Credible Or Constructed? Citation Quality And Undergraduate Student Perceptions Of Generative Ai, William Bowman, Chelsea Carroll, Kaylee Erdos, Suzanne Odom, Wanda Perez
Evans Library Publications
This study aimed to evaluate students' perceptions of the reliability of generative AI tools in academic work, with a particular focus on the accuracy of citations produced by ChatGPT and the frequency of citation hallucinations. The study consisted of two instruments: a feedback survey and an assignment worksheet. The study was completed over the 2024- 2025 academic year and was administered to students enrolled in a for-credit information literacy course offered by the Florida Institute of Technology’s Evans Library. It gathered survey responses from 156 students and received assignment worksheet submissions from 188 students. These submissions yielded 512 AI-generated citations …
Advancing Statistical Methods For Multivariate And Network Meta-Analysis, Yifei Wang
Advancing Statistical Methods For Multivariate And Network Meta-Analysis, Yifei Wang
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
Multivariate meta-analysis (MMA) and network meta-analysis (NMA) are essential tools for synthesizing evidence across multiple correlated outcomes and treatments. However, these tools face practical challenges, including outcome reporting bias (ORB), unreported within-study correlations, and computational burden. ORB can distort effect estimates in MMA, while missing within-study correlations in multivariate NMA may lead to biased conclusions. To address these challenges, this dissertation introduces two novel statistical methods. For MMA, we propose SemiMMA, a semiparametric and scalable approach that treats ORB as a missing-not-at-random problem and combines inverse propensity weighting (IPW) with the generalized method of moments (GMM). For multivariate NMA, we …

Oxytocin's Role In Feelings Of Social Connection And Loneliness, Cecile Sunahara
Psychology Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the role of oxytocin (OT) in feelings of social connectedness. Healthy male and female participants (N=138) were exposed to a task designed to elicit feelings of social connectedness to close others (i.e., the Social Connection Task); participants’ salivary OT levels were measured in response to this task. Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), data were collected on participants’ feelings of social connectedness in daily life. Results from the current study showed that, among male participants, OT levels decreased in response to the Social Connection Task, while no change in OT was observed among female participants. OT reactivity to …

A Tailored Approach To Prep Screening For Awareness And Readiness, Keionda Crumblin Caldwell
A Tailored Approach To Prep Screening For Awareness And Readiness, Keionda Crumblin Caldwell
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a serious health concern in the United States (U.S). Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a vital intervention in the prevention of HIV, yet its uptake and adherence are suboptimal due to barriers in identifying individuals who are most at risk and would benefit most from this preventive measure.
Purpose: This evidence-based project aimed to evaluate whether implementing a PrEP readiness tool at a walk-in clinic would identify at-risk adults and adolescents and lead to an increase in referrals for PrEP initiation.
Method: A PrEP Questionnaire from the Department of Wisconsin Public Health was given …

Improving Depression Screening Of Correctional Institution Inmates, Thelma Chidimma Ozigbu
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem: Depression significantly impacted on the quality of life of incarcerated individuals within correctional facilities, where rates of the disorder far exceed those in the broader community, increasing self-harm and suicide risks.
Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to improve early identification of depressive symptoms and facilitate timely mental health referrals by implementing the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) as a screening tool upon admission.
Method: Using the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice (Iowa Model) as a guiding framework, this project involved training nursing staff to administer the PHQ-9 during initial health assessments. PHQ-9 is a nine-item questionnaire that assesses depression …

Improving Completion Of Diabetes Management Measures In Primary Care, Ashley Tyner Divers
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Problem Statement: Adults with type 2 diabetes are at a risk of multiple comorbidities that can be prevented with proper screenings performed as recommended by the American Diabetes Association.
Purpose: Determine if using a checklist on the patient router will improve completion of urine microalbumin, diabetic eye exam, and diabetic foot exam.
Methods: The MA/LPN asked the patient about the last eye exam performed and requested a record from the previous provider if performed within the last year. If the microalbumin was not current, the MA/LPN obtained a urine specimen and placed the order into EPIC. If a diabetic foot …

Enhancing Glycemic Control, Patient Knowledge, And Self-Care Through Structured Diabetes Education, Amanda Suzanne Clark
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
The rising prevalence of diabetes, particularly in South Carolina, revealed a significant gap in structured diabetes education programs, contributing to poor glycemic control and elevated A1C levels. In response, this project aimed to assess the integration of a comprehensive diabetes education program into standard care, potentially reducing A1C levels while improving patient knowledge and self-care behaviors in adults with diabetes over four months. The study used a pretest-posttest design to evaluate the effectiveness of this innovative intervention by comparing participants' outcomes before and after the program. Purpose: To determine if a comprehensive diabetes education program could reduce Hemoglobin A1C levels …
War Bonds And Household Saving In Wwii, Gillian Brunet, Eric Hilt, Matthew Jaremski
War Bonds And Household Saving In Wwii, Gillian Brunet, Eric Hilt, Matthew Jaremski
Economics: Faculty Publications
Household saving increased dramatically during World War II, reaching more than 19 percent of GDP. We study the effects of the war bond program implemented by the U.S. government on the level of household saving during the war. The bonds were heavily promoted in a series of drives, which encouraged thrift and associated subscriptions with patriotism, and also through a payroll deduction program. Yet as Friedman and Schwartz have noted, the main effect of the program may have been to change the form in which savings were held, rather than to increase saving. We use county-level data and an …

A Historic Context For House Moving: Why Moved Houses Are Eligible For The National Register Of Historic Places, Ian Tomashik
A Historic Context For House Moving: Why Moved Houses Are Eligible For The National Register Of Historic Places, Ian Tomashik
Historic Preservation Final Projects
Structural moving, the process of moving complete buildings to new sites, has shaped American landscapes for over two centuries. Thousands of wood-frame houses were moved with surprising frequency between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. Yet, moved buildings are “ordinarily” ineligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This project explores this exclusion two parts: an analytical essay that argues for their inclusion for nomination and a historic context survey that explains the prevalence of house moving. The essay first explains the National Register’s rationale for questioning the historic significance of moved buildings. It also examines why large-scale house …

Given the importance of protected areas for biodiversity, the growth of visitation to many areas has raised concerns about the effects of humans on wildlife. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to temporary closure of national parks in the United States, offering a pseudonatural experiment to tease apart the effects of permanent infrastructure and transient human presence on animals. We compiled GPS tracking data from 229 individuals of 10 mammal species in 14 parks and used third-order hierarchical resource selection functions to evaluate the influence of the human footprint on animal space use in 2019 and 2020. Averaged across all …

Background: Tandem lesions pose unique challenges in the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke. We aimed to compare the clinical and procedural outcomes of patients with tandem lesions and extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) complete occlusion versus those with moderate to severe stenosis.
Methods: This is a subanalysis of a multicenter cohort of patients with acute anterior circulation tandem lesions treated with intracranial mechanical thrombectomy and carotid artery stenting, between January 2015 and December 2020. The patients were categorized into 2 groups: extracranial ICA stenosis >70% to 99% and complete occlusion. Outcomes included successful and excellent recanalization, functional independence, symptomatic …

Buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) services offer consumers the option of short-term interest-free loans for retail purchases, but the rapid growth of such services has raised concerns about indebtedness and impacts on household financial security. This brief draws upon data from the nationally representative Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility survey to examine the use of BNPL offerings, the demographics of users, the use of alternative credit products, and differences in BNPL product use by employment status.

Coastal communities have complex bodies of knowledge around environmental change, resilience, and sustainability, which extractive forms of research are not well suited to understand. This paper outlines an arts-based action research pilot project to understand social-ecological resilience in the Western Indian Ocean. Our project used visual, artistic, and participatory approaches to foster co-learning and action research on: (1) the arts-based methods themselves and (2) resilience building in coastal communities and ecosystems. This paper focuses on the former elements. We present our inherently phenomenological approach as a research assemblage that can be used to bring together different communities and stakeholders, disciplines, …

Book Review: Provoked: How Washington Started The New Cold War With Russia And The Catastrophe In Ukraine, Josh Vanbuskirk
Parameters Bookshelf – Online Book Reviews
Author: Scott Horton
Reviewed by Lieutenant Colonel Josh VanBuskirk, commander, 6th Battalion, 95th Regiment, San Antonio, Texas
Billed by the reviewer as “must-read for military professionals who want to understand how the United States and Russia came to the precipice of war,” this book posits that the Washington bipartisan foreign policy consensus is to blame for the Russia-Ukraine War. Using US diplomats, bureaucrats, defense contractors, and politicians to make his point, Horton uses their work to argue for restraint when dealing with Russia.

Two Cheers For The Revolving Door, Stephen Calkins, Erica Straus
Two Cheers For The Revolving Door, Stephen Calkins, Erica Straus
Law Faculty Research Publications
Where do top US government antitrust lawyers come from – and go to? The so-called “revolving door” has long been a familiar part of the process. In recent years and especially during the Biden Administration, this custom has attracted increased attention and concern. What are the facts? This chapter sets out, in detailed tables, the background and subsequent employment of top government antitrust lawyers. Many enforcers came from major law firms (FTC commissioners much less frequently than others) and leave for major law firms. (Although studied in less detail, top state antitrust enforcers are starting to transition to major law …
