Can Lower(Ed) Expert Opinions Lead To Better Consumer Ratings?: The Case Of Michelin Stars, Xingyi Li, Yiting Deng, Puneet Manchanda, Bert De Reyck
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Expert opinion exerts tremendous influence on the purchase journey, but its effect on overall consumer experience is ambiguous because it can give rise to both “expectation” and “reputation” effects. This paper explores the effect of expert opinions on consumer experience via the lens of consumer reviews in the restaurant industry, where the expert opinions are conveyed by Michelin stars. The paper uses a unique data set based on the Michelin Guide for Great Britain & Ireland from 2010 to 2020. The data include consumer reviews on TripAdvisor for all restaurants that were awarded Michelin stars during this period and a …

The emergence and re-emergence of mosquito-borne arbovirus (MBV) diseases pose a rapidly expanding global health threat fueled by the convergence of multiple ecologic, economic, and social factors, including climate change, land use, poverty, deficiencies of water storage and sanitation, and limitations of vector control programs. On December 6, 2023, the Wellcome Trust and the University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy held a meeting titled "An integrated approach to mosquito-borne arboviruses: a priority research agenda."The meeting comprised presentations, panels, and facilitated discussions aimed at describing the state of the field, highlighting recent accomplishments, identifying novel strategies, and …

Hernia Recurrence Risk Matters More Than Mesh Type To Patients Undergoing Ventral Hernia Repair, Stephanie Martinez Ugarte, Mokunfayo O Fajemisin, Chelsea J Guy-Frank, Dalya M Ferguson, Jonah J Stulberg, Lillian S Kao, Julie L Holihan
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Introduction: Patients' perceptions about synthetic mesh for ventral hernia repair (VHR) may stem from a lack of knowledge of risks. We assessed patients' threshold for accepting the risk of hernia recurrence to avoid synthetic mesh.
Methods: Patients ≥18 y old with prior or upcoming VHR viewed a one-time video decision aid describing recurrence risk with biologic versus synthetic mesh. Patients chose between these options using a probability trade-off (PTO) technique, varying hernia recurrence rate with biologic mesh. Based on randomized trials, the recurrence rate using synthetic mesh was 9%. The PTO score was the recurrence rate (0%-100%) at which patients …

Background
Right aortic arch with an aberrant left subclavian artery arising from a Kommerell diverticulum is the most common form of vascular ring. We report the outcomes of plication and pexy of the diverticulum in addition to division of the left-sided ligamentum to treat this lesion in children.
Methods
Forty-four patients were included in the study; 22 patients underwent division of the ligamentum arteriosum alone, while the other half underwent plication and/or pexy of the Kommerell diverticulum in addition to division of the ligamentum. The primary outcome of interest was reintervention for persistent symptoms following the initial operation. The other …

A Mystery Caller Study On Pain Management Options For Intrauterine Device Placement, Mitali Sharma
Student Scholarship
Objectives: To understand whether clinics present pain management options for intrauterine device (IUD) placement over the phone and whether these options align with current evidence for effective pain control during placement. Study design: We used a mystery shopper approach and a standardized call script to collect information from a diverse, purposive sample of 100 clinics listed on www.bedsider.org. Results: We reached responsive personnel at 90 of the 100 selected clinics, of whom 32 (36%) would not provide information about pain control for IUD placement by phone or to non-established patients. Of the 58 clinics that provided information, four (6.9%) reported …

Toward The Professionalization Of Executive Coaching: A Delphi Study Of The Requisite Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities For Coaching Executives To Behave Ethically, Richard R. Fletcher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem explored through this research involved the lack of consensus on executive coaching knowledge, skills, and abilities for facilitating ethical behaviors on the part of business executives. This problem led the researcher to employ a mixed-method Delphi study to explore professional executive coach perceptions concerning the establishment of a governing body overseeing the activity of executive coach consulting and to assess the knowledge, skills, and abilities perceived as fundamental to executive coaching. The researcher focused the research approach through a systematic, iterative research design where a panel of six experts in the field of professional executive coaching located in …

Leadership Emergence Among Black Urban Women Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence: A Qualitative Exploration, Dawn H. Benton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study proposed to identify leadership strategies that assisted intimate partner violence-impacted Black women in urban areas to become leaders in their homes and communities as perceived by mental health professionals. Nine mental health professionals and counselors from an Ohio urban area completed a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview to provide data about Black women in intimate partner violence-impacted relationships living in a metropolitan area in Ohio. Deprived of valuable leadership resources and gifts that the women can offer their families and communities, investigators omitted the women's plights in their studies. Four research questions framed this qualitative case study design …

A Culturally-Tailored Framework For Improving Patient Activation Within A Digital Solution: Supporting Black Pregnant Women With Hypertensive Disorders, Morgan Foreman
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Digital health solutions, like mobile apps, are popular for managing health conditions such as pregnancy and hypertension. Although these tools have great potential, they struggle with sustaining long-term patient engagement, with 80% of users often only logging into a mobile application twice (Fleming et al., 2018; Meyerowitz-Katz et al., 2020; Pfammatter et al., 2017; Wang et al., 2017). App development often uses one-size fits-all methods and can benefit from the inclusion of differences across user populations (Boucher & Raiker, 2024; Budak et al., 2024). Cultural-tailoring has improved adherence to healthcare interventions, with these tailored interventions proving to be more effective …

Mindful: Machine Intelligence Towards Neuropsychiatric Data For Unified Learning, Zehan Li
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Suicide remains a leading cause of preventable death, with particularly high burden in underserved populations treated in safety-net psychiatric hospitals. Early detection is challenged not by the absence of data, but by the informational opacity of psychiatric clinical narratives which is unstructured, subjective, and heterogeneous records that resist traditional analytic methods. This article-based dissertation addresses this challenge by developing an integrated MINDFUL framework that combines clinically validated annotation, advanced machine learning, and explainable AI to enable accurate, interpretable suicide phenotyping in high-acuity psychiatric settings. The first study created a gold-standard annotated corpus of psychiatric notes labeled for suicidal ideation, suicide …

Telogen Effluvium And Anesthesia Considerations: A Case Report., Elizabeth Johnson-Gray, Samantha A Currier, Hanen Fernandez, Matt Brown, Matthias Franzen
Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
Telogen effluvium is a form of non-scarring hair loss characterized by premature shedding of hair. Pathophysiologically, telogen effluvium occurs when a significant number of hair follicles prematurely enter the telogen phase, resulting in excessive shedding. The exact mechanism is unclear, but it is believed to involve alterations in the hair follicle's growth cycle, possibly mediated by illness, infection, major surgery, low protein intake, or hormonal changes. Some medications can also be linked to this disease, such as beta blockers, carbamazepine, and vitamin A. When affected hairs are in the resting phase, noticeable hair shedding occurs. Our patient was a 61-year-old …

Cardiovascular Manifestations Of Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum., Aimee Willett, Vivek V Jasti, Sean M Muir, Jay Anderson
Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare systemic disorder of elastic fibers. The most common manifestations include characteristic papules and ocular angioid streaks. Cardiovascular complications include peripheral arterial disease, hypertension, premature coronary artery disease, and cerebrovascular disease. These associations are secondary to dystrophic elastic fibers, resulting in the calcification of small- to medium-sized arteries. We present the case of a 22-year-old otherwise healthy female patient diagnosed with PXE following a biopsy of a neck lesion. Ophthalmologic evaluation revealed characteristic angioid streaks. The patient also reported early satiety and leg cramping, which prompted referral to gastroenterology and cardiology. Further investigation raised concern …
A Phenomenological Study On The Enabling Role Of Digital Competencies In Heutagogical Learning Contexts, Jennifer Dean
A Phenomenological Study On The Enabling Role Of Digital Competencies In Heutagogical Learning Contexts, Jennifer Dean
Masters
This study examines how digital competencies contribute to independent learning within heutagogical contexts in higher education. The research was conducted to address assumptions that digital competence directly enables learner autonomy, despite limited understanding of this empirical relationship in practice. A qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological approach was employed, using nine semi-structured interviews to explore learners’ lived experiences in digitally mediated environments. The findings indicate that self-directed learning is primarily driven by intrinsic motivation and often occurs unconsciously. Digital competencies were found to act as enabling factors by facilitating access, flexibility and engagement, however, their influence on autonomy was context-dependent rather than deterministic. …
Naqbu: Cosmological Undercurrents In Sumer And Akkad, Fiona Eirene Andrews
Naqbu: Cosmological Undercurrents In Sumer And Akkad, Fiona Eirene Andrews
Theses and Dissertations
The concepts of primordial incomprehensibility, ordered creation, and the liminal chaos between them, form a foundational framework in Mesopotamian intellectual culture. The distinctive ways in which these concepts manifest in Sumero-Akkadian cultures suggest a systematic cosmological substructure — characterized by the paradoxical, cyclical, and co-creative relationships between forces such as Infinity and measure, generation and destruction, and definition and obscurity — that remains insufficiently examined in current scholarship. Drawing from diverse corpus of Mesopotamian creative works, Kabbalistic exegesis, and post-modern scholarship, this thesis seeks to elucidate the essential dynamics within that substructure. By proposing a semiotic hermeneutical strategy attuned to …

Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos: Hip-Hop And The Carceral State In The East San Francisco Bay Area, William Maclane Hull
Theses and Dissertations
“Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos: Hip-Hop and the Carceral State in the East San Francisco Bay Area” explores the histories of urban redevelopment and deindustrialization, racialized poverty, police and the carceral system, and hip-hop culture in Oakland and other parts of the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. It explores East Bay politics and urban development in the 1900s, which resulted in the flight of industries and wealthy white residents to the suburbs and the erosion of public services. Black community organizations and funk music alike articulated the damages done by these processes in the 1960s. Subsequently, politicians and …

‘If You Design For The Future To Treat Of Witches:' Diabolic Service Magicians, Astrologers, And Witchcraft In John Dunton's Athenian Mercury, 1690-1697, Lauren Rebecca Rowe
Theses and Dissertations
Originating in the print stands of seventeenth-century London, the Athenian Mercury enjoyed a nearly miraculous seven-year run time as the most well-known and successful anonymous question and answer periodical of its time. Conceptualized and produced by bookseller John Dunton, the Mercury existed as an interface for intellectual discourse readily accessible to men and women. Kept entirely anonymous on the part of the author and reader, the intellectually curious could write questions to the Mercury and receive answers in turn on a vast variety of subjects twice a week. Aside from the more expected queries on science, love, mathematics, and religion, …

Democracy’S Sanctuary: Highlander Folk School’S Campaign For Justice From The Labor Movement To The Civil Rights Movement, 1932-1962, Alexandra Elizabeth Bethlenfalvy
Theses and Dissertations
A sanctuary for political democracy, the Highlander Folk School was established in 1932 as a center for community activism, serving as the leading labor union organizing site in rural Tennessee during the Great Depression. With social unrest swelling in the 1930s, Highlander empowered workers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to demand improved conditions and union representation across the anti-labor South. During World War II, however, as ranks of organized labor grew and civil rights activism in the South accelerated, Highlander convened interracial workshops, beginning in 1944, at a time when racial segregation was enforced by law and …
