Planetary Health: Scientific Frontier For Harmonious Coexistence Between Humans And Nature, Zhu Yongguan, Jue Liu, Hua Zheng, Yaoyang Xu, Weiqi Zhou, Hongliang Zhang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Against the backdrop of deeply intertwined global environmental change, biodiversity loss, and health risks, Planetary Health is emerging as a new interdisciplinary field that is gradually becoming the scientific frontier for understanding harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. This study systematically reviews the evolution of Planetary Health from the “Planetary Boundaries” theory to a comprehensive disciplinary framework. Through a paradigmatic comparison with concepts such as public health, global health, and One Health, it reveals that the core breakthrough of Planetary Health lies in redefining human health as an endogenous variable embedded within the stability of Earth’s natural systems. Three major …

From Resource Mapping To Mechanism Identification: A Lunar Tethered-Satellite Exploration System And China’S Strategic Opportunities, Wei Yong, Zhiping He, Yanchu Yang, Ke Wang, Junqiang Zhu
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Lunar exploration is undergoing a paradigm shift from resource mapping to mechanism identification. Key processes, such as the modulation of volatiles by magnetic anomalies and the contribution of Earth wind to surface hydration, require strictly synchronized observations of magnetic-field gradients, particle fluxes, spectrally detected volatiles, and subsurface hydrogen within the same spatiotemporal window. However, a still-unfilled “near-lunar-surface intermediate layer” gap exists between conventional single-spacecraft orbiters and landed rovers: the capability for multi-altitude, multi-parameter, strictly synchronized process observations. A tethered dual-satellite system, consisting of a main satellite and a subsatellite connected by a 5–10 km short tether, naturally provides a dual-altitude …

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Addressing the current limitations in forestry and grassland research, particularly in cross-scale system cognition, complex process mechanism representation, and multi-scenario simulation, this study proposes an artificial intelligence-driven paradigm reconstruction framework, to shift the research model from experience-oriented approaches toward data- and intelligence-driven integration. On this basis, the study systematically establishes a multidimensional mapping between artificial intelligence and forestry and grassland research across research objects, processes, and objectives, and clarifies their intrinsic coupling mechanisms and technical pathways. Furthermore, it develops a foundational capability system to support the new paradigm from four key dimensions: data, computing power, models, and applications. By examining …

Progress And Prospective Of New Pollutants Study, Ruan Ting, Chunyang Liao, Yawei Wang, Maoyong Song, Yaqi Cai, Guibin Jiang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The governance of new pollutants has been becoming a critical strategic demand for the high-quality development of China. The policy will be further advanced during the coming National 15th Five-Year Plan period. Nevertheless, significant challenges remain in aspects such as list of controlled chemicals, standard development, measurement methods, alternative approaches, and remediation techniques. Existing experience in addressing traditional pollutants remains insufficient to adequately address the concealed and complex ecological and/or health risks associated with new pollutants. Thus, a strengthening of basic research is the optimal approach to tackling these challenges and avoiding detours. To better identify the critical scientific challenges …

Founder Teams, Social Networks, And New Firm Performance, Joyce Zhou, Jun Yu, Arturo Rodriguez, Josh Tolleson
Journal of Business & Entrepreneurship
Research has shown that entrepreneurs’ social networks have a positive effect on the performance of new business ventures. However, much of the research in this area has focused on the individual entrepreneur, even though it is recognized that most new business ventures are started by a team of entrepreneurs. Integrating theories of social networks, top-management teams, and the resource-based view, this study focuses on the effect of the characteristics of entrepreneur teams on entrepreneurial social networks as well as the availability of resources made possible by these social networks. It also examines the potential for team cohesion to moderate the …

Deviant By Design: How Institutional Forces And Analyst Scrutiny Shape Financial Policy Deviance And Convergence, Jonathan W. Hensley
Deviant By Design: How Institutional Forces And Analyst Scrutiny Shape Financial Policy Deviance And Convergence, Jonathan W. Hensley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This dissertation explores the institutional and economic forces shaping corporate financial policy, specifically examining why firms deviate from industry-typical leverage and cash holdings, whether they converge toward these norms, and the performance implications of such trajectories. I develop a framework, rooted in institutional theory and dynamic capital structure literature, that characterizes firms with extreme, multi-year financial policies as "deviant by design." While managers might maintain non-normative leverage or cash positions for firm-specific efficiency gains, these choices often clash with established industry templates, leading to legitimacy costs and institutional pressure for conformity.
Using a longitudinal panel of U.S. public firms from …
Material Affecting Design (Mad): How Living Biomaterials Reshape Computational Design Through Biological Transformation, Abolhassan Pishahang
Material Affecting Design (Mad): How Living Biomaterials Reshape Computational Design Through Biological Transformation, Abolhassan Pishahang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
Living biomaterials grow during fabrication, making strategy selection a design problem distinct from conventional form-making. This dissertation investigates how Pleurotus ostreatus mycelium and Triticum aestivum plant roots reshape the computational design process through their biological behavior. The central argument is that when a designer works with living matter, the material participates in forming, changing the decisions made, the strategies chosen, and the framework required. This relationship between biological transformation and computational design is named the Material Affecting Design (MAD) framework. The research was conducted through a research-through-design methodology grounded in American pragmatist philosophy, particularly the work of Dewey, James, and …

Community Energy Storage: A Framework For Enhanced Energy Trading And Cost Efficiency, Bassam Al-Hanahi, Aziz
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into modern electricity grids introduces substantial challenges, primarily due to their inherent variability and the critical need for real-time supply-demand balancing. Community Battery Storage system (CBSS) has emerged as an effective strategy to address these challenges, enhancing grid stability and providing localized economic benefits through optimized energy storage and management. This paper presents a novel energy trading framework that prioritizes community welfare by balancing the reduction of user energy costs with CBSS revenue generation. The proposed model employs a multi-objective optimization approach, utilizing the epsilon-constraint method to strike an optimal balance between minimizing …

Fifty Nine Realty Llc V. Gottesman
Fifty Nine Realty Llc V. Gottesman
All Decisions
The court dismissed this nonpayment petition because the landlord LLC failed to comply with the publication requirements of Limited Liability Company Law § 206 at the time the proceeding was commenced. The landlord had published notice of its articles of organization for only 5 consecutive weeks rather than the 6 required by statute. The court rejected the landlord's argument that this noncompliance is curable nunc pro tunc, relying on controlling Appellate Division authority.

In this nonpayment proceeding, Respondent moved to dismiss on the ground that the building was occupied in violation of Multiple Dwelling Law § 301 due to HPD violations and a DOB partial vacate order for illegal conversion of the basement. The court granted the motion, finding the building substantially deviated from its certificate of occupancy and that under GVS Properties v. Vargas, the landlord is barred from collecting rent for the entire building.
Ai-Powered Knowledge Engines As Research Infrastructure For Systematic Knowledge Discovery, Gary Welz
Ai-Powered Knowledge Engines As Research Infrastructure For Systematic Knowledge Discovery, Gary Welz
Publications and Research
This paper proposes knowledge engines as a framework for understanding how intelligent systems — both human and artificial — systematically discover, integrate, and generate knowledge. We argue that history’s greatest scientific minds functioned as knowledge engines, processing information through iterative cycles of ingestion, analysis, synthesis, and communication, guided by curiosity and willingness to challenge established beliefs.
We propose a taxonomy of nine integrated capabilities — ingestion, digestion, analysis, calculation, comparison, connection, association, analogy, and multimodal communication — that any serious knowledge engine must combine systematically. The argument is deliberately integrative: achieving ambitious research goals requires orchestrating all nine capabilities within …

Many neurological diseases impact specific brain regions despite widespread expression of the disease-related protein. Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) primarily affects the cerebellum, though Ataxin-1 (ATXN1) is widely expressed. We previously showed that intensified interaction between mutant ATXN1 and Capicua (CIC) drives SCA1 pathogenesis in the cerebellum, whereas ATXN1 loss augments amyloid β production in the hippocampus and cortex. CIC, however, forms a complex with ATXN1 and its paralog, Ataxin-1-like (ATXN1L), yet knockout of either yields completely different phenotypes. To determine whether this could be due to CIC having two isoforms, we generated mice bearing either the long (CIC-L) or …

Catalogue Of The Water Striders (Hemiptera: Gerridae) Of Mississippi, Chase G. Fry, Patricia L.S. Wooden
Midsouth Entomologist
Water striders (Hemiptera: Gerridae) are skating aquatic insects with piercing-sucking mouthparts that opportunistically feed on prey trapped by surface tension. The presence or absence of water striders and other aquatic Hemiptera in water systems may be important indicators of water quality. Despite their importance, the last aquatic Hemiptera checklist for the state was published in 1988. Since this publication, humans have altered waterways to meet their needs, and Gerridae taxonomy has continued to evolve. This study aims to create a current checklist of Gerridae, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the species found in Mississippi before aquatic habitats are …

Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
Thirty years after Moroccan civil servants were granted a specific legal and administrative framework, the General Statute of Public Service naturally prompted reflection and debate among practitioners and academics. In this spirit, the Public Law Department of the Faculty of Legal, Economic, and Social Sciences at Hassan II University organized a colloquium on May 12–13, 1989, to examine the public service, focusing on elements of continuity and change. Situated at the intersection of legal, cultural, sociological, and political dimensions, the subject proved particularly complex. The colloquium explored this complexity through three main themes: the structures of public service, the legal …

The Evolution Of The Legal Status Of Civil Servants, Mohamed Aliat
Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
Before independence, the Moroccan public service comprised approximately 400 separate grades, each governed by its own specific statute, resulting in significant disparities and administrative complexity. After independence, authorities faced the challenge of restructuring, harmonizing, and adapting administrative frameworks to new realities. Morocco adopted the "pragmatic localized reform method" rather than a comprehensive systematic overhaul. This approach began with the enactment of the General Statute of Public Service in 1958, followed by a transitional period of careful assessment. This process culminated in the 1967 cadre reform, later complemented by the 1975 reform, marking a gradual but significant evolution in the legal …

Statutory Guarantees Of Civil Servants, Amal Mourji
Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
This paper examines the statutory guarantees of civil servants through a comparative analysis of two contrasting public service models: open and closed systems. In open systems, public employment is based on contracts, allowing mobility between public and private sectors, which enriches both mindsets and administrative structures. In closed systems, civil servants enter through competitive examinations and remain in public service until retirement, with strict separation between public and private sectors. They are governed by a legal and regulatory statute rather than contracts. While neither system exists in absolute form, they serve as simplified models. The author cites Anglo-Saxon countries (notably …

Some Reflections On The Municipal Public Service, Abderrahim Fadil
Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
This paper highlights the significant gap between extensive research on state public service and the scarcity of studies on municipal public service (MPS), which remains poorly understood. The creation of MPS in Morocco is linked to the decentralization movement initiated by the Municipal Charter of September 30, 1976, with both themes being closely intertwined. Without a functioning MPS, decentralization at the local level risks being ineffective. In countries like Spain and France, territorial public service has become a cornerstone of local political-administrative systems. In Morocco, MPS is relatively recent, reflecting the growing role of municipalities in national life. This study …
