Antiinflammatory Mechanisms Of Barley-Based Functional Foods Beyond Diabetes Management, Hafiz Ghulam Muhu Din Ahmed, Adnan Noor Shah, Muhammad Ahtasham Mushtaq, Xiaomeng Yang, Jiazhen Yang, Xia Li, Li’E Yang, Xiaoying Pu, Yawen Zeng

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This review article investigated the antiinflammatory properties of barley, emphasizing its benefits beyond diabetes management. Barley, historically valued for its nutritional and medicinal properties, is rich in bioactive compounds such as beta-glucans, phenolic acids, and flavonoids. These compounds are known for their significant antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities. This study highlights the multifaceted mechanisms through which barley reduces systemic inflammation, including the enhancement of gut microbiota composition, the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids, and the modulation of immune responses. Beta-glucans in barley lower cholesterol, and regulate glucose levels, while phenolic acids and flavonoids inhibit proinflammatory enzymes and cytokines, thereby reducing …

Selecting An Internal Carbon Price For Academic Institutions, Alexander R. Barron, Dimitra Prassa Jun 2025

Selecting An Internal Carbon Price For Academic Institutions, Alexander R. Barron, Dimitra Prassa

Environmental Science and Policy: Faculty Publications

Many businesses have adopted internal carbon prices (ICPs) to help drive smarter business decisions, innovation, and emissions reductions. The objective of this white paper is to provide a framework that institutions, particularly those in higher education, can use as they think about selecting a price in the context of their own goals for an ICP.

Second Nature’s recent 2025 Carbon Markets and Offsets guidance recommends that: “colleges and universities develop a climate action strategy that includes some type of internal carbon pricing, either as a mechanism to inform climate-positive decision-making or as a mechanism for generating revenue estimates for decarbonization …

The Clean Water Act And Avoidance Creep, Jack H.L. Whiteley Jun 2025

The Clean Water Act And Avoidance Creep, Jack H.L. Whiteley

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

In Sackett v. EPA, the Supreme Court set out a test for the Clean Water Act’s jurisdiction over wetlands. The Act, the Court held, protects only those wetlands that have a continuous surface connection to relatively permanent bodies of water like streams, rivers, and lakes. If the connection lies below the surface, or is at the surface but discontinuous, the wetlands are presumed to fall outside the Act’s protections. The ruling, which abruptly curtailed how each administration since the 1970s had understood the Clean Water Act’s jurisdiction, has generated persuasive criticism from environmental scholars. In this Essay, prepared for the …

Staff Education To Educate Healthcare Providers On Effective Communication And Support Strategies For Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Njideka Ajemba Jun 2025

Staff Education To Educate Healthcare Providers On Effective Communication And Support Strategies For Child Sexual Abuse Victims, Njideka Ajemba

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

With this project, I sought to enhance the quality of care provided to child sexual abuse (CSA) survivors by improving healthcare providers’ skills in trauma-informed communication and support strategies. The project was undertaken at a large, private behavioral health facility located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, where an assessment of the practice environment revealed a critical gap in provider training. This gap often resulted in missed indicators of abuse, limited emotional support, and poor therapeutic outcomes for children affected by sexual abuse-related trauma. To address this, the project implemented a targeted educational intervention grounded in current evidence …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Students’ perceptions of their likelihood to graduate are important determinants of their academic engagement, yet these perceptions remain understudied. This study, which is based on the 2021 Monitoring the Future survey of 8th- and 10th-grade students in the United States, uses machine learning algorithms to identify the most important factors that influence these perceptions. Among the tested models, random forest provided the best classification performance. Using permutation-based feature importance, we identified frequent participation in schoolwork, maternal education, paternal education, and homework completion as the most important predictors of students’ graduation perceptions. These results highlight the importance of targeted and well-coordinated …

Descriptive Sensory Analysis Of Gluten-Containing And Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookies Available In The Marketplace, Eniola Ola, Victoria J. Hogan, Han-Seok Seo

Food Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Limited research has systematically compared the detailed sensory profiles of commercially available gluten-containing (C) and gluten-free (F) cookies using trained panelists. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive sensory lexicon for C and F chocolate chip cookies and identify key sensory attributes that differentiate them. Seven professionally trained panelists created a lexicon of 33 attributes spanning aroma, flavor, basic taste, texture, and residual property. Using this lexicon, a descriptive analysis was conducted on 12 C and 12 F cookie samples. Multivariate analysis of variance revealed significant differences between the two groups across the 33 sensory attributes (p < 0.05). A mixed model analysis showed that C cookies had higher intensities of chocolate-related and sweet aroma complex notes, while F cookies exhibited stronger nutty, artificial, and off-note flavors. In terms of texture, F cookies were higher in toothpack and powdery mouthcoat, while C cookies displayed more melt-in-mouth characteristics. Principal component analysis and agglomerative hierarchical clustering revealed three distinct clusters of test samples within both crispy and chewy cookie types, with some F cookies closely aligning with C profiles. These findings, along with the developed lexicon, provide a valuable foundation for enhancing the sensory appeal and quality of gluten-free chocolate chip cookies.

The Impact Of Loper Bright V. Raimondo: An Empirical Review Of The First Six Months, Robin Kundis Craig Jun 2025

The Impact Of Loper Bright V. Raimondo: An Empirical Review Of The First Six Months, Robin Kundis Craig

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

One of the most impactful decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2023–2024 term was Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, which overruled the forty-year-old administrative law doctrine of Chevron deference. This doctrine allowed federal agencies to interpret ambiguities in the statutes that they administer. Courts cited Chevron over 18,000 times in its forty-year existence, or roughly 450 times a year—more than once a day, on average. Small wonder, then, that in the first six months after the Supreme Court decided Loper Bright, courts cited it more than 400 times. This article provides an empirical review of what courts are doing with …

Water Flowing Down Wall Street, Vanessa Casado Pérez Jun 2025

Water Flowing Down Wall Street, Vanessa Casado Pérez

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Water scarcity is a perennial problem with dire consequences for the United States and governments around the world. A lack of adequate water resources is a systematic cause of environmental harm, economic damage, and societal division. Climate change has exacerbated these problems making water even more valuable and essential. Financial actors have turned water into the new oil. These large financial actors profiteer from buying and selling water without any interest in its actual use as an input of production. Instead, they typically seek to hold these rights until dire situations, like droughts and fires, cause temporary, but large, spikes …

Memory Matters: The Journals Of Cecilia Maria O’Conway And Rosetta Landry White, Betty Ann Mcneil

Vincentian Studies

Betty Ann McNeil describes the journals of two of the very first Sisters of Charity, Cecilia Maria O’Conway and Rosetta (Rose) Landry White, who knew Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and her family. Cecilia was the first to join Elizabeth in Baltimore as a Sister of Charity in early December 1808 at age twenty-one. McNeil tells us, “Cecilia taught at St. Joseph’s School until missioned to Philadelphia (1814) and New York (1817)” before withdrawing from the Sisters of Charity in 1823. At age twenty-five, Rose joined Elizabeth in late June 1809 and served as mother of the Sisters of Charity after …

John Timon, The Vincentian: Filling Out The Biography Of The Founding Bishop Of Buffalo, John E. Rybolt

Vincentian Studies

John Rybolt traces the biographical information we have about John Timon and talks about the bishop's career and his lifelong devotion to the Vincentians, even when he was painfully separated from the Congregation because he was forced to join the episcopacy against his will. At the time, the Congregation's Rules stated that Vincentians could not stay within the community if they accepted church office, especially not without receiving the approval of the superior general. But Timon's appointment could hardly have been refused, since it came directly from the pope.

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton As A Mystic, Sung-Hae Kim Jun 2025

Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton As A Mystic, Sung-Hae Kim

Vincentian Studies

Sung-Hae Kim describes how three key spiritual experiences in Elizabeth Seton’s life confirm her identity as a mystic according to William James’s four characteristics of the mystic state. These traits are ineffability, noetic quality, transiency, and passivity, and such experiences must lead to union with God. Elizabeth wrote about these experiences, which occurred when she was fourteen in New Rochelle, New York; twenty-nine in the lazaretto of Livorno, Italy; and sometime near her death at the age of forty-six in Emmitsburg. As Kim says, these “purify[ied] her ability to love, leading to serene peace and union with God and his …

From Assembly Lines To The Open Road: Predicting Rare Events In Autonomous Systems, Ruwan Wickramarachchi Jun 2025

From Assembly Lines To The Open Road: Predicting Rare Events In Autonomous Systems, Ruwan Wickramarachchi

Publications

In the age of embodied AI and smart automation, autonomous agents are increasingly deployed in high-stakes, real-world environments. Ensuring the robustness and resilience of these systems in the face of rare but critical failure events is essential for their safe and reliable operation. Accurate forecasting of such rare events is particularly crucial, as a single overlooked anomaly can lead to catastrophic consequences. In manufacturing, for instance, unplanned downtime due to rare failures costs industries over \$50 billion annually, with sectors like automotive losing more than \$2 million per hour—even with preventive maintenance systems in place.

However, the extreme rarity and …

A Review Of Plant–Microbe Interactions In The Rhizosphere And The Role Of Root Exudates In Microbiome Engineering, Anagha Wankhade, Emma Wilkinson, David W. Britt, Amita Kaundal Jun 2025

A Review Of Plant–Microbe Interactions In The Rhizosphere And The Role Of Root Exudates In Microbiome Engineering, Anagha Wankhade, Emma Wilkinson, David W. Britt, Amita Kaundal

Biological Engineering Student Research

Microbial interactions within the rhizosphere are fundamental to plant health, influencing nutrient availability, stress tolerance, and pathogen resistance. Beneficial microbes, such as plant growth-promoting microbes (PGPMs), including bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi, enhance plant resilience through mechanisms like nutrient solubilization, phytohormone production, and pathogen suppression via antimicrobial compounds and siderophores. Root exudates, composed of sugars, organic acids, and secondary metabolites, act as chemoattractants that shape the rhizosphere microbiome by recruiting beneficial microbes. Microbial metabolites can, in turn, modulate plant physiology and exudate profiles, thereby reinforcing mutualistic interactions. Stress conditions alter exudate composition, enabling plants to attract specific microbes that aid in …

A Conditional Point Cloud Diffusion Model For Deformable Liver Motion Tracking Via A Single Arbitrarily-Angled X-Ray Projection, Jiacheng Xie, Hua-Chieh Shao, Yunxiang Li, Shunyu Yan, Chenyang Shen, Jing Wang, You Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objective. Deformable liver motion tracking using a single x-ray projection enables real-time motion monitoring and treatment intervention. We introduce a conditional point cloud diffusion (PCD) model-based framework for accurate and robust liver motion tracking from arbitrarily angled single x-ray projections. Approach. We propose a conditional PCD model for liver motion tracking (PCD-Liver), which estimates volumetric liver motion by solving deformable vector fields (DVFs) of a prior liver surface point cloud, based on a single x-ray image. It is a patient-specific model of two main components: a rigid alignment model to estimate the liver’s overall shifts, and a conditional PCD …
