal problems with the software in the telehealth delivered sessions. Open ended-responses reflected an overall positive experience.
Correlating Residual Stress With Personal And Professional Characteristics In Aircraft Pilots, Erik Eckblad
Correlating Residual Stress With Personal And Professional Characteristics In Aircraft Pilots, Erik Eckblad
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Every day aircraft pilots must successfully resolve significant inflight situations and then manage the possibility of residual psychological and physiological stress. Previous research has shown primary attention is given to presignificant event training and stress management, however there remains an important gap in the current literature regarding postsignificant event stress within the aviation profession. The purpose of this cross-sectional quantitative study was to use the observational lens of stress theory and survey U.S. pilots who have experienced an inflight emergency, looking for correlation between factors such as age, gender, flight experience, and training against a pilot's self-reported level of residual …
Development And Validation Of A Measure Assessing Blind Patients' Perceptions Of Their Healthcare Providers' Stereotype Content, Nazanin Mina Heydarian
Development And Validation Of A Measure Assessing Blind Patients' Perceptions Of Their Healthcare Providers' Stereotype Content, Nazanin Mina Heydarian
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
People with disabilities (PWDs) constitute about 15-20% of the total population. Health disparities among PWD's are due, in part, to stereotypes about PWDs as incompetent. These stereotypes may lead some healthcare providers (HCP) to patronize PWDs, over-focus on the PWDs' impairments and potentially neglect their presenting problem. Moreover, if the PWD violates stereotypical assumptions, the HCP may actively interfere with the PWD's goals. This Dissertation focused on the blind population because this is a large, stigmatized and understudied subpopulation of PWDs. In Study 1, the content of stereotypes about blind patients in the clinical setting were examined from the patient …
An Evaluation Of Interprofessional Knowledge And Attitudes In Graduate Students From Six Programs In Health Sciences After An Interprofessional Education Workshop Experience, Joanna Velasco
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Interprofessional Education (IPE) occurs when two or more disciplines learn about, from, and with each other to provide interprofessional patient-centered care which ultimately improves patient health care outcomes (WHO, 2010). Through collaboration, students not only bring their own expertise, but are given an opportunity to learn what the other disciplines can offer for the same patient. Although IPE's importance is highly recognized, many universities do not engage in IPE practice because of scheduling difficulties, lack of faculty involvement, implementation challenges for various levels of competency, and uncertainty of how to measure the effectiveness of IPE activities (Johnson et al., 2015). …
Stigmatizing Effects Of Visible Versus Invisible Disabilities, Noel A. Ysasi, Alicia B. Becton, Roy K. Chen
Stigmatizing Effects Of Visible Versus Invisible Disabilities, Noel A. Ysasi, Alicia B. Becton, Roy K. Chen
School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications
The concept of disability is complex and has been interpreted in a variety of ways. The degree to which a disorder is "disabling" depends on the interchange between the condition and other factors including the individual's environment. Modern society's emphasis on self-sufficiency and productivity contribute to the tendency to devalue those who are perceived as unable from these valued characteristics. Research suggests the visibility of a condition may lead to stigmatization, a concept generally associated with feelings of shame due to discontentment and devaluation of others. The authors present literature related to persons with visible and invisible disabilities, and the …

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications
The current study surveyed 86 rehabilitation educators from 27 universities spanning 17 states teaching graduate rehabilitation counseling students regarding to what extent, if any, they address the medical and psychosocial aspects of traumatic brain injury in their curriculum to students. Students of various disciplines who develop life care plans particularly with mild traumatic brain injury must be aware of the symptomatology and prognosis in relation to long-term medical and psychological care needs. Knowing how to distinguish and assess valid subjective complaints, neuropsychological testing, and diagnostic findings regarding traumatic brain injury is key to developing a methodologically reliable and valid plan. …

Positive Approaches To Overcoming The Stigma Of Disability, Noel A. Ysasi, Roy K. Chen, Megan E. Jones
School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications
People with disabilities often face prejudice and discrimination because of their physical and/or mental deviance from norms subjectively defined by society. The stigma associated with having a disability can have a negative impact on the quality of life among this population. The purpose of this paper is to discuss theory-based strategies and approaches that people with disabilities can adopt to overcome and mitigate the adverse effects of a stigmatizing disability. Specifically, the paper uses the hope theory and positive psychology theory as foundations to pave way for weaving spiritual well-being, resilience, and optimism into psychoeducation efforts to help people with …

As the number of United States military veterans reaches above 20 million, the number of serious mental and emotional problem diagnoses, substance use disorders, as well as personal issues are also on the rise. With these diagnoses and struggles, the probability of veterans being involved in the criminal justice system increases. Currently United States veterans account for 9% of the United States population, while also accounting for 8% of the prison and 7% of the jail population.
The Department of Veterans Affairs has several programs and services available to veterans, programs established to promote overall well-being and to serve veterans …
Using Incidental Teaching To Teach Mands To Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Katherine S. Robinson
Using Incidental Teaching To Teach Mands To Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Katherine S. Robinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Children with autism display deficits in three core areas; communication, social interaction, and restrictive and repetitive behaviors. Deficits in communication often manifest in the form of maladaptive behaviors that serve to have the individuals needs and wants met. Additionally, children with autism may have difficulty generalizing learned skills to novel environments and with novel items. Naturalistic teaching procedures, such as incidental teaching, can promote generalization through the use of naturally occurring learning opportunities and reinforcers. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an incidental teaching procedure on the acquisition of both rate of manding behavior as well as a …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined how age and gender influence children's perceptions of play over time. Participants in the study, 39 children between the ages of three and five, answered pretend play questions pulled from the Play Skills Self Report Questionnaire (PSSRQ). Children in the study were enrolled in either a three or four-year-classroom and were assessed in the Fall of 2016 and again in the Spring of 2017. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA's were used to assess the influence that age and gender have on children's perceptions of pretend play. Results showed that children enrolled in the three-year-old classroom did not assess …
Factors Contributing To Substance Abuse Treatment Completion Among Alaska Natives, Courtney Kay Donovan
Factors Contributing To Substance Abuse Treatment Completion Among Alaska Natives, Courtney Kay Donovan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Alaska Native populations have experienced significant struggles with addictions to alcohol and other substances. The Alaska Native population's access to treatment services is riddled with problems. This quantitative study served the purpose of identifying factors that lead to the prediction of successful treatment discharges among Alaska Native clients who received treatment for substance abuse at a treatment center in Alaska. Based on the theoretical framework of Marlatt's relapse prevention theory, using archival data, as well as a cross-sectional, quantitative research design, predictive variables of the efficacy of substance use treatment among outpatient clients (N = 278) were examined. Multiple regression …

Parents' Perceptions Of Transition And Postsecondary Services For Their Children With Disabilities, Elizabeth Joyce Strong
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Students with intellectual and other disabilities who age out of transition programs or graduate from high school may experience marginalization as young adults. There exists scant literature on the perceptions of parents about access to employment and services for their adult children with disabilities. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how parents perceived educational services, financial burdens, social isolation, and lack of access to employment for their children with intellectual and other disabilities. Critical disability theory and transformational theory constituted the study's conceptual framework. The research questions concerned how parents perceived access to services related to financial …

After creating the Career Resilience for Adults with Disabilities Scale (CRADS), two studies were conducted to evaluate the scale. …
The Positive Effects On Attitude Among High School Students Towards Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Mario Castillo-Urbina
The Positive Effects On Attitude Among High School Students Towards Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Mario Castillo-Urbina
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Inclusion in the classroom requires that the local education agency provide services (i.e., direct, related) to support each student’s needs. The philosophy guiding inclusion is that these services will allow each student to keep pace or catch-up with his or her typically developing peers (Elkins, Van Kraayenoord, & Jobling, 2003). Students’ attitudes towards their peers with disabilities have been researched and reported through the years however, little work has examined these attitudes in a physical education setting (Archie & Sherrill, 1989; Block & Malloy, 1998; Block & Zeman, 1996; Tripp, French, & Sherrill, 1995). Researchers have reported that individuals avoid …

A Comparison Of The Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test And The Wechsler Scales, Samantha Denhart
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
The present study was designed to determine the correlation between a commonly used cognitive ability test (i.e., Wechsler) and a verbal memory test (i.e., Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test) by analyzing archival data from a clinical sample of adults. Many researchers have continued to establish the relationship between cognitive ability, or IQ, and learning and memory skills; however, there is little research regarding when differences between IQ and memory scores are statistically significant. Results of this study indicated 17 of 20 IQ index/memory correlations were statistically significant and a series of simple regressions generated standardized residuals. These residuals generated confidence bands …

From War To Home: The Systematic Issues Operation Enduring And Iraqi Freedom Veterans Face Transitioning With Ptsd, Tiffany D. Ware
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the perceptions of Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom veterans with PTSD, who are transitioning from active duty to civilian life, regarding their participation in the Disabled Transition Assistance Program.
Methodology: The methodology for this research study will be qualitative from a phenomenological perspective. When thinking of research as it pertains to qualitative methods, it is appropriate to use when a researcher is trying to study the lived experiences of individuals (Flipp, 2014; Patton, 2015). This method will describe perceptions of Operation Enduring and Iraqi Freedom veterans with PTSD, who are …
